This week we're talking about another blow to the whitetail deer hunting community, Chronic wasting disease has been found in Georgia making it the 36th state to have a positive case. Chronic wasting disease or CWD as it is commonly referred to as is a fatal neurological disease that affects the brain and nervous system of cervids like deer, elk and moose. Is this cause for alarm? Sort of, the best thing we can do as hunters and stewards of the land is continue to hunt and practice good herd management and work with our local and state agencies to help keep the prevalence of CWD low. The good news is this isn't the end the hunting, not by a long shot but it can change the landscape depending on how your state chooses to manage it. Now Georgia has taken a good look at what other states have done to keep prevalence low and they're implementing those best practices. We'll get into that and more in this episode with Lindsay Thomas Jr. of the National Deer Association. Hey everyone, Matt here from Generations of the Hunt. This week, we had a special episode as Joe couldn't join us due to the arrival of his new baby. To keep things interesting, we invited Dr. Mike from the In Seezyn Podcast, who brought along a fascinating guest, Lindsey Thomas from the National Deer Association (NDA). For those who might remember, the NDA was formerly known as the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) before merging with the National Deer Alliance in 2020. Lindsey, serving as the Chief Communications Officer for the NDA, shared his insights on a groundbreaking study on buck bedding behavior conducted by Mississippi State University. Contrary to popular belief, the study found that bucks have many more bedding areas than previously thought, with some bucks using up to 87 different bedding areas! This challenges the common hunting strategy of targeting specific bedding sites. We also touched on the implications of deer management practices, particularly in Michigan. Lindsey highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced buck-to-doe ratio for a more intense and observable rutting season. He also discussed the biological and hunting impacts of skewed ratios, such as less effective rattling and grunting, fewer rubs and scrapes, and the potential for late-born fawns, which can be especially detrimental in northern climates. Lastly, we delved into the topic of doe harvest rates and how they're crucial for managing deer populations. Lindsey pointed out that Michigan has seen a decline in doe harvests, which could lead to an imbalance in the deer population. He suggested that hunters should consider venison donation programs as a way to manage doe populations while helping those in need. It was an enlightening conversation that shed light on deer behavior and management, and it's clear that there's much more to consider when it comes to hunting strategies and conservation efforts. Thanks to Lindsey for sharing his expertise, and to Dr. Mike for joining us this week. We'll be back next time with more from the world of hunting and wildlife management. In this episode, I interviewed Lindsay Thomas Jr. the Chief Communications Officer of the National Deer Association. Lindsay and I discussed the positive outlook on whitetail management. Land managers, hunters, and land owners are actively switching from monoculture management to quality management promoting prescribed fire, early succesional plant communities, and soil regeneration for food plots. Not intended, but this episode became a positive response ot my previous episode, "The Ecological Conscience". Lindsay and I discussed the fear mindset I've noticed from whitetail deer oriented landowners ecspecailly noticeable in the Midwest. We discussed the back and forth finger pointing from hunters about different methods of take, which I feel has been settled in this episode. I enjoyed this conversation so much I became a member of the National Deer Association the next day. This is beyond whitetail management, this is beyond us as hunters, it's about managing the ground as God intended.
Lindsay Thomas, the Communications Director of the National Deer Association, joins Robbie to talk about the science - and widespread myth and misinformation - around the culling of deer to improve antler class. 2024 is here! And what better way to start the new year than with Mr. Lindsay Thomas with the National Deer Association to give us some insight and facts on deer that we may not have known!
