Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 13, 2025 is: curfew KER-fyoo noun Curfew refers to a law or order that requires people to be indoors after a certain time at night, as well as to the period of time when such an order or law is in effect. Chiefly in the United States, curfew is also used to refer to the time set by a parent or caregiver at which a child has to be back home after going out. // No one is allowed on the streets during the curfew. // Lana has a 10 o'clock curfew, so we need to bring her home right after the movie. See the entry > Examples: “[Lew] Alcindor narrowed his college choice to Michigan, Columbia, St. John's, and UCLA. He liked Columbia as the chance to attend school walking distance to Harlem and a subway ride to the jazz clubs he had to leave early as a high schooler to make curfew.” — Scott Howard-Cooper, Kingdom on Fire: Kareem, Wooden, Walton, and the Turbulent Days of the UCLA Basketball Dynasty, 2024 Did you know? Curfews set by parents (and kept or broken by their offspring) do not echo the origins of the word curfew in any discernable way—if they did, they'd need to at least hint at the sound of a bell. When curfew was first used in the 14th century, it referred to the sounding of a bell at evening to alert people that they should cover their hearth fires for the night—a necessary warning, as many European houses in the Middle Ages were close enough to each other that fires could spread easily from one to the next. The word came to English from Anglo-French, in which the signal was called coverfeu, a compound of covrir, meaning “to cover,” and feu, “fire.” Even when hearth fires were no longer regulated, many towns had other rules that called for ringing an evening bell, including one that required people to be off the streets by a given time, a development that granted curfew permission to go out and about with a broader meaning.

Ira On Sports - Scott Howard Cooper 060324 by Ira On Sports
In the tradition of Blood in the Garden and Three Ring Circus, Kingdom on Fire presents a bold narrative history of the iconic UCLA Bruins championship teams led by legendary coach John Wooden. This incredible true story about the messy, never-easy pursuit of perfection led by Wooden is not your typical sports book: Kingdom on Fire is the story of a team and a time, placing an unprecedented seven title winning streak against a fractured America of the 1960s and 70s. Los Angeles native and longtime sportswriter for the Los Angeles Times, Scott Howard Cooper draws on more than 100 interviews and access to many of the principal figures--Bill Walton, Wooden's family, and Jerry West among other key sources—to deliver a rich narrative that reveals the turmoil at the heart of this storied college basketball program. Scott Howard-Cooper has covered professional and college sports since the 1980s for some of the most prominent outlets in the country, including the Los Angeles Times, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, and more. His work has earned multiple national awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors and the Professional Basketball Writers Association for projects, game coverage, features, and columns. He graduated from USC with a degree in political science and lives in northern California. For more info on the book click HERE
00:00-30:00: Kingdom on Fire author Scott Howard-Cooper joins the show. Book review from Amazon on Kareem-Wooden-Walton-more: Few basketball dynasties have reigned supreme like the UCLA Bruins did over college basketball from 1965–1975 (seven consecutive titles, three perfect records, an eighty-eight-game winning streak that remains unmatched). At the center of this legendary franchise were the now-iconic players Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Bill Walton, naturally reserved personalities who became outspoken giants when it came to race and the Vietnam War. These generational talents were led by John Wooden, a conservative counterweight to his star players whose leadership skills would transcend the game after his retirement. But before the three of them became history, they would have to make it—together. Los Angeles native and longtime sportswriter for the Los Angeles Times, Scott Howard Cooper draws on more than a hundred interviews and extensive access to many of the principal figures, including Wooden's family to deliver a rich narrative that reveals the turmoil at the heart of this storied college basketball program. Making the eye-opening connections between UCLA and the Nixon administration, Ronald Reagan, Muhammad Ali, and others, Kingdom on Fire puts the UCLA basketball team's political involvement and influence in full relief for the first time. The story of UCLA basketball is an incredible slice of American history that reveals what it truly takes to achieve and sustain greatness while standing up for what you believe in.

Steve interviews Jeff Passan (00:07:20) from ESPN. Jeff is driving from one spring training location to another and has plenty of time to chat with Steve about their long history, going to the Super Bowl, nonsense, and of course, baseball. Jeff talks about going to the Super Bowl with his son, explains how being Jeff Passan was crucial to the experience, and details the drama of the final seconds of overtime. Jeff also talks about the Atlanta Braves, the current playoff format, Shohei Ohtani, and looks ahead to the 2024 Major League Baseball season. Also, Scott Howard-Cooper debuts (01:03:12) to preview his book about the great UCLA basketball teams of the 1960's and 70's. Scott explains how a USC alum came to write a book about UCLA. Scott also explains how he combines history, politics, and sports without the book never really being about any of those things. Scott talks about Coach Wooden, Kareem, Walton and explains why each character was vital to the success of UCLA basketball. Steve starts the show with First Things First and explains how a mistake by his wife nearly led him to missing his chance to have Jeff Passan on the show. The book club has a new book to announce. The show ends with one last thing about Patrick Kane and his return to Chicago. For more information follow the podcast on twitter @sports_casters Email: thesportscasters@gmail.com

