Dr. Bronson Strickland is the foremost authority in whitetail deer research right.  He is also our friend.  Over the years we have had a great relationship with Bronson centered around the mutual love for whitetail deer and a desire to properly manage habitat in a way that maximizes the overall herd health as well as antler production.    On this episode we will be  talking about summer foodplots and deer nutrition.  We also discuss Bronson's transition from MSU to private consulting.  He and Mitt Warldaw along with some of the best consultants in the country have formed Wildlife Investments.  In case you are just getting into hunting and  habitat management, here is a short bio on Dr. Strickland: Bronson Strickland holds BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in wildlife biology and management from the University of Georgia, Texas A&M-Kingsville, and Mississippi State University. He has been a co-director of the MSU Deer Lab since 2006 where he researched white-tailed deer biology and management and habitat management. Bronson's strengths are buck population management and the habitat management techniques used to promote the production and harvest of the best bucks. Bronson is a Certified Wildlife Biologist and was given the Al Brothers Deer Manager of the Year Award by the Quality Deer Management Association in 2019, the Lee Gladfelter Memorial Award by the Pope & Young Club in 2019, and the Joe Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Deer Association in 2024. https://wildlifeinvestments.com/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61553479625266

Welcome back to another episode of the Generations of Hunt podcast, where we dive into the bucking truth of hunting and outdoor adventures. I'm joined by my co-host, Matt, and we kick things off by discussing the recent weather changes and how it's the perfect time to start hiking for sheds. We share some personal anecdotes about the brutal cold and the excitement of finding sheds. We then transition into a discussion about deer holding their antlers longer due to a second rut and the impact of a mild winter. Matt shares his buddy's theory on this, and we debate the scientific evidence behind it. We also touch on the importance of starting early to find sheds before the state land gets crowded with people and their dogs.Next, we delve into the recent Team USA ice fishing tournament held in Michigan, where the US team disappointingly placed sixth. We joke about the challenges of releasing fish from the ice and the potential of making ice fishing an Olympic sport. The conversation takes an interesting turn as we discuss survival shows. We ponder whether we would participate in one and share our thoughts on the mental and physical challenges involved. We also talk about the strategies and hardships faced by contestants on shows like "Alone" and "Survivor."We then shift gears to discuss the National Deer Association's findings on the distance between shed antlers. According to their research, 56% of match sets are found within 10 yards of each other, which is a fascinating insight for shed hunters. Our discussion moves to the impact of weather on deer movement, referencing a new MSU Deer Lab study. We debate the effectiveness of hunting apps and the importance of actual deer sightings over predictive models. We also touch on the controversy surrounding new solar panel projects in Michigan, particularly in Gaylord. We discuss the role of organizations like BHA in pausing these projects and the potential impact on public lands. Finally, we dive into the topic of antler point restrictions (APRs) and their effectiveness in encouraging hunters to shoot more does. We reference another MSU study that suggests APRs do not significantly impact doe harvest rates.

This week we're talking about another blow to the whitetail deer hunting community, Chronic wasting disease has been found in Georgia making it the 36th state to have a positive case. Chronic wasting disease or CWD as it is commonly referred to as is a fatal neurological disease that affects the brain and nervous system of cervids like deer, elk and moose. Is this cause for alarm? Sort of, the best thing we can do as hunters and stewards of the land is continue to hunt and practice good herd management and work with our local and state agencies to help keep the prevalence of CWD low. The good news is this isn't the end the hunting, not by a long shot but it can change the landscape depending on how your state chooses to manage it. Now Georgia has taken a good look at what other states have done to keep prevalence low and they're implementing those best practices. We'll get into that and more in this episode with Lindsay Thomas Jr. of the National Deer Association. Most hunters might find it hard to believe that only 41% of licensed deer hunters harvest just one deer. Equally surprising is only 17% of hunters kill more than one deer. You can find these statistics and many more in the NDA 2024 Deer Report, which you can download for free. Not taking enough antlerless deer off the landscape is becoming an increasing problem in many areas of the country, so we invited Kip Adams, NDA's Chief Conservation Officer, to be a guest on the show to explain the issue. He also talks about the history of balanced herd management and NDA's role in improving deer herds since its inception as QDMA in 1988. Also in this episode, our hosts talk a little turkey hunting as another tag has been punched, this time by The Doctor, who shot his best gobbler ever on opening morning in Pennsylvania. It might be a long way until deer seasons get started, but there's still plenty of fun to be had in the great outdoors! Finally, Nick, Kip, and The Doctor talk about today's NDA Giving Day, and why they personally support the work of the National Deer Association. Hey everyone, Matt here from Generations of the Hunt. This week, we had a special episode as Joe couldn't join us due to the arrival of his new baby. To keep things interesting, we invited Dr. Mike from the In Seezyn Podcast, who brought along a fascinating guest, Lindsey Thomas from the National Deer Association (NDA). For those who might remember, the NDA was formerly known as the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) before merging with the National Deer Alliance in 2020. Lindsey, serving as the Chief Communications Officer for the NDA, shared his insights on a groundbreaking study on buck bedding behavior conducted by Mississippi State University. Contrary to popular belief, the study found that bucks have many more bedding areas than previously thought, with some bucks using up to 87 different bedding areas! This challenges the common hunting strategy of targeting specific bedding sites. We also touched on the implications of deer management practices, particularly in Michigan. Lindsey highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced buck-to-doe ratio for a more intense and observable rutting season. He also discussed the biological and hunting impacts of skewed ratios, such as less effective rattling and grunting, fewer rubs and scrapes, and the potential for late-born fawns, which can be especially detrimental in northern climates. Lastly, we delved into the topic of doe harvest rates and how they're crucial for managing deer populations. Lindsey pointed out that Michigan has seen a decline in doe harvests, which could lead to an imbalance in the deer population. He suggested that hunters should consider venison donation programs as a way to manage doe populations while helping those in need. It was an enlightening conversation that shed light on deer behavior and management, and it's clear that there's much more to consider when it comes to hunting strategies and conservation efforts. Thanks to Lindsey for sharing his expertise, and to Dr. Mike for joining us this week. We'll be back next time with more from the world of hunting and wildlife management. In this episode, I interviewed Lindsay Thomas Jr. the Chief Communications Officer of the National Deer Association. Lindsay and I discussed the positive outlook on whitetail management. Land managers, hunters, and land owners are actively switching from monoculture management to quality management promoting prescribed fire, early succesional plant communities, and soil regeneration for food plots. Not intended, but this episode became a positive response ot my previous episode, "The Ecological Conscience". Lindsay and I discussed the fear mindset I've noticed from whitetail deer oriented landowners ecspecailly noticeable in the Midwest. We discussed the back and forth finger pointing from hunters about different methods of take, which I feel has been settled in this episode. I enjoyed this conversation so much I became a member of the National Deer Association the next day. This is beyond whitetail management, this is beyond us as hunters, it's about managing the ground as God intended.
