This week, we revisit a franchise that has seen not only a fresh pair of installments, but a refreshed resonance to cultural themes. Filmed directly after 28 Years Later, THE BONE TEMPLE picks up where the previous film left off with Spike (Alfie Williams) now having been integrated into the cultish and terrifying group led by "Sir" Jimmy Crystal (in a haunting performance by Jack O'Connell). They make their way across the landscape, slaughtering the infected and offering a hideous "charity" to any passersby they encounter. But when the group intersects with the benevolent Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), a confrontation is staged that will position belief, purpose, and the very essence of humanity at odds with malice, deceit, and cruelty. The film points a grim eye towards our darkest nature and unearths a disarming capacity for redemption. Nathan is joined again by Kate Micham (who guested with him discussing 28 Years Later) for an exploration of the film's rich themes and the ways it informs the too-little discussed discipline of discernment. Also featuring a Patron-only chat about the Apple TV hit series WIDOW'S BAY, this is a brisk and thoughtful conversation that we really hope you enjoy.Patron Only Segment: WIDOW'S BAY3:25 - 28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLESee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Losers Club bands together to fight a shape-shifting entity that disguises itself primarily as a clown and feeds on children in the summer of 1989 in Derry, Maine. It, based off the classic Stephen King novel, depicts half of the story, focusing on the kids as they fight Pennywise who is feasting on children in Derry, Maine. This film fits perfectly into the Kids Aren't Alright month as the kids in Derry are going missing and the Losers Club discovers Pennywise is hungry for their fear. The kids in this rendition of the story portray the characters well and we believe the portion of the story where the kids fight Pennywise is the better half of the story vs when the adults come back to Derry in the future. Bill Skarsgard's performance and re-brand of the infamous Pennywise was amazing and as good as the iconic Tim Curry performance from the 1990 TV mini series. Time moves more quickly now than it ever has. It was not that long ago that we were talking about a new show executive produced by the Duffer brothers. About a month later, it is one and done. As someone once reminded us, we are just two guys who watch movies. Production budgets and domestic grosses are only a passing interest to us. Still, there are some things that catch our attention. Were we right to say that Michael would get to $1 billion? And what does the future hold for Obsession? There was a major change to our humble little podcast this year. We decided it would be in our best interests to be a little more focused. To that end, we went to just covering one movie each show. Despite this, we still managed to cover twenty-three movies over seventeen episodes. And twenty of them were released in 2026. So, what do we have to talk about? And will we get as worked up as we did last week? The horrors of high school, zombies, musicals, buff nuns, and grindhouse adjacent fun. It may not all have been good, but everything left some sort of impression on us. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. In this week's episode, we got to chat with Adrian Chiarella, writer and director of the Australian supernatural horror film Leviticus, hitting theaters this Friday, June 19. Adrian is an award-winning filmmaker who gained acclaim with Dwarf Planet and his television work, and Leviticus marks his feature directorial debut. We dove into Adrian's background as an editor and how that has shaped his perspective and work now as a director. Adrian also shared how, as a queer teenager, he turned to horror films and connected with their themes of otherness and identity, and how those influences ultimately found their way into Leviticus. He shared his experience casting and working with the film's  actors, one of whom appeared in Talk to Me, and how they built their chemistry both on and off set (apparently playing Fortnight together works great.) We also talked A Nightmare on Elm Street, Frank Ocean, and Cure. It was a fascinating conversation with plenty of behind-the-scenes stories along the way. The 1995 John Carpenter remake of the 1960 movie stars Christopher Reeve and Kirstie Alley, and although it has a very interesting premise, doesn't deliver on the setup. While the movie is well acted, the second and third acts leave a lot to be desired with plotlines either going nowhere or being disappointing. However, there are some very interesting kills as these kids have mind control abilities forcing the parents and townspeople to die in bizarre ways. This week, the two of us decided to dive straight into one of the most talked-about and highly anticipated horror films of the year: The Backrooms. What began as a single unsettling image posted online anonymously has now evolved into an A24 feature film, already amassing over $200 million worldwide. We break down the origins of The Backrooms and how it's evolved over the years, from its roots on 4chan and the rise of liminal horror to becoming a viral YouTube sensation created by a teenager before eventually being picked up by A24. We discuss what worked, what didn't, what disappointed us, and what we hoped to see from the adaptation. And despite moments that genuinely impressed us, we found ourselves grappling with why some of the horror elements that worked so well online didn't translate nearly as well onto the big screen.  We also chatted about creepypastas, filming found footage, and Slender Man, and why some horror concepts might be more effective online than they are in theaters. If you've seen the film and have thoughts of your own, this is a great convo to dive into, so ... COME HANG OUT!!! Why do breakups hurt so much? Because neurologically, heartbreak looks almost identical to drug withdrawal. In a landmark 2010 fMRI study, Helen Fisher and her colleagues showed that the brains of the recently rejected lit up in the same reward and craving circuits — the VTA and nucleus accumbens — that drive cocaine addiction. In this episode of The Dr. Leaf Show, Dr. Caroline Leaf unpacks the neuroscience of heartbreak and why it can take at least 63 days to rewire, plus two more segments: why horror movies might actually be good for your brain (and when they're not), and a Pick My Brain Q&A tackling self-love, the attachment styles myth, unconditional love, and how to reignite the spark in a long marriage.

In our penultimate episode of #speakingintongues, we tackle one of the most brutally controversial films of the past 20 years, and possibly of all time. Directed by Pascal Laugier, MARTYRS is an unflinching portrait of trauma, pain, despair, violence, and terror, laced together with questions of belief, grief, reality, and purpose. Controversial from its creation -- written in a state of deep depression -- to its release, Martyrs is often cited as the kind of film that maybe goes too far, even if it's still too compelling to completely dismiss. It's just Nathan and Reed this week as we discuss this haunting film, which carries our strongest of cautions for viewer discretion.
