Released in 1999, the film Magnolia was film written, directed and co-produced by Paul Thomas Anderson. The movie is an epic mosaic of interrelated characters in search of happiness, forgiveness and meaning in the San Fernando Valley. The script was inspired by the music of Aimee Mann, who contributed several songs to its soundtrack.Anderson met Aimee Mann in 1996 when he asked her husband, Michael Penn, to write the score and songs for his film, Hard Eight. Mann's songs had been featured on soundtracks before but only incidentally. Anderson encouraged her to write songs for the film by sending her a copy of the script. The soundtrack album, released on Reprise Records, features Mann's songs, as well as a section of Jon Brion's score together with tracks by Supertramp and Gabrielle. Reprise released a full score album in 2000.In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Mathew Woodallhttps://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. Howie Klein has been my regular Thursday guest for over a dozen years now, but our friendship goes back further to the early 90s, when I was doing rock radio in Los Angeles and he was president of Reprise Records. When Howie left Reprise and Warner Brothers as Time Warner and AOL merged, he began devoting all of his time to progressive politics, launching Down with Tyranny and the Blue America PAC.Danny Goldberg also worked in the music industry as a personal manager, record company president, public relations man and journalist since the late 1960s. When Howie and I first met, Danny managed Nirvana, Hole, Sonic Youth, Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Brothers, Rickie Lee Jones and more. From 2005-2006, Danny was CEO of Air America Radio. That was a few years before I joined the network and hosted a nightly show there. All three of us share the common experience of working in the music industry and being very involved in progressive politics. Today, we're all dealing with our current political situation as best we can. Admittedly, I am not handling it well. Two weeks ago on the show, Howie mentioned that he had dinner with his dear old friend Danny Goldberg, and told me that Danny had some very important and insightful thoughts on surviving these dark days and fighting back, and suggested we have Danny join us on the show. So he is doing that today. They'll be here for the second half-hour.Tonight, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez will be in my neck of the woods. They're heading out west as part of Bernie's Fighting Oligarchy tour. I will be there and will bring you coverage tomorrow and Monday. They're leading the way of the resistance, but it's up to all of us. At the top of the show, I'll share some more constructive ways we can and are fighting back. It's all in our hands right now...

In Part 2 of the Tiny Tim story, we jump right back in as Tiny begins his climb to fame, performing in the gay bars of Greenwich village, New York, before landing his first record deal with Frank Sinatra's Reprise Records. We analyse Tiny's struggles with money, fame and women as Tiny becomes involved in a number of scandals that almost cost him his shot at the big time. We also take an in depth look into Tiny's first 3 studio albums including the classic, God Bless Tiny Tim, his iconic rendition of Tiptoe Through the Tulips, as well as his strange eating habits, his quirky and often inappropriate behaviour and his infamous marriage to the 17 year old Miss Vicki Budinger which controversially took place on national tv as millions around the USA and the world tuned in breaking viewership records. Bonnie McKee chats about co-writing hits with Katy Perry, including "California Gurls" and "Roar," as well as her own artist career that has resulted in successful singles such as "American Girl." PART ONE:Scott and Paul share a little preview of what's to come as they prepare to celebrate Songcraft's 10 anniversaryPART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Bonnie McKeeABOUT BONNIE McKEE:Bonnie McKee grew up as a classically trained singer and pianist, but began pursuing a pop music career while still a teen. In 2004 she released her debut album, Trouble, with Reprise Records, but soon switched her focus to working as a behind-the-scenes songwriter. She has written ten songs that have hit #1 in either the US or UK, and is best known for her work with Katy Perry, which began with the Diamond-certified and international chart-topping album, Teenage Daydream. Bonnie contributed to three songs on the album, all of which became chart-topping singles: “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).” When the deluxe Complete Confection version of the album was released, Bonnie landed two more chart-topping singles with “Part of Me” and “Wide Awake.” She went on to collaborate with Katy Perry on four songs on the follow-up album, Prism, including the Top 20 single “Birthday” and the #1 hit “Roar.” Other successful singles from the Bonnie McKee songbook include “Dynamite” for Taio Cruz, “Hold it Against Me” for Britney Spears, “C'Mon” for Kesha, and the UK chart toppers “How We Do (Party)” by Rita Ora and “I Don't Care” by Cheryl. Additionally, she's written songs for Cher, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, Bebe Rexha, Jason Derulo, Kygo, and Adam Lambert, among others. In 2013, Bonnie reemerged as an artist with the single “American Girl” on Epic Records. She recorded an entire album, but parted ways with the label and it was shelved. Enough tracks and demos leaked online over the years, however, that fans were clamoring for it. Now, more than ten years later, Bonnie has re-recorded the album. She combined the re-recorded tracks with the original release of “American Girl,” which has now been streamed 23 million times on Spotify. The end result is Hot City, an album more than a decade in the making.

