Why Follow-Up Is a Leadership Practice with Doug C. Brown Let's face it—“follow-up” doesn't always have the best reputation. It can feel pushy, annoying, or just like one more thing on your to-do list. But what if follow-up wasn't about pestering people… and instead became one of the most powerful tools you have to show care, build trust, and lead with integrity? In this episode, Dr. Mike Patterson sits down with renowned sales expert Doug C. Brown to reframe everything you think you know about follow-up. Doug shares why this essential practice is about more than just closing a deal—it's about strengthening relationships, delivering value, and showing others that they matter. About the Episode: Doug C. Brown, CEO of CEO Sales Strategies, brings over 40 years of sales leadership to the table. He's worked with brands like Tony Robbins, CBS, and Procter & Gamble, built 35 businesses, and helped generate over $900 million in sales. But at the heart of his success is a simple principle: effective, personalized follow-up builds relationships—and relationships drive results. In this conversation, Doug explains why follow-up should be part of every leader's toolkit. Whether you're managing a team, building a business, or simply aiming to serve others better, consistent and thoughtful follow-up creates connection, increases retention, and unlocks new opportunities. You'll hear real-world stories about how follow-up has led to massive referrals, strengthened loyalty, and even closed six-figure deals. Doug also shares how poor follow-up costs companies thousands (if not millions) and reveals how you can avoid those losses with just a few intentional habits. Key Takeaways: Follow-Up = Leadership: It's not about pestering—it's about showing respect, accountability, and care. ABR: Always Be Building Relationships: Forget the old ABCs of sales—lasting relationships are what lead to lasting results. Why People Don't Buy Immediately: Emotional, logistical, and trust-related factors often delay purchases—follow-up bridges the gap. Multimodal Matters: Effective follow-up isn't just about phone calls—it's texts, emails, handwritten notes, and more. Three-a-Day Rule: Want to change your business? Follow up with just three people a day. That's 1,000+ meaningful connections a year. Whether you're a business leader, a coach, or a team builder—this episode will challenge you to rethink how you engage the people around you. If you want to build stronger relationships, increase trust, and lead with more integrity, it starts with simple, consistent follow-up. Hit play now to learn how to put Doug's “3-a-day” method into practice and start seeing results in your business and your life. Today, I sit down with Tom McMillan and discuss his most recent book: The Year That Made America: From Rebellion to Independence, 1775-1776.This gripping account reveals the precarious path to American independence through a series of pivotal dates that history has nearly forgotten. While July 4th claims the glory, the actual vote for independence came on July 2nd—and even that historic moment almost didn't happen. From January's publication of Common Sense to December's darkest hours of the Revolution, McMillan reconstructs the dramatic months when rebellious colonies transformed into a new nation.Through meticulous research and compelling storytelling, the book reveals:How the pivotal events of May 15, June 7, and July 2 shaped America's destinyWhy Congress's bold January declaration triggered a chain of unstoppable eventsThe behind-the-scenes feud between Adams and Jefferson on their views of government after independence was wonHow the Declaration's influence extended from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address to modern timesThis timely narrative strips away the myths to expose the raw political courage that launched a revolution. From heated Congressional debates to the dangerous aftermath of declaring independence, McMillan delivers a fresh perspective on America's founding that resonates powerfully with today's political challenges.Buy The Book

"Stop Saying You're Fine" is a self-help book by Mel Robbins, published in 2011. The book empowers readers to take action and make positive life changes.Buy The Book on Amazon https://geni.us/ZjbIGet the summary via Blinkist https://blinkist.o6eiov.net/q4y4rLBecome a Moonshot Member https://www.patreon.com/MoonshotsWatch this episode on YouTube https://youtu.be/36UFNDfCruwHere is a summary of the key points:1. The Power of Complacency: Mel Robbins addresses the common habit of telling ourselves and others that we're "fine" even when we're not genuinely content or fulfilled. She argues that this complacency prevents us from recognizing and addressing the issues holding us back from achieving our goals and happiness.2. The Five-Second Rule: One of the book's central concepts is the "Five-Second Rule." This rule suggests that when you feel an impulse to act on something that could positively impact your life (e.g., starting a new project, speaking up in a meeting, working out), you have just five seconds to take action before your mind talks you out. Counting down from