Send us a textSometimes clarity doesn't come in a flash of inspiration, it arrives in the quiet, awkward realization that this… isn't it.Maybe it's your job. Or your routine. Or the way you've been moving through the world lately. It's not terrible, exactly, it's just not lighting any fires. And the tricky part? You're not even sure what would. In this episode of The Self-Help Antidote, we explore a refreshingly honest approach to self-direction: anti-goalsetting.Because when you don't know what you want, start with what you don't.The wrong fit, the dead weight, the “I guess this is fine” parts of your life, naming those is often the first step toward building something that actually feels like you.Sometimes the fastest way forward is simply knowing what you're no longer willing to drag with you.Visit us at:www.theselfhelpantidote.com

Hey Legend,Ever feel like you've read all the books, listened to all the podcasts, done all the “self-help” ...and yet you're still stuck in your head? Life hasn't actually changed? This is exactly why I invited Craig Anthony Harper on The Mind School Podcast this week.Craig is a behavioural scientist, high-performance coach, author, speaker, researcher, and genuinely one of the most insightful humans I've ever met. We went deep into:
Send us a textIn a world where connection is thinning, certainty is shrinking, and burnout feels like a badge of honor, what does it actually take to build a life rooted in resilience and wellbeing? In this episode, we dive into the psychological and neurological building blocks of self-care, not the bubble bath kind, but the kind that scaffolds you when life inevitably hits hard. From Dunbar's number to dopamine, decision fatigue to distress, we explore the science behind emotional regulation, agency, and the rituals that ground us. You'll learn why perceived control matters, why there's no "best way" to live well, and how the absence of mastery in modern life is quietly eroding our sense of identity. We discuss the power of scalable habits, the beauty of progressive overload in building mental resilience, and why the more you try to please people, the more miserable you, and likely they, often become.Whether you're seeking clarity, calm, or a comeback, this conversation offers real tools and fresh perspectives to help you move from reactivity to resilience, from "life is happening to me" to "I've got this."
Craig Harper and I got into the nitty-gritty of who we are versus who we want to be, and what happens in that messy middle space. We unpacked emotional reactions that don't match our best intentions, how old wounds still sneak into our current behaviors, and why real personal growth isn’t sexy- it’s reps and sets, falling down, and showing up again. Craig shared his thoughts on self-awareness, regulating emotions, chasing meaning over metrics, and the ongoing wrestle between ambition and contentment. We also talked ego, insecurity, values, and why some of our 'f*ck ups' might actually be the gateway to becoming who we’re meant to be. Send us a textIn this episode, we take a journey from the Prime Meridian to the emotional equator, where gratitude, fragility, and fierce compassion intersect. Drawing inspiration from Emile Durkheim, Jonathan Haidt, Marshall Rosenberg and Dr. Bernie Siegel, we explore how to stay grounded and emotionally regulated in high-stakes conversations without losing yourself, or the other person. We dive into the psychology behind emotional contagion and vicarious trauma, and how your presence, not your prescription, is often the most powerful gift you can offer. You'll learn why advice often fails, how to recognize when you're stealing someone's power instead of supporting them, and what "naming it to tame it" really looks like in a real conversation. We'll unpack the difference between sympathy and empathy, explore theory of mind, and show how non-violent communication and empathetic reflection can transform not only how we communicate, but how we believe in the people we're speaking to.Because in a world full of noise, the most radical thing you can do… is listen.Visit us at:www.theselfhelpantidote.com

Send us a textIn this episode, we dismantle the sacred cows of self-help and hustle culture with equal parts honesty and introspection. We start by questioning one of the most glorified slogans in fitness and life: “Go hard or go home.” Is it a motivational mantra… or just a socially acceptable way to ignore your body and trauma? From there, we dive into:· The self-inflicted damage we often call “grit” or “grind.”· Why brutal honesty isn't always brave, or kind.· The conversation we wish we could have had with our younger self (and maybe still need to).· How early experiences of chaos or neglect can shape a lifetime of risky behavior disguised as ambition.· And finally, we zoom out: What does our evolving relationship with AI reveal about the parts of ourselves we've outsourced, avoided, or are just now beginning to understand? This episode isn't just about performance or technology, it's about what we sacrifice, what we glorify, and what we might reclaim if we stopped confusing pain for progress. Send us a textEpisode Description:Are you living your life… or managing everyone else's reactions to it?In this episode, we dig into what happens when your self-worth gets tangled in the opinions of others. From the exhausting pursuit of universal approval, to the sneaky trap of meta-perception; how we think others see us. We explore how this mental noise hijacks our happiness, relationships, and performance. We'll unpack the difference between being affected by and defined by other people's views, how emotional intelligence requires the guts to hear hard truths, and why the ability to celebrate someone else's success says more about you than you think. Also in this episode:What friendships are actually worth keeping (and why that's not selfish). The one thing you should never do if you want to help someone change. The science-backed factor that explains 70% of workplace performance variation, and what it has to do with how you talk to people. And why curiosity is more than a mindset, it's the antidote to the toxic oversimplifications of “sound-byte thinking.”Let's explore what it means to guide rather than push, ask rather than assume, and build relationships that don't just perform, but transform.Visit us at:www.theselfhelpantidote.com

