Messy Family Podcast : Catholic conversations on marriage and family
Love is not a feeling. It's a daily choice, a habit practiced proactively. Summary What if intimacy isn't built in the big moments, but in the small ones you almost miss? In this episode, we explore the idea of bids for connection, the everyday ways we reach for each other through a question, a touch, a story, or even a glance across the room. We talk about what happens when those bids are noticed and met with kindness, and what slowly unfolds when they are ignored. You'll hear how responsiveness, presence, and emotional generosity shape trust, passion, and long-term happiness more than grand romantic gestures ever could. If you want a stronger, closer relationship, this conversation will help you see the simple choices that build intimacy over time. Couple Discussion Questions What are some small bids that you make that I may not always notice? What is one simple way we could turn toward each other more consistently this week? Key Takeaways Bids are everyday requests for connection. They can be verbal or nonverbal, big or small, serious or playful. Turning toward builds trust and intimacy. Consistent responsiveness creates emotional safety and closeness. Ignored bids create distance over time. Missed or rejected bids often lead to frustration, criticism, and disconnection. Vulnerability grows through small, repeated moments. Clear, honest bids and kind responses strengthen intimacy more than grand gestures. In this episode of Get Psyched, Lindsey connects her (slightly mischievous) love of embarrassment to one of the most influential relationship research programs of all time: the Love Lab led by John Gottman.Inside the famed Love Lab at the University of Washington, couples were observed to uncover what actually predicts long-term relationship success. The biggest predictor? Not grand gestures. Not passion. Not compatibility quizzes. It was how partners responded to bids for connection.Today the gals explore:

We continue The Return Series by rebuilding something many of us didn't realize we lost - the small moments. The everyday rituals, simple routines, and ordinary experiences that once made life feel like life. Remember when we had real hobbies just for the fun of it? Or when we actually went out into the world and had those quick, friendly chats with the librarian or the guy at the hardware store?Somewhere along the way, we traded all that "texture" for total convenience. Now, we've got everything delivered to our doorstep and we've turned our free time into a second job. If we aren't being productive or "optimizing" our day, we feel like we're falling behind. We've traded play for "projects" and joy for "billable hours." In today's episode, we're talking about why we need to bring back the "Sacred Waste of Time." We'll look at what it looks like to be a "regular" in your town again, why it's okay to be a total amateur at something, and how to reclaim those small, messy moments that remind us we were never meant to be this efficient.
Are you waiting for the "big" moments to define your parenting? Dr. Roger Smith introduces a powerful new family mantra: Be extraordinary at the ordinary. While social media often highlights grand vacations and major milestones, research shows that a child's success and emotional intelligence are rooted in the small, mundane interactions that happen before age two. From changing diapers and wiping noses to comforting a scraped knee, these daily acts of service build a foundation of security and resilience. Discover why the "mundane" tasks like folding laundry and playing in the yard are actually the building blocks of your child's character and capacity for greatness. This episode is part of The Things We Carry, a solo series shaped by the themes that stay with me after more than two hundred conversations on The Life Shift. Today I am talking about the small moments that end up changing everything. Not the dramatic events we can point to, but the quieter shifts. The split second where you choose something different. The small yes or no that later becomes a turning point. The thought you almost ignore until it finally lands. In this reflection, I talk about the tiny, almost invisible choices that shape who we become. The gentle nudges. The slow clarifying moments. The things that do not look important at the time but reveal themselves later as the start of a new chapter. Change is rarely loud. Healing is rarely obvious. Most of the time it happens underneath the surface, long before we can name it. If you are feeling stuck or wondering when your own shift will show up, I hope this episode helps you notice what is already happening inside you. Look for the little things. The small questions. The subtle pull toward something new. Those moments matter more than you think. They might be the beginning of your next life.

Over the next four weeks, Jason is sharing a series of stories that shaped him and the lessons they left behind. In this Coffee with Khalipa episode, he reflects on two moments from his time in the hospital while his daughter was battling leukemia. Neither story involves grand gestures or dramatic speeches. Just simple interactions. One with a family member. One with a stranger. Both left a lasting impact. These moments are reminders that you never truly know what someone else is carrying, or how deeply your words and actions might land. A passing comment. A small kindness. A moment of patience or awareness. They can stay with someone for a lifetime. This episode is about slowing down enough to realize that how you show up matters more than you think. Not just in big moments, but in the quiet, ordinary ones too.Sometimes the smallest things are the ones that never leave us.Thanks for tuning in to the Jason Khalipa Podcast!

In today's episode, on a still winter morning, a tiny frozen puddle becomes the beginning of a quiet moment of awareness I reflect on the beauty of our senses, how easily we overlook small everyday moments, and why career prestige doesn't always bring true fulfillment. Later, inspired by a powerful message from journalist Sami Hamdi, I muse about his idea of intention, sincerity, and the role each of us can play in addressing both local and global inequities. In a world connected through social media, our individual choices matter more than ever. This episode is a gentle reminder for me and you to slow down, notice what's around us, and consider how small actions and mindful awareness can contribute to a more compassionate, responsible way of living, choosing intention over indifference. Love and Peace Always, Amber xoxo P.S. If you'd like to support the podcast, please click here Thank you for your support!

The festival has since grown into an international phenomenon and has guided Amy into her current design career as the founder of the Blixa 6 Studios. In this episode, Amy and I talk about how small moments can lead to the most extraordinary ripple effects. I am here to remind you (and yes, I get emotional on this episode too), that every single thing matters and the small things and moments are amazing so treat them as such. In one of the most heartwarming conversations yet on The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, Ginny Yurich welcomes Leah Boden back to explore her new book series, Tales of Boldness and Faith. Together they dive into the life of C.S. Lewis, the power of stories to shape a soul, and the lingering beauty of a well-spent childhood. Through Leah's tender storytelling, we discover how ordinary moments — reading in an attic, conversations around a table — became the seeds of wonder that shaped generations. This episode is a celebration of imagination, slow living, and the unseen ways we pour into the future simply by living well today. If you've ever wondered if small choices matter, if storytelling still has a place in a noisy world, or if childhood wonder can linger into adulthood — this conversation will encourage you deeply.