Across most of the whitetail's range, a November rut is the norm. This is because historical climate conditions dictate that fawns must be born during a specific window in order to survive. But across much of the south, this isn't so. In fact, depending on where you are, you might see whitetails breeding during any month of the year! What has created such strange rut timing in the southern US? In this episode of the Southern Way Hunting Podcast, host Josh Raley talks with Lindsay Thomas Jr. of the National Deer Association about why the rut time is so varied in the Deep South. The guys cover it all, from photoperiod, to stocking deer, to buck/doe ratios. They even get into a conversation about CWD and what hunters in the south should learn from states like Wisconsin that are on the brink of a major deer herd disaster. Enjoy! We have a really good one this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. Lindsay Thomas Jr. is the chief communications officer for the National Deer Association and joins John to talk about a recent article he wrote about "rutcations" and if they are actually effective. Lindsay, like many others including John, had never been able to take a true rutcation until his work situation changed in 2021. After two seasons of taking a full week off of work to do nothing but hunt during the rut, Lindsay made a few observations that any whitetail deer hunter should pay attention to. He observed that factors such as inconsistent winds and added human intrusion might hurt hunters more than most realize, even during the peak of breeding season. On top of the rutcation observations, Lindsay and John discuss a few other things that greatly affect hunters in the sooner state. One bright spot in the conversation comes when Lindsay talks about a few statistics that he recently learned about Oklahomas deer herd. These statistics are quite encouraging after all the recent talk about laws and regulations and other worrisome topics. Most will be encouraged to learn that the state of whitetail deer hunting in Oklahoma is far better than most realize. There is a little bad news in this episode however. Be sure to stick around till the end, when John asks Lindsay about a recent research study done on wild hogs. Lindsay discusses the study and how to everyone's surprise, they have found that wild hog populations are growing at an even faster rate than previously thought. The age at which sows can begin breeding is staggering, and so is the survival rate of piglets! Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant, outdoor content! Lindsay Thomas' wit and charm is the ‘secret ingredient' to her high end hand bags that has caught the attention of many major publications.
We often hear about the entrepreneur who has a crystal-clear vision from day 1 about exactly what she wants her online business to look like. She knows what she wants to offer. She knows her target audience. She understands her niche. That's one way that an entrepreneur can feel the pull to start a business. And it's a wonderful way! But there's another way that we maybe don't talk about quite as much — and that's the entrepreneur who's clear that she wants to build a business ... but the details at the beginning are pretty damn hazy. If this describes your situation, let me tell you: you are in great company! You might be surprised to discover just how many other business owners out there felt the draw to create their own online businesses long before they had nailed down all the details. But here's something you might not have considered as you're looking to start a business of your own: intentionally, consciously investing in your business, even if it technically hasn't been fully born yet. Today's guest, homebuyer coach and Incubator client Lindsay Thomas Milley, shares her unique journey with guest host Indira, and I think you're really going to appreciate her perspective. Lindsay decided to join the Incubator early, before she had total clarity on the path her online business should take. Why? Because having that clarity, support, and soul-aligned guidance was exactly what she needed to start a business that feels just right for her. Catch all the details inside this week's podcast episode! What you'll learn in this episode: Lindsay's journey as an entrepreneur (she's had the bug for a while now) The personal experience that made her decide to become a homebuyer coach Why she decided to join the Incubator early on in her business process — and why that turned out to be a smart move How her business has changed in the last 12 months since joining the Incubator Subscribe, Review + Connect Thanks so much for listening in this week! We have a treat for Coffee and Deer listeners in this episode! The highest scoring typical whitetail buck ever shot in the United States was taken last year in Decatur County, Indiana by Dustin Huff, and he joins Nick and NDA's Chief Communications Officer, Lindsay Thomas, Jr. The 211 4/8 inch net typical Hoosier State giant fell just 2 1/8 inches short of the world record whitetail shot by Milo Hanson in Saskatchewan, Canada in 1993. Here's the best part. Dustin had no idea the buck was using the property he had been hunting since he was a kid. The same property where he shot his first deer. After hearing the interview we think you'll agree that Dustin was the right guy to take this magnificent whitetail. On top of his success as a deer hunter, Dustin is also an accomplished country music singer and songwriter splitting his time between Nashville and his home state of Indiana. We talk about his music career as well as the exciting hunt that has changed his life. It's also an “Ask NDA Anything” episode and Nick and the Doctor answer two hunting related questions that we think you'll find helpful as you head into the seas. Continuing to grow in popularity, you'll also hear the B-Team Report. The Doctor describes how a little too much pride ended up hitting him in the wallet, and Nick tells of the hard lesson he learned about making sure you look at your bow sight before taking your first shots at the range. All that and more in one of our best episodes yet, and just in time for deer season! On the Missouri Woods & Water Podcast this week we have on Lindsay Thomas Jr. with the National Deer Association to talk about everything antlers. First we immediately get into a rabbit hole and talk about the timing of the rut in the southeast, which is where Lindsay is from. Once we get into talking about antlers, Lindsay gives the listener a rundown of the antler growth process and how it works, even talking about the relation of antler growth to cancer. Then we get into injuries and how those affect antler growth in a buck. An injury to just the antler can affect a buck differently than an injury to the pedicle or a skeletal injury. We also get into culling bucks and what Lindsay thinks about that practice and mineral sites. Lindsay gives us all kinds of great information on this topic and hopefully helps the listeners understand this awesome process we watch bucks go through every year. As a veterinarian in general veterinary practice, I would occasionally get asked for advice on sick fish. Our training at Vet School on aquatic medicine was pretty sparse and when a call came in for a goldfish floating upside down or an unsightly growth on the side of a guppy, I would try to look really busy or head for the door as if I had somewhere else important to be. If avoidance didn’t work, I would blow the dust off a couple of old texts on aquatic medicine I have to try and find an answer. With more people living in apartments meaning less space for conventional pets, keeping an aquarium is a lot more common these days. The price paid for a number of fish also means that the same standard of care that is given to cats and dogs is also expected for fish. There are now veterinarians who have taken their training to a new level. In this podcast I talk to Lindsay Thomas, a UK based vet with a special interest in fish medicine and find out a bit more about fish medicine including how do you give a pill to a fish.
