We’re taking a short break from Shonen Jump-related podcast to talk about a creator celebrating a special 50th anniversary milestone – Go Nagai! 2018 is the 50th year of the legendary mangaka's career, and he’s seen a resurgence of popularity thanks to a slew of new anime based on his works like Mazinger Z: Infinity, Cutie Honey Universe, and most famously, Devilman Crybaby! To celebrate Go Nagi’s legacy and the renaissance of his work in the anime community, we’re discussing the original Devilman manga, recently released in the U.S. for the first time in a beautiful hardcover edition courtesy of Seven Seas! Joining us is our good friend and devilishly handsome Go Nagai devotee Josh Dunham, host of Senpai Coast to Coast of co-founder of Wave Motion Cannon! We go over Go Nagi’s career, what inspired him to write Devilman, and how his personal demons may have carried over into his work. Josh provides a ton of wonderful insight on the chaotic, anarchic mind of Nagai, making for one of our best analytical discussion so far! This podcast has literally been two years in the making – we’ve been planning to do a Devilman podcast with Josh since we first had him on the show all the way back in July 2016, so it’s exciting to see it finally come to fruition! Sit back and listen as we explore the macabre world of Devilman and gleam as many insights we can from its dark and twisted world. But first, we’ve got our usual news roundup to go through! We discuss the Oricon Top Selling Manga list, which has some surprising series making it on to the top ten! Then, we discuss the deaths of several manga magazines in print, and speculate whether this trend heralds the end for manga magazines in general. Plus we discuss a lot of new manga, new licenses, and new anime that we’re really looking forward to! Even though World Trigger has been on hiatus for a long time, the love of its fans remains strong. With the series celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, we thought now would be as good as time as any to re-read and talk about it! Joining us are two VERY passionate World Trigger fans and Osamu Mikumo stans - Annaliese Christman, letterer of the series for Viz Media and Weekly Shonen Jump, and Wensleydale Cheddar, host of the Shonen Jump podcast Stammer Stream and the voice of Osamu in Team ODA:R’s World Trigger abridged series! Either way, we had a long and fun discussion of one of our favorite series, and we hope you enjoy it! But first, we’ve got a ton of news! On this episode of Life Lessons, we celebrate our (late) 4th anniversary with special guest, Josh Dunham, from Senpai Coast to Coast and Wave Motion Cannon, as we start off the show with a lot of small talk, including the results of our first podcast survey and even an email from a listener (guess who). Topics of discussion for this episode include the urban legend of the Densha Otoko (Train Man) of which this arc parodies, critique of both the humor what direction this story could or should have went in, and more of Josh and Colton’s terrible in-jokes.Special thanks to all of our listeners and recurring contributors for making 4 years of this podcast possible! It's time for another episode of All-Comic Presents: Manga Mavericks Presents: Manga Fights sponsored by Geoff Martin Art Sales (not really)! Operating in the same fashion as Screen Junkies’ Movie Fights, Manga Fights features passionate manga fans debating it out over manga-related several topics both intriguing and insane. With the Manga Mavericks as your hosts, intelligent conversations, heated arguments, and unintentional comedy is always sure to abound! Continuing off our InuYasha 20th anniversary retrospective (well, we recorded this before that, actually), Manga Mavericks' resident Rumic World expert LumRanmaYasha faces off against sakuga guru and previous Manga Mavericks guest Josh Dunham on InuYasha-related topics! You'd think that Lum would have the home-field advantage when it comes to Rumiko Takahashi, but Josh proves a formidable adversary, coming up with a cast for a prospective live-action adaption of the series that will make you wet with excitement! Will Lum be able to defeat Josh, or will they have to change their name to LumRanmaRinne? Find out as we go back down the well with nostalgia for a jam-packed two hours of InuYasha discussion! Editor's Note, 2020: In this episode, Lum repeatedly refers to themselves with an epithet that includes an unfortunate slur. We were much younger and not as socially and critically conscious back then as we are now, and in retrospect, we find the use of this pejorative in a self-deprecating sense excruciatingly in poor taste and cringey. We humbly ask you keep in mind that the use of this term in this podcast does not reflect upon what we consider acceptable to say now. On November 13th 1996, Rumiko Takahashi's feudal fairy tale InuYasha began its serialization in Weekly Shonen Sunday, where it would continue to run for a nearly 12-year run. From the very beginning, InuYasha was wildly popular and successful both in Japan and internationally, and its popularity and influence on anime fandom are still indelible nearly a decade since it's conclusion. In honor of 20 years of InuYasha, Manga Mavericks' resident Rumic World expert LumRanmaYasha has recruited their brother and