Bestselling authors William Bernhardt and Rene Gutteridge discuss the latest news from the book world, offer writing tips, and interview Lexie Elliott, who wrote The French Girl, which was published by Berkley in 2018, followed by The Missing Years and How to Kill Your Best Friend. Her fourth psychological thriller, BRIGHT AND DEADLY THINGS, was published on Valentine's Day. Chapter 1: IntroductionRene has no plan, Bill overplans, and Jesse prefers the hot tub.Chapter 2: News1) Romance and TikTok drive Bookscan sales2) Harper Collins Reduces Staff by 5%3) Indie Author Faked Her Own Death—Then Rose AgainChapter 3: InterviewLexie Elliott grew up at the foot of the Scottish Highlands, attending a local high school and spending much of her teenage years writing stories, reading and swimming. She earned a doctorate in theoretical physics from Oxford while also on the swimming and water polo team. She worked for an investment bank, took up triathlons, got married and had two boys, swam the English Channel solo, ran marathons and ultramarathons, and, of yeah, found time to write a novel. Her fourth psychological thriller, BRIGHT AND DEADLY THINGS, was recently published by Berkley. In this interview, you will learn:1) what it means to be a professional writer;2) how to make time to write with the busiest of schedules;3) the value of outlining;4) the beauty of setting; and5) how a background in theoretical physics informs her writing.Chapter 4: Parting WordsWilliam Bernhardt has a new novel coming out! You can pre-order The Florentine Poet (which has been called The Princess Bride Meets The Alchemist), a fun and fanciful journey of Pietro Begnini in Renaissance Italy. All he wants is to be a poet and to marry his beloved Sophia, but as you might imagine, there are problems. Dan Millman, author of Way of the Peaceful Warrior, wrote “This book sparkles like a jewel in a cosmic clockwork—an uplifting gift to readers everywhere.”Rene Gutteridge's film, Family Camp, won a major award. She has finished the screenplay for her next film.Until next time, keep writing, and remember: You cannot fail, if you refuse to quit.William Bernhardtwww.williambernhardt.comwww.writercon.com
You've probably heard the phrase, “A book is a business card.” That's because what you don't hear is that a book is a wonderful revenue generator! It isn't — at least not directly. The extreme Time-to-Revenue Ratio of writing and marketing a book is not for the faint of heart, unless the book connects directly to a larger part of your business model, serving as lead generation for more profitable products and services. Some interesting stats for you: Even the big behemoth, Penguin Random House, reports that just 35 percent of books they publish are profitable. Among those that make money, just 4 percent account for 60 percent of those profits. In 2021, fewer than one percent of the 3.2 million titles that BookScan tracked sold more than 5,000 copies. Continuing on last week's conversation about the three different publishing options and how to choose which one is right for you, today I'm diving deep into the mysterious royalty waters. How do each of the three methods — self, hybrid, traditional — stack up? Listen in to find out. For more data points beyond my own examples, check out The Transparency Project's Publishing Paid Me crowd-sourced spreadsheet with nearly 3,000 responses.

