Any time you put the word “summit” in something, it mentally becomes bigger than you previously thought. A conference on steroids, in most people's minds. And when you do an ag-related summit in California, that notion of grandeur can be well deserved, even when you take away the size of the state itself. The sheer amount of agricultural exports that the producers in California send to other parts of the U.S. and the world is staggering. But there's another aspect to agriculture that is a huge business opportunity: Agritourism. If you've ever been wine tasting, done a farm tour, seen the flower fields, gone horseback riding, or sampled local cheese while sitting in your B&B, you're an agritourist. The 2025 California Agritourism Summit, put on by the UCNR (Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources), is meant to highlight the potential of agritourism for the producers in California. It's another way for our food and fiber producers to maintain self-sufficiency in these changing times. The wave is here, and California farm producers are ready to ride it. And this one doesn't have to be near the ocean. ****Spoiler Alert**** the novel “The Rosie Effect”, by Graeme Samson, the sequel to “The Rosie Project” is heavily discussed, and ultimately spoiled for anyone who hasn't read it in this episode.Today, our lovely hosts discuss, among other things, the 2nd book of the trilogy they read this past week. They both enjoyed this book too. Shanea initially wondered, prior to reading, where the author could possibly go since the first book in the series was so well-written that it could have stood alone, and she was happily entertained! This is another good one! Join us!
We've got an awesome guest this week. Joanna Schwartz is a professor of law at UCLA and the author of "Shielded: How the Police Became Untouchable". Just how hard is it to hold the police accountable when they violate your constitutional rights? First, you're going to have to find a lawyer, and that might not be as easy as you'd think. Second, you'll have to beat the odds by getting a court to hear your case. Finally, if you are successful and a judge does decide that you're owed a nice big check, where does that money come from? You think you know what qualified immunity is, but specifics are hard to believe. Joanna Schwartz ended up being one of my favorite guests we've ever interviewed and certainly one of the smartest. Her new book is fascinating, and you can pick up a copy here. Amazon.com: Shielded: How the Police Became Untouchable: 9780593299364: Schwartz, Joanna: Books Hope you enjoy this week's show. As broadcast April 20, 2023 with plenty of love, because that is The Message. Tonight we start on this date in 1974, when MFSB's "TSOP" topped the charts in the US, mainly on the back of being the intro music to the nationally syndicated "Soul Train" TV show with Don Cornelius. After that, there's a lot to do in the present in the funk and soul worlds, as Pete Rock, The Ironsides, Lonnie Liston Smith, and many other highly worthy artists were out with new singles to upcoming albums. After the clock went gong again, Dan Lloyd once again joined us to highlight what's new and interesting in the world of rock stars and smashed guitars, with highlights from Squid, Better Lovers, and Metallica to keep you sweaty and desperate to the bitter end.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)MFSB – Love Is The MessageLady Wray – Joy & Pain (Pete Rock remix)ENNY feat Loyle Carner – Take It SlowAllen Stone – MagicRudy De Anda – June Gloom (Smilin')The Ironsides - OutlinesPart II (36:02)Lonnie Liston Smith w/Jazz Is Dead – DawnWnbl – ContemplationBorn 74 & Onj – Don't Need My ShadowLITE – Endless BlueDragonfruit feat Hudson – Space TravelerRick Wade – The EmperorPart III (66:13)Better Lovers – 30 Under 13Metallica – Too Far GoneSquid – UndergrowthRancid – Tomorrow Never ComesMars Volta – Blank Condolences (Acoustic)Part IV (99:18)Militarie Gun – Very HighJethro Tull – GinnungagapCinema Stare – BadRoyal Thunder – FadeThe Breeders – SaintsDave Hause – Tarnish
As broadcast March 23, 2023 with plenty of candles to blow out. Tonight we start the show highlighting the birthday boy Damon Albarn, celebrating his 55th trip around the sun. Now a living icon, Albarn even if you're familiar with his big projects is a colossus in the studio and beyond, responsible for most likely far more than you know. After we blew out the candles on the cake, we got into our Sampled funk & soul first hour with tunes from DeRobert & The Half-Truths, Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Les Imprimes, and some refurbished live stuff from Elis Regina as well. Hour 2 we had a lot to get through as Dan Lloyd's local stalwarts of stage Malarkey are finally out with their debut album! We also had big stuff from Geese, Fall Out Boy, and Bouncing Souls along with more worship of Robert Smith, who is a true hero of the people.Tracklist:Part I (00:00)Tony Allen & Damon Albarn – Go BackDeRobert & The Half-Truths – Judgement (GED Soul Version)Dragonfruit – Honeymoon PhaseTinariwen feat Fats Kaplin – Tenere DenBella Brown & The Jealous Lovers – What Will Leave You BehindBrooklyn Funk Essentials feat Alison Limerick – Rollin (Love Will Be Here)Part II (33:45)Les Imprimes – If ILady Wray feat Ghostface Killah – Piece of MeBacao Rhythm & Steel Band – Hotline BlingFlavien Berger – JerichoOrions Belte – Lucid DreamingElis Regina – O Trem AzulElis Regina – Maria MariaPart III (64:49)Fall Out Boy – Heartbreak Feels So GoodBlack Country, New Road – Across the Pond FriendLemon Twigs – In My HeadGeese – 3D CountryKate Davis – Long Long LongPart IV (95:14)Bouncing Souls – Ten Stories HighMalarkey – Loose EndsTrophy Eyes – Blue Eyed BoyThe White Stripes – Icky ThumpDef Leppard – Pour Some Sugar on MeThe Cure – Friday I'm in Love

Chris and Jesse are joined by Crystal Patrick and Jenni Yoder from Global Gardens. Global Gardens is a local nonprofit that works in public elementary and middle schools to use a garden as a vehicle to teach science, peace, and to empower students to become agents of change in their communities. Through the gardens, students learn to work with their peers and think critically in order to solve problems and make changes. The program also encourages students to take ownership of their own learning and to take charge in their own lives. Global Gardens also provides tangible education, giving students a chance to get their hands dirty and be involved in the learning process. Finally, the program emphasizes the importance of sustainability and provides students with the tools to understand the environment and how to make it better. On top of that, Chris and Jesse make jokes about being outdoorsmen, Dragonfruit, about the story of when Jesse destroyed his dad's garden. To find out more about Global-Gardens check them out on the web: About | Global Gardens (global-gardens.org)We also want to recognize Tallgrass Estate Planning LLP, as they are the newest corporate partners with Rant9 Productions.
