Diana explains that it wasn't simply bad luck — it was a fundamental misunderstanding of how the newsstand distribution system actually operated. In the early direct-market dominance era, that mistake was fatal. A harsh lesson in the business side of comics that too many creative-driven companies learned the hard way in the '80s.From there, Diana recounts her earlier blink-and-you'll-miss-it four-day stint at Marvel Comics as an assitant editor for Ann Nocenti , working under Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter. She doesn't hedge. The rigid, top-down editorial structure simply wasn't a fit for her. Diana closes this segment by giving heartfelt credit to her then-partner Bob Schreck for helping her land back on her feet, find new opportunities, and stay in the industry after some serious professional gut punches. Why cultural nuance matters, and why having the right English-language voice is essential to preserving tone and intent. We also rewind to the early '80s, when Diana launched The Telegraph Wire, a 32-page bi-monthly comics magazine that began as a retailer newsletter and became a proving ground for her editorial skills. She talks about learning graphic design on the fly, selling ads, interviewing creators, and building something from scratch in a pre-internet comics landscape. It's a vivid look at a smaller, more intimate industry, one where relationships mattered and information wasn't instantly searchable. Along the way, Diana reflects on working at Comics & Comix, getting recruited by Kim Thompson to write for Amazing Heroes, connecting with Matt Wagner, and navigating an industry that had very few women in visible roles at the time. She shares memories of mentors like Trina Robbins, editors like Maggie Thompson and contemproraries like Karen Berger, and even her wild experience serving as Tom Baker's minder at a Chicago Doctor Who convention, complete with behind-the-scenes fandom chaos. This first chapter of our conversation is about origins, craft, and survival in a young comics industry that was still figuring itself out. And it sets the stage for much more to come.

Nel corso della nuova puntata di Degiornalist - Gli Spaccanotizie di giovedì 11 settembre è tornato ospite Giorgio Panariello. Comico di primissimo livello, personaggio televisivo, conduttore, attore e molto altro ancora. Il nuovo spettacolo si chiama "E se domani..." e ci proietta nel futuro, come suggerisce il titolo: «Un futuro basato su cose che già sono presenti nel nostro mondo, immaginiamo qualcosa che ci sarà tra 25 anni: se per esempio oggi le stampanti 3D sono rinchiuse in capannoni giganteschi, tra 25 anni saranno nelle nostre case. E poi beh, tra 25 anni neanche io ci sarò più, per dire (sorride, ndr)!». Ai microfoni di Fabiana e Claudio Chiari è andato ancora più nel dettaglio, anche perché la stessa Fabiana ha una curiosità sui bagni del futuro: «La toilette come sarà? Beh, sarà tecnologica: mentre stiamo facendo i nostri bisogni, dietro ci saranno pulsanti che ci permetteranno di parlare con qualcuno! Non dimentichiamoci che quando andiamo in bagno, è il momento in cui ci vengono le idee!».

In 2025, we'll make these a regular thing, starting with Tyler Crook this week, diving deep into his cherished Mage: The Hero Discovered #6. Crook has appeared on the podcast multiple times, mostly exploring his exceptional Dark Horse Comics series, The Lonesome Hunters (links to those episodes below). He's a passionate, enthusiastic champion of this medium, and that devotion began at a very young age thanks to books like Mage: The Hero Discovered. We enjoyed this conversation with Crook about this comic so much that we've decided to drop it into the main podcast feed to entice some of you over to the CBCC Patreon, which we consider one of the most welcoming, loving comic book communities on the internet. Published by Comico in March of 1985, Mage: The Hero Discovered #6 landed just as the industry shifted. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 arrived the year before, while Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns were just on the horizon. Comics were ready to celebrate themselves as thematically rich, adult entertainment. NOT. KIDS. STUFF. Mage: The Hero Discovered #6 was written and illustrated by Matt Wagner and features additional inks by Sam Kieth. The series follows Kevin Matchstick, who is basically a stand-in for Wagner, as he tumbles into a fantasy adventure where each obstacle represents some issue or situation from his own life. Be warned, our conversation with Tyler Crook spoils the entirety of the sixth issue, as well as some critical plot points from the rest of the series. Although, knowledge of those plot points won't ruin your overall reading experience if you decide to read after you've listened to the episode. You probably know Adam Hughes from his fun and sexy covers that adorn comics nearly every month. But did you know he's spent nearly 40 years in the industry, working with virtually all major and indie publishers? Adam's first regular gig was on Mike Barr's Maze Agency from Comico. He then did a short run on Justice League America (with a continued cover run) before moving to Atlanta to join Gaijin Studios with artists like Brian Stelfreeze, Cully Hamner, Dave Johnson, and Tony Harris. He redesigned and reintroduced Ghost for Dark Horse's Comics Greatest World initiative. Adam went on to write and illustrate the Gen13: Ordinary Heroes miniseries for Wilstorm, before starting his famous cover run on Wonder Woman, Tomb Raider, and later, Catwoman. This is a tough one. This week we celebrate the life and career of Bernie Mireault. Bernie was a friend to the show and would always answer questions whenever we messaged him. Bernie was a visionary creator that made comics that not only inspired a whole generation of creators but also changed the look of the "superhero" forever. Not just in comics but in art as a whole. He was an amazing musician as well, and we feature some of his music here. Ben and I flip through a bunch of The Jam comics, the Mackenzie Queen trade, Madman and The Jam and more. Another editorial powerhouse, Bob Schreck has been all over the comics industry for the better part of five decades! He started out organizing and running conventions for Creation Entertainment in the mid 70s, then worked in marketing for Marvel before taking the reins at Comico (with then-wife and past guest Diana Schutz as EIC). From there, it was on to Dark Horse, where Bob expanded from his marketing role into editorial, overseeing such titles as Frank Miller's Sin City, Art Adam's Monkeyman and O'Brien, and the influential anthology Dark Horse Presents. Soon after his Dark Horse stint, he co-founded Oni Press, where among other projects, brought filmmaker Kevin Smith into the comics world. Then it was on to DC, where Bob oversaw huge Batman storylines like Hush, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, and Batman: Year 100, as well as Green Lantern, Green Arrow, All-Star Superman, and Sweet Tooth (Vertigo). And he still wasn't done, working for IDW and Legendary Comics after that. If you know Daredevil, you should know the name Roger McKenzie. Roger was the writer during a redefining Daredevil run in the 80s with Frank Miller. But he's also done so much more! He started with Warren Publishing in the 70s, writing for series like Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella. He did some work on horror and western titles for DC, before moving to Marvel. There, aside from Daredevil, Roger wrote the Battlestar Galactica adaptation, Captain America, and Marvel Fanfare. A fount of superlative editorial skill and knowledge, you may know Diana Schutz from her 25 years at Dark Horse Comics, where she oversaw such game-changing series as Frank Miller's Sin City, Mike Mignola's Hellboy, Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo, Paul Chadwick's Concrete, and Matt Wagner's Grendel, to name but a few. Of course, we rewind all the way back to the beginning, where Diana started her comics career at a Canadian shop earnestly titled The ComicShop. Diana then created a comicsw newsletter called the Telegraph Wire and contributed to various fanzines and conventions, before she was hired at Marvel for a short stint. Then, it was on to Comico, during that imprint's heyday, and ultimately Dark Horse.