Wendy Corsi Staub knows how to keep things interesting after writing so many novels. By switching up her writing routine and process, branching out into areas like screenwriting, and reminding herself of why she's writing in the first place, she maintains her enthusiasm for her work and always looks forward to conquering a new challenge. Wendy is a NYT bestselling author who has written over ninety novels and is well known for her Lily Dale mystery series. To preorder her upcoming novel, The Other Family, follow the link below. From Amazon.com: New York Times bestseller Wendy Corsi Staub is the award-winning author of more than ninety novels, best known for the single title psychological suspense novels she writes under her own name. Those books and the women's fiction she writes under the pseudonym Wendy Markham have also appeared on the USA Today, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Bookscan bestseller lists. J.K. Rowling was nearly homeless when she wrote the first Harry Potter book. Stephen King penned CARRIE on a small desk wedged between a washer and dryer. James Patterson worked in advertising and famously wrote the Toys “R” Us theme song long before becoming an author. Whether you're traditionally published or indie, writing a good book is only the first step in becoming a successful author. The days of just turning a manuscript into your editor and walking away are gone. If you want to succeed in today's publishing world, you need to understand every aspect of the business - editing, formatting, marketing, contracts. It all starts with a good book, then the real work begins. Join international bestselling author J.D. Barker and indie powerhouses, J. Thorn and Zach Bohannon, as they gain unique insight and valuable advice from the most prolific and accomplished authors in the business. In this episode, you'll discover: How Wendy discovered creative writing in 3rd grade How to add a charged object to your story The importance of comic relief characters Why dictation can help with dialogue The differences between screenwriting and novel writing Links: J. A SONG FOR THE UNSUNG: Autumn is traditionally the season of "big books" -- books by the established heavy-hitters and the foreordained bestsellers among hot debuts. But in the midst of this season (and with Thanksgiving upon us), here's a tribute of gratitude to those who keep the literary world turning and the art-makers making. Mentioned in this episode: small books; unreviewed, unbought, and unawarded authors and poets; the disappearing midlist; "literary disappointments"; Bookscan; readers; commonplace books; editors; sales conferences; publishers; authors who help; writers who teach; experimentation; literary magazines; independent bookstores; the unconnected, unincluded, and uninvited best of the best. Daruma Matsuuran Kasane on jännitysdraama, jossa päähenkilö varastaa itseään kauniimpien naisten kasvoja voidakseen luoda uraa näyttelijänä. This week, we discuss the 2019 Bookscan sales charts, a bunch of listener questions, and some spoilers for Old Guard. Starring Ryan Higgins, Brock Sager, Kevin Sharp, Toby Sidler, and Charlie West.
With the demise of Lifeway and Family Christian brick and mortar bookstores, the Christian book industry has seen a massive decline in reporting stores over the past few years. In this episode, I'm joined by The Parable Group's Erik Ernstrom for a helpful discussion of the ways authors and ministries can ensure their sales are being recorded from as many channels as possible for inclusion in BookScan data and rankings for bestseller lists. Last week we sadly lost two influential mangaka whose works have become cultural institutions. Kazuhiko Kato, more popularly known by his pen name Monkey Punch, and Kazuo Koike have both passed away due to pneumonia. It’s bittersweet that Koike’s final tweets were reminiscing on his friend and rival, as both of their iconic series competed for popularity in Weekly Manga Action over nearly 50 years ago. His very last internet words were “I’m really going to miss him,” and we at Manga Mavericks feel the same about both creators. Lupin the Third is a franchise we both adore and one that has endured and entertained generations. Many of Koike’s works, including Lone Wolf and Cub, are absolute classics, and his legacy and influence on the medium can be seen through the numerous talents he helped nurture like Rumiko Takahashi and Tetsuo Hara, among many others. Both creators’ influence extend beyond manga, having even influence film directors abroad like Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino through film adaptations of their works. So while we mourn their passing, we also find solace that their life’s work and legacy will continue to live on. Though we’d like to spend more time eulogizing them, there’s been a lot of other news in the manga world we need to talk about. There’re new series, new licenses, and exciting opportunities for aspiring mangaka to break-in to the industry! Plus, we’ve got two new Jump Starts to talk about! Or, rather, “Manga Plus Starts” since they’re exclusive to that service. Did Heart Gear and Spy x Family soote our broken hearts, or are they series we’d rather exclude from the Manga Plus family? Listen in and find out! Look forward to