Mobility exercises are movements that help your body move more freely and easily. They focus on improving your joints' range of motion and how well your muscles work together during movement. Unlike stretching, which focuses mainly on lengthening a muscle, mobility exercises also work on strength and control in those movements. These exercises make daily activities, workouts, and even walking feel smoother and less stiff, while reducing the risk of injury.•Examples: Think of things like rotating your shoulders, bending and twisting your spine, or shifting your hips to loosen them up.”Mobility exercises are important for women over age 40. Ryan Yusella (@themeatball365_2.0) is a personal trainer and specializes in helping people move better to become pain free, resilient, stronger, and more badass overall. Ryan has been through his own tough experiences with pain and injuries and found his own unique way through it. He uses this experience to coach others to find solutions to their movements problems. Ryan coaches out of Brooklyn, NY. Ryan is one of those people who you see videos of the exercises and movements he's capable of, and can't help thinking that he “must be so lucky”. And then when you talk to him, you realize that it's exactly because he's been unlucky with injuries that he learned how to train and move the way he's now capable. Strength training IS mobility training and the way Ryan speaks about training exemplifies this perfectly. You don't start by being able to do crazy stuff - you start where you are, and build from there. In the episode, Ryan and I discuss this at length, and he gives some excellent actionable tips on how you can find your entry point into mobility training and moving better overall. Ryan has a ton of great training knowledge to share and this is an episode I believe you'll want to listen to more than once because it's so packed with information. They also touch on the decision to use a guide dog and the need for proper training. They explore the different training options available for children, adults, and older adults, including schools for the blind and vocational rehabilitation services. They also discuss the role of technology and daily living aids in enhancing the lives of individuals with vision loss. Takeaways Orientation and mobility training is crucial for individuals with vision loss, starting from a young age. Using a guide dog is a personal decision, but it's important to have good cane skills before considering a guide dog. Children can receive orientation and mobility training through their school's IEP, while adults can seek training through vocational rehabilitation services. Simple daily living aids, such as talking watches and clocks, can make a big difference in the lives of individuals with vision loss. Technology, such as smartphones and assistive apps, can also be helpful, but proper training is necessary to make the most of these tools. Today I'm joined by Matt Phili, a mobility training coach and founder of Primal Mobility. Whether a grappler or striker, most martial artists need greater mobility. However, most of the mobility routines you see around Instagram really won't cut it, and stretching isn't necessarily good mobility work either -- at least on its own. In this episode, Matt unpacks his approach to mobility training: not simply as a stretching routine, but as an approach to strength in progressively deeper ranges of motion. Primal Mobility is unique in that it feels more like accessory exercises in a strength program than a stretching protocol, including sets and reps. In the second half of the episode, we dive into more grappling and striking-specific advice on building and maintaining mobility. Topics include guard-play and guard retention, bridging, as well as higher, more powerful kicks. Finally, we discuss the importance of training outside of neutral spine and in compromised positions to help prevent injuries during the course of real life combat sports performance. A quick note, Matt doesn't come from an Ecological Dynamics or CLA framework. I've had other guests on that aren't ecological before, but I haven't done a good job of making that clear. --- Join the newsletter now: https://combatlearning.com/newsletter --- Where to find Matt... He has one of the best outdoor home gyms around, and is a phenomenal coach with a deep understanding of mobility training and how to progress clients from beginners to advanced safely and efficiently. Also, he's an NFL shareholder. I met Phil through mutual contacts online and then we finally met in person at a fitness conference in Edmonton. Phil has amazing energy and is definitely a person you want to be around. He brings all of this energy and passion to his coaching and it's so obvious why he's a great coach: he cares A LOT, and, he knows his stuff. There's a lot that goes into designing a good workout program, especially for people who come from a wide variety of athletic backgrounds with various levels of experience and injuries or health issues. You can't just be memorizing exercises and making everyone do the same things in this scenario, and this is where Phil excels. Most of this conversation was centered around how to improve your mobility, and how to choose exercises, or scale exercises up/down to suit your current needs, goals, and abilities. Do you experience lingering injuries that just won't seem to heal? Do you want to find a way to supercharge your results? Mobility training is probably the most overlooked component of a workout program. This episode reads from Chapter 3, Mobility Training, of Smarter Workouts: The Science of Exercise Made Simple; it's all about the benefits of mobility training on this episode of All About Fitness.