New Orleans singer/songwriter Lynn Drury helped Rob get over his irrational Jeff Tweedy/Wilco bias and fully embrace their 1999 release, 'summerteeth'. Tweedy and multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett combined intricate studio experimentation with pure pop to craft a wonderfully ambiguous gem of a record. Songs discussed in this episode: Thirteen - Wilco; Blue, Fade - Lynn Drury; The Palace at 4 A.M. - Jay Bennett; I Can't Stand It, She's A Jar - Wilco; Baby Do Right - Lynn Drury; A Shot In The Arm, We're Just Friends - Wilco; Mountain Girl - Blue Mountain; I'm Always In Love, Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway (Again), How To Fight Loneliness, Via Chicago, My Darling, When You Wake Up Feeling Old, In A Future Age - Wilco; High Tide - Lynn Drury
Howie Klein has been doing a weekly segment on my show for more than a dozen years now. He and I first met some 30+ years ago on Los Angeles where I was doing (really great) music radio and he was President of Reprise Records. When Howie exited the music biz, he turned his energies toward getting real progressives elected to office. He began blogging at DownWithTyranny.com. In 2006, Howie joined forces with Heather "Digby" Parton of Digby's Hullabaloo (digbysblog.net) and John Amato of CrooksandLiars.com. They created the Blue America PAC, enlisting the help of Jacquie Propps (@Jacqrat) to help with the organizational aspects of running a PAC. Jaquie wrote "Fighting The Right Wing Since 2006" for the Blue America blog to reacquaint the blogosphere with Blue America, now in its 18th year. (Read it at https://blueamerica.crooksandliars.co...) We agreed that with the most consequential election season of our lives underway, this would be a good time to get some of the players together to recognize the work they do and shine a spotlight on this year's group of Blue America endorsed candidates. So, joining Howie and me today -- Digby, of course. And Tom Maxwell. Huh? Tom Maxwell is a musician. You probably know him from his time with the Squirrel Nut Zippers. In 2006, Tom contributed a song, "Have You Had Enough?" --sung by Rickie Lee Jones - to one of the first Blue America campaigns, that one to oust the predatory Republican Speaker of the House Denny Hastert. It was a success and the campaign was a hit. And the rest, as they say, is history! They'll all join in at around the 30 minute mark. But we'll start with some news and memories spurred by the news that OJ Simpson has died. Open the floodgates.... --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message
Howie Klein, the man behind DownWithTyranny.com and the Blue America PAC joins me every Thursday for some plain talk about politics. In election years, like this one, we talk a lot about specific races -- many of them where Blue America has endorsed a candidate. Today, Howie wrote about two races whose primaries are in full swing right now -- the CA Senate seat to replace Dianne Feinstein, and Adam Schiff's current congressional seat that he's vacating to run for the open Senate seat. That's the district Howie lives in. So we'll get the inside scoop on what's going on there. It's also voting time for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.. (For those who don't already know, Howie's career before he moved into progressive politics full-time was in the music industry. His last position was president of Reprise Records!) Howie lamented on the Book of Face about the lousy choices on his ballot... --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message
fWotD Episode 2484: Dookie Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Thursday, 22 February 2024 is Dookie.Dookie is the third studio album by the American rock band Green Day, released on February 1, 1994, by Reprise Records. The band's major label debut and first collaboration with producer Rob Cavallo, it was recorded in mid-1993 at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California. Written mostly by frontman and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, the album is heavily based around his personal experiences, with themes such as boredom, anxiety, relationships, and sexuality. The album was promoted with four singles: "Longview", "Basket Case", a re-recorded version of "Welcome to Paradise" (which originally appeared on the band's second studio album, 1991's Kerplunk), and "When I Come Around".After several years of grunge's dominance in popular music, Dookie brought a livelier, more melodic rock sound to the mainstream, and propelled Green Day to worldwide fame. Considered one of the defining albums of the 1990s and punk rock in general, it was also pivotal in solidifying the genre's mainstream popularity. Its influence permeated into the new millennium and beyond, being cited as an inspiration by many punk and pop-punk bands, as well as artists from other genres.Though the band was labeled a sell-out by some of their original