In de Tweede Kamer werd gisteren urenlang gedebatteerd over de asielwetvoorstellen van PVV-minister Faber. Clara van de Wiel, adjunct-hoofdredacteur van NRC, vraagt zich af of het langdurige debat wel in verhouding staat tot de werkelijke invloed van de voorstellen. "Zo'n 95 procent van het asielbeleid wordt op Europees niveau bepaald. Nederland zit dus te pielen op die resterende 5 procent. Daar vijftien uur over debatteren, is dan volgens mij wat buiten proportie." Volgens haar is de kern van Fabers voorstellen duidelijk: "Het gaat om mensen sneller terugsturen en het beperken van nareis. Maar zodra media het alleen over ‘instroom' hebben, loop je het risico het frame van de politiek over te nemen." Sakina Elkayouhi, Journalist en docent-onderzoeker aan de Hogeschool Windesheim, ziet een bredere uitdaging in de journalistieke aanpak van migratie- en asielbeleid. "We verslaan vaak de agenda van de politiek, maar brengen te weinig wat die wetten betekenen voor mensen. Wil je een agenda-journalist zijn, iemand die gewoon het geplande debat verslaat, of een agenderende journalist die laat zien wat de daadwerkelijke gevolgen zijn?" Ook Sicco de Knecht, directeur van het Nationaal Expertisecentrum Wetenschap & Samenleving, valt op dat de menselijke kant van het verhaal onderbelicht blijft. "Wat ik meekrijg is vooral de vraag: gaat het CDA meestemmen met een milder voorstel, of de PVV met een strenger? Het is campagnevoering over twee wetten. Het lijkt vooral voor de bühne." In Nieuwsuur sprak politiek duider Arjen Noorlander van een 'asielprobleem'. "Ik bedoelde het niet alsof asielzoekers zelf het probleem zijn. Het gaat over het opvangprobleem, dat al jarenlang politiek onoplosbaar lijkt te zijn. Soms neem je in je redenering een binnenbocht om je punt helder te maken." Clara van de Wiel vult aan: "De wetgeving waar nu zo veel over wordt gesproken, gaat over een beperkte groep mensen. Maar omdat de opvangcapaciteit jarenlang is teruggedrongen, hebben we nu een structureel tekort. Dat is het echte probleem, maar lastig om dit telkens opnieuw te duiden binnen je verslaglegging."

British historian and author Mark Mazower discusses how the meaning of antisemitism has changed over time. In his latest book On Antisemitism: A Word in History, Mark Mazower traces the long history of antisemitism from its ancient origins to its many transformations in the modern world. The term was coined in the nineteenth century by Europeans who saw assimilating Jews as a threat to their ethnic-nationalist ideals. Ligt dat aan de ‘speciale leerlingen' of is het onderwijs steeds slechter opgewassen tegen diversiteit in de klas?De overheid streeft naar ‘inclusief onderwijs' in 2035. Dat betekent dat kinderen met een ondersteuningsbehoefte niet meer gescheiden worden, maar meedoen in het reguliere onderwijs. Tegelijkertijd groeit het aantal kinderen in het speciaal onderwijs al jaren.Als een leerling buiten de boot valt, wordt het probleem op dit moment – met een waaier aan diagnoses, van ADHD tot hoogbegaafdheid – al snel bij de leerling zelf gezocht. De jeugdbescherming in Nederland staat onder druk: passende hulp is vaak niet beschikbaar, gezinnen blijven te lang in onzekerheid en de wachtlijsten in de GGZ blijven groeien. Hoe krijgen we problemen in de jeugdbescherming het systeem uit?Ondanks de uitbreiding van de jeugdzorg, waar inmiddels 1 op de 7 kinderen mee in aanraking komt, blijven kinderen met complexe problemen in het systeem vastlopen. Kinderen worden van instantie naar instantie doorgeschoven, zonder de juiste ondersteuning te krijgen. In 2021 werd het programma ‘Toekomstscenario Kind- en Gezinsbescherming' gelanceerd, met als doel het systeem structureel te verbeteren. Begin 2025 trokken de Gecertificeerde Instellingen voor Jeugdbescherming zich terug uit dit programma, met als kritiek dat er te veel focus lag op structuur en te weinig op inhoud. Deze avond gaan we in gesprek met vertegenwoordigers uit de politiek en de uitvoering. Ter voorbereiding sprak de redactie van De Balie uitgebreid met diverse betrokkenen binnen de jeugdzorgketen, waaronder vertrouwensartsen, jeugdbeschermers en ervaringsdeskundigen. Ook speelde ze de hoofdrol in de Videoland-serie Bonnie & Clyde (waarvan ze de bedenker en medeauteur was) en was ze lange tijd te zien in GTST. Recent vertolkte ze een hoofdrol in de film De jacht op Meral Ö, een drama over de toeslagenaffaire en verscheen haar autobiografische roman Maskerziel. Daarnaast is ze op dit moment Honorary Fellow aan de UvA, waarin ze de uitdrukking van migratie onderzoekt in zowel literatuur als film. Op dit moment werkt ze aan twee nieuwe voorstellingen De stille vrouw – over de eerste generatie Turkse migrantenvrouwen, waarover ook een roman en een podcast verschijnt, en Leyla en Mejnun, waarin ze de vrouw een stem geeft die lang niet gehoord is.
