Dom welcomes Staff Sergeant Ryan Pitts, a Medal of Honor recipient who's serving as Honorary Captain at Saturday's Flyers game and Sunday's Eagles game as an ambassador for Toyota's Hiring Our Heroes. First, Pitts tells us about his service, explaining why it's hard for so many Veteran's to talk about their service, particularly Medal of Honor winners who saw some horrible things. Then, Dom delves into Pitts' Honorary Captain status, asking him a favor at the Flyers game, yearning for more fighting in the greatest show on ice. Then, Pitts tells us a bit about Toyota's Hiring Our Heroes initiative, explaining why he's gotten involved with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, and telling how listeners themselves can help some vets. Then, Dom spends the remainder of the hour discussing the rise of antisemitism in the United States as the conflict in Gaza continues. (Photo by Getty Images)

13JUL2008: Tasked with setting up a new outpost in the Waygal district of Nuristan province, SGT Ryan Pitts and his platoon made their way the district center of Wanat. Arriving on 08JUL2008, the platoon went about building the outpost but due to construction delays and logistics restrictions, progress was slow and far from complete after a few days. On the morning of the 13th, a group of approximately 200 enemy fighters assaulted the position from multiple directions. Starting the engagement with a concentration of RPG fire, the enemy force knocked out a few heavy weapons and hammered a small outpost, OP Topside, that protected the eastern edge of the new base. Sitting in OP Topside, SGT Pitts, along with the others alongside him, was wounded in the initial assault. Despite his wounds, SGT Pitts quickly got on with his defense of the American position. SGT Pitts responded with rifle fire, lobbing grenades as fighters came within mere yards of his position and helped to coordinate indirect strikes just outside the friendly lines. Seriously wounded, SGT Pitts held the position through a half hour of intense, close range combat. By holding his ground, SGT Pitts prevented the enemy from overrunning OP Topside and likely taking American prisoners in the process. For his actions, SGT Ryan Pitts would be awarded the Medal of Honor.

A force of over 200 had launched an assault using grenades, machine guns, and small arms fire, engulfing the Observation Post and inflicting heavy casualties. Although seriously wounded, Sergeant Pitts took control of the post and returned fire on the enemy. Unable to stand on his own and near death, he continued to lay suppressive fire until a reinforcement team arrived. Sergeant Pitts assisted the team by giving up his main weapon and gathering ammunition while continually lobbing fragmentary grenades. Sergeant Pitts' actions prevented the enemy from overrunning the post, capturing fallen American soldiers, and ultimately gaining fortified positions on higher ground from which to attack. Here are ways you can share this inspiring story and interview with your middle – high school students:Share Sergeant Pitts' story with your class.Watch the recording above to share and discuss with your class.Take advantage of the free lessons provided by the Medal of Honor Character Development Program. I just returned from the 2019 Student Veterans of America (SVA) National Conference (NatCon). It was my fourth conference in five years. I've been to two as a student Veteran, and two on behalf of VA. Each year this gathering proves to be more powerful than the last. SVA saw a 30% attendance boost since last year's conference, hosting more than 2,300 student Veterans and stakeholders. The three-day event featured keynotes from Secretary Robert Wilkie, Medal of Honor recipient Ryan Pitts, and President of SVA, Jared Lyon. Jared has been on the podcast a few times in the past, including a sit-down I had with him at last year's NatCon. Each time he speaks with us, he has the same passion and excitement about the success of student Veterans as he did the time before. In this year's interview, that we recorded at NatCon 2019, Jared shares what it means for SVA to be "left of bang," tells us about the amazing group of Student Veteran of the Year finalists, and what SVA's priority in 2019.

On the one year anniversary of Hazard Ground, it's probably fitting that we share part one of the two part story of how Staff Sergeant Ryan M. Pitts received the Medal of Honor for his actions in combat. His is a story that defines the reason we do the podcast every week - to tell the stories of service, sacrifice, of unbreakable spirit, and strength in the face of insurmountable odds, with the hope that these stories will help others, whether they've served in the military or not. Sergeant Pitts received the Medal of Honor with humility and grace, and it's evident by his words that he doesn't believe it was just him who earned the Medal of Honor, but it was him alongside every one of his fellow soldiers who fought bravely on that dark day of July 13, 2008, along with those who didn't return. And Ryan Pitts, who is now out of the Army, understands the duty that comes with the recognition of distinguished gallantry. Hear how Ryan Pitts became a recipient of the Medal of Honor, and what he's doing now to carry on the legacy of his fallen brothers, on this one year anniversary episode of Hazard Ground!
