Fatherhood has been one of the greatest gifts and blessings of my life. As I prepare to celebrate Father's Day this weekend and soon enter a brand-new season as an empty nester, I've been reflecting on the journey of raising three incredible kids over the last 23 years. The truth is, there's no playbook for being a parent. No manual. No perfect formula. You learn by diving in, showing up, making mistakes, and loving with your whole heart. In this heartfelt episode, I share the lessons, memories, and wisdom that have shaped me as a father—from those 4 a.m. newborn moments with Luke sleeping on my chest, to coaching my kids on the field, to preparing to watch all three of them spread their wings and chase their dreams. Whether you're a dad, mom, grandparent, coach, mentor, or simply someone who values family, this episode is a powerful reminder that the greatest impact we make often happens at home. In This Episode, You'll Learn: Why every season of parenting deserves to be appreciated and embraced. How becoming a parent deepens your purpose and changes your perspective forever. The power of creating meaningful experiences and memories with your family. Why the daily routines, values, and habits you instill matter more than any vacation or milestone. The bedtime affirmation that shaped the Durkin family culture for nearly two decades. How coaching your kids can strengthen your relationships and create unforgettable moments. Why volunteering, mentoring, and being involved in your children's activities matters so much. The life-changing lesson Todd learned from his father about the value of time. How "special time" with your kids can leave an imprint that lasts a lifetime. Why fathers and mothers play an irreplaceable role in shaping future generations. The emotions, excitement, and gratitude that come with entering the empty-nester chapter of life. A powerful reminder that time is our most precious commodity—and we can't afford to waste it. Fatherhood or parenting isn't about being perfect. It's about being present. It's about showing up day after day, creating experiences, building character, teaching values, and loving your kids through every season of life. As I look back on 23 years of being a Dad, what stands out most isn't the accomplishments, the awards, or the milestones—it's the moments. The conversations. The trips. The routines. The laughter. The lessons. The time. And as I prepare for this next chapter with all three of my children now pursuing their own dreams, I'm reminded that our role as parents isn't to keep our kids close forever—it's to help them grow wings and fly. For more than four decades, Tom Durkin's voice was synonymous with the biggest moments in horse racing. From the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes to the Breeders' Cup and Saratoga, his soaring calls helped transform great races into unforgettable theater. But as Durkin reveals in his new memoir, "A Life's Calling: The Voice Behind the World's Greatest Horse Races," the story behind the microphone is every bit as compelling as the action on the track. In this wide-ranging conversation, Durkin reflects on an extraordinary journey that began as a horse-racing-obsessed kid riding Chicago's "L" train to Arlington Park and eventually led him to become the most recognizable race caller of his generation. Along the way, he recounts the unlikely lie that launched his career, the grind of the minor-league fair circuit, and the national breakthrough that put him on racing's biggest stages. But this episode goes beyond just racing history. Durkin offers a fascinating look inside the craft of live sports broadcasting, discussing the college theater training that shaped his style, the famous "Mayor Daley" notebook where he collected thousands of descriptive phrases, and the relentless preparation that fueled his success. He also speaks candidly about the fear of failure, self-doubt, and anxiety that shadowed his career — even at its highest peaks — and how those challenges ultimately became part of what drove him. Replete with stories about iconic races, vanished racetracks, broadcasting innovation, and a lifetime spent pursuing excellence, this conversation is both a celebration of one of sports' great voices and a revealing examination of the work, passion, and perseverance required to become one. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable The "Good Seats" Store: http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY BUY THE BOOK: "A Life's Calling: The Voice Behind the World's Greatest Horse Races,": https://amzn.to/435AJus SPONSOR THANKS: Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats FIND AND FOLLOW: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/GoodSeatsStillAvailable Web: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/good-seats-still-available/

Graham Plattner's campaign is running into the kind of problem that feels very 2026, even if the source material is more than a decade old. His Reddit history, which might have once been shrugged off as niche internet noise, now looks like a liability with real teeth. The difference is not just that the posts exist, it's how easily they can be repackaged. With AI tools, those old comments are no longer stuck as screenshots on opposition research blogs. They can be turned into polished ads, delivered in his own voice, and made to feel immediate in a way that text alone never could. That shift raises the stakes for what would otherwise be a fairly standard controversy. Plattner isn't just dealing with awkward old posts, he's dealing with a narrative that can be replayed, amplified, and dramatized on demand. Campaigns used to prioritize video and audio because they felt authentic. Now, authenticity can be manufactured from written records, and that blurs the line in a way that's hard for candidates to counter. You can apologize for something you wrote, but it's a lot harder to respond when that same thing is suddenly circulating as if you just said it yesterday.