My Summer Lair host Sammy Younan interviews NBA journalist Scott Howard-Cooper whose latest profile is Steve Kerr: A Life. His outstanding NBA biography on the Warriors coach Steve Kerr. My Summer Lair Chapter #206: Are You Grateful for Steve Kerr? Recorded: Tuesday, November 9, 2021 1:00 PM (EST
Steve Kerr is expected to soon be named the USA Basketball head coach to succeed Gregg Popovich, but Kerr's journey to this place is unlike any other. Kerr was barely recruited out of high school as a player, ended up becoming a legend at Arizona under Lute Olsen, and went from being a second-round NBA pick to 15 years in the league, five rings, and a black eye from a punch from Michael Jordan. Kerr's life was not easy — his father was assassinated by terrorists in the Middle East while he was in college — but he also has had some breaks, then took full advantage of them. In this latest PBT Podcast, we talk about all of that with Scott Howard Cooper, the man who literally wrote the book on Kerr, which is available now, Steve Kerr: A Life.

Scott Howard-Cooper has covered professional and college sports since the 1980s for some of the most prominent outlets in the country, including the Los Angeles Times, ESPN.com, NBA.com and NBA TV, SportsIllustrated.com and the Sacramento Bee, among others. On Wednesday he joined The Big Show to discuss the NBA Finals as well as his new book, Steve Kerr: A Life. •The shot to beat the Jazz in Game 6 in 1997 is everything in the big picture of Kerr's career. I cover it in depth in the book with new context. In a life of terrible moments turning into some of his best — blowing out his knee at Arizona, a practice fight with Michael Jordan, a terrible few months with the Magic that had him considering retirement — nothing tops going from a terrible Finals to the best moment of his playing career. It was the intersection of his life. John Stockton on the court as an opponent after Stockton ruined Kerr's chances of a Gonzaga scholarship years before, Jeff Hornacek on the court after Kerr had spent years pretending to be Hornacek as part of a practice routine, Jud Buechler there as a connection to Kerr's beloved Arizona days, Phil Jackson and Jordan as signs of how far Kerr had come to be in that situation at all. Hornacek was a fun interview on that moment. Kerr always believed that basket set up the rest of his life, that it made him enough of a name for TNT to later want to hire Kerr as a commentator and that being hired as a commentator gave him the visibility to remain a candidate for future jobs as a coach or GM. I think he's wrong, but that's what he believes. •Kerr's name came up at the highest levels of government and in the strangest of roles: emissary to North Korea. An advisor recommended Kerr for the job to President Obama during a meeting at the White House as Obama sought ways to connect with new North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Blood drained from the faces of members of the National Security Council in the meeting and the suggestion didn't gain traction. •Without anyone beyond his inner-circle being aware, Kerr considered quitting his dream job as coach of the Warriors because of ongoing health issues in 2016. The pain, dizziness and exhaustion from spinal fluid that leaked into his system was that bad. Few realized Golden State almost had to find a replacement. •The Kerr family sued Iran — and won — near the end of his playing career. Steve was not in favor of the idea, but joined the action to support the family members who were, and missed two games with the Spurs to testify in Washington. Details of Kerr on the witness stand had never been reported before. •The deal Phoenix General Manager Steve Kerr thought he had in 2009 to acquire Stephen Curry in the draft, a great disappointment at the time, turned out to be one of the best things to happen to him. Coach Steve Kerr won three titles at Golden State with the same Stephen Curry as his star player. •None of this was ever supposed to happen. His parents were never supposed to meet, he is the first to say he had no business playing at a Pac-10 school like Arizona, on his most optimistic days he thought he could last a season or two in the NBA as a player, and he shouldn't have become the Warriors coach. Strange path. Fascinating life.

Was it a clunker? There was a lot of hype and anticipation heading into the 2016 NBA Draft for the Boston Celtics, but universal sentiment has everyone from fans, media and possibly those within the organization far from enamored about the night the Celtics had back on Thursday evening. Sure they didn't make a big move, but what about the rest of the night? Did anything go right? Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com and NBAtv will check into Celtics Beat first to give a rundown on the six selections the Celts utilized. Let's cut right to the chase: What can Jaylen Brown do? Does he seriously have the highest bust potential of all the top players? How fearful should people be of his lack of production at Cal? Is he even better to last year's top target, Justise Winslow? And what about the other players, including the three second round selections? What are their strengths and do any of them have futures in the NBA? That's not all there. There was plenty of fallout from the NBA Draft. Where does Thursday leave the Celtics? Did it set back the team in any capacity? Why aren't teams biting on Boston's supposedly loaded warchest? Are teams completely afraid of trading with Danny Ainge? Ben Golliver of Sports Illustrated offers his views and more on what was a highly talked-about day in the national circles regarding what Boston did and did not do on Draft Night. It's all on this week's edition of Celtics Beat. Brought to you by Blue Apron, audiblepodcast.com/celtics, Casper, and American Farmer's Network.
