Lenten Connection– Fr Sean Cullen–Judas (Fr Sean ponders that we too can be Judas. Somewhere along the journey Judas lost his ideals, and we face similar challenges and temptations; losing our ideals to climb the ladder of success and wealth, allowing ourselves to become a slave to money and ego.)
Pietà Lenten Series–Fr Sean Cullen–Master of My Life. Fr Sean Cullen says that we are all enslaved to something and the truth of the Gospel lets us face the truth about ourselves.
Pietà Lenten Series–Fr Sean Cullen–Law and Love (Fr Sean Cullen says that in the Gospel for this coming Wednesday Jesus gives us his version of the law-and-order debate that the leadership were having with the people of God. This debate has been going on for a long time. Jesus assures his disciples that he has come, not to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it. On one side were the scribes and Pharisees, to them, the Law was everything. On the other side was Jesus with his concern for people. How could concern for people and commitment to the Law come together? Which was valid? For Jesus, both. As he saw it, the Law was intended for the protection and enrichment of life. We need rules. We need precedents. We need guidelines if we are to live authentically in this morally confused world. But people must remain primary creating a beautiful blend of law and love.)
Pietà Lenten Series–Fr Sean Cullen–Discipleship (Fr Sean Cullen says that in the Gospel for Thursday after Ash Wednesday, Jesus tells us the criteria he is seeking for being a disciple. The first thing a follower must do is deny self. It simply means that we get ourselves out of the centre. We must acknowledge that we are not the hub of the universe. No one can lead a selfish life and be a follower of Jesus at the same time. Next, we must take up our cross every day. In his own life, the cross was an unpleasant experience, but more than that, it was a symbol of his commitment to the Father. He was living life according to the will of God, and nothing could deter him from that, not even a cross. These are the conditions of discipleship. Get self out of the centre and put God there, and then follow in Jesus' steps.)

The Sign Advent Series–Fr Sean Cullen–My Son the Beloved (On Monday 8 January we celebrate the baptism of the Lord. On the day of his Baptism, the voice from heaven said: “You are my beloved son. On you my favour rests” (Mk 1:11). Fr Sean Cullen says that by studying the life of Jesus, we can learn what the favour of God really means, and how it applies to each of us. Looking at the life of Jesus, we conclude that divine favour primarily means a chance to participate in the great redemptive work of God. Our commitment to Jesus is often less than single-minded because we are distracted by the need to succeed, the pressure to accumulate, the desire for adulation. We do not need to try and win God's favour. Nothing we can do will prove our worthiness of God's love, yet God loves us anyway. We are already blessed sons and daughters of God. We just need to find our place in God's great work of redemption.)
The Sign Advent Series–Fr Sean Cullen–Radiant Light (The traditional belief is that Jesus was born at night, a belief that contains powerful symbolism. It is certainly true that Jesus came into a world that was engulfed in spiritual darkness. Caesar ruled with force—the basis of his government. Slavery was the primary source of labour. Violence was the primary mode of entertainment. Coming into this darkened world, Jesus' birth was like a rising sun. There are striking parallels with the everyday event of the rising sun and the climactic event of Christmas day. One other characteristic of the sun rising that symbolises the birth of Christ is its power. Once it starts, there's no stopping it. In our darkened world, His coming was, and is, like a new sunrise.)

As people of Christ, we need to be there in all of the ways we can be there, for what God did once in the life of Jesus, God continues to do through us. So, how does the Word become flesh in us? By being present. The person who is grieving, or guilt-ridden, or despairing, needs the gift of a personal presence. Our world doesn't just need the Word, it needs the Word to become flesh. This Christmas offer the gift of your personal presence.)