next week’s podcast where we answer all your We Never Learn Q&As AND make an exciting announcement! What could it be? You’ll have to listen and see! On this episode of Manga Mavericks, in order to combat the early coming of winter in the mid west, Colton & Lum decide to sit down and talk about Akira Toriyama's Sand Land! A mini-series about a world ravaged by war and disaster and the humans and demons who try and take back their water supply from a corrupt monarchy. Colton discusses the series as someone who has only read it for the first time, while Lum discusses his experience revisiting the series via its original run in Viz Media's Shonen Jump Magazine all the way back from 2003! We also discuss our usual helping of manga news including the newest BookScan lists, Hajime Isayama's original Attack on Titan prototype, and the top 10 Dragon Ball moments as voted by Japanese fans! Lydia Kiesling tricked herself into writing a novel by starting with small vignettes about her feelings as a new parent and setting them in a northern California that's rarely explored in literature. The result of tying those scenes together is her excellent debut, THE GOLDEN STATE. She and James talk about her work as editor of THE MILLIONS, spreadsheets, local newspapers, present tense, and barfing toddlers. Plus, Shuchi Saraswat from Brookline Booksmith talks about the Transnational Literature Series and book sales. - Lydia Kiesling: http://www.lydiakiesling.com/ Lydia and James Discuss: CAL SUNDAY MAGAZINE Sarah Smarsh Hamilton College OFF COURSE by Michelle Huneven MODOC COUNTY RECORD David Lodge Sarah Blackwood LUCKY JIM by Kingsley Amis Tobias Wolff Brandon Taylor THE MILLIONS Laura van den Berg Emily Bell Charles Dickens THE GRADUATE dir by Mike Nichols C. We are living in a time of unprecedented distrust in America: Faith in the government is at an all-time low, and political groups on both sides of the aisle are able to tout preposterous conspiracy theories as gospel, without much opposition. “Fake news” is the order of the day. This book is about a man to whom all of it points, the greatest conspiracist of this generation and a man you may not have heard of. A former U.S. naval intelligence worker, Milton William Cooper published his manifesto Behold a Pale Horse in 1991. Since then it has gone on to sell hundreds of thousands of copies, becoming the number-one bestseller in the American prison system. (Bookscan lists sales at 289,000 since 2005.) According to Behold a Pale Horse, JFK was assassinated—because he was about to reveal that extraterrestrials were about to take over the earth—by his driver, an alien himself; AIDS is a government conspiracy to decrease the population of blacks, Hispanics, and homosexuals; and the Illuminati are secretly involved with the U.S. government to manage relationships with extraterrestrials. Cooper died in a shootout with Apache County police in 2001, one month after September 11, in the year in which he had predicted catastrophe. Cooper died in a shootout with Apache County police in 2001, one month after September 11, in the year in which he had predicted catastrophe. Many of Cooper’s conclusions were driven by personal demons and a highly creative connection of dots, and yet they have shaped much of the fabric of American life in the past few decades. Terry Nichols, Timothy McVeigh’s cohort in the Oklahoma City bombing, was a fan, and Behold a Pale Horse has great appeal among right-wing radicals. On the other hand, the book transcends class and race barriers: It is read primarily by poor blacks in prison and appeals to people who acutely feel that society is fixed against them. It has inspired numerous hip-hop groups and continues to do so. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It’s only fitting that we hit our 50th episode during the same year we’re celebrating Weekly Shonen Jump’s 50th anniversary. Maybe we’ll eventually run fifty years ourselves. Hey, we’ve got two years down already, what’s another forty-eight? Regardless, we want to thank all you listeners for helping us reach this far! Your listenership and support makes doing this show all the more fun and fulfilling for us to do, and we want to keep going for a long while yet. To celebrate our 50th episode milestone, we wanted to revisit a series we’ve previously discussed on the show. So we decided to go back to class - Assassination Classroom that is! Turns out Colton never quite graduated from the series back when we first talked about it, so now that Viz Media’s release of the manga has concluded, we decided it was time to go back and finish it. Joining us is our guest from our original Yusei Matsui retrospective, Kiirobon, best known for his Shonen Sunday blog but also an avid Matsui fan in his own right! Together we discuss the trials and triumphs, the laughs and cries, the anything and everything of Yusei Matsui’s hit series about an unkillable octopus-monster teacher and his 28 would-be middle-school student assassins! But of course, we’ve got to talk about the news first! We discuss a slew of new One Piece spinoffs, the expiring licenses of several high-profile anime, and cool convention news! Plus, we talk about the latest Bookscan and discuss controversial topics like Viz Media dropping the Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Arc and the repercussions faced by the New Life+ light novel author for his racist twitter comments! With as much as we had to talk about, we surprisingly manage to cover it all in only an hour! Which is good considering our Assassination Classroom episode managed to be over three hours long! This isn’t our longest episode, but it’s sure in the running. Which, hey, it’s our 50th episode. It deserves to be! This isn’t our longest episode, but it’s sure in the running. Which, hey, it’s our 50th episode. It deserves to be! Even though World Trigger has been on hiatus for a long time, the love of its fans remains strong. With the series celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, we thought now would be as good as time as any to re-read and talk about it! Joining us are two VERY passionate World Trigger fans and Osamu Mikumo stans - Annaliese Christman, letterer of the series for Viz Media and Weekly Shonen Jump, and Wensleydale Cheddar, host of the Shonen Jump podcast Stammer Stream and the voice of Osamu in Team ODA:R’s World Trigger abridged series! Can they help LumRanmaYasha convince Colton that it’s the best sports manga that isn’t technically a sports manga ever made? Either way, we had a long and fun discussion of one of our favorite series, and we hope you enjoy it! But first, we’ve got a ton of news! We talk about both the Bookscan and Diamond monthly lists, new licenses, lots of industry shakeups, and a few fun polls! There’s so much to talk about, it’s no wonder this episode ended up being four hours long! In fact, we had to cut stuff out of it so it wouldn’t run over five! Speaking of which, you can expect another Q&A Extravaganza focused on World Trigger coming next week! You guys have got a lot of listening to do, and you better start! Manga Mavericks @ Movies Month is going strong! We’ve been posting new movie reviews on our Youtube channel every day and plan to do so for the entire month of May! These reviews will also be uploaded to our podcast feed just a few days afterward. I’ve just put up our Ghost in the Shell/Power Rangers podcast, a pairing of two remakes of beloved 90’s franchises that weren’t particularly well-received. Check it out and look forward to more new @ Movies podcasts popping up on our feed this month! Of course, @ Movies isn’t all we’re doing this month! We’ve got regular Manga Mavericks episodes planned too, just like the one you’re about to listen to! This week’s episode is kind of a back-to-basics affair. Both your regular Mavericks are present, there’s a normal amount of news to talk about, and we cover a few recent Jump Starts and one-shots to cap off the show! A pretty normal episode compared to the past couple of atypical entries. Honestly, the only thing that’s missing is a Bookscan list to talk about, but I’m sure we’ll have plenty to say about the next one. Before you listen to the show, I want to emphasize the content warning for the Gerard Jones story. There are some extremely graphic details we had to acknowledge that should be sickening to any sane human being. It made me physically ill when we were discussing it, and then again when I had to edit it. If you can’t stomach hearing about sexual violence towards children, then please, you are better off skipping that news piece because it is extremely upsetting. But hey, this isn’t a dour podcast by any stretch. I mean, we got to talk about loop theory, kaiju that can shoot lasers out of its arms, and a talking house that can transform into a giant mech! It’s irresponsible to ignore real-world problems to consume entertainment, but our discussion of these recent Jump Starts was a nice reminder of how valuable it can be to have a good manga to brighten up a bad day. Editor's Note, 2020: As a consequence of Nobuhiro Watsuki's charges being dropped (as discussed on this podcast), we've since reevaluated our feelings on Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro's own allegations and are less enthusiastic and supportive of him and his work. We still feel our discussion of Build King is worth sharing, but we wanted to note that our feelings on this comic and its creator are more complicated and critical now. This podcast is very much a product of its time, and we humbly ask you to keep this in mind as you listen to it. Time Codes: 00:00:31 - Introduction 00:03:21 - Setup of the discussion 00:04:00 - The Dragon Slayer: Folktales from Latin America 00:27:07 - The Lost Path 00:47:59 - A discussion of the children's comics-related book market 01:10:32 - Wrap up 01:11:47 - Contact us In this episode of the Comics Alternative Young Readers Show, Gwen and Paul review two new releases, both of which have a connection to folklore and fairy tales: Jaime Hernandez's The Dragon Slayer: Folktales from Latin America from Toon Graphics, and Amélie Fléchais and Jonathan Garnier's The Lost Path from Lion Forge Comics' children's imprint, Cub House. Additionally, Paul and Gwen discuss Brian Hibb's “Tilting at Windmills #268: Looking at BookScan 2017,” an overview of comics sales that demonstrates that the children's and YA market continues to grow and that young people are getting comics in a variety of venues, from direct distribution at comics shops to major booksellers to Comixology. In