previous guest VlordGTZ to discuss the legacy of the series. We explore the origins of why InuYasha was created, how several characters came to be, and the history of InuYasha in North America. Then, we answer some Q&As asked of us by fans on Reddit, and discuss our favorite moments from the series, as well as commenting on Rumiko Takahashi's own. So sit, boy, and listen to us talk about everyone's favorite dog-eared half-demon. Don't worry, we promise it won't take as long as actually reading/watching the series! Disclaimer: You may hear a lot of sirens going off in the background of this episode. Let's just say the neighborhood I live in is always very noisy. Normally, we've been able to edit them out, but this week was a no-go, unfortunately. Just a heads up for those of you wondering what the heck that's about. I'm not watching any anime this season. I'm not watching anything that's airing on TV (except South Park). The time I have for recreation has become limited, and so the amount of what I can watch has become more select by necessity. I don't have the time to watch an entire season of Luke Cage on Netflix, or the four hour-long DC shows airing weekly on the CW, much less the dozens of new anime that came out this season. These days, after exhausting myself from long hours of work on little sleep, I'd rather listen to podcasts or curl up in bed with a good manga to read. Does that mean that I'll never get back into TV and anime? Not necessarily. I'm interested in checking out some of those things. Basically, I'll get around to it...someday. Luckily, you're not here to see us talk about TV or anime, but manga! And this week, the Manga Mavericks have A LOT to discuss. Not talking about news for a month will do that to us! So, as you can imagine, this episode is extra long as your titular mavericks, Colton and Sid, will be joined by some special guests and go over all the new manga licenses Kodansha and Viz announced at Comic Con, Takashi Miike directing a series of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable live-action films, MediBang's exciting new manga contest in collaboration with Weekly Shonen Magazine, among a plethora of other news! Plus, I dish the dirt on my New York Comic Con experience and meeting Yusei Matsui, and we have a lengthy and thorough discussion on Shueshia's new Dragon Ball-focused department, Dragon Ball Room! Do we think it's a good or bad sign for the franchise? Is Trunks' hair pink? Cause...it's blue in Super. It's super confusing. Super is finally being simulcast on Crunchyroll starting this Saturday, btw. Which I think is just super. It also makes our discussion on Dragon Ball Room super timely! Get it? Because the show is called...oh, just listen to the damn episode. Trust me, it's super. A new episode is out. Kind of a change of pace for this one. Josh Dunham stops by to the show and we talk about virtually nothing for the first couple of minutes. Then we actually start going over the why it matters to look closer at the things you enjoy. The discussion really goes in multiple directions but the theme stays the same throughout... Manga Mavericks was almost in a real crises this week folks. We normally record the show on Friday afternoons, but I was out on a trip during our regularly scheduled recording time, and Colton was too busy over the weekend to do the show on any other date. We had too options: either delay the show another week or two, or Colton getting someone to sub for me in my absence. Luckily, the man of the hour, esteemed anime podcaster extraordinaire Josh Dunham of Senpai Coast to Coast and Wave Motion Canon fame answered the call, and the fate of the podcast was secured! Then it turned out that they’d be recording at 7pm Friday night, and I’d be home by then, so I could do the podcast anyway. Which we could have just rescheduled to in the first place, making all our worrying for naught. Woops! But it was a happy accident, because while this was a short week of news, with our first-ever guest on board there was plenty to talk about! So join us this week as your titular Manga Mavericks and special guest dive right in to another two weeks worth of manga news, discussing the latest BookScan monthly report, the merit of the upcoming My Hero Academia spinoff series, and Oda’s claim that One Piece is 65% complete! Welcome to APOSS! This episode, Jack & Djm are joined by Josh Dunham, host of Senpai Coast to Coast and founder of the Wave Motion Cannon blog. On this special episode of Life Lessons, we focus our usual Gintama talk more towards the anime side of things, as Colton is joined by Doctor (SSAA Podcast and Just a Gintama Podcast) to discuss with Josh Dunham’s thoughts on the Gintama anime thus far. Josh is the host of the anime podcast Senpai Coast to Coast and the founder of the Wave Motion Cannon blog, and had started watching Gintama shortly after meeting and becoming friends with Colton. It has been a year since that faithful day, and now it is time for Colton and Doctor to sit down with Josh behind their microphones and see what Josh thinks of the series thus far. What are his most memorable episodes? How does he feel about the cast of characters? Does he like Gintama enough to continue with it and record about it again sometime? Well, you’ll just have to listen. Enjoy!