five and taking immediate action can break the inertia and build momentum toward positive change.3. Overcoming Fear and Anxiety: Robbins addresses fear and anxiety's role in keeping us in our comfort zones. She provides strategies for overcoming these emotions and reframing them as natural responses to new challenges. Understanding that fear is necessary for growth allows readers to embrace discomfort and move forward.4. Identifying Goals and Priorities: The book encourages readers to identify their desires and priorities. Through introspection and self-assessment, Robbins helps readers understand what they want to achieve personally and professionally.5. The Importance of Action: Mel Robbins emphasizes the significance of consistent action towards our goals. She warns against waiting for motivation to strike and instead suggests adopting a proactive mindset to achieve lasting success.6. Building Confidence and Resilience: Robbins discusses how taking small steps and celebrating minor victories can help build confidence and resilience. Individuals can maintain their motivation and drive towards more significant achievements by recognizing and celebrating progress.7. Accountability and Support: The book emphasizes the importance of accountability and having a support system to stay on track with personal growth and change. Robbins suggests seeking like-minded individuals or mentors who can offer guidance and encouragement.Buy The Book on Amazon https://geni.us/ZjbIGet the summary via Blinkist https://blinkist.o6eiov.net/q4y4rLBecome a Moonshot Member https://www.patreon.com/MoonshotsWatch this episode on YouTube https://youtu.be/36UFNDfCruwOverall, "Stop Saying You're Fine" is a practical guide to breaking free from complacency, embracing fear, and taking charge of one's life to create meaningful and fulfilling experiences. In recent years, from school board meetings to the halls of Congress, Americans have engaged in fierce debates about how slavery and its legacies ought to be taught, researched, and narrated. But since the earliest days of the Republic, political leaders, abolitionists, judges, scholars, and ordinary citizens have all struggled to explain and understand the peculiar institution. In Making Sense of Slavery, historian Scott Spillman shows that the study of slavery was a vital catalyst for the broader development of American intellectual life and politics. In contexts ranging from the plantation fields to the university classroom, Americans interpreted slavery and its afterlives through many lenses, shaping the trajectory of disciplines from economics to sociology, from psychology to history. Spillman delves deeply into the archives, and into the pathbreaking work of scholars such as W. E. B. Du Bois and Annette Gordon-Reed, to trace how generations of Americans have wrestled with the paradox of slavery in a country founded on principles of liberty and equality. As the debate over the place of slavery in our history rages on, Making Sense of Slavery shows that what is truly central to American history is this very debate itself. BUY THE BOOK

We've all heard Peter Drucker's famous quote, "Culture eats strategy for breakfast." But what does it really take to build a workplace culture that drives both people and performance? In this episode of Mission First People Always, Dr. Mike Patterson sits down with culture expert Andrea Wanerstrand to uncover the key elements of creating a thriving, human-centric workplace. Dr. Mike welcomes Andrea Wanerstrand, Founder & CEO of A3 CultureLab, a leadership speaker, coach, and consultant who helps organizations—from startups to Fortune 500 companies—design extraordinary workplace cultures. With a background in global performance management at companies like Microsoft and T-Mobile, Andrea shares insights on fostering a workplace where people feel valued, autonomous, and accountable. Andrea breaks down what it means to have a human-centric workplace, emphasizing the importance of how work gets done, how leaders make others feel, and how trust is built. She explains that culture isn't just about perks or policies—it's about how people interact, communicate, and show up every day. Throughout the conversation, Andrea offers practical advice for leaders, including how to balance empathy with authority, create autonomous teams, and encourage a culture of accountability without fear. She also shares details about her upcoming coaching program, Mindset Maven, designed to help high-achievers develop mental and physical resilience. Key Takeaways: Culture is about the "how," not just the "what"—how work is done, how people feel, and how trust is built. Human-centric leadership requires balancing empathy with authority to foster both people and performance. Autonomous teams thrive on accountability—leaders must set expectations, provide trust, and encourage transparency. Accountability isn't a bad word—it's about taking ownership, getting credit for success, and learning from setbacks. Your energy affects your leadership—Andrea recommends an energy audit to identify when you're at your best and schedule key conversations accordingly. Andrea Wanerstrand's