Part I of the show, Paul and Gwen embark on a detailed discussion of The Dragon Slayer: Folktales from Latin America, a text that includes three short tales, “The Dragon Slayer” and “Tup and the Ants,” both written and drawn by Jaime Hernandez, and “Martina Martínez and Pérez the Mouse,” a collaboration between children's author Alma Flor Ada and Hernandez. The text begins with a short essay, “Imagination and Tradition,” by noted author F. Isabel Campoy that helps to contextualize the various fairy tales, or “cuentos” that have emerged from the diverse oral and literary traditions, which Campoy terms “a unique blend of Old World and New, spanning a continent across many geographic boundaries and cultures.” Campoy mentions specifically the Catholic, Jewish, Arab, and Moorish influences upon the Spanish, whose tales then encountered those of indigenous peoples from “the Maya, Aztec, Inca, and other Native American cultures.” At the end of the text, Campoy and Ada provide context for the three folktales, as well as a bibliography, and information on the authors. The editors at Toon Graphic have released a paperback Spanish language edition of the text, La Matadragones: Cuentos de Lationoamérica,” and Paul mentions the value of these books in dual language classrooms. Gwen and Paul then consider the way that The Dragon Slayer fits into Jaime Hernandez's long and storied career, and they mention both the humor inherent in the stories and the way that Hernandez's characteristic clear line style conveys characters' feelings and reactions. The fact that all three tales feature strong women is something that Paul highlights, noting that these tales provide a much-needed emphasis on girls and women who stand up for themselves and serve as problem solvers. Next, the duo talks about Amélie Fléchais and Jonathan Garnier's The Lost Path, a vibrant adventure story that includes references to classic fairy tales, Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, and Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Gwen notes the text's similarity to other contemporary comics in which young people pass through to a magical land where conflict is brewing – she mentions specifically Mairghread Scott and Robin Robinson's recently released The City on the Other Side (First Second) as an example, while Paul praises the text's style, from the gorgeous water color page-length spreads to the black and white sketches, which are rich in detail and artistry. The show concludes with Paul and Gwen discussing the rise in hybrid comics, as well as implications that they have drawn from reading Brian Hibb's latest report on comics sales.

Now, writer Joel Friedlander thinks that the future for Indies will include access to a technology that has traditionally been more … well … traditional. Is offset printing the future of indie authors? Friedlander thinks so. The tech is becoming increasingly available and accessible, which means some adventurous indie publishers are reaching out to use it, more and more. Of course, 99% of people, to completely make up a number, can’t tell the difference between offset and laser printing without studying both very closely, side by side. So is it worth the extra cost? Or will the cost come down to something affordable for everyone? https://www.thebookdesigner.com/2018/02/offset-printing-future-indie-authors/Washington Post is Evolving the Bestseller List — It’s been a complaint for Indies since day one: Bestseller lists often refuse to include sales results from sources such as Amazon.com, where ebook sales could skyrocket some lesser known and unknown authors well past traditionally published giants. The Washington Post is the first to recognize this for the error that it is. They’re revamping their bestseller list to include data not just from Bookscan, but from Amazon as well. What will this mean for indie authors? Are lists still relevant? https://lunch.publishersmarketplace.com/2018/02/washington-post-revamps-bestsellers-becomes-amazoned/Book Marks could be the Rotten Tomatoes for literature — Literary Hub is launching a new section for their site, called Book Marks, that is aimed at helping readers “find books they will love by giving them access to the critical discourse that is an essential part of our ecosystem.” That from John Freeman, LitHub’s executive editor. In other words, Book Marks will aggregate reviews from all over the web, and crowdsource readers to improve on recommendations. Will this help new and unknown authors reach a new audience? Daniel Decker is the CEO of Higher Level Group and an expert at platform development, book launching, and marketing for authors and speakers. He has worked with such notable authors as Jon Gordon, Michael Hyatt, Ryan Blair, Mark Sanborn, Crystal Paine, Allison Pataki, and Tony Robbins to name a few. If you haven’t heard of him, you have probably heard of one of the books he has helped launch. We talk about his first book marketing venture, and how he crushed it and moved on to creating even bigger launches and platforms. We also talk about the importance of having a team, and how self-publishers still need to get out there and hustle on their own. Daniel shares the importance of offering something of value when trying to find promotion opportunities. He also shares his past successes and lessons learned along the way. He talks about platform building for speakers and authors and more. He had an ad agency. His friend, Jon Gordon, wrote a book and they crushed it on marketing. [06:25] Jon had a 4-week Today Show segment with ways to get your energy up. Taking it national worked.