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. What really puts him in a bind is how this intersects with the tattoo issue. His defense has been that he didn't fully understand the symbolism at the time, but the Reddit activity suggests he was at least familiar with the debate years earlier. That tension is exactly the kind of thing opponents look to exploit. It doesn't require voters to dig through details, it just asks a simple question that sticks: which version is true? Campaigns love that kind of contrast because it's easy to communicate and hard to shake once it lands. There's also a political instinct test happening here, and Republicans are not being subtle about how they feel. They want this matchup. When the other side is openly enthusiastic about running against you, it's usually not because they're worried. It's because they think they've already got the outline of an effective attack. Plattner's past gives them material, and the new tools available give them a way to present it that feels sharper and more persuasive than it might have even a few years ago.Stepping back, this feels like one of those races that ends up being about more than just the candidates involved. It's a preview of how campaigns are evolving in real time. The internet has always been a permanent record, but now it's also a fully searchable, fully reusable script. Anything a candidate has written can be pulled forward, recontextualized, and dropped into the current moment with very little friction. Plattner may still find a way through it, voters don't always react the way campaigns expect, but if nothing else, he's becoming an early test case for what happens when the entire online past becomes fair game in a much more vivid way.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:05:33 - Graham Platner's Reddit00:14:38 - Iran Ceasefire00:18:46 - Virginia Redistricting00:22:05 - Secret Service Upgrades00:24:37 - J.D. Welcome, welcome. There are occasions in football when a fixture transcends the merely sporting and assumes the character of a small moral drama, and I rather think this weekend's FA Cup semi-final between Chelsea and Leeds United qualifies handsomely. To discuss it with me today is Jack Durkin, a Leeds supporter and football presenter who, I suspect, will require very little encouragement to explain why his side are arriving at this contest not as plucky underdogs but as the altogether more serious and purposeful outfit. The rivalry between these two clubs has never wanted for intensity, but there is something particularly delicious about the present configuration of forces. For Chelsea, one hardly knows where to begin cataloguing the dysfunction. Liam Rosenior has been sacked, which is to say the club has continued its now almost compulsive habit of discarding managers the way a careless child discards toys on Christmas afternoon. The supporters, those long-suffering souls who once had Stamford Bridge as a fortress, find themselves increasingly disenfranchised from a project that appears to lack both direction and conviction. Six consecutive cup final defeats tells you rather a lot, and none of what it tells you is flattering. One loss might be misfortune; six begins to look like institutional rot.Leeds, by contrast, arrive with something Chelsea conspicuously lack: momentum and a sense of collective purpose. Having all but secured their Premier League survival, they are liberated from anxiety and playing with the freedom that comes from having nothing left to lose and everything to gain. A place in the FA Cup Final, the first since the 1972/73 season, beckons like a long-promised homecoming. Jack and I will be picking through all of this, so do stay with us.Jai This is a public episode. Hello & Welcome! Today's conversation is with Lydia Durkin George, all about pelvic health in women's rugbyIn our chat, we discussed Lydia's journey from being an elite kickboxer to becoming a physiotherapist, driven by a desire to support female athletes. She highlights her research on pelvic floor dysfunction in elite women's rugby players and her collaboration with advocates for female athletes. We discussed the prevalence of pelvic floor issues among elite women's rugby players, noting a high incidence of urinary and anorectal symptoms despite a lack of childbirth history. We also highlighted the need for better awareness and education about pelvic health, as only 30% of the athletes knew what a pelvic health physiotherapist was and only 10% engaged in pelvic health exercises. We're both passionate about the importance of normalising conversations about pelvic health and avoiding a one-size-fits-all approach to pelvic floor muscle training, as overactivity could exacerbate issues, and we both agreed that integrating pelvic health discussions into regular athletic training and education could help address these issues more effectively! We also talked about: • the specific pelvic health demands of rugby • better pelvic health screening • how lower limb injuries can affect pelvic health • the need for comprehensive pelvic health education and training And much more! You can find Lydia on Instagram at @form.at.physio (and of course I'm there too @michellelyons_muliebrity)Want to learn more about supporting female athletes at every age and stage? Thorpdale is synonymous with potato cartage and the Durkin name is right amongst it. With Michael Durkin kicking off the transport business on the family farm, he was known for some pretty flash gear for the era. His son Kelly now heads the trucking side with a full family affair making this business tick along nicely. A few of Bruce's favourite trucks reside in the fleet so it's a wonder he's not still down there!

