On June 7th, Scott Grossenbacher preached from Jonah 1:6-10 in the fourth message of our series through the book of Jonah.
Unfortunately, the American church is full of people who wear the mask of hypocrisy. And it's not just sexual sin. Many “deeds of the flesh” are indulged in, like anger, envy, gossip, and greed. But you would never know it because many who sit in churches every Sunday have learned to play the Christian part so well, it's hard to know what's true or what's just an act. Vinny Pappas joins the podcast to share how the Lord exposed the hypocrisy in his life, and how that was crucial in leading him out of sexual sin. 05/17/2026 Strong and Courageous | Hidden SinJoshua 7BIG IDEA: You cannot walk in victory publicly, while hiding disobedience privately.Hidden sin can make you look healthy on the outside, while quietly destroying you on the inside. It's hidden, so it's harmless. Some insights about hidden sin:1. Hidden sin never stays hidden. Sometimes, the greatest threat isn't the pressure around you; it's the sin you're hiding within you. What have you convinced yourself is “private” that is actually affecting everything around you?2. God brings hidden sin into the light so that he can bring healing into your life. The problem isn't God's faithlessness, it's the hidden compromises that we keep making, thinking that if no one else knows, it's ok. What are you protecting that God is trying to heal?3. Sin loses its power when it's brought into the light. What stays hidden within us cannot be healed. What are you still hiding that needs to be brought into the light?4. Repentance restores what sin destroys. What would God heal and restore if you stopped hiding it and instead surrendered it?Dealing with sin:1. Stop minimizing it.2. Confess it to God. (Psalm 32:3a, 5)3. Bring it into trusted community. (James 5:16a)4. Remove what fuels it. (Matthew 5:29-30)5. Build ongoing accountability. (Galatians 16:2)

In this message, Pastor Karl digs into the third and fourth parables of Matthew 13 — the Mustard Seed and the Leaven — and recovers an interpretation that the earliest church held for the first three centuries: these are not simply triumphant stories of kingdom growth, but diagnostic warnings about corruption quietly taking root within it.Using the memorable image of an unnaturally oversized Chihuahua, Pastor Karl challenges the assumption that bigger always means better — in culture, in church, and in personal faith. Just because something grows doesn't mean it's healthy. God designs everything with a DNA, and when growth outpaces its intended nature, something has gone wrong. From the Mustard Seed, the lesson is clear: a church that softens or reshapes Scripture to fit cultural comfort is one where corruption has found a home. Health — not size — is the measure that matters. From the Leaven, the warning cuts even deeper: what is hidden eventually spreads, and what spreads eventually shapes. Compromise never announces itself. It blends in, seeps slowly, and before long, convictions weaken, hunger for God fades, and obedience stalls.Pastor Karl closes with a pointed and personal call: audit your inputs, don't outgrow your obedience, and do serious business with the leaven you've allowed to stay too long.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm
Pride quietly distorts how we see ourselves, others, and God—but Philippians 2 reveals a better way. In this message, discover four mindset shifts—embracing your identity, pursuing unity, elevating others, and following Jesus Christ—to kill pride before it kills you.
What if the thing you most want to hide… is the very thing keeping you stuck? In today's teaching, we explore the powerful (and often avoided) spiritual practice of confession—the act of telling the truth about your life to God and to a trusted person. It may feel uncomfortable, even painful, but it might also be the key to real freedom.Drawing from Scripture, the wisdom of Dallas Willard, and insights from recovery communities like AA, this message shows how confession breaks the cycle of shame, removes hidden burdens, and restores connection with God and others.Because healing begins the moment you stop pretending.Welcome home. Change starts today.

What's your secret stash? Joshua 7 reveals how hidden sin can quietly sabotage your spiritual breakthrough. But this isn't a message about guilt — it's about grace. Discover how confession breaks chains, restores spiritual power, and opens the door to real freedom in Christ.
"But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against the children of Israel. And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai. And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few. So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai. And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water. And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the Lord until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads. And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord God, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan! O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies! For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name? And the Lord said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face? Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff. Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you. Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you. In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the Lord taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the Lord shall take shall come by households; and the household which the Lord shall take shall come man by man. And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel. So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken: And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken: And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LordGod of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me. And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done: When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it." Joshua 7:1-21

The post The Hidden Sin of Jealousy and Envy: Why It Destroys the Heart appeared first on Straight Truth Podcast.
Jealousy and envy are not minor flaws but destructive sins that spring from unbelief, discontentment, and idolatry. In this episode, Dr. Richard Caldwell explains how these heart issues reveal a lack of trust in God's sovereignty and corrupt both worship and relationships. Scripture calls believers to walk by the Spirit, putting away envy and cultivating love, gratitude, and contentment in Christ. True freedom is found when the heart rejoices in God's wisdom, rests in His providence, and treasures Christ above all else.