[07:12] How Daniel focuses on relationship capital and adding value. He presented already researched ideas to producers which would help the producer as well as themselves for promotion purposes. [12:52] If Daniel can help better the world and feed his family it is a win win. [13:33] Daniel gets enough business by referral that he doesn't really have to market his services. [14:31] On the first launch the combination of everything was the key, but being on The Today Show really helped. They also ran a Dr. Weil ad. [17:44] Being a giver and meeting Michael Hyatt through his blog. He offered to add value to Michael's platform and proved that his ideas were good. [19:03] The importance of leverage and having a special landing page instead of an AWeber form. [24:00] Daniel takes every client as an individual and what their goals are before creating and condensing the campaign. [25:38] How it's harder for self-published authors to get on the New York Times list. Presales are important and distributing sales among retailers. [26:54] Having a 50/50 strategy between pre-sales and launch marketing. [27:39] Getting strategic with launches including using free books on the back-end. [28:59] How the NYT list is not only based on volume. They are subjective. [33:33] Methods for incentivizing offers and growing a mailing list. Using things an audience will perceive as value. [34:33] How people tend to devalue their offers and how it is surprising how well it does.[34:53] The importance of having a launch team. [36:06] How people want to help other people succeed and help spread the message. [36:40] Always offer something of value when you reach out. [38:22] Having a launch team with a thousand people. Usually, 60 to 70 percent participate. How creating a launch team is not shooting yourself in the foot. [40:02] Nurturing a launch team and asking for support and creating a net gain of book sales. [41:16] Not burning people out by communicating only things that need to be communicated. [42:18] Remembering that people are people and use your launch team strategically and be sure to engage with them. [45:50] Asking a launch team to read and critique the book. Asking for reviews and to buy a copy. Taking the team on the journey with you. [50:29] Partnering with charities and nonprofits as an incentive to get views etc. [53:01] Long tail promotion strategies include defining who you want to be and where you want to go. Do you want to monetize the book or promote your core product? [56:19] Having your book sales tracked by BookScan and metrics that publishers use to track sales. [01:01:19] Daniels plan for using a publisher for his first book and self-publishing for his second book. [01:05:08] Parting advice is to find a publishing plan and then act on it. Yeah the Sket Dance review is delayed again. Don't fret, we promise it'll come sooner than the final two books of A Song of Ice and Fire! So what are we reviewing this week? We don't know! I mean, we do because we recorded the episode already...but it was a total crapshoot before we recorded it. We literally just spun a wheel and picked whatever random manga it landed. So what did the Wheel of Manga choose for us to review? No spoilers - you'll have to listen to the episode to find out! As far as news goes, we've got an exciting Bookscan list to cover, discuss when Hunter X Hunter will come back from its latest hiatus, and whether Kirishin's contest to publish the world's first Christian light novel is a good idea. It's a pretty short show this week, but nonetheless still an hour's worth of quality manga discussion! It feels good to have finally released the Pokemon Adventures retrospective after months of editing it on and off. Doubly so after refueling my passion for the series upon flipping through the Pokemon Adventures artbook that Viz just put out earlier this week. It’s chock full of beautiful color art and illustrations from Satoshi Yamamoto’s entire run on the series, from the early GSC stuff to the recent ORAS arc. In addition to gorgeous renditions of the cover artwork, there are a lot of great colorized versions of iconic scenes from the manga that you can’t find in the regular volumes, which are a real delight. Even more so is the inclusion of the first chapter of the Pokemon Ranger webcomic Yamamoto drew back in ’06, which has never been collected in graphic novels before or translated in English! Yamamoto promises that in the next artbook, he’ll include more chapters, and considering that this story seems to explain what happened to Deoxys after FireRed & LeafGreen, I really hope he does so. This artbook was a real treat to read through as a long-time fan of the series and Yamamoto’s art, and I highly encourage every Pokemon Adventures fan to seek it out and support this release. Now, you might be asking yourself “why did he devote an entire paragraph to talking about an artbook unrelated to the content of this podcast?” Could it be…gasp, a paid