This week Ivy Slater, host of Her Success Story, chats about the significance of International Women's Day and the theme "Give to Gain," sharing heartfelt stories about the women and mentors who have shaped her journey. In this episode, we discuss: How the 2026 International Women's Day theme "Give to Gain" shows up in real life through mentorship—why every woman Ivy mentors teaches her just as much in return. What Ivy learned from early role models like her dance teachers, working mothers ahead of her, and icons such as Ruth Bader Ginsburg and a beloved teacher, Mrs. Durkin, about breaking barriers and modeling what's possible. When Ivy was pregnant with her first child and told she couldn't "have the career you want and be a good mom," and how a conversation with her friend Bonnie, a pediatrician, reframed success as "how you show up," not the title you hold. Why 2026 is an invitation to show up as a dynamic, ambitious, grounded woman who becomes a role model simply by living fully—and how every act of mentoring, support, or encouragement is part of "give to gain." How male allies matter too, including Ivy's husband, who backed her decision to start a "crazy" coaching business in 2007 with a simple, powerful message: "You want to do it, figure it out, I'm with you." Ivy Slater is a professionally certified business coach, speaker, best-selling author and podcast host. After owning and operating a 7-figure printing business, having been in the industry for 20 years, she started Slater Success which focuses on developing great leaders and facilitating business growth and expansion. Jay G. Tate works by himself to discuss the most pressing news, which today centers around Alex Golesh's marathon press conference from earlier this week and what it taught us. Also: He sure seems authentic, doesn't he? He's been described as a DOG. (This is different than a WOLF.) If Kodi Burns likes him, I like him. Golesh was able to keep Durkin, which was very important. The staff is nearly fulled out at this point. Golesh says he wants to build though HS recruiting and supplement with portal. What should we think about that early signing period? Who are the real guys in this class? MBB review — the Arizona loss could be a very good thing. Quick WBB review — they're OK. Shoutouts. In this installment of Products Finishing's On the Line, we explore trends in electroless nickel (EN) plating, including hybrid applications in an interview with Brad Durkin, conference director for the Electroless Nickel Conference (ENC), which was recently held in Cleveland, Ohio. This is the third year for the event since its revival after a decade-long hiatus. ENC's growing success underscores the growing relevance of EN plating in today's advanced manufacturing landscape. In this interview, Durkin discusses trends and topics at the forefront of this year's ENC, as well as his take on the role of EN technology in manufacturing today.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones and Jay G. Tate reconvene to discuss the most pressing news, which today centers around the Tigers' hire of Alex Golesh as football head coach. Also: Offense first? Not really. What does he mean by following a process? Most of the guys already hired are on offense. What's going to happen with Durkin? What's the holdup? What's going to happen at quarterback? Alex joins him to discuss a bunch of moves: * Lane Kiffin heads to LSU, and Ole Miss replaces him swiftly with the internal succession option we talked about a few weeks ago: Pete Golding * The argument between Kiffin and Ole Miss at the end, Kiffin's efforts to own the narrative, and how much of this is his doing vs. the calendar's * Florida hires Jon Sumrall, who's technically a consolation prize but brings a lot more to the table than many Florida fans realize * Auburn, after weeks of pursuing Sumrall, winds up not with DJ Durkin but with Alex Golesh. But did Durkin play a role in how it shook out? * Arkansas gets Ryan Silverfield, angering Hogs fans but not Memphis fans* Michigan State fires Jonathan Smith and moves quickly to replace him with Pat Fitzgerald, in a sequence that looks like a set piece * Recapping some hires at Oklahoma State, Stanford, Colorado State, and Oregon State, while other jobs wait to be filled * Penn State's search is quieter than a whisper, but it's getting down to two options: Hire a coordinator, or take a big swing on a mystery man. If there's a mystery man, is he coaching a conference championship game? It's a great time to subscribe to Split Zone Duo Our coach carousel episodes, including this one, go behind the $10 monthly paywall for subscribers. If you're looking for a mix of reporting and longer-form discussions about the coach movements that shape the sport, we'd love to have you. Happy Thanksgiving week and I know this season upon which we enter is a sacred one. While we want to fill our buckets up with gratitude, peace, and joy, it's easy to be overrun with busy-ness, chaos, angst, stress, and overwhelm. As we head into Thanksgiving week and the holiday season, I wanted to slow things down…take a deep breath… and