Au Soudan du Sud, pays englué dans une grave crise politique et économique, la pauvreté progresse. Et presque mécaniquement, la criminalité des jeunes explose. À Juba, la capitale, les gangs de jeunes se multiplient. Source de subsistance pour des adolescents livrés à eux-mêmes, parfois même enfants des rues, ces gangs rendent la vie des habitants de plus en plus pénible, les vols et les agressions proliférants. Face à ce fléau, de rares initiatives se mettent en place. C'est notamment le cas dans le quartier de Sherikat, à l'est de la capitale sud-soudanaise, où un ancien gangster a créé une académie de foot, un précieux espace de bienveillance pour une jeunesse en dérive. De notre correspondante à Juba, Sur la grande esplanade du quartier de Sherikat, dans l'épaisse poussière soulevée par le vent, des centaines d'enfants et d'adolescents s'entraînent. Ils driblent, slaloment entre des cônes, disputent des mini-matchs. Les différentes équipes sont reconnaissables à la couleur de leur maillot. « Voici la Young Dream Football Academy. Nous travaillons avec les jeunes, la plupart viennent de la rue, et certains sont dans les gangs. » Alaak Akuei, 24 ans, que tout le monde appelle « Kuku », a créé cette académie de foot en 2018. C'était après avoir réussi à se sortir du gang qu'il avait rejoint en 2013, à son arrivée à Juba : « Les jeunes sont désœuvrés. C'est pour cela que beaucoup traînent dans la rue et finissent dans les gangs. Ce qu'il faut, c'est leur proposer des activités, pour qu'ils soient occupés et qu'ils ne décrochent pas de l'école. Le foot peut être très puissant pour lutter contre les gangs. » Sakaya Peter, travailleur social de l'ONG Gredo, qui travaille avec Kuku, pense aussi que le sport peut détourner les jeunes des gangs : «  Ces jeunes recherchent un sentiment d'appartenance, le fait d'être aimés. C'est la principale raison pour laquelle ils rejoignent les gangs. Dans ces groupes, ils ne se contentent pas de s'amuser, de se battre ou de voler. Ils s'aiment profondément et se soucient les uns des autres. En les réunissant régulièrement autour d'activités sportives, on peut leur offrir ce même sentiment d'avoir des personnes auprès desquelles ils peuvent trouver du soutien. » Ces jeunes, « ils sont le futur de cette nation » Lorsque Kuku a décidé de créer cette académie, il a convaincu six autres amis gangsters de le suivre. Ils sont maintenant entraîneurs pour plus de 900 apprentis footballeurs. Emmanuel Aman Malual, 21 ans, est l'un de ces gangsters devenus coaches : « Les gangs ne nous apportent rien, on peut même mourir. À l'époque, quand on était dans le gang, on dormait à la rue, on buvait et on fumait. On a fait beaucoup de choses qui sont mal. Mais c'est possible de changer. Je suis désormais une personne différente, et je ne peux pas imaginer y retourner. Tout ce que je veux, c'est aider ces enfants, car ils sont le futur de cette nation. » Sur le côté du terrain, à l'ombre d'une véranda en tôle, une vingtaine de très jeunes garçons se chamaillent, ce sont des enfants des rues que Kuku tente d'aider. Parmi eux, John, 17 ans, est à la rue depuis 2017. Il a fui la violence de sa mère alcoolique : « Je veux jouer au foot et aller à l'école, et être hébergé dans un endroit agréable, où je puisse dormir, me changer, vivre normalement. » Kuku leur a déjà créé une équipe au sein de la Young Dream Football Academy, mais il tente aussi de rétablir le contact avec leurs familles.
