What are we pursuing? What are we after? Would your answer to this question match the answer of your spouse or your children? The world prioritizes wealth, power, and fame. The Declaration of Independence states that all men are created equal and are entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Often, we twist that last part to mean that we can do what makes us happy. To the founding fathers who penned those words, happiness was family, opportunity, and freedom to govern themselves in a way that had not been known under colonial rule. If we pursue happiness in the way the world defines it, we are governed by emotions that will eventually disappoint and leave us wanting. The things the world defines as happiness are temporal. We award trophies for accomplishments. Sports, The Art, cook-offs, and many other activities present awards, certificates, plaques, and trophies for being the best or coming in first in a competition. Awards are fine, and the temporary recognition for an accomplishment is nice, but if that becomes the goal in life, what have we accomplished? If you win the county fair apple pie contest, you have the blue ribbon to commemorate that, but what will that mean many years later? The blue ribbon mattered in the moment, but over time, that will be forgotten, and someone else will win the prize. Trophies do not last forever. We must chase after things that are worth it. Some will ask, "Don't I deserve to be happy? Can't I pursue winning the prize?" Sure, you can, but at what cost? The Bible has many stories of people who pursued what made them happy, but at a high price: Eve, Lot, Saul, David, Esau, and Judas all traded much for a very temporary reward. Our text asks, "What does it profit a man to win if it costs him his soul?" If we win awards, but neglect Jesus, it is all for naught. Trophies are temporal, but crowns are eternal. Trophies represent moments, but crowns represent a lifetime.

We all want stuff. Then we want more stuff. When we get too much stuff, we get a storage unit…..to store our stuff. There is a thing called retail therapy. It is the feeling we get when we initially purchase something that we want to make us happy. The brain releases dopamine, a chemical in the brain linked to pleasure and reward. But it wears off. It doesn’t last.

This is the first in a three part series on Spiritual Estate Planning. If I haven’t lost you yet, I will be going through three aspects of earthly estate planning and showing how they relate to spiritual estate planning. This series can set you up for life in how you work with God, your estate advisor and reach goals that are out of this world. Investments, Insurance and Inheritance are the three areas that will be examined. First Investments. Caution, Crypto Ahead. The first part of the series is on investing. In 2022, a crypto currency exchange, FTX filed for bankruptcy. According to Fortune.com, FTX had 60 billion dollars and lost 51 billion. The day before the bankruptcy filing, FTX allowed 1500 people in the Bahamas to withdraw approximately 100 million according to MSNBC. I bet you couldn’t even think of having 51 billion dollars, much less losing it. The scriptures do not teach against being rich or investing, but they are clear on where we are to store or build wealth primarily.

Jesus makes a very strong, but important, point in this text. Those whose hearts are focused on submission to God's rule will gain riches in heave, the riches of HIS kingdom. Those whose hearts are focus on their own wealth, status, and possessions will gain the failed treasure of this world ... and nothing more. One's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.
God wants to lead us to discover real treasure as we move financially from struggling, to stable, to surrender, to sacrifice.

Why give to the church – not only our time, but a considered, thoughtful percentage of our income as well? Why give our money – as well as our time – to the church? Rev. Dr. Larry Hayward preaches from Matthew 6:19-21.

AM Sermon
12/04/2016 Sunday Sermon
Over the last few months, farmers have been harvesting the fields that were planted this past spring and summer. The fields near our house in Whorton Bend were planted with corn and cotton. The past few weeks, huge combines have been going through the fields scooping up thousands and thousands of ears of corn. Even after dark, bright lights mounted on the tractors and combines keep the process going into the night. I pulled over one night just to watch. Way deep in the field the lights from the combines looked like an eerie scene from an otherworldly SYFY movie. Truck load after truck load of corn and cotton have been produced from that which was planted only a few months earlier. What have you planted in the fields of your life? What kind of harvest and produce come from your walk with Jesus? Over the next few weeks our church will be emphasizing the planting of our service, time, money, talents, obedience, witness, etc. The Bible challenges us to consider the harvest that is produced in our lives. The Bible challenges us to invest and store up treasures in heaven. 2 Corinthians 9:10-12 (NIV) “10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” Matthew 6:19-21 (NKJV) 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust (vermin – rats) destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Giving guides and gaurds our hearts and allows us to serve with excellence and expansion.
Without a heart a person cannot live. If a person's heart gets unhealthy, it affects the quality of life. In the same way the heart of the soul determines what kind of life we will live. The heart is often associated with as the seat of our emotions, thoughts and soul. God tells us to guard our heart because it determines the course of our life (Prov 4:23).
Pastor Mike presents a review of our Mission Statement. It's important to know one's destination in life so that you know when you get there and also to have a measuring stones along the way to monitor progress. Today's message is a good discussion of what it means to be "Heavenly Effective thru Earthly Relevance". We are all encouraged to set Heaven as our destination and then work backwards to be sure that we arrive there with many eternal rewards already laid up. We're instructed to do just that and when we do, we find life so much more meaningful even in the temporary pleasures God gives...