talk about two of the most powerful forces we have in our lives: Gratitude and Grace. If you want to feel more joy, more peace, more purpose and even more love, gratitude and grace are the gateway. Today, I want to share 7 things I'm especially grateful for this Thanksgiving and then I want to talk about how grace shows up—even in the imperfect, messy, beautiful parts of our lives. Let's dive in now: I'm particularly GRATEFUL for: Family. Pumped to be heading to South Carolina to celebrate Thanksgiving in the Carolina's. The amazing Retreat we just had and the 110 SOULS who said 'Yes' to being in the Room. Included are some of my top takeaways from Retreat… Health…on all levels physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The Trials, Tests, & Tribulations. Yep. Sounds strange but I'm grateful for the struggles and pain as it got me to where I'm at today. And I've learned to be grateful in the 'hard seasons.' My Life's Work—Coaching, Inspiring, & Leading people to be THEIR best. I'm grateful for the calling on my life to coach, motivate, teach, and transform lives. Friends & the IMPACT Community. I'm grateful for the people who inspire me, challenge me, stretch me, and support me. And people just like you listening to the podcast or reading the Shownotes or even one of my books. Thank you. We have one heckuva Community and I'm grateful for you. Opportunity & Possibility. I'm grateful for the open doors, the new projects, the ideas, the creativity, the energy that flows when you're aligned with your purpose. Faith…it has carried me through the highest mountains and the lowest valleys. Additionally, I share the difference between GRATITUDE and GRACE and define what GRACE really is. This Thanksgiving, I pray that you not only feel gratitude… but that you extend grace—to others, and to yourself. Here is your Thanksgiving Challenge This week, take 5 minutes each morning and write down: 3 things you're grateful for 1 person you want to extend grace toward CLOSING PRAYER God, thank You for the blessings in our lives—seen and unseen, big and small. Thank You for family, for health, for purpose, for love, and for the breath in our lungs. Help us to live with gratitude, to lead with grace, and to be a light in the world. Amen. FINAL WORD From the Durkin family to your family…Happy Thanksgiving. May your heart be full of gratitude, your spirit grounded in grace, and your life be overflowing with IMPACT. Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones and Jay G. Tate reconvene to discuss the most pressing news, which today centers around the Tigers' lopsided win against Mercer last weekend. Also: Deuce Knight is a dadgum RUNNER! Is there a quarterback conundrum? No, there isn't. Isn't it nice to see what happens when Derrick Nix is allowed do his job? The defense created three turnovers including a pick six. Alex McPherson regained his full kicking distance. Does this help Durkin's case for getting the full-time job? We still believe Jon Sumrall is in prime position to land the job. Why has it been so quiet lately? What are the keys to beating Ala? Simon Walker had a nice start to his college career. Auburn's defense continues to improve. There are big tests this week — Oregon and Michigan await. Shoutouts. Donald Trump's approval ratings have entered their roughest stretch of his second term, with three separate polls showing him hitting new lows after months of a seemingly bulletproof floor. The pattern itself is not unusual. Presidents in their second term often experience a dip once the early burst of post-inaugural goodwill fades. But Trump's decline is sharper than expected, sliding from the mid-forties into the high thirties. That puts him back in the territory he occupied for much of his first term, except this time he lacks the external crises that once helped explain his numbers. For better or for worse, he has defined the narrative of this second term so far, and voters are judging him on the results. It's no secret what the cause is for this drop: the economy. For months, Trump framed the United States as operating in a “golden age,” yet affordability remains a pain point. Tariffs have become an easy messaging target for Democrats, who argue that the disruptions fall hardest on consumers. Trump's core Republican base hasn't budged and Democrats remain consistently opposed, with the movement almost entirely coming from independents, many of whom appear to be remembering the volatility of Trump-era governance.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Whether this downturn is temporary or the beginning of a deeper slide will become clearer after the holidays. For now, the numbers are unambiguously weak. If Trump wants to regain altitude, he will need more than assurances about economic strength. He will need voters outside his base to believe it. In this episode, we break down Auburn interim head coach D.J. Durkin's decision to start Jackson Arnold and Deuce Knight at quarterback against Mercer — a move clearly designed to preserve Ashton Daniels' redshirt. With Daniels having played in three games already this season, Durkin is walking a tightrope between short-term wins and long-term roster planning. Learn more about your ad choices. Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones and Jay G. Tate reconvene to discuss the most pressing news, which today centers around the football team's overtime loss at Vanderbilt. Also: Auburn's offense sure was good the other day. Was Hugh Freeze really that big of a drain on the offensive operation? Ashton Daniels put together one of the greatest single games from an Auburn quarterback. It's like magic getting the ball to Auburn's best players, huh? Preston Howard needs to step it up. Xavier Chaplin needs to step it up. What happened to the defense? Did Durkin's head-coach work affect the defense? Does this performance enhance Durkin's candidacy? Who else is seriously in the mix for this job? Men's basketball won two games last week. Isn't it weird how shooting has been a problem for the team right now? Keyshawn Hall is a bad man. Shoutouts. The Nation's First Manhunt, retired Secret Service agent Todd Hiles and retired FBI agent Stewart Fillmore take you back to the beginning of modern federal law enforcement—to a murder that would ignite America's very first nationwide manhunt. When FBI Special Agent Edwin C. Shanahan was shot and killed in 1925 by Martin J. Durkin, a ruthless car thief who had already wounded four police officers to escape capture, it sent shockwaves through Chicago and the fledgling Bureau of Investigation. Shanahan's death marked the first time an FBI agent was killed in the line of duty—and it demanded justice on a national scale.Hiles and Fillmore unravel how Durkin's desperate flight triggered an unprecedented, coast-to-coast pursuit that would reshape how America hunted its most dangerous fugitives. What began as one agent's tragic death became a turning point—uniting law enforcement agencies, forging new investigative methods, and laying the groundwork for the modern FBI.From the streets of Chicago to the train stations in Texas, Back in Crime uncovers the legacy of Edwin C. Shanahan, the determination of the men who chased his killer, and the manhunt that defined a new era of justice in America.Follow Texas Crime Travelers:TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@texascrimetra...Instagram: https://instagram.com/texascrimetrave...Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/texascrimetr...Substack: https://substack.com/@texascrimetravelershttps://texascrimetravelers.com/Have a specific case in mind that you'd like us to explore or just want to get in touch? I just got back from prison. Yep—you read that right. Melanie and I, alongside legendary author & philanthropist Bob Goff and the Love Does team, spent a full day inside San Quentin State Prison in northern CA. And let me tell you, it was one of the most powerful, life-changing experiences you could only imagine. Today's episode is raw, real, and fresh—we recorded it just days after getting back. You'll hear from both me and Melanie as we share what we saw, what we felt, and the incredible lessons we learned from the men inside those walls, many of them who have life-sentences. Before diving in, I've got three coaching questions for you that deal with the 7-lessons we will share today (Please keep them in mind WHILE you are listening to this episode): What are your greatest ambitions and dreams? What is your hope and where are you placing your hope these days? What are your fears…and what's your relationship with fear? Here are some of the lessons and take-aways we brought home from San Quentin and will discuss in Episode 444: The Power of a Greeting – One hug. One moment. One welcome can change everything. Wait until you hear this one! The Yard is Where It's At – Raw humanity on display: boxing, baseball, running, workouts, conversations, and even the “pigeon guy.” Reform & Rehabilitation Work – Hundreds of programs, degrees, certifications, and initiatives giving men hope and purpose inside the walls. Communication Matters – No phones. No distractions. Just presence, depth, and real conversation. The Power of a Small Group – Stories of Max, Jesse, and others reminded us that dreams of family, freedom, and redemption are universal. The Power of One Conversation – Sometimes a single word of encouragement, one moment of presence, can alter a life's trajectory. The Power of a Mission – What Bob Goff and “Love Does” is doing to build schools across the globe inspired Melanie and I to ask: “How can the Durkin IMPACT Foundation do even more? Listen in… At the heart of it all, this trip reminded me of something Pastor Miles McPherson told me years ago: “All people—prisoners, homeless, troubled, broken—they are ALL God's people, made in His image.” So true. Melanie and I left San Quentin in deep gratitude and with a burning question: How can we do more? How can we serve in ways that create even greater IMPACT? So, I'll leave you with one more question today: Where and how can YOU show up, serve, and give back to make the biggest impact also? Thanks for listening, my friends. Please share this one—it's a message we all need to hear.
