I sat down with Joshua Ralston to talk about his book Law and the Rule of God: a Christian Engagement with Shari’a (Cambridge, 2020). We discuss what lead him to this work, why discussions of law in Islam are missing in political theology (and why they matter), the problems of Protestant antinomianism, comparative theology and how recognising different conceptions of the law and its purpose assist interfaith work, and his account of public law as a provisional and indirect witness to the divine rule of justice Buy the bookCheck out the free course on Christian-Muslim relations Dr Ralston mentions at the end of the interview, produced by the University of Edinburgh. Joshua Ralston is Reader in Christian-Muslim Relations at the School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh and director and co-founder of the Christian-Muslim Studies Network funded by the Henry Luce Foundation. He has published widely on Reformed Theology, Christian theological engagements with Islam, Arab Christianity, and on political theology. His monograph, Law and the Rule of God: A Christian Engagement with Shari'a was pubslished by Cambridge University Press (2020) and he has co-edited two books, Church in an Age of Global Migration: A Moving Body (Palgrave, 2015) and Religious Diversity in Europe: Comparative Political Theology (Ferdinand Schöning, 2020). He is currently working on a monograph tentatively entitled, Witness and the Word: An Approach to Christian-Muslim Dialogue. Prior to moving to Scotland, he was Assistant Professor of Theology at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. He earned his undergraduate degree in philosophy at Wake Forest University, before going on to study World Christianity at Edinburgh (MTh with distinction), divinity at Candler School of Theology (MDiv), and Christian Theology and Islamic Thought at Emory University.Follow the show: @RinseRepeatPod // Follow me: @liammiller87

Shari'a Scripts: A Historical Anthropology By: Brinkley Messick A case study in the textual architecture of the venerable legal and ethical tradition at the center of the Islamic experience, Sharīʿa Scripts is a work of historical anthropology focused on Yemen in the early twentieth century. There—while colonial regimes, late Ottoman reformers, and early nationalists wrought decisive changes to the legal status of the sharīʿa, significantly narrowing its sphere of relevance—the Zaydī school of jurisprudence, rooted in highland Yemen for a millennium, still held sway.
Happy Friday folks! "Eighth Grade" hits theaters this weekend and I have Picture Lock contributor Richie Wenzler on to give his thoughts on the film. So in the spirit of middle school awkwardness and judging, I have a great line up of interviews for you on the show. I talk with the hilarious Melissa Miller-Costanzo of “All These Small Moments”. We talk about our love for people to be quiet and leave us alone during movies, but more importantly the well received film. I also talk with producer/director Robin Hauser about her documentary film “Bias”. In the film, she puts her own biases on display to explore the nature of implicit bias. Finally, I speak w/ Erika Cohn, producer/director of “The Judge”. The film explores revolves around the first woman appointed to a Shari'a court in the Middle East, whose career provides rare insights into both Islamic law and gendered justice. Plus I've got your answers to the Picture Lock question of the week two weeks ago after missing last week! February 26, 2010 This talk focused on the issue of domestic violence in Muslim societies in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The analytical framework was comparative, emphasizing four factors and the interplay among them: shari'a (Islamic law), state power, intrafamily violence, and struggles over women's rights. The comparative approach historicizes the problem of domestic violence and impunity to consider the impact of transnational legal discourses (Islamism and human rights) on local struggles over rights and law. The use of shari'a creates some commonalities in gender and family relations in Muslim societies, notably the sanctioning and maintenance of male authority over female relatives. However, the most important issue for understanding domestic violence and impunity is the relationship between religion and state power.
