Over the Counter Elk Hunting Stories with Mike Herne   Show Notes: Mike Herne is here for a little campfire hunting story session. Mike's an avid hunter and bow hunting is his passion, although he recently picked up a rifle and enjoyed it. The army is Mike's day job where he works in a professional development academy. In his spare time, he writes hunting and outdoor-related content for Black Rifle Coffee through their publication, Free Range American. Mike shares some of his favorite hunts and elk is hands down his favorite animal to chase with a bow. He grew up on the east coast sitting in tree stands looking for deer and the first time he heard an elk bugle and saw an elk, he was hooked.   Most of Mike's elk hunting experience has been in Colorado. He went on a cool trip last year with Aron Snyder and South Cox from Kifaru International where he called elk for Aron on a pretty awesome tag. Mike loves elk hunting because of the instant gratification you can get with bugling versus sitting and waiting for deer to show up. His first over-the-counter-archery elk hunt was when he was stationed in Fort Carson, Colorado. After a deployment, Mike took a couple weeks off to hunt. It was a tough hunt, and he shares some lessons he had to learn the hard way.   The following season, Mike went back out and saw some quick success. The learning curve he experienced during his first hunt helped give him a leg up. He learned a ton about bugling, including when and when not to do it. Mike shares stories about a filmed trip he took with Free Range American that showed the reality of the over-the-counter hunting experience. We also talked about the similarities between calling elk and turkeys, hunting white tail deer, and lessons learned about creating illusions with noise and calls. Mike's a great example of someone who takes what he learned from previous hunts and elevates his game the next season. What's Inside: Mike's first elk hunt and the lessons he learned. How Mike used his experience to find success in hunting. Elk calling and bugling tips.   Mentioned in this episode Phoenix Shooting Bags save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ GoHunt: https://www.gohunt.com/   Short Description: Mike Herne is an avid bow hunter with some great stories, including a great one from his first time in Colorado. Mike shares some of his favorite hunts and elk is hands down his favorite animal to chase with a bow. He learned a ton of lessons and is a great example of someone who found success from integrating his experiences.    Tags: big game hunting, hunting tips, hunting guide, buck hunting, hunting stories, elk hunting, bugle, Colorado, bow hunting, archery, over-the-counter hunting, deer hunting

On a stellar episode today Aron and Frank are joined by the great South Cox, they dive right many topics. Ranging from the essential skills needed to successful when hunting high country Mule Deer to a run down of what's new with Stalker Stickbows. You won't want to miss this information packed episode with one of the pioneers of shooting and making traditional bows! South Cox's interest in archery started at the age of five when he found an old wood recurve under a neighbor's house. Despite having no mentor and growing up in a vegetarian family during his younger years, the instincts of the hunter ran deep. At 16, he shot his first deer with a bow—cementing a lifetime commitment to the sport. In 2007, with 20 years of professional woodworking experience, South took over Stalker Recurves, reviving a company that had been dormant for the better part of a decade. Combining both of his passions; a profound love of woodworking and archery, he enthusiastically dove into the new venture. His keen eye for detail and diligent work ethic can easily be recognized in the artistic changes, additions and technical advances in the bow lines. In 1989, South's first bowhunting article was published, spawning a new career that would eventually have him published in a half dozen different archery magazines, contributing to a couple of bowhunting books and earning him a position as Field Editor of Eastmans' Bowhunting Journal, a position that he still maintains. In 2012, with the blessing of his wonderful wife, Kyri, after 25 years in construction, South decided to “retire” and take up bow building full time. Between writing and bow building, he is now fully immersed in the hunting industry—truly “living the dream!”   Did you like this episode? I welcome your interest in the most exciting and durable bow you will ever shoot.  Furthermore, I extend a sincere hand of friendship to those of you who share my love for a sport that reflects a profound respect for the great outdoors.  