fans for leaving their independent label, Lookout! Records and embracing a more polished sound, Dookie received critical acclaim upon its release. The record won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album in 1995. It was also a worldwide success, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200 in the United States and reaching top ten positions in several other countries. It was later certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, making it the band's best-selling album and one of the best-selling albums worldwide. It has been labeled by critics and journalists as one of the greatest albums of the 1990s and one of the greatest punk rock and pop-punk albums of all time; Rolling Stone placed Dookie on three iterations of their "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list, and at number 1 on their "50 Greatest Pop-Punk Albums" list. In August 2023, it was announced that a 30th anniversary deluxe edition of the album would be released on September 29, 2023, featuring outtakes, demos, and two live concert recordings. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:01 UTC on Thursday, 22 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Dookie on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Matthew Standard.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy one of the most unforgettable Fretboard Journal Podcast interviews ever. This week's guest is spiritual teacher and yogi Guru Singh. Born Gerry Pond, this one-of-a-kind guitar fanatic garnered acclaim as a folk singer in Seattle's coffee house and music scene of the '60s. He was one of the first young rock musicians to sign with Frank Sinatra's Reprise Records. Gerry then relocated to San Francisco where he found himself playing concerts with the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and others. Unfortunately, he was also a fish out of water: A sober, meditation-loving yoga living in SF's wild Haight-Ashbury scene. To compound things, his early protest songs about Vietnam resulted in him being blacklisted from radio stations and targeted by the Feds. So, in the late 1960s, Gerry safely stored his cherished Gibson J-45 and went on a yearlong quest to the deepest reaches of Mexico, a journey documented in his book, Buried Treasures. When he returned, the J-45 was still there but his music and life was completely transformed. Now known as Guru Singh, he teaches Kundalini yoga and meditation techniques to practitioners around the world, collaborates with artists like Seal, and spreads positivity wherever he goes. We talk about all this and more on this very special podcast. He shares the story of his favorite guitars, offers advice to help you get through the holidays, and even encourages a little guitar acquisition syndrome. In a Fretboard Journal first, he also teaches us all how to breathe a little better. We first spotted Guru Singh on the Rich Roll Podcast, where we couldn't help but notice all the unique acoustic guitars he employed. We knew we had to get him on the Fretboard Journal podcast one day and here, at long last, is our first interview. https://gurusingh.com/ Registration is now open to attend our 2024 Fretboard Summit: https://fretboardsummit.org/ If you enjoy this episode, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts and consider joining the Fretboard Journal's new Patreon page. In this episode we go through the Clapton's version of the Freddie King song I'm Tore Down. This one has some awesome lead work and one of blues musics greatest rhythm riffs - it's a blast to play and a must know for any blues jam or gig.English rock musician Eric Clapton recorded "I'm Tore Down" for his 1994 blues tribute album From the Cradle.[3] For his recording, Clapton uses an arrangement close to King's original, including the falsetto vocal phrases and guitar fills. Reprise Records released a compact disc promotional single in 1994, which reached number five on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.[4] Clapton has performed the song on several occasions; live recordings appear on Live in Hyde Park (1997) and John Mayall's 70th Birthday Concert (2003). Howie writes constantly at DownWithTyranny.com. Most of his posts are politically-oriented though, like me, he often veers off course into the music world. For good reason! When I first met Howie Klein some 30 years ago, he was President of Reprise Records, so it's in his blood.I never know what I'll see when I log on to DTW, and today didn't disappoint. The first thing I saw today was a post from Howie headlined, "Tim Scott And George Santos Are Both Gay Republicans— But VERY Different Gay Republicans". Whoo boy, it's going to be one of those days!!In terms of news, well, proud boy Joe Biggs was sentenced to 17 years in federal prison for seditious conspiracy. We'll have to wait until next week for Enrique Tarrio's sentencing. They do say good things are worth waiting for, I guess...

