Learning from the wisdom of Zen meditation. In this episode Gillian chats with the Revd. Chris Collingwood, a Christian Priest, former canon of York minster and Zen master.   The conversation explores the following:  Chris explains how he felt called to be a priest. What Zen is. How Chris got interested in Zen. How he became a Zen Master. How Zen practice fitted with his role as a canon at York Minster. Christian theological connections with Zen and how it differs. How Zen impacts on how people relate to the world. The experience of non duality.  How Chris responds to folk in spiritual need - does he draw more on his Zen practice or Christian faith? The practice of compassionate non judgement towards others and ourselves. The one thing that Chris offers as encouragement to listeners. Links: Chris's book: Zen Wisdom for Christians. Nailing down what exactly is "power pop" can be frustrating (we did a whole roundtable on it!), but the "power" end of it is usually found in the guitar section. From the big riffs of Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen to Robert Quine's excited guitar leads on Matthew Sweet albums, just because it's "pop" doesn't mean it doesn't rock. For their second album, Fountains of Wayne duo Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood recruited former Belltower guitarist Joey Porter and former Poises drummer Brian Young to complete the foursome. Two veteran players mean a tightened rhythm section and a bigger guitar sound that allows the band to expand their sound, touching not only on power pop from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, but elements of Britpop, psychedelia, and Queen grandiosity.   Songs In This Episode Intro - Red Dragon Tattoo 13:00 - Utopia Parkway 17:48 - Lost In Space 25:45 - Denise Outro - A Fine Day For A Parade   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. This week's guest, writer/drummer S.W. Lauden, first wrote about NY band Fountains Of Wayne in the book 'Go All The Way: A Literary Appreciation of Power Pop'. During that time, he listened to their third - and breakout - album 'Welcome Interstate Managers' for months on repeat, and eventually formulated a theory that it's actually a sly, sophisticated Gen-X concept album. To be clear, this is solely HIS theory. Nonetheless, it lent itself to a really fun conversation, and the pure-pop mastery of Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger's songs cannot be denied! Songs featured in this episode: Valley Winter Song - Fountains Of Wayne (NPR Tiny Desk Concert); Next Aquarius - The Brothers Steve; Go All The Way - Raspberries; Radiation Vibe - Fountains Of Wayne; Fight Test - The Flaming Lips; That Thing You Do - The Wonders; Mexican Wine, Bright Future In Sales, Stacy's Mom - Fountains Of Wayne; Buddy Holly - Weezer, Just What I Needed - The Cars; Hackensack - Fountains Of Wayne; Hackensack - Katy Perry (Live MTV Unplugged, 2009); No Better Place, Valley Winter Song, All Kinds Of Time - Fountains Of Wayne; Rock-n-Roll Star - Oasis; Little Red Light, Hey Julie, Fire Island, Bought For A Song, Supercollider, Yours And Mine, Elevator Up - Fountains Of Wayne; Popular - Nada Surf; Hackensack - Fountains Of Wayne (Live Jersey 4 Jersey feat. On this episode, we take a deep dive into the third album by the power-pop band, Fountains of Wayne: Welcome Interstate Managers.  After two critically acclaimed, but in the eyes of the Atlantic Records commercially underperforming LPs, the label dropped them. The band shopped around for a label, but with little success, As a result, Welcome Interstate Managers. was self-financed. The record saw the songwriting duo of Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood crafting songs about the alienation and working day travails of young adulthood. The album spawned a Grammy-nominated hit “Stacy's Mom”, and also garnered them a “Best New Artist” nod as well. As long-time fans of the band already knew, “Stacy's Mom”  only scratched the surface of what the band had to offer.  Without the backing of a major label, the band crafted an LP of 16 pop tunes containing some of the most deftly written funny,  heartbreaking, and poignant lyrics on just about any pop album made before or since.Sadly, the world lost Adam Schlesinger, arguably one of the best, and certainly one of the most prolific songwriters of the 21st Century, to Covid in 2020.

Of course, even *he* doesn't really know what "power pop" even means, other than being kind of a dismissive description. Now Chris has broken away and taken his music in a new direction with Look Park, a more idiosyncratic musical offering. But what rewards does today's music industry hold for a guy who's trying to redefine himself as a musician? And can the fellow who sang on "Stacy's Mom" find a foothold in the savage mess that is 2016's entertainment landscape?