promotion?! The answer my friends is…no. I wish I could get paid to shill Pokemon products. I genuinely just liked the artbook and wanted to let the people who enjoyed our Pokemon Adventures podcasts know about it. In full disclosure, I was approached by Viz Media after releasing the retrospective to promote the book in exchange for a free copy and I accepted. However, I had already preordered the book months ago, and I received it before I even released that podcast – over a full week before street date. So I’m being 100% bonafide in my appraisal and recommendation of that artbook. Jonathan and I are going to do an entire podcast about the evolution of Satoshi Yamamoto’s art because we love this series so much and want to keep talking about it. Unlike the Pokemon franchise itself, we haven’t sold out yet! However, if I had to shill for dough – and for a product I didn’t enjoy - I might very well not have a choice in the matter. You see, All-Comic.com needs money worse than a house pet in Kakegurui. Moving to new servers isn’t cheap, and we need a grand to keep the site afloat for another year. If we don’t get your support, we’ll need to put more adds on our site and start taking paid promotions. We even got an e-mail from some guy to run paid ads for his language-learning products on the show. Do you guys really want us to interrupt our podcasts to shill a product we don’t even use? You know what I’m talking about. You all saw how those Naruto Online ads ruined Mother’s Basement’s videos. Now we all start clicking away as soon as he goes into shill mode, even when there’s still half the review left! You don’t want that to happen to this podcast, do you? Then please, for the love of god, contribute to our GoFundMe campaign and keep this site and podcast ad-free for another year! If you don’t our next option would be to roll the dice on a big gamble and hope we played our cards right. That’s easier said than done of course, especially when there’s a lot of money on the table and it’s a high-risk venture. Kind of like the games featured in the aforementioned Kakegurui, the most popular anime of the summer 2017 season about a girl who literally has snake eyes and gets off on gambling. Unfortunately, those cucks at Netflix aren’t going to put it up until 2018, so we had no choice but to check out the manga instead. Will we go gambling mad over the series, or did we break the bank buying the books for nothing? Place your bets. Yo! Here’s how the story goes you find out. About a manga in Shonen Jump, there’s no doubt. The podcaster whose eye is on it he’ll say “I’ll be making a podcast, s’what I’m gonna be making!” So we set sights on One Piece, Eiichiro Oda’s monolithic manga that has been enthralling fans worldwide for over 20 years. To help us commemorate this hardy occasion, we brought aboard Sam Leach, a shipmate over at the One Piece Podcast, to help us make merry over our One Piece memories. During the course of our three hour reminiscence, we’re reminded how through it all - through all the troubled times, through the heartache and through the pain - we know that One Piece will be there to stand by us, just like we know we’ll stand by it. We are on a cruise, and have been for the last twenty years. No matter how much longer this journey may last, know that there is always room for you if you want to be our friend and join this adventure with us. Together we will find everything that we’re looking for. So come aboard and bring along all your hopes and dreams! Being a One Piece fan will satisfy them like no other manga will. Oh, and we talk about news for a bit too. It was a pretty great month for manga in North America! Lots of Bookscan representation, Berserk was finally made available digitally, and there were some great licenses from Viz Media at Comic Con! Back in Japan there was a controversy over Yuna of Yuragi Manor that we spend quite a bit of time dissecting, and probably will come back to as a broader discussion topic on fanservice down the line. It was pretty fortuitous that the One Piece live-action tv show was announced the week we recorded this so we wouldn’t have an awkward transition between topics! Editor's Note, 2020: This podcast was recorded before the revelations about Nobuhiro Watsuki and the subsequent failure to prosecute him for his crime. As a consequence of the Watsuki situation, we've since reevaluated our feelings on Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro's own allegations and are less enthusiastic and supportive of him and his work. We still feel our discussion of his comic essay about Eiichiro Oda is worth including, but we wanted to note that our feelings on this comic and its creator are more complicated and critical now. This podcast is very much a product of its time, and we humbly ask you to keep this in mind as you listen to it. In this episode, the Fanbase Press staff welcomes guest Brian McGackin (writer/poet - Broetry: Poetry for Dudes, Death in the Rick) to discuss the latest geek news stories of the week, including the latest details on the Han Solo movie, the recently announced characters that will be joining the Spider-Man cinematic universe, what the new Bookscan report tells us about the state of the comic book industry, and HBO's plans for a Watchmen adaptation.
