Singer-songwriter Shishani Vranckx schreef met muziekcollectief Pyranello een eigentijdse Matthäus-passion. Ze staan zondagavond in het Muziekgebouw met Passie van Shishani. Shishani liet zich inspireren door componist Florence Price (1887 – 1953), de eerste Afro-Amerikaanse vrouw wiens symfonieën werden uitgevoerd. Haar werk werd goed ontvangen, maar ze raakte toch in de vergetelheid. Wat is er bekend over het leven van Price? En waarom grijpt Shishani met het herschrijven van de blockbuster van de klassieke muziek juist op haar terug? Singer-songwriter Shishani is te gast. Shishani gaat met het Pynarello ensemble door het land om de ‘Passie van Shishani' te spelen, meer informatie en tourdata zijn via deze link te vinden.

Diens muziek is een mengeling van soul, pop en indierock, waarin ook Namibische invloeden doorklinken. Die schrijft vaak maatschappijkritische teksten met diens ervaringen als zwarte queer. Naast muzikant is die ook muziekwetenschapper en schreef die verschillende publicaties over Namibische muziek.  Momenteel is die bezig met het toewerken naar diens nieuwe albumrelease die in september uitkomt! In onze zomerserie Verre Geluiden trekken we vandaag naar Namibië. Met muziek uit de hoofdstad Windhoek, de Kalahari-woestijn en reggae van Namibische bodem leren we de rijke, maar ook pijnlijke geschiedenis kennen van het land. Zanger en songwriter Shishani Vranckx legt uit hoe de kolonisatie en het apartheidssysteem de muziekcultuur onderdrukten. Maar Shishani vertelt ook hoe Namibiërs sinds de zwaarbevochten onafhankelijkheid met een indrukwekkende muzikale comeback bezig zijn. Singer-songwriter Shishani Vranckx brengt haar nieuwe EP Miss Catharsis uit. In haar vaak maatschappijkritische teksten verwoordt ze haar ervaringen als zwarte queer vrouw. Andrew is terug! Binnenkort start hij met een nieuwe serie afleveringen van Makkinga Meets. Maar komend jaar trekt hij ook het land in voor Makkinga Moves. Hierin bezoekt Andrew de festivals en podia, opzoek naar de verhalen achter de live muziek. Hij begint in zijn thuisbasis Groningen, tijdens de digitale editie van Eurosonic Noorderslag. Met haar muziek laat ze de grenzen tussen verschillende culturen vervagen en brengt ze mensen samen. Ze houdt zich bovendien bezig met grote maatschappelijke onderwerpen waaronder mensenrechten, sociale rechtvaardigheid, corruptie en het klimaat. Shishani shares her activism, her music, her single #Minority addressing racial, economic and LGBTQ discrimination. Shishani creates music with a message. Shishani is a singer/songwriter born in Namibia to a Belgian father and a Namibian mother. She left her motherland at the age of five and grew up in the Netherlands. In 2011 she started her solo career in Namibia where she has been making headlines the past few years. She won the prestigious Last Band Standing competition in Namibia, was a headliner at the Windhoek Jazz Festival (2012), and most recently her song "Minority" was nominated for Best Music Video at the 2013 Namibian Annual Music Awards. Shishani is an artist/activist who addresses and uses her music as a platform to address social issues. Currently she is working on her debut album and needs our help to bring her messages of equality to the world.