On this episode of Life Lessons, its our third anniversary, and King Recon comes on the show once again to help cover Chapter 66 of the manga, in which the Odd Jobs get a new neighbor. Afterwards, Colton talks about Lesson 66 in the Life Lessons segment, followed by an Anime/Manga Comparison segment of Episode 47 of the anime. The episode features an interview with Niente de Nada, the occasional ghost contributor to the podcast that Colton and Josh Dunham have mentioned and praised a ton in the past! She is also a very active member of the Gintama fan community who is seemingly the most knowledgeable of the real Japanese history that makes up the foundation of Gintama. The interview also features a few stories about a few different historical figures in which a majority of the cast are based on, so don’t miss it! Special thanks to Nada especially for coming on the show. This episode also marks the first episode to ever be released in two separate releases. Thats right, this episode was so long and so many people were asking for it, that it was decided that it’d be best to release half of it a bit early. The feedback segment for this episode was ESPECIALLY huge, so that other half of the episode (Part 2) will be released this Monday, April 18th, so look forward to it! We’ll say it again, but thank you to everyone for listening to Life Lessons for however long you’ve been listening, we appreciate all of your support and hope to keep this up for many years to come, now enjoy the first half of the episode! 0:00:00 Introduction 0:13:21 Manga Recap: Ch 66 1:00:29 Life Lesson 66 1:07:53 Anime/Manga Comp: Ep 47 1:32:00 Interview with Nada 2:50:06 The End (For Now...)

On this episode of Life Lessons, after Colton talks about some of the nice gifts he and his friends have received and who NOT to buy Gintama figures from, he and Sid (LumRanmaYasha, Cartoon X) recap and discuss Chapter 62-64 of the manga, finishing the Umibozu arc. Afterwards, all three chapter titles are discussed within the Life Lessons segment, followed by an Anime/Manga Comparison segment on Episodes 42 and 43 of the anime. Topics of discussion for this episode include some actual life lessons, why this story arc may be the strongest in the series so far, and just where Colton’s long forgotten Kagura impression came from. Enjoy! Afterwards, we learn of the competitive nature of ramen shops during the Life Lessons segment, followed by a divisive Anime/Manga Comparison segment on Episode 39 of the anime. Topics of discussion this episode include the handling of Ikumatsu’s character in both the manga and anime, Josh’s opinions of the first three pages of the chapter, and why Colton and Josh keeping throwing in-jokes all over the place! Special thanks to @joyofthejoui on Twitter for her insightful comments on this episode’s life lesson!

