American serial killer
POPULARITY
Dorothea Puente is one of the most prolific female serial killers. Using her grandmotherly demeanor and image, she used the boarding house she ran to murder her residents and cash in on their social security checks. A search of her backyard led to the discovery of seven bodies, but Puente was able to slip out of investigators' grasp by going out “for a cup of coffee”. Thankfully she was found in Southern California just days later and was charged with 9 murders in all. Her true victim count is unknown, as she maintained her innocence for her entire life. But the truth behind her crimes are more sinister than anyone who knew her could have ever imagined. Puente's known victims were Benjamin Fink, Leona Carpenter, Dorothy Miller, Betty Mae Palmer, James Gallop, Vera Faye Martin, Alvaro “Bert” Gonzales Montoya, Ruth Monroe, and Everson Gillmouth. In 1988, Dorothea Puente, an elderly and seemingly sweet landlady in Sacramento, California, was arrested after a series of mysterious disappearances plagued her boarding house. When investigators uncovered the remains of several bodies buried on her property, the true horror of her actions came to light: she had been drugging and killing vulnerable elderly and disabled individuals under her care, cashing in on their benefits. As the full extent of her gruesome crimes emerged, a shocking pattern of manipulation and murder was revealed. This is the story of the Death House Landlady.
In the second part of our two-part episode, Dorothea Puente's dark crimes begin to unravel. Still, the question remains: Can anyone truly believe this seemingly harmless “little old lady” is capable of murder? As we dig deeper into her chilling history, some believe the spirit of Dorothea herself lingers, haunting the very boarding house where her horrific acts took place.Audio edited by Maxwell Holechek
In November of 1988, detectives are called to the boardinghouse of Dorothea Puente to investigate the disappearance of one of her residents and are quickly shocked as bodies start to be unearthed. In the first part of our two-part episode, we look at Dorothea Puente's childhood, her life, and what may have led a woman to commit such horrific crimes. Edited by Maxwell Holechek
Part 2! This week, we are diving into a personal favorite case: the story of Dorothea Puente! This murderous granny lived a wild life before turning her petty crimes up many notches, all the way to serial murder. From humble beginnings in Redlands, CA, all the way to dancing with the Governor and rubbing elbows with California's politically elite, and all the way back down to life in a jail cell, Dorothea Puente's life was anything but boring. It was also immensely evil, tragic, and just plain sad, and we'll be sure to talk all about all those things in this two part case!Fear not, we will be posting both parts back to back, so no waiting!
TW: Gewalt an Schutzbedürftigen, explizite Gewaltdarstellung (Fall beginnt ab 17:38 min.) To the outside world, Dorothea Puente presented herself as a kind grandmotherly figure who cared for the disabled and vulnerable residents of her boarding house in downtown Sacramento. But behind closed doors, nothing was as it seemed… Not only was she stealing the money of her tenant, but she was also a serial killer. Allegedly murdering up to nine people. In today's episode, we explore the crimes of the ‘Death House landlady' who even after she was convicted managed to win over people with her sweet, grandmotherly ruse. Dorothea Puente was known as the nice old lady that ran a boarding house. Suddenly, some of her tenets started passing away.
Dorothea Puente may have looked every bit the placid old lady she played. In reality, she was in her early fifties, and was using her self-made status as a ‘pillar of the community' to divert attention away from what was buried and rotting in her garden. Whether her victims had a few hundred thousand dollars, a nice pick-up truck, or even just a meagre social security cheque – they all risked the wrath of the ‘Death House Landlady'. It is November 11, 1988, when Detective John Cabrera and his team pay a visit to the once regal but past its prime Victorian home located on F Street in Sacramento, California. The detectives are conducting a wellness check on 51-year-old Alvaro "Bert" Montoya. Bert, a tenant at the home, has an intellectual disability. His social worker had phoned the police, worried that he was missing since she had not heard from him. They knock on the door and are greeted by a landlady of the home, an older woman. Det. Caberea asked her if they could look around the place, and she agreed and told them to go ahead. “Dig in my yard. I don't know what's out there.” She knew exactly what, or shall I say, who was in her yard.Join Jen and Cam on the 5th Annual Our True Crime Podcast's 12 Nightmares Before Christmas -Day 9: Landlady from Hell: Dorothea Puente.Listener Discretion by @octoberpodVHS All music is courtesy of our Executive Producer @wetalkofdreams Sources:http://articles.latimes.com/1989-03-25/news/mn-500_1_doodyhttps://www.latimes.com/local/obituaries/la-xpm-2011-mar-28-la-me-0328-dorothea-puente-20110328-story.htmlhttps://oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/c8b85fn5/entire_text/http://www.absolutecrime.com/dorothea-puente-and-the-boarding-house-of-death.html#.XWXz2Ht7nIUhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadly_Womenhttps://www.netflix.com/watch/81149403http://www.kcra.com/article/sacramento-serial-killer-s-former-home-renovated-ready-for-visits/6407363http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/news-columns-blogs/city-beat/article33287136.html"House of Horrors". The Dorothea Puente Murder House is a private home that was once a boarding house run by serial killer Dorothea Puente. She made the downtrodden of her community her victims, while at the same time appearing to be a pillar of the community. She had a handful of victims that she buried in her backyard. And spiritual residue seems to have been left behind at this location.