It's Friday Eve... Howie Klein is here. We talk politics, as he runs the Blue America PAC and writes a lot at DownWithTyranny.com. But we also often talk music. Before Howie went into progressive politics full-time, he was in the music industry. I met him probably close to 30 years ago when I was doing music radio in Los Angeles and Howie was president of Reprise Records! When politics gets too toxic we have somewhere else to go! Today, I'll tell you about what I didn't have time for yesterday, and that's the secret about credit cards and usurious interest rates they're charging. I did some research and I'll tell you which cards to use, if you must... Also, it appears that the actors are the next group to go on strike and join the WGA. I reached out to an old friend yesterday who happens to be on the Executive Board of SAG/AFTRA. You might remember David Jolliffe (if you're an old fart like me) from when he played Bernie on the early 70s show ROOM 222. He'll join us one day next week to fill us in on the behind-the-scenes stuff. But I'll share some of our back and forth with you today.
For May 2023, TNT dives into a classic in the world of folk, country and rock: Neil Young's third solo album, 1970's “After the Gold Rush.” We're joined by a very special guest - musician, avid record collector, Neil enthusiast, and friend of the show Denis Candy. Join us as we three learn about the genesis of the album, how it was originally viewed when it came out, and of course Neil's steadfast politics.
Fanny might be one of the most influential bands ever that many people have never heard of. David Bowie called them “one of the most important female bands in American rock,” adding they had been buried without a trace. So who was Fanny? Bobbi Jo Hart's documentary Fanny: The Right To Rock examines the first all-female rock band to release an album on a major label. Formed by two Filipina sisters, the Millington's experienced racism and sexism at an early age, and found a band to be their doorway out. On five albums released by Reprise Records between 1970 and 1974, they rocked as hard as any of their male rock and roll peers. Their story, and Hart's documentary on Fanny is a truly inspirational and overdue celebration of this hugely influential band. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Howie Klein is a fascinating man. We first met some 30+ years ago. At the time, I was doing music radio in Los Angeles and Howie was President of Reprise Records. When he saw the writing on the wall ahead of the AOL/Time Warner merger in 2000, he took the payout and got out just before everything started going to shit. Howie quickly pivoted and turned his energies toward electing progressives to office. He began blogging at DownWithTyranny.com, and formed the Blue America PAC with other progressive bloggers Digby and John Amato. And they're all still going strong. When I moved from music radio to progressive talk, Howie quickly became a regular guest, eventually joining me weekly. We've been at it for well over a dozen years already. You'd think we'd run out of things to talk about. But sadly, the state of politics today insures that we'll never be at a loss for topics - and politicians - about which to talk. Today, aside from wherever the conversation takes us, I'll definitely ask Howie about Dianne Feinstein. Howie lived in San Francisco back in the day and was friendly with Harvey Milk. I've heard that Harvey shared his private feelings about the former Mayor of SF, now the sickliest senator in Congress who refuses to stay home...
Hopefully this week's guest has already forgiven me for butchering both the pronunciation and spelling of his last name, even though I had them written in front of me.His name is Jason Buice and he's a son, a brother, a husband, a musician, a bandmate, and a heck of a nice guy.He was kind enough to drive in from LFK to record Episode #65 with me, and boy was our conversation a fascinating one.We of course talked about a few of Jason's favorite albums, and they are these:Thriller (1982), Michael JacksonU2's The Unforgettable Fire (1984)Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (1987), The CureNirvana's Nevermind (1991)OK Computer (1997), RadioheadBut we also talked a little bit about Jason's path down the river of musicianship. For starters, you can find his solo EP, Both Sides (2019) on his bandcamp, and he's got a couple of other projects there, too. And we talked about his current project, Chowk, whom you can follow on Instagram, and I encourage you to do so as they have plans to record an album here in the coming weeks. Finally, if you're catching this is some form of real time, you can catch Chowk performing live on the radio on Sunday, May 14th on KKFI, 90.1 FM. We are hangin with Hoey while he drops by The City's Backyard to chat about his 2023 Spring/Summer tour in this episode! Rock guitarist Gary Hoey has worked with legends like Joe Perry, Roger Daltrey, Yes, blues icon Johnny Winter, Robben Ford, Leslie West, and KISS drummer, Peter Criss. And he has toured and traded licks with the likes of Jeff Beck, Brian May of Queen, Ted Nugent, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Peter