Douglas Murray, revered cultural critic and author, delivers the highlight of Ralston College's symposium of “Renewal and Renaissance,” a lecture exploring the theme of cultural reconstruction. Delivered from one of the beautiful, stately galleries of Savannah's Telfair Academy, the audience is treated to an intimate address that is both deeply moving and inspiring of hope. Murray's talk begins with the sober reflection that civilizations are mortal and share the fragility of life. He recounts how the loss of confidence experienced after the catastrophes of the World Wars led to the development of modernism, postmodernism and finally deconstructionism. The lecture then takes a more optimistic turn as Murray confidently asserts that after decades of deconstruction, especially in the field of higher education, we are now entering an era of reconstruction. He explains how this process of cultural renewal can come about through both the opportunities afforded by technology and the process of going back into the great literary treasures of the past, finding our place amongst these works and adding to them. Murray shares his love of books, describing himself as “not only a bibliophile but something of a bibliomaniac,” and expresses how literature, and especially poetry, can ground us in the world and make us feel that we are never alone for we will always have “friends on the shelves.” Traversing through Byron, Gnedich, Stoppard, Auden and Heaney, Murray recounts three powerful stories that reveal the lengths certain individuals will go to recover, preserve and transmit our cultural treasures. The talk was followed by a captivating Q&A session which ranged from the current status of poetry to the topics of writing, war and human nature. As part of the stirring introduction to the lecture from Stephen Blackwood, President of Ralston College, soprano Kristi Bryson performed Handel's Lascia ch'io pianga, accompanied on the piano by Ralston alumna and fellow, Olivia Jensen. A splendid performance showcasing perfectly the ability of culture to transcend the difficulties of life through the power of beauty. A reminder for us all of exactly what it is that we are seeking to preserve and renew. Mr Murray's books, including his most recent, are available here: https://douglasmurray.net. Fernanda Ralston, the visionary behind the "I Am Creation" movement, joins us to unravel her journey from the opulence of Versace runways to the serene elegance of her Botanic Hotel and Spa. Fernanda's inspiring tale leads us through her personal evolution from a world defined by brand names to one that celebrates experiences and authenticity. By drawing from her rich cultural exposure to Norway and Brazil, Fernanda introduces us to her concept of "post-luxury," a philosophy that champions sustainability, quality, timelessness, and originality over traditional material wealth. We explore the compelling intersection of art, science, and personal well-being, uncovering how holistic design and intentional rituals can transform daily life. Modern science like epigenetics and neuroplasticity supports the idea that our environments shape our realities, and Fernanda shares how busy professionals can create personal sanctuaries that reflect their aspirations. Through the art of establishing meaningful morning and evening rituals, Fernanda highlights the importance of nurturing a profound connection with our inner selves and our professional dreams.Fernanda's pioneering ideas challenge the conventional perceptions of luxury, urging us to embrace a quieter, more personal form of elegance that transcends mere monetary value. Her movement encourages a blend of voluntourism and global cultural appreciation, offering a fresh perspective on sophistication that intertwines personal growth and social consciousness. It's easy to not notice the routine 'state of the state' address Georgia Governor Brian Kemp gave, and the response from state Democrats'- by Senate minority leader Harold Jones Jr., when a MAGA hissy goes down in the hallway just outside the House chamber before the joint session. Naturally, that tantrum - and subsequent arrest - of state Senator Colton Moore got all the media oxygen and social media buzz. I mean, who doesn't love seeing a MAGA peacock get knocked down a peg or two, right? There's a whole backstory as to why Moore was the one General Assembly member *not* allowed in for Kemp's speech, so and I dove into that murky swamp water to catch ya up if ya care. Essentially, after former House Speaker David Ralston passed away, there was a commemoration with Ralston's family in the gallery and Moore thought that an appropriate time to slam Ralston for being 'corrupt' (and there's a story to that, too). Oh and there's the address and response from Democrats. For some reason, tort reform is the highest priority for Kemp this session, and I asked attorney and Georgia NAACP chapter president Gerald Griggs to explain why that's bad for Georgians.

