Happy Valentine's Day, America. Tulsi Gabbard is confirmed, Elon Musk is ransacking our government, the FBI is being purged, Trump and Hegseth are abandoning Ukraine. And Putin is coming to visit America. What a great time for our enemies. The doors are wide open for them everywhere. Putin must be smiling from ear to ear. We really need that upside down American flag emoji right about now. And we also need truly patriotic, candid, courageous and unafraid voices of reason. And we've got one of the best. Bob Kerrey (@KerreyBob) is a Navy SEAL Vietnam Veteran, Medal of Honor Recipient, former Governor and Senator from Nebraska, member of The 9/11 Commission and constant voice of conscience for America. Lots of people talk tough. Bob Kerrey's lived tough. And he's not holding back on Elon Musk, Trump, Pete Hegseth, Tulsi Gabbard and what we're facing as a nation. He's got advice for Democrats on how to connect with real Americans and explains why he went against his own party to support Independent Navy Veteran Dan Osborn for Senate last year in Nebraska. He also shares his heroic journey of overcoming adversity, having part of his leg amputated, why he chooses happiness every day and what it's like to have a Navy ship named after him. He's a brilliant, honest, funny and inspiring American hero. And this is an episode you're not gonna wanna miss. The Ultimate Sacrifice: Honoring Corporal Jason Dunham's Legacy In this week's Team Never Quit Podcast, we learn the vivid details of the events leading up to the courage, love, and self-sacrifice made by Medal of Honor recipient, Corporal Jason L. Dunham of Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines in Karabilah, Iraq. What a leader by example Jason was - to the point of throwing himself onto a grenade in an effort to save his comrades. Marcus' guests, David Kniess (Veteran & Producer) and Lieutenant Colonel Trent Gibson (Dunham's Company Commander), not only bring Jason's story to life, but discuss the compelling and engaging upcoming documentary - The Gift. The Gift documentary is a personal project for David, who had a chance meeting with Corporal Dunham. That chance meeting led to lifelong friendships with the Dunham family and a core group of Marines from Kilo Company. David is actively involved in the Veteran community and has volunteered his time, producing content for Veteran Organizations such as Beteran, Stop Soldier Suicide, John Preston Music, and The Boot Campaign. David also served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Normandy (CG-60), a guided missile cruiser. In this episode you will hear: • Having the Dunham's in my life has enriched my life. (10:52) • It's not just about Jason; it's about everything that has affected all of you all those years. (15:46) • Our generation and the younger generation is standing up and saying, “I'm not gonna wait for anyone. I'm gonna jump out there and teach guys how to surf, how to sing with dogs, start a podcast, and we're talking about our shit. (22:44) • [With regard to this film], all I care about is what Marines, Sailors, Airmen and Soldiers think. For veterans who are still struggling, I want them to watch it and say “if these kid can do it, maybe I can do it too.” (26:44) • I want civilians to know what it's like for young men & women to go to war. (27:23) • [Marcus] If somebody threw one of those “Thank you for service” lines at you – even if you haven't done something – it's coming…” (28:04) • I believe in 3 things as a Marine. I believe in leadership by example; I believe in self-sacrifice for the greater good; and one man can make a difference. (33:06) • Jason had the leadership qualities to lead a rifle squad of American sons. (37:39) • Any leader who inspires his subordinates through personal example, to then return the favor and take care of him – that's a true leader. (47:06) • Dunham was a big boy. He's not someone I would choose to grapple with. (54:38) • Jason took off his Kevlar helmet, placed in on the grenade, and then laid down on it. (64:41) • Knowing what I know of him now, he loved his marines so much. He didn't just take care of them, he practiced taking care of them. Who fucking practices covering a live grenade with their helmet? There are 125 WWI recipients of the Medal of Honor. One of those recipients was Private Thomas Croft Neibaur of the 167th Infantry Regiment, 42nd “Rainbow” Division who received the award for heroism at the Cote de Chatillon in 1918. Neibaur was the first Mormon and the first soldier from Idaho to receive the Medal of Honor. His actions led General John J. Pershing to name him amongst the “Immortal Ten” of World War I, and yet, in a tragic turn of events, in 1939 Neibaur returned his Medal of Honor. To discuss Neibaur's WWI service and life, the World War I Podcast hosted Sherman Fleek, author of Place the Headstones Where They Belong: Thomas Neibaur, WWI Soldier. Drafted into the United States Army in 1968, Jim served as a combat medic with the Americal Division where he rose to the rank of Specialist Five. In one battle alone “Doc” McCloughan has been credited with moving into the “kill zone” on ten occasions, saving ten American lives and one Vietnamese interpreter's life. Specialist McCloughan was highly decorated receiving the Combat Medic Badge, two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars with “V” device for valor, The U. S. Army Valorous Unit Citation, The National Defense Medal, The Good Conduct Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal with three Battle Stars, The Vietnam Campaign Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palms and one Oak Leaf Cluster and the M16 Expert Rifle Badge. In 2017, Jim was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, our nation's highest military commendation.
