KISS Vinnie Vincent Invasion iTunes Review: Great listen by Rocr2 on Jan 10, 2018 Rating: ★★★★★ This pod cast gets a five star just for turning me onto Orchid! Can’t even begin to imagine the prep time these guys put into a show bringing a great wealth of knowledge ,humor and entertaining . It’s also refreshing to hear a music related podcast where the host does not talk about himself for half of it. Amazing variety of bands , songs , sounds , interesting bio , little known facts and even some useless information packed into each show. Their passion shows through on every episode!!!!! If your not a subscriber you are missing out. Facebook Review: Joe Bernstein reviewed Decibel Geek Podcast — 5 star January 12 at 2:16pm · I just discovered Decibel Geek podcasts. As a child of the '70's and '80's, this is right up my alley. I drive truck for a living, and prefer to listen to things to keep my brain engaged, and this certainly fits the bill. Your passion and knowledge for the music we all love makes the podcasts enjoyable. But the interaction amongst yourselves, with the sense of humor, respect (for each other and the guests) as well as love for the deep cuts and out-of-the-ordinary, make this podcast a necessity. Hello Oasis, Goodbye Ramones, and Welcome Back Van Halen (Sorta) - 1996 Year in Review Pt2 Ep306

Decibel Geek Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 31, 2017 115:50

