Welcome back to Inbox of Oddities, where the Freak Family takes over the show. This week, Kat and JG dive into a collection of hilarious, bizarre, and unexpectedly heartfelt listener stories. You'll hear about a hidden message painted beneath a bathroom floor declaring that Toby is not the Scranton Strangler, a dog-grooming boo effect involving unfortunate timing and an even more unfortunate canine gas attack, and a listener who uses a real human skull named Esther to motivate children to do their chores. The Freak Family also shares strange sandwich creations, debates the wisdom of squeeze jelly versus homemade preserves, discusses eerie stories from hospice care and apparent returns from the dead, and explores the odd psychological phenomenon of imagining what podcast hosts look like before seeing them in real life. Along the way, there are stories about haunted houses, Dorothea Puente's infamous Sacramento boarding house, hidden messages left for future generations, anglerfish romance, ghost writers becoming actual ghosts, and a surprisingly successful rhyme for "gaping flesh wound." As always, Inbox of Oddities delivers a strange mix of humor, weird history, listener oddities, accidental paranormal moments, and the wonderfully peculiar stories that make the Freak Family unlike any audience on Earth. If you enjoy unusual true stories, weird listener experiences, dark humor, paranormal curiosities, folklore, strange history, and delightfully odd human behavior, this episode is for you. The Box of Oddities is hosted by Kat and JG, celebrating the weird, the wonderful, and the unexplained one odd story at a time. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
She looked like a harmless little old lady. She was a soft spoken landlady in Sacramento who took in elderly, disabled, and mentally ill tenants who had nowhere else to go. But inside her home, she controlled their money, intercepted their mail, and in many cases, they quietly disappeared while their Social Security checks continued to be cashed. Then when a missing person report led police to dig in her backyard in November 1988, they uncovered multiple bodies buried just beneath the surface. What followed was an investigation that revealed a calculated system of control, exploitation, and death that had gone unnoticed for years. Our other podcast: "FEARFUL" - https://open.spotify.com/show/56ajNkLiPoIat1V2KI9n5c?si=OyM38rdsSSyyzKAFUJpSywMERCH:https://www.redbubble.com/people/wickedandgrim/shop?asc=uPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/wickedandgrim?fan_landing=trueYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@wickedlifeFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/wickedandgrim/ Instagram:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wickedandgrim/?hl=enTwitter: https://twitter.com/wickedandgrimWebsite: https://www.wickedandgrim.com/
The three mustaches are joined by Ben and Sarah Lambert from the only Michelin starred barbecue restaurant in the world. Why are there professional chefs on the show? Because it's time to cook some killer food from a serial killer's cook book! Between 1982 and 1988, Dorothea ran a boarding house for the elderly and infirm in Sacramento, California. Unfortunately, her charitable endeavor soon came under scrutiny due to her residents mysteriously dropping dead. So, sit back and enjoy the story as Ben and Sarah prepare a few of Dorothea's classic recipes from her book, 'Cooking with a Serial Killer'.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Dorothea Puente looked like the perfect landlady. Warm. Trustworthy. Harmless. But behind the doors of her Sacramento boarding house lurked something far darker.Throughout the 1980s, she preyed on the elderly and mentally disabled, offering shelter before poisoning them, burying their bodies in her garden, and cashing their Social Security checks. For years, she got away with it.Until one disappearance exposed a chilling truth: this was not a home, it was a graveyard.Even more disturbing, she was only convicted of three murders, leaving the full scale of her crimes unresolved. This episode uncovers a story of manipulation, greed, and cold blooded calculation.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. Episode DescriptionWhen you think about 1980s killers, names like Bundy, Ramirez, and Dahmer come to mind. But what about the women? In this episode of Terror Talk: Killer Minds and Creepy Stuff, Shannon and [co-host's name] pull back the curtain on female psychopaths of the decade — both the ones who made headlines and the ones who terrified us on screen. We move through the decade year by year, uncovering shocking real crimes:Christine Falling, the teenage babysitter turned child killer.Genene Jones, the Texas nurse who murdered infants in her care.Diane Downs, whose narcissism led her to shoot her own children.Dorothea Puente, the “sweet old lady” running a boarding house of death.Griselda Blanco, the ruthless “Cocaine Godmother.”And the emergence of Aileen Wuornos, one of history's most infamous female serial killers. At the same time, Hollywood and international horror were building their own female psychopath archetypes:The Fan (1981) and the dangers of obsession.Bloody Birthday and Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker tearing apart family and innocence.Fatal Attraction (1987), where Glenn Close redefined the “woman scorned.”And finally Misery (1990), with Kathy Bates's Oscar-winning portrayal of Annie Wilkes.Together, we explore why these women — real and fictional — terrified the world. Why did betrayal of trust by mothers, nurses, and lovers cut deeper than stranger-danger? And what did these portrayals reveal about shifting gender roles, cultural anxieties, and the way society views dangerous women? This episode is part history lesson, part cultural analysis, and part psychological deep dive into why the 1980s cemented the female psychopath as both a real and reel icon.✨ Listen now and step into a decade where lipstick, motherhood, and obsession became weapons just as lethal as knives and guns.
