EPISODE NOTES: The shirtwaist emerged in the mid-late nineteenth century. It soon became a symbol of the modern working woman, and by the early twentieth century, shirtwaists were mass manufactured and widely available. However, this would come at a devastating cost to the workers (mostly women) who produced them. On the afternoon of March 25, 1911, fire broke out at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. This would go down in history as one of the worst industrial disasters in American history and its impact would be felt more than a century later. This is one of the essential Squeeze singles. Not only do you get the great A side featuring one of Paul Carrack's best vocals ever, but also a terrific, previously unreleased B side. Note that Elvis Costello was co-producer of these tracks. "Tempted" was one of many fine recordings from their top-notch LP, East Side Story. Though the group had been huge in their native U.K. for several years, that album was the first one to garner any attention State-side, and this was their first chart single here. (Though, oddly, it wasn't even released on 45 rpm in the U.K.!) The single has a slightly edited version of the 4:02 album track. Note: This beautiful copy comes in its gorgeous picture sleeve and Near Mint audio with just a few light pops.

Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Scott Immergut. Scott is the CEO of Ricochet.com and the Ricochet Audio Network. He is the long-time producer of the Ricochet Podcast and the GLoP Culture podcast with Jonah Goldberg, Rob Long, and John Podhoretz. He's also the Executive Producer of The Hoover Institution's Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson andGood Fellows, with Niall Ferguson, H. R. McMaster, and John Cochrane. Scott's Music Pick: SqueezeThey might do it down on Camber Sands and at Waikiki, but in the mainland U.S., Squeeze was mostly a rumor for much of the band's career. Highest charting album? #32. Just two Top 40 singles. Squeeze, unfortunately, was destined to join the long list of very British bands that never quite crossed over to the States. If you know Squeeze at all, it might be because of the placement of “Tempted” on the soundtrack for Reality Bites. Or, perhaps a roommate at college had the Singles 45's and Under collection on CD, as most roommates seemed to in the 1990s. But there's a heck of a lot more to the story. This is, of course, where Political Beats steps in to solve the problem. Because the truth is you won't find music any better than what Squeeze produced, particularly at their peak from 1978-1982. The highly literate lyrics of Chris Difford, filled with sharp storytelling and British allusions, paired perfectly with the beautiful, melodic, and sometimes quite complicated music written by Glenn Tilbrook. Tilbrook's soulful tenor took most of the leads (except, famously, on perhaps the band's best-known song, “Tempted”) while Difford's deep croaking voice contributed backing vocals. The duo were called the heirs to the Lennon/McCartney songwriting throne, though the comparison never really fit and actually harmed the band's output, as we discuss on the show. But they were something special, producing some of the finest pop songs of the era, like “Another Nail In My Heart,” “Pulling Mussels,” “Up the Junction,” and “Is It Love”.The band broke up in 1982, making way for a pretty awful Tilbrook/Difford duo album that was a naked reach for the charts. Squeeze reunited in 1985, fell apart in 1999, got back together in 2007 and remain a recording and touring entity to this day. Pick up almost any album from their collection and you're going to hear at least a handful of well-crafted, melodic, memorable tunes. If nothing else, you'll learn about a whole bunch of British slang, like “argybargy,” “up the junction,” “that's not cricket,” and “slap and tickle.” But we're pretty sure you're going to love this music, as well. It's not just an East Side Story, it's one everyone can enjoy on Political Beats.

What the Riff?!?
1982 - October: Squeeze “Singles - 45 and Under”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 6, 2021 44:44