It has been my goal to create more than just a beautifully handcrafted and powerful bow. In this episode Aron and South discuss the gear they use and the real world experiences they have had with gear failing, from shelters to boots to sleep systems, all is covered in detail. ----more----   South Cox’s interest in archery started at the age of five when he found an old wood recurve under a neighbor’s house. In 1989, South’s first bowhunting article was published, spawning a new career that would eventually have him published in a half dozen different archery magazines, contributing to a couple of bowhunting books and earning him a position as Field Editor of Eastmans’ Bowhunting Journal, a position that he still maintains. In 2012, with the blessing of his wonderful wife, Kyri, after 25 years in construction, South decided to “retire” and take up bow building full time. Between writing and bow building, he is now fully immersed in the hunting industry—truly “living the dream!” Since 1987 Stalker Stickbows has integrated exquisite craftsmanship with a devotion to the sport of traditional archery. I believe that our customers are friends who are asking us to create a trusted hunting or shooting companion that they can rely on… a partner as durable as they are…one who will be with them for as long as they have the will and the strength to draw both breath and the bowstring. My bows are built to be as enjoyable to shoot as they are beautiful.  I believe that you deserve nothing less when the chance of a lifetime shot presents itself. In winter 2014 I decided I wanted to learn how to make a good outdoor film. I bought a computer, some editing software and some online tutorials. I started teaching myself how to make a movie. It didn’t take me long to realize I needed help. I stumbled across a 3-day film school hosted by the Full Draw Film Tour. Little did I know, this school would have a profound influence on my life and the advent of the Gritty Bowmen. On this episode of the Gritty Bowmen, I visit with a most excellent friend of mine, Grady Rawls. Grady was one of two instructors at the Full Draw Film School--Kody Kellom was the other. I drank from the proverbial firehose that weekend and I learned more about outdoor filmmaking in those 3 days than I had learned at home in the previous 3 months combined. But it wasn’t what I learned that would change the direction of my life--it was the confidence and the encouragement to follow my passion, given to me by the people I met over those 3 days. People like Grady, Kody, South Cox, Kristy Titus, Ty Stubblefield, Jason Phelps, Josh Keller and more. The Film School dumped gasoline on what previously had been just a spark of a flame. In the subsequent months, I began producing GRITTY content. And whenever I posted a video or a podcast and it seemed that nobody was watching or listening, Grady Rawls was ALWAYS there. He was a teacher and a mentor--but more than that, Grady believed in me and never stopped heaping gasoline on my fire. And for that, I am deeply indebted to him. Prior to this event, I had never met Cameron Hanes. I’ve read his books. I’ve watched his blacktail films and some of his hunts with Eastmans. I’ve seen him and South Cox chase high country mule deer. I’ve seen him hunt giant brown bear with dear friend, Roy Roth. I’ve watched Cameron stalk cape buffalo in Australia and on and on. And of course, I’ve seen Cameron’s social media game, which is pretty strong. But I’ve never met the guy. You hear and see things… And I can’t help but admire his drive and passion for fitness… and his love of the outdoors and of the bowhunting life… but I had never actually sat down and talked to him. And much like my first meeting with Aron Snyder… I found Cameron to be a super cool dude. Easy to talk to. Genuine. And funny. Much like my own hunting buddies.  I was able to hit the local Crossfit gym in Kentucky with Cameron thanks to our mutual friend, Dan Staton, owner of Elk Shape. Dan lead a room full of hunters from the ATA show in a great team workout. Cameron was in his element. He loves fitness. And It was obvious. After the workout, Cameron took a group of us out to breakfast and there we laughed and swapped hunting stories and I couldn’t help... but think how it felt just like elk camp with my own buddies. At the end, he paid the bill. And I walked away from the experience thinking, I just like hunters. They’re cool people. And there is an instant brotherhood among us as long as we are able to keep our massive egos in check and be positive.   http://www.cameronhanes.com https://www.facebook.com/camhanes/ https://www.instagram.com/cameronrhanes/?hl=en