We also have a Life Lessons segment with a little bit of the religious background of Japan and an Anime/Manga Comparison segment covering the second half of Episode 37 of the anime. Topics of discussion for this episode include the difference between satire and gag, how many of the references a typical American audience would get, and how awesome Tomokazu Sugita is (if you didnt know already). On this special kind of/sort of/not really episode of Life Lessons, Colton and CJ Hitchcock join past guest, Josh Dunham, for an episode of his podcast, Senpai Coast to Coast, to talk about J-Stars Victory Plus. A fighting game available on the PS3, PS Vita, and PS4, with a roster filled with characters from different Shonen Jump manga series (including Gintoki!). Topics of discussion include thoughts on the choices for the character roster in general, what the game has to offer for Jump fans (let alone fans of Gintama) and how Josh apparently doesn’t like Ninja Scroll. Special thanks to Josh for letting us put this up! Go listen to his podcast, check out his blog, and follow him on Twitter (@Josh_Dunham) for his first viewing of the Gintama anime, along with whatever other shows he may be watching! Hopefully everyone enjoys this special bonus while Colton is away, but even with Colton gone, look forward to the next actual episode of Life Lessons!

This episode is proof that if you bother me enough on Twitter while I am at work, I will record an episode with you just so you can shut up. They say a picture is worth a 1000 words. I find that hard to believe, since this anime has no spoken words, and only a handful of ones written. But perhaps it's what is not said that gives this anime if flavor...and flavor is important in soup. See what I did there? As you may have seen advertised on twitter, this is in fact my birthday, and there's no better way of celebrating the occasion then watching an anime that is not only creepy, but perplexing. When in doubt, video games. Running with a full four man crew the OSMcast_!_ is BACK and talking about SCOTT PILGRIM. Vs, uh, I dunno, a bunch of stuff! We talk about the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, the movie adaption of said graphic novels directed by Edgar Wright, as well as the video game that adapts from _both _those things made by Ubisoft Montreal. That’s a lot of stuff! GET YOUR LINKS ON: Anime3000! Empire Building Architect Sean Russell is the man with the plan, and that plan is to have all sorts of podcasts and other sorts of crazy stuff for your perusal. From his A3K Panel and Bonus Round, Reverse Thieves’ The Speakeasy, and Josh Dunham’s Animēshon Podcast, there is a TON of stuff to listen to. A TON. (Also, a ton of links.) OSMnotes I GUESS you could go see the movies, but really the best thing you can do is get you some of those BOOKS. Most of the bi ol’ booksellers of the land should have them thanks to to movie, or you could just order then from Amazon. And sure, we have absolutely nothing to do with Anime Hell, but it's always, always a highlight of the show. And hell, the Scott Pilgrim website even has the first few pages up from each book to check out if you are so interested. Or you could not, I guess! THE CHOICE IS YOURS. And THIS WEEK. AWA. Anime Weekend Atlanta. MAN OH MAN. They even have a PDF OF THE SCHEDULE. It is filled to the BRIM with bombastic anime con panel goodness. And this year we actually are getting to help add to that gumbo of greatness, goulash of grandiose, guacamole of gloriousness. That anime con schedule of anime con_isity_. The gameplay is as good as the plot is generic. That's Ys! The OSMrenditions Panels of Power both happen on Friday. At 1 in the Special Events room in Kennesaw we’ll be having an Engrish Jamboree! Come celebrate politically incorrect racism as we laugh at Japanese people failing at the English language. Then at 4 in one of Panel Rooms (Galleria 104) we’ll be hosting the AWA Wild World of Sports (Anime). I bet you’ll never be able to tell what we are talking about! Of course, we _could _be making surprise appearances at other panels. Say for example at 3:30 on Saturday in Kennesaw there is a Podcaster roundtable, and we just happen to be a podcast! That podcasts a lot about anime! Hmmm! And also on Saturday earlier at 1:00 in Galleria 104 there is a Con DJing 101 panel, and we happen to have a DJ on deck, who tends to spin at anime cons… HMMMM. And, as always, one can never tell when Basil is going to assault random con goers with microphones. Good times!
Anime Festival Orlando is this week and we are going to be heading there. Expect things. In the meantime, here is another episode to make up for the lack of episodes last month.