Frampton, and Dick Dale. With a collection of 21 albums it's no wonder Gary Hoey is listed as one of the top 100 guitarists of all time. The world renowned rock guitarist's first break came in 1987 when Ozzy Osbourne liked Hoey's tape enough to fly him to LA for an audition and encouraging him to move to the West Coast. In 1990 Hoey was signed to Reprise Records with a short lived band called Heavy Bones but followed up in 1993 with a solo album and Gary's cover of “Hocus Pocus” rocketed into the Billboard's Top 5 Rock Tracks. He went on to score the successful “Endless Summer II” soundtrack for New Line Cinema and in 1995 started a trilogy of “Ho!Ho! Hoey,” a collection of instrumental Christmas classics that continues each year in his Rockin Holiday shows. And in 2013's “Deja Blues” he came home to the blues. Gary's release in 2016, “Dust & Bones,” displayed an exuberant fusion of blues and rock. But whatever style he plays, one thing is certain, Gary Hoey is a fiery, charismatic player who connects with the crowd.Whether he's playing scorching originals or classic rock covers, his solos are thrilling and reminiscent of Clapton or Stevie Ray in their fiery youth. One thing that remains consistent is Hoey's impassioned command of the guitar. He can attack his instrument with feral intensity and then play something very soft and achingly beautiful. This ability to mix feeling, phrasing, technique and tone is the true mark of a master guitarist.http://garyhoey.com
Today is Thursday, so Howie Klein joins us from Down with Tyranny and the Blue America PAC where we usually talk politics. And there's lots to talk about today, including the travesty unfolding in Nashville right now as the TN state legislature is seeking to expel three Democrats from the legislature because they dared to stand with the protestors following last week's mass school shooting in Nashville. But Howie was a music industry icon back when we first met in Los Angeles almost 30 years ago. Before he was president of Reprise Records, Howie worked with Seymour Stein at the groundbreaking Sire Records. Stein died this week, so I'll ask Howie to share what he did that was so important. But we'll start today with John Nichols, national correspondent for The Nation magazine, and from a family who's been in Wisconsin for, I believe, seven generations. On Tuesday, Wisconsin voters made sure the state's Supreme Court would be controlled by Democrats, thereby blocking the Republicans from enacting an ancient provision from putting another nail in the coffin of women's reproductive rights.
“MY BIGGEST CRUSH”EPISODE #2 -: BLUE by Joni Mitchell (1971, Reprise)From the first ringing chords of the dulcimer, and that quavering, pain-wracked voice swooning, “I am on a lonely road, and I am traveling, traveling, traveling…” I was in love – madly, permanently enamored of Joni Mitchell. Everything about her – her unmatchable talent, her neurotic self-dramatizing, her doomed romanticism… turned me on. Not sexually. My love for Joni Mitchell was purely aesthetic, but it was undeniable and achingly real. And it set me on a self-destructive path, hooking up with a succession of difficult, complicated, brilliant women. Women I could never keep, women with whom I could never feel truly at home.I'm a sucker for talented women. Often though, such talent leaves very little oxygen to share in any room. Eventually I got wise, and after awhile my love life yielded a happier ending. But, oh, the ecstatic misery of doomed romance!Blue is counted as one of the greatest albums ever made. This is not an obscure choice, but my truth is my truth, and I must pay homage. Listening to songs like River (I wish I had a river I could skate away on…), A Case of You (I could drink a case of you…), California (Will you take me as I am, strung out on another man….?) conjure an emotional tidal surge with no boundaries, and I was pulled in by the heady undertow of yearning.Biographers will tell you that James Taylor, Graham Nash, and Cary Raditz (Carey, get out your cane…) are the inspirations for these songs, but 50 years on they hardly matter. What counts is that eternal voice, intimately confessing her regrets and desires to you, the listener. And then, it's just Joni and you, alone together, locked in an artistic embrace.“BLUE”- JONI MITCHELL – 1971 – Reprise Records 1) All I Want 2) My Old Man 3) Little Green 4) Carey 5) Blue 6) California 7) This Flight Tonight 8) River 9) A Case Of You 10) The Last Time I Saw Richard

It's Thursday, so time for our weekly hang with Howie Klein. We usually talk politics, but occasionally veer into different territory, often music related. Howie spent the bulk of his career in the music industry, where he rose to President of Reprise Records. As he writes at downwithtyranny, usually about politics, he occasionally writes up stories from his past, which all will hopefully find their way in the memoir he's writing. Today, we'll probably touch on both music and politics, but we'll also explore his newfound friend, "Hal"... aka Chat GPT. And we'll see where we wind up...And Howie had the breaking news that Donald Trump was indicted!