We're back this week to tackle July through December for our 1996 Year in Review Pt2. July sees Layne Staley taking the stage for the last time. The Alice in Chains vocalist would overdose after a show in Kansas City, MO and never perform live again. Also in July, the Spice Girls hit big while scientists clone the first sheep. We're not saying there's a connection. We also aren't saying there isn't one. We discuss these stories and spin tunes from Jack Russell and Sublime. The month of August in this 1996 Year in Review Pt2 is a busy one. Oasis is hitting their peak on the strength of 1995's 'What's the Story Morning Glory' album. The band is selling out shows all over the world while getting massive press for shooting off their mouths. Conversely, Ramones were wrapping up a three decade career filled with great songs as well as disappointment.  We take on these subjects as well as play cuts from Type O Negative and Michael Schenker Group. 1996 Year in Review Pt2   September of 1996 contains a bunch of great music. In this 1996 Year in Review Pt2 episode we spin fresh tracks from Thunder, Rush, Neurotic Outsiders, and Tool. Moreover, October sees the trend of solid rock music continue with releases by Marilyn Manson, Motorhead, Dio, and a greatest hits album by Van Halen. Speaking of Van Halen, the band shocked the world at the MTV Video Music Awards as the band reunited on stage with original singer David Lee Roth to present an award. The reunion was over before it began, however, and the whole thing fizzled quickly due to infighting. We discuss the Van Halen reunion that wasn't in this episode. The month of October 1996 included a big announcement by guitar hero Slash as he announced his departure from Guns N Roses. This announcement cemented most music fans opinion that the band was finished. Additionally, October included new music from Ugly Kid Joe, Corrosion of Conformity and a strange new release from LA Guns. We share some tracks from these bands and discuss some of the reasons behind Slash's big decision. November and December of 1996 included newsworthy items such as Bill Clinton defeating Bob Dole in the US election and the launch of the Mars Global Surveyor. New music from Gotthard, Poison, and Nerf Herder is unleashed on the world. We take a look at these stories this week. So many subjects, so many songs, and so much more including Top Movies of 1996 and classic commercials! We hope you enjoy 1996 Year in Review Pt2 and SHARE with a friend! Chris and Aaron return this week to countdown their Top 10 albums of the year that was in Best of 2016 - Ep269. In this 2 hour-plus episode, your hosts find themselves looking back on a year that had many highs as well as lows. The music world lost a ton of talent; causing many to label it the "worst year ever." While those losses certainly stung the guys as well, they prove in this episode that there was a ton of great music released in 2016 including albums from legends such as Metallica, Megadeth, Suicidal Tendencies, and Testament. Best of 2016 Other great releases came from bands such as Volbeat, Tango Down, Crobot, The Dead Daisies, and many, many more. In this long-form episode the guys knock back a few beers and blast out some great rock and metal from the year that was 2016. We hope you enjoy Best of 2016 - Ep269 and SHARE with a friend! They have finally hit their stride! For those of you who don't know, these dudes have been at this podcasting thing for quite some time. They may have changed their names since their original podcasts, but I was able to figure out their ruse. ("Czynszak" - really,... that's the best you could come up with?) You see back in the day, Chirs Sinsack and Aaron Pinto hosted a great YES podcast called "Close to the Edge of Our Lonely Hearts". Unfortunately, it only lasted a couple of episodes, because the shows lasted for 12 hours due to the self-indulgent nature of prog rock. ITunes cyber police pulled it for breaking bandwidth rules and the guys were without a show. A few months later, I stumbled on to a Juice Newton fanatics podcast called "Juice Box" and recognized some familiar voices. However, that show didn't last long either since Aaron kept falling asleep during the taping and because of the fact that there were only 3 listeners (Chris apparently had multiple accounts). Then I heard this fantastic podcast called Decibel Geek that covered all things Hard Rock & Metal (and covered it really well!). Although the names had been changed to protect the innocent, it was definitely Chris & Aaron. These guys do a hell of a job bringing fresh perspectives to the genre and a lot of it's sub-genres in the metal world. On a weekly basis you can expect great interviews, amazing knowledge of the bands & eras and lots of laughs with guys that seem like your friends back home. 5 starz all the way! Producer and longtime friend of Ace Frehley, Crazy Joe Renda stops by to share Ace Stories about everyone's favorite spaceman. Joe first came to prominence in KISS fan circles with the novelty song, 'Eugene' released under the moniker of Crazy Joe & The Variable Speed Band. The song would go down in KISSTORY as Ace Frehley's first musical project outside of the band as he's a co-writer and co-producer of the song. Joe also founded and ran North Lake Sound studio in White Plains, NY along with fellow songwriter Chip Taylor (known for ' Wild Thing', 'Rock Soldiers' and 'Angel of the Morning'). Joe is also the producer for prank phone call legends The Jerky Boys. Ace Stories with Crazy Joe Renda In this long-form conversation, Joe shares some incredible stories of hanging out with Ace Frehley and being around the business of KISS. Stories of the interpersonal relationships between Ace and the other members of the band are shared including the dynamic between the "2 camps" of Simmons and Stanley vs Criss and Frehley. Also included are Joe's recollections of Ace's decision to quit KISS and how Gene Simmons pleaded with Joe to attempt to keep Ace on as a member of the band. Other stories involving a testy meeting between Peter Criss and Eric Carr, loads of stories of Ace truly being a rock  n' roll wild man and so much more including the story of how 'Eugene' was created and how it connects to KISS (not in the way you would expect). It's an hour-plus of jaw dropping stories about Jendell's favorite son. In this long-form talk, Williams talks about his discovery of KISS via the MTV Unplugged appearance in 1995. He also talks about the MTV Video Music Awards performance that the reunited band gave under the Brooklyn Bridge as the clincher in his fandom. Christopher is no ordinary KISS fan. In this hour-plus discussion he describes the scenario which led him seek and acquire one of Peter Criss' reunion era drum sets. It's a great story that has many twists and turns. He also relives his first KISS concert and how he had interactions with each band member throughout the set. Christopher Williams Aside from playing with metal legends ACCEPT, Christopher works steadily in numerous other musical endeavors including performances with a local group of musicians known as Blonder Than Hell. This group features bassist ET Brown, Williams, and Thee Rock N' Roll Residency founders (and former guests on this show) Jeremy Asbrock and Phillip Shouse. The guys are joined this week by filmmaker/guitarist Steve McClure to discuss the great new rock documentary Hair I Go Again; a film that follows the long journey of two middle aged guys attempting to put their 80's rock band back together, the twists and turns, highs and lows, and challenges they face. Along the way, the guys get an education in the form of advice from numerous 80's rock luminaries including The Killer Dwarfs, Lorraine Lewis (Femme Fatale), Warrant, Jason McMaster, Tesla, Jack Russell, Steve Blaze (Lillian Axe), and Ron Keel. They also get advice from media personalities such as Eddie Trunk and Luc Carl.             Hair I Go Again Hair I Go Again was a long time coming as the film was crowd funded a few years ago while the guys were on their journey to reunite the band. As you'll see in the film, getting 5 guys back together again is not an easy task. In this talk, Steve McClure shares his take on the making of the movie including quitting his day job to fully invest in this project, the tension between he and his partner on this journey Kyle Kruger, and what it was like to throw all caution to the wind in an effort to find out what might have been. I'm glad I did. I searched hard rock in iTunes and a breakdown of Warrant's Dog Eat Dog with producer Michael Wagener popped up. Being a huge fan of that perfect record I downloaded it to give it a shot. Wagener offered great insight and nuggets I had never known. The two hosts asked GREAT questions and they played most of an album I haven't heard in years. I went back and started picking off things that interested me. What I found was nothing less than brilliant. I had about 2800 CDs at the time. Having been re/introduced to things I'd never heard before or in years I went straight to the web and started buying music as if I had all the money in the world. I don't have all the money in the world. But I don't care as I have about a hundred more CDs as a direct result of this show. Who needs food? Music feeds my soul. These guys conduct great interviews and have been a great resource for hearing old forgotten classics. Just as important is they've introduced me to a lot of great new music. It's a great blend of memory lane and discovery street. Keep it up guys. You have a new subscriber and I will click through before purchasing anything on Amazon from now on. Conversation with Perry Richardson