In October 2024, New York-based Swell VC announced its second fund with $11.5 million in commitments. Co-founded by general partners Jay Patil and Rusty Ralston in 2011, the firm now manages two seed-stage funds and a special purpose vehicle with $19 million in assets. Compared to larger firms, they're small potatoes — but that's intentional. Swell VC is all about being hands-on: helping founders with critical early hires and go-to-market strategies. I invited them on Fund/Build/Scale to discuss their investment thesis, why diversity matters for building innovative teams, and how to know when it's finally time to stop thinking about your startup idea and start building. RUNTIME 42:09 EPISODE BREAKDOWN (1:36) Rusty explains how he and Jay met. (4:08) “ People determine the outcome of a company.” (5:36) “ You start the search when you're ready to hire. And then you build momentum.” (8:27) When Swell VC gets involved with founders, where they're looking to invest. (11:24) Jay talks about the firm's portfolio strategy and its second fund. (14:38) When it comes to early hiring, “ over the last 15 years, we've codified like all of our learnings.” (17:16) Where do founders make the most mistakes in the hiring/interview process? (21:43) “A big blind spot is thinking diversity is just about hitting certain metrics.” (23:15) “ We're all about finding founders to live on what we call ‘the edge of the inside.'” (26:39) “ No solo founder can do everything forever.” (29:14) “ You don't need to build a full team right away. Your network is kind of your first line.” (31:55) Signals that indicate a founder's ready to take the leap into entrepreneurship. (34:40) Why Swell VC is looking for category-creating startups to invest in. (37:34) Questions Jay and Rusty expect founders to ask during the discovery meeting. (40:25) How they prefer to be pitched. Universities today are increasingly plagued by ideological nihilism, bloated costs, and the growing infantilization of students with “safe spaces” and “trigger warnings,” says Ralston College President Stephen Blackwood. And far too many students are being funneled into universities as the default step after high school, he says. “We're trying to make universities the kind of catch-all for job training, and universities have historically not played that role,” Blackwood says.Ralston College is an attempt to restore a rich and transformative humanities education, one that ponders the deepest questions of life and that seeks out what is true and what is beautiful.“We thought it was necessary, at this time in Western civilization, to revive the conditions for human flourishing, to reinvent and revive the university and the fundamental role that communities of learning have played throughout the entire trajectory irreducibly in Western civilization,” Blackwood says.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

In this 251st in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this week's episode, we discuss how the Harris campaign spent their billion dollar war chest—including on celebrities who appeared to be endorsing her because they believed in her, but were actually getting paid. Also: $26 million was spent for “text message outreach,” any many people donated $10 or $20. It's reverse Robin Hood: stealing from the poor, to give to the rich. Related: how can we stay optimistic about unity, when we are seeing such different things? Finally: the New York Times finds a whole bunch of well-credential “experts” in nutrition to assure us that seed oils are excellent for your health. (They're not.) Aron Ralston is an American mountaineer, engineer, and outdoors enthusiast known for his remarkable survival story. His most famous ordeal took place in 2003 when he became trapped in a remote Utah canyon and had to resort to extreme measures to save his own life. Here's a summary of Aron Ralston's survival story:Trapped in Blue John Canyon: In April 2003, Aron Ralston embarked on a solo hiking trip in Blue John Canyon, located in the remote Canyonlands National Park in Utah. While descending a narrow slot canyon, a boulder became dislodged and pinned his right arm against the canyon wall, trapping him in a life-threatening situation.Desperate Measures: Ralston spent several days trapped in the canyon, unable to free himself or attract help. He had limited supplies, including water and food, and his situation grew increasingly dire. With no hope of rescue in sight, he made the agonizing decision to amputate his own arm to escape certain death.Self-Amputation: Using a multi-tool and other improvised tools, Ralston painfully amputated his right arm just below the elbow. The act of self-amputation was a harrowing ordeal and a last resort to free himself from the boulder.Rescued: After amputating his arm, Ralston rappelled down a 65-foot cliff and hiked several miles until he encountered a family on a hiking trip. They provided him with the assistance he needed and alerted authorities, ultimately leading to his rescue.Inspirational Survival: Aron Ralston's remarkable survival story became widely known and was later adapted into a bestselling book titled "Between a Rock and a Hard Place." The story also inspired the 2010 film "127 Hours," directed by Danny Boyle and starring James Franco as Ralston.(commercial at 7:53)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com
