On deck for this week's episode, the first Squeeze album of all new material after a 17 year period, Cradle to the Grave, and what an album it is! So much energy! Great tunes! The band sounds vibrant, refreshed, and like they're enjoying what they're doing. Sitting in the co-host chair for this discussion is writer and What the Fork? co-host, Jason Keil. No, you're not reading that wrong, Jason is back--it only seemed fair to have him back to talk about a better album than Domino. Be sure to check out Jason's work in PHOENIX Magazine, The New Times, and on his website: Twitter and Instagram: @jasonekeil http://www.jasonkeil.com/ As always, I want to stress the importance of supporting the artists that are featured on this series, whether that’s through buying their music and merch, attending one of their concerts, or even simply following them on social media. Squeeze is indeed very active, recording and touring both as a band, and Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford with their respective solo endeavors--see them in whatever capacity you're able. Additionally, keep up to date on all their latest doings at http://www.squeezeofficial.com/ and through their social media (@squeezeogram on, appropriately, Instagram and @squeezeofficial on Twitter). On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's 1998 album, Domino. Generally regarded as a low point for the band, it's a personal favorite due to it being the release the band was touring behind when I first saw them in 1999. It was also their last album of new material for 17 years. Sitting in the co-host chair for this discussion is writer and What the Fork? co-host, Jason Keil. On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's 1995 album, Ridiculous. Released at the height of britpop, Squeeze's label saddled them with the slogan "The godfathers of britpop" and pushed Heaven Knows--perhaps one of their worst singles--into the upper echelons of the charts. The album is the band's most stylistically diverse, and as the conversation with guest host Tyler Button (founder and writer behind Tapestry Comics) points out, the experimentalism of the album is not always entirely successful. There are some definite highlights here, though, including Daphne, Electric Trains, Fingertips, and more. Check out the cool work Tyler's doing over at Tapestry! https://www.tapestrycomics.com/ As always, I want to stress the importance of supporting the artists that are featured on this series, whether that’s through buying their music and merch, attending one of their concerts, or even simply following them on social media. On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's 1993 album, Some Fantastic Place. Back on A&M records, with their first album since Chris Difford bugged out and got sober, the band sounds vibrant, reinvigorated--hopeful even. SFP features some of their best songs, including Third Rail, the title track, It's Over, Jolly Comes Home, and the album closer, Pinocchio. The album also sees the increasingly prevalent lineup changes with the departure of Gilson Lavis from the drum chair, to be replaced by The Attractions' Pete Thomas, and the return of Paul Carrack on keys. Doug Bale is back in the co-host seat and enjoying Carrack's presence on the album. On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's 1991 album, Play--their only album for Reprise Records. Featuring the highlights Letting Go, The Day I Get Home, The Truth, and Walk a Straight Line, the album holds the distinction of being the last one prior to Chris Difford pursuing a life of sobriety. It strained the Difford and Tilbrook relationship even further, and continued to see the band's commercial success decline in the face of their more mature and arguably more artistically rewarding work. I primarily say arguably, because this week's co-host, artist and musician Doug Bale, argues otherwise. It's a fun conversation between two music lovers holding a difference of opinion. On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's 1989 album, Frank. Arguably a stronger album than it's popular predecessor, the album marked a sharp decline in the band's commercial success and began a trend where Squeeze released some of its best albums out into an increasingly indifferent marketplace. Returning as guest co-host for this episode is the fantastic Marc Oxborrow of The Haymarket Squares and The Blood Feud Family Singers--both of which will be sharing a bill with the Hot House Orchids and the Rae Lydia Duo at Last Exit Live on Friday, June 21st, and The Squares are headed out on tour this July, so be sure to check out their tour dates for more info. http://www.haymarketsquares.com/tour/ As always, I want to stress the importance of supporting the artists that are featured on this series, whether that’s through buying their music and merch, attending one of their concerts, or even simply following them on social media. On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's 1987 commercial peak, Babylon and On. Featuring the hits "Hourglass" and, unfortunately, "853-5937," Babylon and On marks the beginning of a turning point for Squeeze with career highlights such as "Tough Love" and "Footprints" showing that the Difford and Tilbrook could still write a hell of a song. On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's difficult (for most people) 1985 reunion album, Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti. As the discussion with guest host Dan Hull reveals, however, there is a LOT to love about this album despite any flaws its very of-the-time production and the drug-induced mental states of Difford