Title: Basic Facts About the Iran Nuke Deal Most people don't know where Iran is, let alone that the American government has sent Iran billions of dollars since 1953 for it to build nuclear facilities after the CIA overthrew its democratically elected government-- against the will of its people. There are interesting facts about Iran, especially from an historical religious and political perspective. - Shari'a law is the law of the land - Men can legally have four wives - The majority speak Persian - There is a significant difference between being of Persian descent vs being of Arabic descent - Babylon, Ninevah, and Ur, major cities discussed in the Bible, are in Iraq, near the Iranian border - Iran is part of the Levant - Most in Iran are Shia Muslims; the majority of Muslims worldwide are Sunni. Renegade Nation welcome to Bethany's Show on Renegade Talk Radio. What does it take to be on the national news and mourned in America-- being shot in a church? One Christian is killed every five minutes in the Middle East. Every hour 11 Christians are murdered-- by Islamists. In their own homes. In churches. Churches are burned. Mosques are built over the ruins where Christians once lived and worshipped. Do people know about the "purification of Christians" in India? The hypocrisy related to South Carolina is mind boggling: pray and bemoan over nine killed while ignoring Islamville, SC where Shari'a law is advocated, which requires Christians be persecuted and killed! Ignore Lyndsey Graham and others in Congress who are not only "allies" with Qatar and Saudi Arabia but have done nothing to stop the U.S. government from sending $12 billion to Iran where Christians are being arrested and tortured in jail for being Christians. Seriously. Wake up America. It's the black flag people need to get rid of. (* note the 56 people in Chicago, 23 in New York City, and 28 in Baltimore Bethany refers to were shot, not killed) Bethany's Home Page http://www.bethanyblankley.com
Welcome Renegade Nation Listen Up Not to demean the 9 killed in Charleston, SC, but why do American Christians grieve selectively? Do they not realize blood of millions of Christians are on their hands who die daily worldwide because their tax dollars, debt, and willful ignorance pay for it? What about the "Christians" who support Jeb Bush, who stubbornly supports Common Core, which teaches Islam throughout public schools? Or question his wealth rooted in generations of financial profits from war and their holy alliance with the Saudis? Public prayer for Charleston is no different than the pharisees who loved to pray publicly but did nothing about human suffering. Drive a few miles north of Charleston to find one of the only two Shari'a compliant towns in America called Holy Islamville. Wake up South Carolina. You have bigger problems than your street names or the confederate flag. Google pastors Saeed Abedini or Umar Mulinde or James McConnell. Those are just a few to "pray for." Or better yet for everyone who voted for or gave money to Lindsey Graham ask him about his love affair with Qatar and how much money he has taken from the very people funding and training ISIS, which is killing Christians. Thanks for Listening Bethany http://www.bethanyblankley.com
Islam, Phase 2: Lawfare and Shari'a Compliance Through immigration, the Islamists' goal is infiltration, procreation and implementation of Shari'a law through lawfare. The second phase of Islam is known as "defensive Jihad" and "civilization jihad." Organizations like CAIR are seeking to make state laws Shari'a compliant. To be anti-Islam is to be for girls' and women's rights. To be anti-Islam is to declare that Muhammad was a pervert. In America it is illegal to have sex with and marry 9 year old girls. Women and girls have human rights protected by the U.S. Constitution and Americans will defend the constitution against everyone who seeks to make it Shari'a compliant. Americans demand American laws for American courts. Thank You Renegade Nation Bethany http://www.bethanyblankley.com http://www.renegadetalkradio.com
Gone Girls: Sewn up and Spite Out, 9 Year-old Girl Commodities Following up on zoophiles who have contacted me and a legislator in Florida who wants to protect pedophiles. Then I discuss where pedophilia is legal and advocated: Shari'a law. Girls between ages 1-9 are kidnapped, sold, and bought at slave bazaars then married and remarried throughout Islamic controlled areas. Institutionalized violence against women as a “righteous act” is not extremism; it mirrors Muhammad's behavior and instruction in the Qur'an. Bethany http://www.bethanyblankley.com
In 2008, Sadakat Kadri began an intellectual journey that would take him to Pakistan, Syria, Egypt, as well as to his father's birthplace in Northern India, in order to better understand both the history and the meaning of Shari'a law. Kadri recounts this odyssey in his highly acclaimed 2012 book Heaven on Earth. In May, Kadri spoke with California Lawyer editor Martin Lasden. Professor John Witte Jr. Director of the Center for the Study of Law and Religion, outlines to what extent Islamic and other religious communities have the freedom to develop their own internal religious laws governing sex, marriage, and family.
Clifford Geertz famously described law as a form of “local knowledge.” In this lecture Prof. Messick examines the Islamic Shari'a as it was manifested in a system of local texts. He refers to a corpus of written work produced by a particular community of Muslim jurists and practitioners. Yemen, mountainous and agrarian, provides the setting; the Zaydis, rooted there for over a thousand years, the juridical community. Although his research in highland Yemen has spanned the last several decades, the readings he discusses focus upon a slightly earlier point in time--the first half of the twentieth century. Prof. Messick concentrates on this recent historical period to study a formation of Shari'a texts in the era of a classically styled Islamic polity.
In episode #016, Shaykh Yusuf Talal DeLorenzo discusses the screening process used by Islamic (Shari'a compliant) equity indexes and funds. In addition, Mr. DeLorenzo describes how a company deemed Shari'a compliant can become non-compliant and why investors not seeking Shari'a compliance could be interested in Shari'a compliant investments.
