On today's episode, Mark sits down with Dr. Thomas Fow, a Scottsdale, Arizona native with a unique and inspiring journey to dentistry. Dr. Fow, who initially focused on basketball, was recruited to play at the United States Air Force Academy where he earned his BS in Biology and served as an orbital engineer for the Air Force. Despite his impressive career start, Dr. Fow was inspired by his family's legacy in dentistry and pursued a Doctoral Dental Surgery degree from the University of Colorado School of Dentistry. After a few years in private practice, he returned for advanced training in surgical dentistry. Dr. Fow shares his incredible journey, from the challenges of balancing Division 1 basketball and rigorous academics at the Air Force Academy to his transition from engineering to dentistry. He recounts the demanding nature of military training and how it shaped his resilience and dedication. Dr. Fow's story includes overcoming a low GPA from the academy, retaking essential courses, and ultimately earning his place in dental school despite significant setbacks. Now a traveling implant dentist in the Denver Metro area and a surgical mentor at the Colorado Surgical Institute, Dr. Fow discusses his passion for surgery, particularly full-arch surgeries, and the profound impact it has on patients' lives. He offers valuable advice for dental students and young dentists on finding their passion, the importance of gaining general dentistry experience, and the path to surgical proficiency. Dr. Fow also reflects on his faith and the pivotal moments that led him to pivot his career path, emphasizing the importance of embracing challenges and betting on oneself. His story is a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and the pursuit of excellence in both personal and professional realms. Listeners are encouraged to follow Dr. Fow on Instagram at @tfowdds or email him at thomas.fowdds@gmail.com for insights into his day-to-day practice and to reach out with any questions. Join Dr. Mark Costas and Dr. Thomas Fow for an inspiring and insightful conversation that highlights the importance of resilience, continuous learning, and following one's passion in dentistry. In 2003, amidst a bunch of bleak alternative rock bangers like “Numb” by Linkin Park and “Bring Me To Life” by Evanescence, a rock song stood out on the charts for its fantastic hooks and juvenile sense of humor. “Stacy's Mom” turned the New Jersey band Fountains of Wayne into MTV mainstays and Grammy nominees. But while they continued to release music, tour the country, and maintain a devoted fanbase, they never reached the same level of fame again. Most people never looked further than the raunchy music video, but Fountains of Wayne released six albums across two decades, each filled with tracks of quirky, clever, and undeniably catchy power pop. And the writer of that song, FOW bassist Adam Schlesinger, had a rich and fascinating career behind the scenes in film, TV, and more. In this episode of Switched on Pop, we explore the history of “Stacy's Mom”, a perfectly crafted pop song that stands as a testament to the brilliance of a musician whose career was cut tragically short. Should you focus on profits or people? The truth is that these two are not mutually exclusive. To get to profits, you need to start by focusing on your people. Think about where your profits come from. Profits come from your employees who are building relationships with customers and selling more products. So remember that people and profits are not two opposing forces that are meant to battle each other. They are almost one and the same to get to higher growth. Invest in your people and their experience because they are the ones who will go above and beyond to create opportunities. --------------------- This episode is sponsored by Namely, the all in-one HR solution that makes life easier for your employees, your boss and you! Leadership is oftentimes equated with transformation. But transformation isn't something that happens overnight. Transformation is something that takes a long time. It's the small things that you do over time that will lead to great impact. Here are small things that you can do to be a better leader: 1. Recognize your team members - it can be as simple as saying thank you. 2. Put together diverse teams. 3. Practice self care - you need to take care of yourself so that you can in turn, take care of others. 4. Practice empathy - putting yourself in somebody else's shoes and perspectives and then responding based on that. 5. Take time to be curious. 6. Be sure you are listening instead of just hearing your people. --------------------- This episode is sponsored by Namely, the all in-one HR solution that makes life easier for your employees, your boss and you!