“Yankee Foxtrot Hotel,” the fourth studio recording by Chicago's Wilco, turned out to be their seminal album. A landmark recording released a week after 9/11, it was marred by conflict within the group, a change in drummers, and the final output before departing from Reprise Records. Yet, it became the band's most successful and continues to be regarded as one of the best albums of the 2000s. To mark its 20th anniversary and a newly remastered and expanded edition that includes 18 unreleased tracks and an extensive booklet, we celebrate with one of our favorite “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” songs, “Jesus, Etc.”
It's Thursday, the day of the week that Howie Klein joins in. Howie was president of Reprise Records when I first met him, probably 25-30 years ago in LA. So our discussions often veer off into the music world. Just some context there. Since leaving Reprise and Warner Bros, Howie's been ensconced in progressive politics. He blogs at DownWithTyranny.com and runs the Blue America PAC along with Heather Digby Parton and John Amato. His latest piece up at DWT is "Good for American: More Ro Khanna, Less Herschel Walker." That sounds like a good place to start today's discussion...

Howie's back! Howie Klein has done a weekly segment with me on this show for over a decade now. He's been gone for the past month- I'll let him explain why. But he's thankfully back today and boy do we have a lot to talk about. Of course, we need to find out how he's doing. And while he was out, his former boss passed away. Mo Ostin was led Warner Brothers Records for many years and was widely respected by everyone in the industry-- artists, employees and everyone else. Including Howie Klein who worked under Mo as President of Reprise Records. I've been waiting for his return to ask Howie to tell us a bit about the great Mo Ostin. Of course, there have been a few primary elections since Howie was last here, and a lot of action in Congress too. We'll start Howie's segment a few minutes earlier than usual because there's so much to discuss. And just a head up-- I'll be out next Thursday, undergoing my own surgical procedure. Are we having fun yet?
CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of grief, witchcraft, loss, death, murder, reanimation, possession. This week we're tackling a rom-com cult classic that's as integral to fall as pumpkin spice lattes. And just like those delicious confections, this movie is a little bit sweet, and a little bit spicy. And no, it isn't perfect by any means; in fact it's kind of a mess. But when you have two giant movie stars like Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock having an impossibly huge amount of fun, and a really strong supporting cast, it's hard to not make a decent movie. Now we just have to imagine what could have been if the studio wasn't so scared of making a genuinely cute but spooky movie. CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of suicide and depiction of suicide, eugenics, disability. This week we discuss a film that honestly deserves a better status than cult classic. The sheer ingenuity and thoughtfulness baked into a science fiction parable about eugenics from 1997 is remarkable. Andrew Niccol has made some other great films along the way, but this stands apart as a finely crafted piece; not perfect, but not needing to be. And then you have truly great performances from three actors either on the verge or just coming into movie stardom, all with nuance and subtlety that makes this film age like fine wine. Make sure to scrub away any trace of who you are as we discuss Gattaca this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of stalking, neglect, murder, inappropriate behavior, assault, kidnapping.. This week we're touching on a VHS classic that was a staple of one of the hosts' movie-watching days, but not so much for the other. And that's not unexpected, because this movie was branded a failure pretty much from its inception. Yet even massive studio intervention and an astronomically high budget due to its star can't fully tank this movie, because the concept, the directing, and the performances are still too fun to ignore. And as iconic as his previous films had been, Jim Carrey's doing some of his best comedic work in this movie because he gets to also be a little terrifying. I'm back after a day off hanging with my kid. And what a strange day it is. Florida became even more FloriDUH today with the actions of the governor, whose nickname I've now changed. It was MoRon DeathSentence. Now it's just Ron deSatan, because he is truly evil. I'll explain his latest dictatorial and racist move, with an assist from State Rep Angie Nixon. Then we'll check in with Howie Klein of Down with Tyranny and the Blue America PAC. We will talk politics as usual, but he has a unique perspective about the big story of the day... the demise of CNN+ after just 3 weeks. There's perhaps 3 degrees of separation, if that, between Howie and this story. He'll explain how he exited Warner Brothers, where he was President of Reprise Records, when Time/Warner merged with AOL, what seems like a hundred years ago... Yes, Howie has another fascinating story to tell. And it probably foreshadowed what happened today...
Actress Goldie Hawn became an “It Girl” in the 1960's as a cast member of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. Then she quickly won an Oscar off of her first major film role. With her career rolling, Reprise Records signed her to make an an album. This is the story of Goldie Hawn's Goldie, from 1972.