insights remind us that leadership is about creating environments where people can thrive. Whether you're a new manager or a seasoned executive, understanding and shaping culture is key to long-term success. For millennia, land has been a symbol of wealth and privilege. But the true power of land ownership is even greater than we might think. In Land Power, political scientist Michael Albertus shows that who owns the land determines whether a society will be equal or unequal, whether it will develop or decline, and whether it will safeguard or sacrifice its environment. Modern history has been defined by land reallocation on a massive scale. From the 1500s on, European colonial powers and new nation-states shifted indigenous lands into the hands of settlers. The 1900s brought new waves of land appropriation, from Soviet and Maoist collectivization to initiatives turning large estates over to family farmers. The shuffle continues today as governments vie for power and prosperity by choosing who should get land. Drawing on a career's worth of original research and on-the-ground fieldwork, Albertus shows that choices about who owns the land have locked in poverty, sexism, racism, and climate crisis—and that what we do with the land today can change our collective fate. Global in scope, Land Power argues that saving civilization must begin with the earth under our feet.Buy The Book

Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 shocked the world. And yet, to Ukrainians, this attack was painfully familiar, the latest episode in a centuries-long Russian campaign to divide and oppress Ukraine. In Intent to Destroy, political scientist Eugene Finkel uncovers these deep roots of the Russo-Ukrainian War. Ukraine is a key borderland between Russia and the West, and, following the rise of Russian nationalism in the nineteenth century, dominating Ukraine became the cornerstone of Russian policy. Russia has long used genocidal tactics—killings, deportations, starvation, and cultural destruction—to successfully crush Ukrainian efforts to chart an independent path. As Finkel shows, today's violence is simply a more extreme version of the Kremlin's long-standing policy. But unlike in the past, the people of Ukraine—motivated by the rise of democracy in their nation—have overcome their deep internal divisions. For the first time, they have united in favor of independence from Russia. Whatever the outcome of the present war, Ukraine's staunch resistance has permanently altered its relationship to Russia and the West. Intent to Destroy offers the vital context we need to truly understand Europe's bloodiest conflict since World War II.BUY THE BOOK

What do leadership and ballet have in common? More than you might think! In this inspiring episode of Mission First People Always, Dr. Mike Patterson speaks with Ahli Moore about the surprising connections between ballet and leadership, uncovering how the discipline, practice, and passion behind the art of dance can guide leaders to be more effective and impactful. Dr. Mike welcomes Ahli Moore, founder of X-Factor Solutions, a consulting firm dedicated to leadership development and organizational transformation. Drawing on his unique perspective as a business leader and his connection to the ballet world through his wife, a professional choreographer and former ballerina, Ahli shares how foundational principles of ballet mirror essential leadership practices. Ahli discusses the importance of passion and purpose in leadership, drawing parallels with the early dedication of ballet dancers. He highlights how practice, preparation, and consistency are vital for both dancers and leaders, emphasizing that great performances—on stage or in the boardroom—are the result of relentless preparation. Ahli also introduces the concept of core positions in ballet, which serve as a foundation for all movements, and relates this to defining and mastering core leadership skills. He explores how adaptability and the ability to pivot in challenging situations can make leaders more resilient and effective. Finally, Ahli dives into the importance of receiving feedback, or “post-performance notes,” as an ongoing practice for growth and excellence. Leaders, like dancers, must embrace continuous improvement to stay at the top of their game. Key Takeaways: Passion and Purpose: Leaders, like dancers, need to continuously assess their passion for their work and ensure their purpose aligns with their goals. Practice and Preparation: Excellence doesn't happen overnight—it's the result of consistent effort and refinement. Core Positions: Identify and master the foundational skills that everything else builds upon. The Power of Pivoting: Adaptability is key, but always stay anchored to your core values. Feedback for Growth: Welcome constructive criticism as a tool for improvement, and incorporate it into your daily practices. Ahli Moore's insights remind us that great leadership is an art form, requiring passion, discipline, and continuous improvement. Whether you're leading a team or striving for personal excellence, these lessons from the ballet world can guide you to greater success.