and Tilbrook may have saddled it with. Dan is a gifted storyteller who has a long history in the Phoenix storytelling community. He currently produces and co-hosts The Storyline SLAM, which takes place every month at The Newton, and you've got to check out Bad Buddhist, a film of his one man show of the same name. https://www.thestoryline.org/ https://badbuddhistmovie.com/ As always, I want to stress the importance of supporting the artists that are featured on this series, whether that’s through buying their music and merch, attending one of their concerts, or even simply following them on social media. On this edition of Album Infinitum, Cool for Cats. The album that spawned the classic singles "Goodbye Girl," "Up the Junction," "Cool for Cats," and "Slap and Tickle," Cool for Cats is largely considered by Difford and Tilbrook to be the first proper Squeeze album, it cemented the band's placement as one of the best pop bands of all time, and put them at the crest of the crashing New Wave. In the co-host seat for this episode is the wonderful Mr. Jason Woodbury. Jason is a member of the Zia Records home office team, a music writer, a musician, part of Aquarium Drunkard (be sure to check out the AD podcast Transmissions!), and just an all around great guy--especially to talk music with. And so it begins! Squeeze is absolutely one of the best bands of all time, whether you know it or not, and we kick things off with their stutter step of a start, the John Cale-produced eponymous debut (or U.K. Squeeze if you bought the album stateside in 1978). The album features one of the greatest singles of all time, "Take Me, I'm Yours," and gives an uneven first impression from there, though the Difford and Tilbrook songwriting partnership and trademark vocal dynamic flourish throughout. Joining this discussion is guest co-host Paul Mosier (@mosier_paul on Twitter), whose novels for middle grade readers--Train I Ride, Echos Sister, and the forthcoming Summer and July (2020)--are available from HarperCollins publishing at any fine book selling establishment. Be sure to check out both of Marc's bands on Bandcamp or at one of their upcoming shows, and follow them on social media: @marcxist @haymarketsquare, http://www.haymarketsquares.com/ https://bloodfeudfamilysingers.com/ As always, I want to stress the importance of supporting the artists that are featured on this series, whether that’s through buying their music and merch, attending one of their concerts, or even simply following them on social media. Fountains of Wayne is not currently active with regards to playing shows or recording music, but they do have a website where you can get FoW merch, and they're still tweeting at @fountainsofwayn. Chris Collingwood is also active on Twitter at @LookPark, which is his band post-FoW. Traffic and Weather may not be the best Fountains of Wayne outing, but as Jared Duran and Marc Oxborrow discuss, with songs like Fire in the Canyon, I-95, and Seatback and Traytables, there is plenty to love about this album. On tap this week, it's Fountains of Wayne's commercial breakthrough, Welcome Interstate Managers. It spawned the radio and video hit "Stacy's Mom," but there are so many gems on this one, and we get into all of it. The second artist up for Album Infinitum is a power pop gem. Great, catchy tunes, wry lyrics that teem with irony, but always manage to have such heart and earnestness to them, which put the songs over in a genuine and infectious fashion that avoids novelty or pastiche, and their self-titled debut brings all of that right up front and center with songs such as Radiation Vibe, Leave the Biker, Survival Car, and more. The co-host for this episode is Jenna Duncan (on Twitter and Instagram at @JennaDuncan2001). This week, we wrap up (for now) our Aimee Mann discussion with her most recent album, Mental Illness. Sitting in on this week's discussion is writer and co-host of the Transmissions podcast from Aquarium Drunkard, Jason Woodbury. Not only does the conversation focus on Mann's album, but the national discourse (or lack thereof) surrounding mental illness in society as a whole and as it pertains to Jason and host Jared Duran in particular. Deep stuff, great conversation. Check out the Transmissions podcast wherever you get podcasts, and follow Jason @jasonpwoodbury on Twitter. We near the end of journey through the albums of Aimee Mann with her 2012 offering, Charmer. Sitting in the guest chair for this discussion is the wonderfully gifted songwriter, musician, and all-around great human being, Marc Oxborrow. Continuing on down the discography of Aimee Mann, we arrive at her wonderful 2008 album, @#%&*! Smilers, which is perhaps the most musically buoyant in her catalog. This week's guest is the ridiculously gifted singer-songwriter Betsy Ganz. Betsy leads the fantastic band The SunPunchers, and she can be seen regularly as part of the lineup for Toast Tuesdays at The Lost Leaf. Find Betsy on Facebook under The SunPunchers and Betsy Ganz Music, on Twitter at @TheSunPunchers, and check out http://thesunpunchers.com/. The Aimee Mann discussion continues on Album Infinitum with her 2002 album, Lost In Space. This is the deepest lyrical exploration so far for this show, and as you'll hear, we discuss the conceptual nature of this album. All of the individual songs feel part of a whole story, and story is seriously dark. Also, we talk about Buffy a little bit, because Aimee played a couple of these songs on an episode. Returning for this discussion is writer, professor, unabashed Wheel of Fortune enthusiast, and Hoot N Review co-host, Jenna Duncan. She is a regular contributor