Send us a textIn a world obsessed with certainty, group identity, and the illusion of "the one right way," what happens when we choose to live in the question instead of clinging to the answer? In this episode, we challenge the seductive comfort of tribalism and explore how identifying too strongly with a single worldview can shrink our humanity. We dive into the dangerous allure of "my truth" vs. the truth, and why people who promise you the right way may be leading you the wrong way.Through the lens of self-compassion, responsibility, and the courage to deconstruct our own egos, we unpack how awareness without shame creates the space for real change. You'll hear about the power of environment, the beauty of curiosity, and the transformative question: What if I had six months to live, what would I do differently? This is not an episode about how to live like someone else. Matt Dye and Adam Keith discuss a recent study by Dr. Craig Harper on deer bedding blocks using hinge cuts and canopy manipulation. The study, conducted in Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee, involved 3, 10-acre hardwood blocks with 10-acre treatment areas and 5-acre control areas. Deer activity increased significantly, with daily detections rising from 1.4 to 7.5 after treatment. The study found a 435% increase in deer activity in treated areas and a 41% decrease in predator detections. They emphasize the importance of strategic placement and management of bedding thickets for effective deer hunting.
Habitat Podcast #321 - In today's episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Thomas Rovery. Thomas is from the University of Tennessee Knoxville and works closely with Dr. Craig Harper. We discuss: The practice of hinge cutting and its effectiveness in creating deer bedding Effective hinge cutting techniques The importance of creating clear paths and bedding areas for deer Strategically laying trees to form V-shaped structures Achieving at least 50% sunlight penetration in bedding blocks The importance of preserving dominant, mass-producing trees The importance of cutting a significant number of trees to see substantial results Predator behavior in hinge-cut treatment areas The potential drawbacks of introducing prescribed fire into hinge cut areas Effective hinge cutting techniques for hilly terrains And So Much More! Success is a word that we aspire to embody. Western culture often associates it with achievements, realised dreams, wealth or fame. But success is generally in the eye of the beholder. Back again (freshly returned from my Himalaya trip) with a philosophical banter about all things life with Craig Harper and as always, I loved it. After my perspective shifting experience on the mountains recently, we got stuck into the big stuff yet again, like finding meaning and purpose in this momentary ride we're on. Questioning if we really have to choose just one path, and why unlearning is just as important as learning. This week we all sit mesmerized by Dr. Craig Harper of UT as he explains his twenty-five-year study of fire and how it affects habitat. We've all known the importance of dormant season fires on the landscape but Craig explains the importance of fire at other times of the year and the exact benefits. His long study in conjunction with many other smart minds is now being explained and the results are eye opening. He's even preaching to burn smaller areas and he thoroughly explains why. Want to improve bedding? He has an answer. Want to create fawning cover? Want to create poult bugging areas? Nesting areas? High protein forbs and forages for a healthier deer herd? You have to listen to this one. We think it may be the most definitive explanation of fire we've heard and how using it over the calendar year can help you to accomplish your goals. You might need a notebook. Listen Learn and Enjoy. Show Notes:More on Dr. Craig Harper: https://naturalresources.tennessee.edu/craig-harper/The Guide's Choice. If your life is an 11-inch ruler, how many of those inches are left? Today Harps and I are talking about the time we have left between right now and the moment our now is over for good. When we take a moment to reflect on this it offers some perspective on how we might optimise the time we have left... Is our health span a priority and can we maximise our later years so we can feel and function as well as possible for as long as possible? We can't change the reality around chronological ageing, but we can influence our biological ageing with plenty of lifestyle choices and behaviours. In this episode, Craig Harper and I discuss the different forms of intelligence. While high IQ is often seen as the pinnacle of intelligence, it doesn't encompass social, emotional, or intrapersonal intelligence, among others. We also touch on the impact of various learning styles on perceived intelligence. Harps