The story of Achan in Joshua 7 reveals how one person's hidden sin affected an entire community and teaches us that while we can commit sin, we can never contain its consequences.• One person's disobedience caused defeat for Israel at Ai and the death of 36 soldiers• The Valley of Achor (meaning "trouble") shows the severity of sin's consequences• We often misdiagnose difficulties in our lives instead of examining hidden sin• Joshua's response of tearing his clothes and falling to the ground in repentance• God's surprising command to "get up" and address the real problem• The process of revealing Achan's sin among two million people demonstrates God's sovereignty• Nothing hidden will remain hidden - God already knows the sin no one else sees• When we sin, other people must clean up our messes and face consequences• The Valley of Trouble (Achor) later becomes a "gateway of hope" through God's grace• We cannot fully comprehend our sin's severity or the sufficiency of God's grace Run to repentance. Don't walk to find it. For your own sake as well as for the sake of the people around you. After the miraculous victory at Jericho, Israel's joy is quickly shattered by unexpected defeat at Ai. The reason? Hidden sin in the camp. In Joshua 7, we are reminded that sin is never small, never private, and never without consequence. What Achan tried to bury beneath his tent was ultimately exposed by God—and it brought trouble on the entire nation. In this message, we'll see the seriousness of sin, the danger of concealing it, and the hope we find when we confess and trust the God who is enough.
This week Pastor Brandon continues our Break Free series by tackling one of the most destructive strongholds—hidden sin. Through the story of Achan in Joshua 7, we see how sin that is kept secret not only destroys us from the inside out, but also impacts those around us. Hidden sin multiplies, it robs us of peace, and it eventually always comes to light. But the good news is that God has given us a way to break free through confession, repentance, and accountability. Pastor Brandon reminds us that what is uncovered and surrendered to Jesus becomes an opportunity for His grace to be unleashed in our lives. This message is both convicting and full of hope, pointing us to the freedom that only Christ can bring.
What happens when hidden sin disrupts our lives, and how does God respond? In this message, Pastor Harrison Conley teaches from Joshua 7 and 8, showing how private compromise can bring public consequences, but also how confession and repentance open the way for hope, restoration, and a second chance. Be encouraged that no failure is final when you turn back to God.
Introduction The message focuses on hidden sin and the importance of dealing with it. Uses the analogy of a piece of masking tape in the sanctuary to illustrate how sin can be small, concealed, left behind, and yet still significant to God. References Psalms 69:5, James 2:10, and 1 John 1:8-9 to emphasize the omnipresence of God's knowledge of sin and the need for confession and repentance. The Futility of Hiding Sin Human nature compels people to hide things from God, but it is impossible. God knows everything, including unspoken thoughts and the contents of the heart. God knows what has been overlooked, swept under the rug, or neglected. The Masking Tape Analogy A piece of masking tape in the sanctuary serves as an analogy for hidden sin. The tape is small, and people often convince themselves that small sins don't matter. Examples: responses in prayer, reactions to others, thoughts. The tape is in plain sight, yet unnoticed by most. Illustrates how sin can be present but ignored. The Significance of "Small" Sins According to James 2:10, offending in one point of the law makes one guilty of all. Anything not of faith is sin. Sin separates individuals from fellowship and communion with God. Assigning a size to sin based on comparison to others is flawed. God did not excuse sin at Calvary but paid for it through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Buford's Wisdom Recollection of a conversation with Buford, who expressed that if he could do it all over again, he would preach harder on sin. People allow sin to linger in their hearts. God is holy and calls people to be holy. There is no excuse for undealt with sin. The Nature of Sin Sin is a violation of God's holiness. If God gave an inch for any sin, it would open the door to all sin. All sin was condemned in the flesh when Jesus was nailed to the cross. Even seemingly small sins were significant enough for Jesus to bear the punishment. Concealed Sin The masking tape is partially out of view, in a place where people don't typically look. Sin may seem concealed, but it is not hidden from God. God will expose sin at some point. Sin is "Left Behind" The masking tape was left behind, implying someone was involved with it and had a purpose for it. Sin is not someone else's fault; individuals are responsible for their own sin. People often repent of the symptoms of sin but leave behind the root cause, such as a broken heart, malice, jealousy, or a wrong attitude. God wants to deal with what has been left behind. Sin is in Clear View to God The masking tape is in clear view, but most people haven't noticed it. The devil wants people to forget about their sin, but God doesn't work that way. If something was sin then, it is still sin. 1 John 1:9 states that if people confess their sins, God is faithful to forgive them. The Importance of Confession Confessing sin is key to dealing with it. Sin impairs worship and hinders fellowship with God. There is nothing more important than fellowship with Christ. Individuals should ask God to search them and reveal any wicked ways. God will make sin apparent, providing an opportunity to turn away from it. There should be no shame in seeking God's help with sin. Evidence of Sin The masking tape had evidence of where it had been, including a hair and carpet fiber. Sin leaves marks and bears evidence of what is still in the flesh. The heart is extremely wicked and cannot be trusted. Sin Sticks Sin sticks and hangs on until it is dealt with. Dealing with sin requires honesty, guilt acknowledgement, repentance, and turning away from it. God casts forgiven sin as far as the east is from the west. Sin is Near the Altar The masking tape was near the altar. Sin has always been near the altar. God can deal with whatever has been said about sin. Conclusion

The story reveals deeper complexities than typically discussed, showing how a powerful king compartmentalized his life while covering up serious sin until confronted by Nathan the prophet. This episode offers profound insight for anyone struggling with hidden sin or its aftermath. While forgiveness is complete and unconditional, consequences often remain. The good news? "It's the knowledge of forgiveness that better equips you to handle the scars."