Squeeze came out of the mid-70's New Wave scene in the UK, but would cross genres into Rockabilly, R&B, and Psychedelia by the early 80's.  In 1982 they released Singles - 45's and Under as a compilation album of their biggest hits.  Squeeze was led by two singer songwriters, Chris Dilford (rhythm guitar and vocals) and Glenn Tilbrook (keyboards, lead guitar, vocals) who composed most of their material.  At the time of the release of this “greatest hits” album, the band had broken up, leaving only Dilford and Tilbrook as a duet.  The pair would normally work with Dilford writing the lyrics and Tilbrook writing and singing the music.  Squeeze was inspired by the Kinks, the Beatles, David Bowie, and Elvis Costello (who co-produced their breakthrough album, East Side Stories).  They started when Dilford stole money from his mom's pocketbook to place an ad for a guitarist "for his band," which didn't exist.  Tilbrook was the only one who responded, and the rest, as they say, was history. The group wove stories with their songs, usually lighthearted, with a healthy sense of humor.  While Wayne and Bruce are away, friends of the show Todd Hendricks and Bill Cook join Rob and Brian for this album feature. TemptedThe first commercial breakthrough comes from their fourth studio album, “East Side Story.” It is unusual because it features Paul Carrack on lead vocals rather than Glenn Tilbrook or Chris Dilford.  The sound was inspired by The Temptations, and the lyrics were inspired from Dilford's experiences in touring North America.Up the JunctionThis deeper cut was originally released in 1979 on their second album "Cool for Cats."  Glenn Tilbrook takes on his normal role as lead singer.  This is a little bit of working class humor about a man living with a woman who becomes pregnant.  The song is unusual in that it doesn't have a chorus, but tells the story in a "stream of consciousness" style.Pulling Mussels (from the Shell)Originally released on their third studio album, Argybargy, this track is an audio snapshot of a British budget holiday camp by the sea.  It did not hit the US charts, but got airplay on College radio stations.  "Pulling Mussels" is British slang for sex.  There are lots of humorous lyrics in this story.Black Coffee in BedThe first single from the fifth Squeeze album, "Sweets from a Stranger," and was a hit on the US Mainstream Chart - the only song to chart from that album.  Elvis Costello and Paul Young sing backing vocals on this track about a lost love. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme from the television series "St. Elsewhere”This hospital-centered show debuted in October 1982.  The stories centered around a Catholic hospital named Saint Eligius.  Howie Mandel would get his big break as a member of this cast. STAFF PICKS:Jack & Diane by John CougarBrian brings us a famous “little ditty” about high school romance by John Cougar before he took on his real last name.  Though some thought it was autobiographical, John Mellencamp has said that it is a story about what he observed in small town America.  Mellencamp didn't like the song at first and didn't want to release it, but was fortunately convinced to do so by others.Abracadabra by the Steve Miller BandBill Cook (aka “Lil‘ Wayne”) features a hit from Miller's 12th studio album.  Though we're not convinced that this is Miller's best work (and the video is horrible), the “breathy synthesizer” and pop sensibilities gave it significant airplay on both pop and rock stations. The lyrics were inspired by Diana Ross.Somebody's Baby by Jackson BrowneSpecial guest Todd Hendricks' staff pick was the last Jackson Browne song to chart.  It didn't appear on any Browne album until years later on a "Greatest Hits" album.  It was released on the soundtrack from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."  Browne was originally known as a songwriter before he rolled out his solo work. When the War Is Over by Cold ChiselRob's closes out the staff picks with a track recommended by Mark Whyte, a friend of the show from Australia.  Cold Chisel is a very popular band in Australia, but is not well known in the United States. This is off their 1982 album, "Circus Animals" and features multiple singers taking turns on lead vocals. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Spunky by Bob JamesThis week's podcast closes out with a jazz instrumental from James' 1982 album "Hands Down."