On May 16, 1968, Navy Corpsman Donald “Doc” Ballard dove on a grenade thrown by a North Vietnam soldier in an attempt to save five United States Marines from death. Realizing the grenade failed to explode, Ballard quickly threw it out of harm's way just as it exploded thus saving the Marines and himself from harm or death. On May 14, 1970, he received the Medal of Honor from President Richard Nixon. On this week's special “Leaders and Legends” podcast, Doc details that day and describes how he's dedicated his life to helping his fellow veterans.Sponsors• Veteran Strategies• NFP - A leading insurance broker and consultant• Garmong Construction• Crowne Plaza Downtown Indianapolis Historic Union StationAbout Veteran Strategies‘Leaders and Legends' is brought to you by Veteran Strategies—your local veteran business enterprise specializing in media relations, crisis communications, public outreach, and digital photography. Send us a Text Message.Ever wondered what it takes to earn the Medal of Honor and navigate the complex world of Special Forces? This episode features an exclusive conversation with Earl Plumlee, a Green Beret whose journey from the National Guard to the Special Forces is nothing short of inspiring. Discover the profound impact of his military career, the trials and triumphs that shaped him, and the honor and weight of receiving one of the highest military accolades. Earl opens up about the challenges of transitioning between different military branches and the ongoing mission to adapt and overcome in the most demanding circumstances. Family plays a crucial role in the life of a Special Forces operator, a theme we explore deeply in this episode. Earl shares personal anecdotes underscoring the importance of involving spouses in career decisions to maintain strong family bonds. We also tackle the inherent difficulties of explaining the rewarding yet demanding military lifestyle to those outside the "warrior culture." Communication and mutual understanding emerge as key elements in sustaining familial support and happiness amid the rigorous demands of service. The episode takes a serious turn as we discuss the mental health impact of preventable battlefield deaths, particularly focusing on PTSD among soldiers and the heavy responsibilities shouldered by military leaders. From the mentorship of young non-commissioned officers to the unique patriotism of Green Berets, Earl reflects on the deep connections forged through service. Tibor Rubin's story continues. As a young man, Tibor joined the U.S. Army, and he was sent to fight during the Korean War, where he was captured and taken to a brutal prisoner of war camp. On multiple occasions, he saved many lives and acted with bravery to protect U.S. troops. His story is about more than courage and bravery. It's about compassion. And the truth that, sometimes, hope is the most powerful defense we have. Special thanks to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, the Buffalo Jewish Federation and the book "Single Handed: The Inspiring True Story of Tibor "Teddy" Rubin, Holocaust Survivor, Korean War Hero, and Medal of Honor Recipient". Stress is the great equalizer in leadership. When you're cold, you're wet, you're tired, your company's losing money, you have no revenue, you're pinned down by enemy fire, or you're down by five with two minutes left, great organizations need leaders who stand up, take charge, make decisions and act. America's Green Berets are the best in the world at leading under stress. To unpack just how we're selecting the next generation of Special Forces Operators, Fran Racioppi sat down with the team responsible for training them; LTC Dave Lucas and Medal of Honor Recipient Command Sergeant Major Matt Williams; the command team for 4th battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group, otherwise known as the MOS phase of the Qualification Course. From the JFK Special Warfare Museum at Fort Liberty's John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School they cover the Q-course; what it takes to be a successful Alpha, Bravo, Charlie or Echo; how they're upholding the standard and preparing the force for the peer-to-peer battlefield and the difference between motivation and leadership. Plus CSM Williams shares his account of the Battle of Shok Valley and why sometimes the greatest displays of leadership have nothing to do with rank, position, or tenure. Take a listen, watch, or read our conversation then head over to our YouTube channel to watch this episode and watch CSM Williams & LTC Lucas share the lineage of America's first Special Forces in the Jedburgh Media Channel's first documentary, Unknown Heroes, Behind Enemy Lines at D-Day, the story of Operation Jedburgh. In today's episode of The Bearded Monkey Podcast, I read excerpts from the book, Alone At Dawn, which was written by Dan Schilling and Lori Chapman Longfritz. There is no way I can pay the respect due to John Chapman, who was killed in action, in 2002, in the mountains of Afghanistan. John was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2018, 16 years after his death. I have always been inspired by this story and a 60 minute episode does him no justice. I would encourage any of the listeners of the show to read this book, because it will leave you inspired. As always, if you like the show, share the show with someone you think might also enjoy it. On this episode of Our American Stories, the Navy commissioned a destroyer on April 1, 2017, and named it after a man who deliberately crash-landed a perfectly good aircraft behind enemy lines. But the man who became the first American serviceman in the Korean War to receive the Medal of Honor—and the man who lent his name to the USS Thomas Hudner had a darn good reason, perhaps the best of reasons. This episode is kind of a “betweener”— part Normal Folks and part our special series Supporting Greatness. It may seem like a stretch to call a Medal of Honor recipient normal, but he wasn't some big wig general, literally went house to house clearing insurgents in Iraq, and it's not like he campaigned for the medal. But we definitely wanted to interview David about who's supported him and he powerfully talks about his grandfather, his dad, the men he served with in the “Ramrods”, and a Gold Star mom.