Decibel Geek Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 12, 2016 95:01

Former FireHouse bassist Perry Richardson sits down with Chris & Aaron to discuss his career in rock music. In this hour-plus discussion, Perry shares stories of his early history with bands such as Maxx Warrior and Nantucket. He then moves on to discuss the formation and rise of FireHouse. On the success of the singles 'Don't Treat Me Bad' and 'Love of a Lifetime,' FireHouse's self-titled debut album took off; selling over 2 million copies. The band won the 1992 American Music Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance, beating out up and coming Grunge acts Alice in Chains and Nirvana. In this conversation, Perry shares the story of a not-so-friendly encounter with Alice in Chains at the awards show after-party. Perry Richardson   FireHouse's second album 'Hold Your Fire' also achieved success on the chart activity of singles 'Reach for the Sky', 'When I Look Into Your Eyes,' and 'Sleeping with You;' the latter of which Perry has no love lost. In this long-form talk, he also shares road stories of touring with Poison and Damn Yankees, including an interesting exchange with Ted Nugent on his way to the stage. While the American heyday of FireHouse seems to be limited to their first two albums, things were just getting started for the band around the world. With the release of 1995's '3' album, the band was propelled to stardom overseas; especially in Asia. In this long form talk, Perry shares some incredible stories about an extended tour of Indonesia that includes near-death experiences as well as a story of crew member disappearing in the most shocking of ways. 1998 saw a resurgence in interest in "hair bands" and FireHouse was certainly in the mix as they toured along with Warrant, Quiet Riot, LA Guns, and Slaughter for the Rock Never Stops tour. Perry Richardson left FireHouse in 2000 after touring on the release of 1998's 'Category 5' album. In this talk, he shares his take on what led to his exit from the band and how that exit led him to Nashville and his current gig as bassist for country music star Craig Morgan. Conversation with Desmond Child - Ep195

Decibel Geek Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 29, 2015 78:31

In the 4+ years Aaron and Chris have been doing this podcast, they never expected to meet today's guest. We're thrilled to share this talk with you. Episode 195 Legendary songwriter/producer Desmond Child welcomes Chris and Aaron into his studio for an in-depth discussion about his life in music. In this hour-plus talk, Desmond looks back on his early days as a performer in the NY-based disco group Desmond Child and Rouge. This band was a favorite of KISS singer/guitarist Paul Stanley, who used to frequent the band's live shows. A friendship was struck as well as gold when the two collaborated on 'I Was Made for Lovin' You', a Top 10 smash that spanned the globe. Desmond's career in writing/producing took off from there. In this conversation, Desmond shares his memories of working with some hard rock and metal legends. From his time working with Stanley and KISS on albums such as Animalize, Asylum, Crazy Nights, and Hot in the Shade, Desmond shares his memories of Paul Stanley's songwriting process as well as a strained relationship with Gene Simmons over some words said in an interview during the buildup to 1992's 'Revenge' album. Desmond Child helped propel Bon Jovi to superstardom due to his collaboration with band on songs such as 'Livin' on a Prayer' and 'You Give Love a Bad Name' from 1986's Slippery When Wet album. In this discussion, Desmond sets the scene of a trip to a suburban New Jersey home and the process in which two of the biggest anthems in rock history were born. The songs carry a very personal meaning to Desmond and he explains how the stories in these songs related to his real life. Also notable in the hard rock world is Desmond Child's work with Boston rockers Aerosmith. Once again, his contributions would make a massive difference in a band's career; this time in the resurrection of a band that had been long-thought finished. Desmond's contributions in the form  of, most notably, '(Dude) Looks Like a Lady' and 'Angel' would help 1987's Permanent Vacation album go on to sell over 5 million copies in the US alone. His collaboration with Aerosmith has lasted ever since with the writing partnership being evident on subsequent albums such as Pump, Get a Grip, Nine Lives, and Music from Another Dimension. During this in-depth talk, Desmond shares his passion in protecting music creator's rights and his thoughts on the decline of sales in music and how this trend is negatively affecting the industry and its impact on future generations of musicians. In this discussion, he shares information about the Songwriters Equity Act and the Fair Trade Music Initiative, a wholly independent advocacy network for music creators. Its goal is the championing of a set of Fair Trade Music Principles designed to ensure transparency, fair compensation, and autonomy for music creators in an increasingly complex and non-transparent music business landscape. More information on the Songwriters Equity Act can be found HERE. More information on the Fair Trade Music Initiative is available HERE.