to publications such as Java and Echo, and you can follow her at jennaduncan2001 on Twitter and Instagram. The first artist up for Album Infinitum is one of my very favorites, Aimee Mann. Her debut solo album, Whatever, was released in 1993, a full five years after the last ‘Til Tuesday album, Everything Is Different Now, and there’s a great article that Stereogum put up for 25th anniversary of Whatever where Doug Bleggi talks to Aimee Mann about the whole story behind the reason for that gap, which comes down to, surprise, surprise, record label politics. Although the album is generally well-regarded--Elvis Costello named it one of his 500 essential albums, it’s in the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die, Nick Hornby included the song “I’ve Had It” in his aptly titled Songbook, or 31 Songs for anyone in the UK--this is not my favorite Aimee Mann album. I think this is largely due to how dated the production sounds, which is a shame, because it’s predominantly produced by the great Jon Brion, whose work I love. Whatever does contain two of my favorite Aimee Mann songs, though, “Stupid Thing” and “4th of July.” Joining me for this discussion is my Hoot n Review co-host, writer, professor, and unabashed Wheel of Fortune enthusiast, Jenna Duncan (@jennaduncan2001). One of the main points of this podcast is to express not only a love of music, but a love for collecting music as well, and as such, I highly encourage listeners to go out and get copies of the albums discussed on this show. It shouldn’t be terribly hard to go out to your local record store and find a copy of Whatever, so go do it. I also encourage you to support the artists behind the music, so check out aimeemann.com and follow @aimeemann on Twitter. Welcome to Album Infinitum, the music discussion podcast that explores an artist’s career one album at a time. Crystal Kazmierski's yearbooks started winning major scholastic journalism awards before she even knew they were a big deal. She advised 24 yearbooks at Arrowhead Christian Academy in Redland, California. Twenty-two of them won Pacemakers and one of them was a Pacemaker finalist. The one year they didn't place was because they didn't enter. In this episode, host Jim Jordan chats with his longtime friend about her amazing career. Starting with how she came to yearbook (with her college degree in theater), their conversation follows her career all the way to retirement in 2017. During their chat, Crystal and Jim touch on how she built a yearbook program that won awards and influenced the yearbook world. Questions? Comments? Suggestions for future episodes? After many months of hard work, ZendDb Deep Dive is ready! (https://www.pluralsight.com/courses/zend-db-deep-dive) SQL’s long been a part of modern web applications, especially those created using PHP. But SQL’s not a skill that sits at the top of most developers key skills list. Nor is it one that we’re often itching to learn. So I created this course to help bridge the gap. If you know the basics of SQL, but want to do it in an object-oriented, reusable, flexible, and maintainable way, then this is the course for you! In this episode, I’m sharing a bit about it, why the course was created, and what you can get out of it. Part of the Aura project, which is an independent collection of libraries, and originally designed for PHP 5.4 by Paul M Jones (@pmjones (https://twitter.com/@pmjones)). Aura is, in the words of the repository: Powerful and flexible web routing for PSR-7 requests. It's an excellent package, sporting a range of powerful features, including: route groups, route caching, custom matching rules, and the ability to generate paths from routes. For more information, check out the following links: https://github.com/auraphp/Aura.Router http://zend-expressive.readthedocs.org/en/0.2.1/router/aura http://www.sitepoint.com/web-routing-in-php-with-aura-router/ Questions/Comments/Suggestions @zfmastery (https://twitter.com/@zfmastery)
In this episode, I’m giving a quick overview of Zend Expressive’s default routing package - FastRoute. FastRoute, as the documentation says: Provides a fast implementation of a regular expression based router Written by Nikita Popov, or nikic (https://twitter.com/@nikic) on Twitter and GitHub, it’s both a simple and uncomplicated, yet extremely fast and highly performant routing package. It's one worthy of being the default routing package for the Zend Expressive standalone installer. Today, I'm talking about one of the two core concepts behind Zend Expressive (http://www.masterzendframework.com/zend-expressive-introduction/) - Middleware. But what is Middleware? Here's a quick definition: Middleware, in the context of software applications, is a layer that sits somewhere in the middle, between a request and response. Applications built around a middleware foundation are able to insert functionality in what can be thought of as a series of blocks, blocks which don’t necessarily need to know about one another, nor have any relevance to those which come before, nor those which come after. The blocks are stacked in a particular order and can either pass the current request on to the next one in the chain, or change the request, based on what happens during the processing of that block, changing the dispatched request. To find out more information on it, check out these key links: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middleware https://mwop.net/blog/2015-01-08-on-http-middleware-and-psr-7.html http://www.masterzendframework.com/zend-expressive-introduction/ Questions/Comments/Suggestions @zfmastery (https://twitter.com/@zfmastery)