"In a way... it's almost like life. You can take lessons you learn in the field and apply them to life and vice versa. There is so much you can learn with a bow in your hand." -- South CoxI just returned from a weekend scouting trip with my 12-year old daughter and my niece. Camping and hiking with them in the wilderness, sitting by the campfire and swimming in a cold mountain stream was rejuvenating. It felt good to get away from the pavement and the city and enjoy the outdoors. And for some reason, my scouting trip this weekend had me thinking about this film with South. I have fond memories of this visit to Stalker Stickbows. From the first moment I met South I liked him. We met at the Full Draw Film School in April 2014. My wife was diagnosed with cancer not long after that and South would PM me on Facebook every now and then to see how she was doing. South barely even knew me then. It was a very kind thing to do. Anyway, tonight I was just thinking about life and my kids and the peace I feel in the outdoors and it got me thinking about some of the things South talks about in this video so I had to come home and watch it again. I'm glad I did. If you haven't seen this film, take a minute and slow down. Set aside some quiet time and grab a cup of tea or whatever you like to drink and sit back and watch. Maybe South will inspire you to try your hand had a traditional bow. But if he doesn't, I hope his words and his views get you thinking about spending more of your time connected to nature instead of technology. Stay gritty.Brian Call

That’s it for EPISODE 4 of the Gritty Bowmen podcast. Part 2 of Are you a Stalker? Stalking Monster Mule Deer w/South Cox & Stalker Stickbows.  I got a lot of information out of these two podcasts with South on how to kill a monster mule deer. In summary, South explained the need to have a positive attitude and Mental Toughness. Another key to his success is that South gets remote with a focus on wilderness areas. And South looks for hunting grounds with what he calls “Micro Topography” .South likes to stalk from above. This helps him with wind. Because deer bedded on hillsides tend to face downhill and therefore don’t see you coming. South also finds it easier to sneak in on the animal from above when you need to stay low or crawl. Unlike some hunters, South likes to wait until the animal beds down before he stalks his deer. South recommends buying the best glass you can afford. South stressed the importance of mounting your binoculars to a tripod. And when glassing, don’t just glass from the main ridgeline. Walk out on the finger-ridges that branch off the main ridge line and glass to the end of the finger ridge. South likes lightweight boots that have soft soles—he finds them quieter and they help him when hopping through a boulder field. He mentioned Solomon boots, the Lowa Zephyr, Lowa Renegade, and one of his favorites, the Ahnu Elk Ridge Mid. At 70 to 100 yards from his quarry, South sheds his boots and dons a thick pair of socks to silently close the distance. But he recommends marking the location of your boots somehow so you don’t lose your boots. And South likes Smoke in a Bottle brand wind checker. South carries 3 things in his front right pocket. These two guys are the engine that run the Full Draw Film Tour. Now... some of you may be asking, “what is the Full Draw Film Tour?” To quote the Gritty Scotsman, “If you donn’a know what the tour is, you need to climb out from under the rock you been livin’ under and listen to this podcast.”    In this podcast you’ll learn all about the Full Draw Film Tour. You’ll learn about Jon and Kody’s vision behind it. As Kody said: “Our goal with the FDFT is to capture them, move them, and change them.” You’ll hear Kody and Jon’s opinion on the 3 ingredients that make a good film based on their combined years of experience running the tour and literally observing nearly 100 different audiences--learning what they like, what captures them, what moves them and what changes them.   I first met Kody at the FDF School. Where I met South Cox, Kristy Titus, Born and Raised Outdoors, Joe Sanchez, Grady Rawls, Walt Ramage and more. We were put into teams of 3 and I was grouped with Kristy Titus and Josh Keller who were a TON of fun. And these people inspired me. And for this reason and many more, I have a special affection for this tour and these guys. It’s undeniable that the Full Draw Film Tour has had a huge impact on my life. So it was pleasure to sit and talk to Jon and Kody about the tour. To hear about the money they’ve raised for charities like hunt of a lifetime and Wishes for Warriors.