Ray Charles - The Sun Died (1968)  Ray Charles - Understanding (1968) This song only reached #46 in 1968, but it was a big enough hit to inspire the odd-ball takeoff recorded by The Red Shadow. It contains the unfortunate little snippet:  My old lady also understands that a man must have respect What I mean is, if she must play around don't let me catch her, because what I don't see can't hurt me, you understand? But on the other hand, If I should ever catch her I'm not gonna talk about-a and call her a bunch of bad names like you all might No no mh What I'm gonna do, I'm gonna go down-town to the Hardware store and buy myself a double blade ax, Come back, square off, and believe her soul's gonna Belong to the good lord Because her head's gonna belong to me, and I Guarantee she'll know what I mean when I'll say... The Red Shadow - Understanding Marx (1975) Red Shadow was an odd outfit performing polemical rock and roll from the mid-1970s. The core of the group was three ideologically minded economists who met at the University of Michigan in the early 1970s. They decided to form a band to preach the urgent message of left-wing economics.  Red Shadow put out two albums, Live at the Panacea Hilton (1975) and Better Red (1978) [Ed: WHICH I JUST BOUGHT FOR YOU!!]. Red Shadow's song “Gone Gone Gone” is a parody of the Beach Boys' “Fun Fun Fun” in which the malign corporate overlords will be “gone gone gone when the workers take their power away.” Similarly, “Anything Good” reworks Chuck Berry's “Johnny B. Goode” to accommodate the following lyric:  They may know how to serve the ruling corporate brass But they'll never have the knowledge of the working class No no, no they don't know know know Anything good Sammy Davis Jr. - The People Tree (1972) Written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse, who also wrote Sammy's only #1 hit, "The Candy Man". That song was from the soundtrack to the movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. "The People Tree" was, in fact, the follow-up single, and it sank without a trace.  Gordon Parks - Blowin' Your Mind (1972) With vocals by O. C. Smith, whose big hit was "Little Green Apples". Talk about trying to make lightning strike twice (see "The People Tree")! O. C. Smith had been recording since the mid-'50s, starting out as Ocie Smith. An excellent stylist. I could and should do a whole show about him.  Leonard Nimoy - Spock Thoughts (1967) The Beach Bums (alias for Doug Brown and the Omens) - The Ballad of the Yellow Beret (1966) With Bob Seger(!) on vocals. Look at the composer.  From AllMusic: Despite a meager recorded output, Doug Brown and the Omens continue to hold a key place in Detroit rock and roll history as a launching pad for the young Bob Seger. Brown was already fronting the Omens when he first met Seger in 1964, soon inviting the aspiring singer/songwriter to join the band; financed by Del Shannon, sometime around 1965 the group cut a single, "TGIF"/"First Girl," which represents Seger's first known official recording. In January 1966, Brown produced Seger's regional solo blockbuster "East Side Story," the record credited with making the singer a Detroit superstar; the following summer, he also helmed Seger's "Heavy Music," another local smash.  Which doesn't excuse this particularly tone-deaf single. I guess no one thought their darker moments would be around in 2021.  The Osmonds - Havin' A Party (1975) Gentle Giant - Weekend Cowboy (1970) The Isley Brothers - Sweet Season/Keep On Walkin' (1972) Pat Boone - Wish You Were Here, Buddy (1966) James William Guercio  - Tell Me (1973) Terry Kath on vocals, uncredited.  Bob McGrath - Sir Duke (1977) The Utica Club Natural Carbonation Beer Drinking Song (1968) The band playing on this is the Chicago-based The Trolls. Richard Berry - Doin' It (1973) Richard Berry wrote and recorded the original 'Louie, Louie,' later performed by The Kingsmen. It is the second most-covered song in the history of rock music. Be Thankful For What You Got (inst.) - William DeVaughn (1974) From Wikipedia: DeVaughn was a salaried government employee as a drafting technician and a part-time singer. He wrote a song called "A Cadillac Don't Come Easy", which was eventually re-written to become "Be Thankful for What You Got", in 1972. He spent $900 towards getting it recorded with Omega Sound, a Philadelphia production house. The record producer at Omega, John Davis (a member of the MFSB studio session group), came up with a smooth arrangement, eventually booking time to record at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, used by Philadelphia International Records.  The song was released on Roxbury Records, a subsidiary of Chelsea Records, run by industry veteran Wes Farrell. You know him from his work with The Partridge Family.  The record sold nearly two million copies on its release in spring 1974, reaching No. 1 on the US Billboard R&B chart and No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. With a sound and content influenced by Curtis Mayfield, its simple and encouraging lyrics hit home, to the extent that it became featured on gospel radio stations. When his success as a recording artist seemed guaranteed, DeVaughn quit his government job. DeVaughn released an album, mainly of songs with a religious character, and its second single, "Blood Is Thicker than Water", reached No. 10 R&B and No. 43 pop later in 1974; "Give the Little Man a Great Big Hand" had only minor R&B chart success early the following year. Live, DeVaughn preached to and admonished his audience from the stage [Ed: Just like George Harrison!]. He lost interest in the music industry not long afterward, working in a record store and again as a draftsman. Dave Dudley - Coffee, Coffee, Coffee (1965) Written by Tom T. Hall.   Terry Jacks - Put The Bone In (1974) Lee Edwards (The Christian Con Man) - Maui Girl (1983) From one of the biggest inspirations for this show, for better or worse, 365 Days Project: "The Christian Con Man Goes Hawaiian" is like a three-wheeled Radio Flyer rolling down a rocky hill. It starts slow but careens out of control by the journey's end. The track "Maui Girl" appears at the point when Lee Edwards is really picking up momentum (or another glass of cheap whiskey). "KIMCHEE LOVIN'!! I SHOOK HER COCONUTS!" UK - In The Dead of Night (1979) This is the almost never-heard single recorded with Terry Bozzio on drums, instead of the original with the also-great Bill Bruford.  Bill Haley and the Comets - Me and Bobby McGee (1972) The Four Tops - So Deep Within You (1973) Odd to hear The Four Tops cover The Moody Blues. This has to be Justin Heyward on lead guitar. HAS to be.  IS. Here is an article. Fanny - Conversation With a Cop (1970) From Discogs: Fanny was an American rock band, active in the early 1970s. They were one of the first all-female rock groups to achieve critical and commercial success, including two Billboard Hot 100 top 40 singles. The group was founded by guitarist June Millington and her sister, bassist Jean, who had been playing music together since they moved from the Philippines to California in the early 1960s. After playing in several bands, they attracted the interest of producer Richard Perry who signed them to Reprise Records in 1969 as Fanny. The band recorded four albums together before June Millington quit the group. Following a final album, Fanny disbanded in 1975. Lee Dorsey - Yes We Can Can (1970)  Jackie Lynton - The Ballad Of Hank McCain  (1969) From the soundtrack to "Gli Intoccabili" (aka "Machine Gun McCain"); Written by Ennio Morricone. Success came early – at the age of 19 she was signed to J Records, which was founded by the legendary Clive Davis. She was nominated for a Grammy for her debut album, East Side Story, but found the major label experience soul destroying, and was dropped several years later. Bowed but not broken she set about finding her true voice and rebuilding her career, and has since released three more albums and earned another two Grammy nominations, the latest being for her 2020 single, “See Me”. We talk about the roller coaster ride of Emily's career and what she learned along the way, as well as her upbringing in New York, her memories of recording on Nas's album Street's Disciple, what it was like auditioning for Clive Davis and much, much more.

