POPULARITY
We’re taking a short break from Shonen Jump-related podcast to talk about a creator celebrating a special 50th anniversary milestone – Go Nagai! 2018 is the 50th year of the legendary mangaka's career, and he’s seen a resurgence of popularity thanks to a slew of new anime based on his works like Mazinger Z: Infinity, Cutie Honey Universe, and most famously, Devilman Crybaby! To celebrate Go Nagi’s legacy and the renaissance of his work in the anime community, we’re discussing the original Devilman manga, recently released in the U.S. for the first time in a beautiful hardcover edition courtesy of Seven Seas! Joining us is our good friend and devilishly handsome Go Nagai devotee Josh Dunham, host of Senpai Coast to Coast of co-founder of Wave Motion Cannon! We go over Go Nagi’s career, what inspired him to write Devilman, and how his personal demons may have carried over into his work. Josh provides a ton of wonderful insight on the chaotic, anarchic mind of Nagai, making for one of our best analytical discussion so far! This podcast has literally been two years in the making – we’ve been planning to do a Devilman podcast with Josh since we first had him on the show all the way back in July 2016, so it’s exciting to see it finally come to fruition! Sit back and listen as we explore the macabre world of Devilman and gleam as many insights we can from its dark and twisted world. But first, we’ve got our usual news roundup to go through! We discuss the Oricon Top Selling Manga list, which has some surprising series making it on to the top ten! Then, we discuss the deaths of several manga magazines in print, and speculate whether this trend heralds the end for manga magazines in general. Plus we discuss a lot of new manga, new licenses, and new anime that we’re really looking forward to! Even though World Trigger has been on hiatus for a long time, the love of its fans remains strong. With the series celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, we thought now would be as good as time as any to re-read and talk about it! Joining us are two VERY passionate World Trigger fans and Osamu Mikumo stans - Annaliese Christman, letterer of the series for Viz Media and Weekly Shonen Jump, and Wensleydale Cheddar, host of the Shonen Jump podcast Stammer Stream and the voice of Osamu in Team ODA:R’s World Trigger abridged series! Can they help LumRanmaYasha convince Colton that it’s the best sports manga that isn’t technically a sports manga ever made? Either way, we had a long and fun discussion of one of our favorite series, and we hope you enjoy it! But first, we’ve got a ton of news! On this episode of Life Lessons, we celebrate our (late) 4th anniversary with special guest, Josh Dunham, from Senpai Coast to Coast and Wave Motion Cannon, as we start off the show with a lot of small talk, including the results of our first podcast survey and even an email from a listener (guess who). Afterwards, we discuss Chapters 85 and 86 during our double manga recap, in which we recount a romantic tale of Shinpachi’s encounter with a lovely cat-eared girl on the train ride home. We also discuss Lessons 85 and 86 during our Life Lessons segment, followed by an Anime/Manga Comparison of Episodes 34 and 35 of the anime. Topics of discussion for this episode include the urban legend of the Densha Otoko (Train Man) of which this arc parodies, critique of both the humor what direction this story could or should have went in, and more of Josh and Colton’s terrible in-jokes.Special thanks to all of our listeners and recurring contributors for making 4 years of this podcast possible! Manga Mavericks was almost in a real crises this week folks. We normally record the show on Friday afternoons, but I was out on a trip during our regularly scheduled recording time, and Colton was too busy over the weekend to do the show on any other date. We had too options: either delay the show another week or two, or Colton getting someone to sub for me in my absence. Luckily, the man of the hour, esteemed anime podcaster extraordinaire Josh Dunham of Senpai Coast to Coast and Wave Motion Canon fame answered the call, and the fate of the podcast was secured! Then it turned out that they’d be recording at 7pm Friday night, and I’d be home by then, so I could do the podcast anyway. Which we could have just rescheduled to in the first place, making all our worrying for naught. Woops! But it was a happy accident, because while this was a short week of news, with our first-ever guest on board there was plenty to talk about! So join us this week as your titular Manga Mavericks and special guest dive right in to another two weeks worth of manga news, discussing the latest BookScan monthly report, the merit of the upcoming My Hero Academia spinoff series, and Oda’s claim that One Piece is 65% complete! Plus, Josh theorizes about the downfall of Bleach, and Colton postulates about what might very well be the worst manga ever made! The number 13 has never been luckier! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha, and Josh Dunham at @Josh_Dunham! If there’s something you want to ask that’s too big to tweet, drop us a line in the comments below, or e-mail us at mangamavericks@gmail.com! Thanks for listening!

A fighting game available on the PS3, PS Vita, and PS4, with a roster filled with characters from different Shonen Jump manga series (including Gintoki!).