Get ready for THE TRUE NORTH COLLECTIVE℠ PODCAST: SEASON 4! With co-hosts Rachel Bellotti (she/her) and Jenell Riesner (she/her), this is a gathering of un-sugar-coated conversations celebrating the untold stories of everyday people fearlessly finding and living their true north. In our own search to discover and live from our TRUE NORTH, we continue to meet many interesting, courageous people from all walks of life, doing all sorts of amazing things to live life in their own unique way. Stories from all over the world. Stories with heart. Stories with grit. Stories with plot twists. Stories going untold - until now. This season, we continue to celebrate these untold stories of everyday people who are fearlessly living their true north and inspiring each of us to do the same. Today, we are honored to speak with Lindsay Thomas (aka LT), a self-proclaimed “stranger conversationalist” with a shoe addiction, an advocate for all things primal needs - body image, diet culture, digital wellness, and sex positivity - and taking these basic primal needs + speaking to them in context to today’s societal construct. She’s a lululemon humxn who loves brainstorming + working with teams, her mantra is “just like the fucking spoon!”, and she is proud to be one year into recovery from her eating disorder. We talk about being adopted as an adult, knowing how much is enough stuff, the layers of choice, changing your mind, releasing shame, primal needs, having friends you can talk about sex with without it meaning anything, body acceptance, recognizing your recovery needs, recognizing vices, and choosing joy and tapping into the body’s intuition. LT is an incredibly calming WIP full of wisdom along her journey. Enjoy this episode as we unpack some deep and intimate topics.
Everyone knows about clover and soybeans, but are there other food plots you should consider? Lindsay Thomas of the National Deer Association joins Brian to talk about that and more. Lindsay Thomas has been with the National Deer Association since it started, following many years there when it was the QDMA. He has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to habitat management for deer, and he joins Brian to talk about some of the less common food items you can plant that will benefit deer, but also benefit other species as well. Lindsay brings a unique perspective on how to hunt those food plots, how to shape them, and how to think about those resources that deer use. Enjoy the latest episode of The SPYPOINT Podcast, and don't forget to share your feedback in the comments section as well.
In Training for Catastrophe: Fictions of National Security After 9/11 (University of Minnesota Press, 2021), author Lindsay Thomas studies the relationship between fiction and U.S. national security — specifically, the instrumentalization of fiction in preparedness materials, in which fictional events are phrased not only as real, but as producing eligible information and ‘intelligence.’ Approaching the subject from literary studies, Thomas finds the consequences of realism, genre, character, and plot in materials ranging from a Center for Disease Control comic about a zombie apocalypse to the political thrillers of former national security advisor Richard Clarke. I'm very fortunate this week to be joined by my first Republican guest, GOP pollster Glen Bolger of Public Opinion Strategies. Glen cut his teeth in polling in the Reagan / Bush era and helmed the polling operation for House Republicans before co-founding his own firm - a firm that now represents more than 40 members of Congress and 10+ US Senators. Glen tells some great stories of his early days in politics - matriculating at American University, interning on the Hill, cutting his teeth at polling with President Reagan's pollster and at the NRCC before being part of the founding of Public Opinion Strategies.