admits to being a naturally slow learner, but once he learns something, it stays with him for the long haul. On the other hand, I am typically a super-fast learner with a short attention span. This means I can quickly grasp new concepts but struggle to retain the detailed information long-term. Just ask my high school math teachers who begrudgingly handed me my A+ marks, despite my rambunctious classroom disruptions. Ever catch yourself 'out to impress', and behaving in ways you assume might gain approval over your usual behaviour? Ever notice how when we observe that trait in others, it's quite off-putting? Ever wonder why we can observe that in others, realise it's off-putting, and still catch ourselves doing it anyway? Human behaviour is a funny thing, and today Harps and I are chatting about exactly this. Deep down, we hope you're impressed! Good grief... how many of us have been holding out for that perfect moment to transform our lives? Be it our situation, circumstances, lifestyle, career, habits, health, or outcomes. Here we seem to be yearning for improvement & change, but all too often finding ourselves continually engaging in counterproductive behaviors that only set us back. We squander time, talent, energy, and opportunities, ultimately engaging in those all too familiar acts of self-sabotage and self-destruction. What is it that puts an end to this cycle? Perhaps now is the time. Results from the TN Delayed Season Start Study This week, Dr. Craig Harper and Dr. David Beuhler with the University of Tennessee join Cameron and Andy on the show to discuss their recommendations from their 7 year study regarding the effects of delaying the start of turkey seasons and the potential for increase in poult recruitment. The results of the study showed that moving the start of hunting season to later in the year did not greatly affect the initiation of nesting or the start of incubation for wild turkey hens. Drs Buehler and Harper share the details of the study and upcoming vote to possibly change the start date of the turkey hunting season. This is a very informative interview with information that can be applicable for any states that are considering moving the start date of their seasons to later in the year. Listen in! Today's chat with Harps was a perfect blend of humor and insight, potentially topping my list of favorite conversations with him. After we enjoyed some light-hearted banter about his lavender keep-cup and my tendency to relate to food much like a frantic Golden Retriever, the conversation took an intriguing turn. I'd gone full grown-up for this ep and proudly put in a solid three minutes of prep, armed with thought-provoking questions inspired by 'Tools of Titans' by Tim Ferriss - a must-read, I might add, for those who haven't yet! While I'm keeping Harps's answers under wraps, I can share that the questions led us down a path of resourceful tips, practical advice, and some meaningful life lessons. More than that, they paved the way for Harps to offer deeply honest reflections into the world of Harps as he's known it. In this episode, Harps and I dive into a thought-provoking chat about our individual significance within our own worlds, while also recognising that we are, essentially, one among 8 billion people on this planet. A perspective that can be particularly grounding when we find ourselves catastrophizing our problems or challenges. Alongside this, we dig into our personal experiences with somewhat addictive, obsessive and sometimes irrational behaviors, from exercise to chocolate and the usual suspects. Our chat is both a reality check and a reflection on the common threads binding us in our human experiences. Have you ever found yourself in a sea of brave souls, feeling alone as you dodge the things that scare you? You're sure not alone in this. Fear is all part of the contract for us humans. Facing our fears isn't just inevitable, it's often the gateway to epic rewards. I once believed that courage meant confronting the things that scared others, not myself. Eventually, I embraced actual courage by leaning into my own fears, rather than telling myself and others stories about them. This led to growth, resilience, and, surprisingly, a fair bit of joy! In this ep, Harps and I discuss the advantages of embracing fear instead of running from it. Don't be scared, have a listen. Self-help: you've got your cozy armchair theories (think books, podcasts, all those courses and workshops) and then there's the get-your-hands-dirty, sweat-it-out kind of self-help... the kind where you actually have to do stuff, sometimes scary stuff, not just nod along to a theory. In this episode, Harps and I are on a rant to sift through some of the sometimes nothing but fluffy, feel-good self-help marshmallows and dig out the real-deal, sometimes uncomfortable, nuggets of wisdom that can genuinely shake things up in your life. So, buckle up and get ready to throw those cliches under the microscope and see if they're actually doing us any good. This week we welcome Dr. Craig Harper of UT for a general deer discussion that begins with the severe drought most of us are experiencing. Will it affect acorns or other natural food sources? We sympathize with the many food plotters that, like us, are suffering. It doesn't take long for the conversation turn to harvesting does, including advice on what doe to shoot, when, bullet placement, understanding access/hunting pressure, the benefit of prescribed burns, early successional habitat and more. We always learn something from Craig and this exchange was no different. It's a good one. Listen, Learn and Enjoy!