She dressed like a grandmother, lied about her age, and acted like a guardian angel… while secretly killing the very people she claimed to help. Dorothea Puente is one of the most prolific female serial killers. Using her grandmotherly demeanor and image, she used the boarding house she ran to murder her residents and cash in on their social security checks. A search of her backyard led to the discovery of seven bodies, but Puente was able to slip out of investigators' grasp by going out “for a cup of coffee”. Thankfully she was found in Southern California just days later and was charged with 9 murders in all. Her true victim count is unknown, as she maintained her innocence for her entire life. But the truth behind her crimes are more sinister than anyone who knew her could have ever imagined. Puente's known victims were Benjamin Fink, Leona Carpenter, Dorothy Miller, Betty Mae Palmer, James Gallop, Vera Faye Martin, Alvaro “Bert” Gonzales Montoya, Ruth Monroe, and Everson Gillmouth. In 1988, Dorothea Puente, an elderly and seemingly sweet landlady in Sacramento, California, was arrested after a series of mysterious disappearances plagued her boarding house. When investigators uncovered the remains of several bodies buried on her property, the true horror of her actions came to light: she had been drugging and killing vulnerable elderly and disabled individuals under her care, cashing in on their benefits. As the full extent of her gruesome crimes emerged, a shocking pattern of manipulation and murder was revealed. This is the story of the Death House Landlady.
In the second part of our two-part episode, Dorothea Puente's dark crimes begin to unravel. Still, the question remains: Can anyone truly believe this seemingly harmless “little old lady” is capable of murder? As we dig deeper into her chilling history, some believe the spirit of Dorothea herself lingers, haunting the very boarding house where her horrific acts took place.Audio edited by Maxwell Holechek
In November of 1988, detectives are called to the boardinghouse of Dorothea Puente to investigate the disappearance of one of her residents and are quickly shocked as bodies start to be unearthed. In the first part of our two-part episode, we look at Dorothea Puente's childhood, her life, and what may have led a woman to commit such horrific crimes. Edited by Maxwell Holechek
Part 2! This week, we are diving into a personal favorite case: the story of Dorothea Puente! This murderous granny lived a wild life before turning her petty crimes up many notches, all the way to serial murder. From humble beginnings in Redlands, CA, all the way to dancing with the Governor and rubbing elbows with California's politically elite, and all the way back down to life in a jail cell, Dorothea Puente's life was anything but boring. It was also immensely evil, tragic, and just plain sad, and we'll be sure to talk all about all those things in this two part case!Fear not, we will be posting both parts back to back, so no waiting! We know monsters come in all shapes and sizes. Today's case features an innocent-looking grandmother who ended up being one of America's most violent serial killers.
TW: Gewalt an Schutzbedürftigen, explizite Gewaltdarstellung (Fall beginnt ab 17:38 min.) To the outside world, Dorothea Puente presented herself as a kind grandmotherly figure who cared for the disabled and vulnerable residents of her boarding house in downtown Sacramento. But behind closed doors, nothing was as it seemed… Not only was she stealing the money of her tenant, but she was also a serial killer. Allegedly murdering up to nine people. In today's episode, we explore the crimes of the ‘Death House landlady' who even after she was convicted managed to win over people with her sweet, grandmotherly ruse. Dorothea Puente may have looked every bit the placid old lady she played. In reality, she was in her early fifties, and was using her self-made status as a ‘pillar of the community' to divert attention away from what was buried and rotting in her garden. Whether her victims had a few hundred thousand dollars, a nice pick-up truck, or even just a meagre social security cheque – they all risked the wrath of the ‘Death House Landlady'.