What does the unprecedented six new Jump Starts in six weeks initiative say about the future of Weekly Shonen Jump? This week our friend Maxy Barnard of Friendship! Effort! Victory! joins us for his first "official" Manga Mavericks guest spot to discuss the state of Weekly Shonen Jump and the future of the magazine. We discuss opinions on what'll be the new frontrunner of the magazine in the wake of the multiple series conclusions of last year, what new series are worth keeping an eye on, the initiatives Viz Media are taking with the english digital version, and how we'll see Shonen Jump reinvent itself in the near future. It's an exciting and interesting time to be a Shonen Jump fan, and there's no better person to discuss it all with than Maxy! Plus, we run down the tsunami of new licenses Seven Seas announced last month, the imminent conclusions of several long-running series, the suspicious cancellation of the New York Times Best Selling Graphic Novels and Manga lists, and a whole lot more! Needless to say that after a whole month since our last regular episode we built up a ton of news we needed to cover on our backlog, resulting in a mega-sized episode we had to split in two! That's right folks, expect a bonus episode next week where we discuss things we didn't get to mention in this episode, including the results of our feedback survey and our impressions of a bunch of romance-themed shonen comics perfect for the Valentine season! Manga Mavericks was almost in a real crises this week folks. We normally record the show on Friday afternoons, but I was out on a trip during our regularly scheduled recording time, and Colton was too busy over the weekend to do the show on any other date. We had too options: either delay the show another week or two, or Colton getting someone to sub for me in my absence. Luckily, the man of the hour, esteemed anime podcaster extraordinaire Josh Dunham of Senpai Coast to Coast and Wave Motion Canon fame answered the call, and the fate of the podcast was secured! Then it turned out that they’d be recording at 7pm Friday night, and I’d be home by then, so I could do the podcast anyway. Which we could have just rescheduled to in the first place, making all our worrying for naught. Woops! But it was a happy accident, because while this was a short week of news, with our first-ever guest on board there was plenty to talk about! So join us this week as your titular Manga Mavericks and special guest dive right in to another two weeks worth of manga news, discussing the latest BookScan monthly report, the merit of the upcoming My Hero Academia spinoff series, and Oda’s claim that One Piece is 65% complete! Plus, Josh theorizes about the downfall of Bleach, and Colton postulates about what might very well be the worst manga ever made! The number 13 has never been luckier! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha, and Josh Dunham at @Josh_Dunham! If there’s something you want to ask that’s too big to tweet, drop us a line in the comments below, or e-mail us at mangamavericks@gmail.com! Thanks for listening!

Welcome to the third installment of the Manga Mavericks podcast! And before you ask, no, we still don't have a catchphrase. Alas, it seems some things just aren't meant to be. We've made peace with that. Well, at least Colton has. Sid's kept up at night thinking about it. It haunts his dreams. But hey, who needs sleep when there's such a wide array of manga news and tidbits to discuss! Join your titular mavericks, Colton and Sid, as we give a rundown of the latest New York Times Best Selling Manga and BookScan's Top 20 Graphic Novels lists, talk about the impending endings of a few pretty prominent series, and discuss Weekly Shonen Jump's latest Jump Start, Kimetsu no Yaiba! Plus, Colton convinced Sid to finally read Sket Dance, and they chat about the first couple of volumes, the noticeable similarities it shares with Gintama, and how shockingly sad a certain someone's backstory was! Who would've ever guessed a character with such a silly quirk would have such a devastating reason for it? Who are we talking about? Did Sid like the series? Does the title of this episode answer that question? Listen on and find out! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha. From the earliest days of human civilization, our ancestors recognized an important need. They had to communicate, and they set out to find a way. Their first "language" might have been a primitive system of gestures and grunts, but in time they figured out how to give names to the things around them. They spoke, they wrote, they left behind records of their history. All of these advances became possible through the invention of a device that we now know as "words." Cave drawings and hieroglyphics yielded to alphabets; the stone tablet gave way to the scroll, the codex, and then the iPad. And here we are. Words are our business. According to BookScan (an A. C. Nielsen company), American consumers purchased 751,729,000 books in 2010. That's very close to an all-time high (up from just 650 million in 2005), and it bodes quite well for the future of our business. Which reminds us of a song by the Oompa-Loompas in Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, about the glory days before the advent of television:How would they keep themselves contented, before this monster was invented?Have you forgotten? Don't you know? We'll say it very loud and slow:They...used...to...read! They'd read and read. And then proceed to read some more. Great Scott! Gadzooks! One half of their lives was reading books!