Robert Emmet Chambers Jr. was dubbed the Preppy Killer by the media after murdering 18-year-old Jennifer Levin in NYC's Central Park. He was a rich white boy from New York - and despite how hard he tried, money and good looks couldn't get him out of murder charges. Then one Saturday morning a Lululemon employee goes to open the store for the day, but she finds the shop a mess and a dead coworker. Who could have done this? Was it two masked men? Mr. B In Conversation with Mike Noriega, Melissa “Lil Smiley” Dueñas and Monica “Moniloca” Robles “Lowrider oldies” are not the rock n’ roll classics of yesteryear America; they are the underground soul classics of the Chicano community. These sentimental ballads continue to be widely popular amongst numerous Chicano generations, from baby boomers to millennials alike. East Side Story, an oldies compilation released in the late 1970’s, quickly set itself apart from the rest, by using photos of Chicanos and lowriders for their album covers, a rarity in popular music. Although the albums have since become synonymous with Chicano cultural nostalgia, the people involved in the series remain shrouded in mystery until recently. Mike Noriega, invited the elusive Mr. B, the East Side Story creator, onto dublab to discuss the formation of the influential series. The show was co-hosted by Lowrider Oldies radio hosts, Melissa “Lil Smiley” Dueñas and Monica “Moniloca” Robles. Dueñas is the founder of the East Side Story Project, for which she has been locating the people and places on the covers of the 12 East Side Story albums. The project has primarily been realized through social media and she is in the process of creating a documentary web series about her findings. In Conversation is produced by dublab. Sound editing and music are by Matteah Baim. Due to rights reasons music from the original broadcast has been shortened. To hear more, please visit dublab.com.

John Wilson continues with his new series in which he talks to leading performers and songwriters about the album that made them or changed them. Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios. Programme 3. Squeeze's 'East Side Story' with Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford. Originally intended as a four-sided double LP with each side using a different producer (Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello), East Side Story was released in 1981 as a single LP with 14 songs. With it Squeeze moved away from their traditional 'new wave' sound to a more varied mix of genres that took in rockabilly, R&B, blue-eyed soul, Merseybeat, and psychedelia. With tracks like Tempted, Is That Love, Messed Around and Labelled with Love (which was only on the album because eventual producer Elvis Costello persuaded Glenn Tilbrook it should be included) the album is packed with keen, precise, funny and sad lyrics about lovers, drunks, deadbeats and lonely working girls - or as Chris Difford describes them: 'suburban short stories'. Complete versions of the songs performed in the programme (as well as some that weren't) can be heard on the 'Mastertapes' pages on the Radio 4 website. The B-side of the programme, where it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions, can be heard on Tuesday 29th December at 3.30pm. Producer: Paul Kobrak.

The East Side story: How executive uncertainty created an accession conditionality that never was

A presentation given by Research Fellow Cristina Parau at Wolfson College on February 24th 2009. Dr Parau is also a member of the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies in Oxford. Europeanization scholars study the impact of the European Union (EU) on domestic politics. The literature on the impact of the EU on the domestic politics of accession countries in Eastern Europe has focussed too narrowly on the formal conditions for accession to the EU stemming from Brussels. Accession conditionality and the EU body of legislation (the acquis) which the accession countries must adopt have been claimed to be the drivers of domestic change. Research has omitted the class of phenomena where no real EU rule exists yet domestic change happens as if there were, or where an EU rule does exist yet has little or no impact. This paper examines several cases of such phenomena. It reveals how transnational networks outside Brussels, but with help from inside, were able to (re-)construct accession conditionality amid the wider enlargement context. Some networks, by heightening its uncertainty and 'accession anxiety', made the accession candidate government constrain itself before a phantom 'extra-conditionality' where virtually no EU acquis existed and Brussels declined formal intervention; others emboldened it to defy real conditionality where the acquis commanded obedience and Brussels intervened forcefully. When uncertainty and anxiety are high, an accession candidate will be susceptible to irrational influence, as of an objectively unreal conditionality; whereas, when uncertainty and anxiety are low, the candidate may even get away with flouting real conditionality.
