Tonight, for our monthly Snoozecast+ Deluxe episode, we'll read the tale “Old Pipes and the Dryad” by Frank R. Stockton and published in 1894. Stockton was a popular American writer best known for his whimsical and gently satirical fairy tales. His most famous story, “The Lady, or the Tiger?”, posed a famously unsolvable riddle and brought him wide acclaim. But many of his lesser-known tales, like tonight's, are just as imaginative and charming. Stockton often gave mythological or magical elements a lighthearted twist, grounding them in everyday human kindness or folly. In classical mythology, a dryad is a tree spirit or nymph—typically female—who is bound to a particular tree, often an oak. The Greeks believed dryads were shy and long-lived, emerging only when their tree was especially old or under threat. Over time, the dryad became a symbol of the forest itself—an embodiment of nature's quiet, watchful presence. — read by 'N' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! ACOFAE Podcast Presents: Series Fatigue: The Dryad Storm by Laurie Forest Being excited about a new release can be scary. Being excited about a new release that is ALSO the conclusion to the series is another level of excited/scary. When that new release that is also the conclusion of the series then turns out to be a DNF for BOTH Laura Marie and Jessica Marie, then the question becomes? Was it them? or Is it really that bad? The Black Witch Chronicles comes to an end with The Dryad Storm, the book that was such a DNF that is sparked a question about fatigue and the willingness to journey through the slog. How much is the reader's time worth? When do you take ownership of your reading and acknowledge that you are not having fun? What other series suffer from series fatigue? If any? All that and more is discussed as ACOFAE Laura and ACOFAE Jessica pinpoint where the series lost them and why. "Anything for the pod, but not this." How can cutting-edge technology help combat one of the most devastating contributors to climate change? In today's episode of Tech Talks Daily, I speak with Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO and co-founder of Dryad Networks, to explore the innovative solutions his company is bringing to wildfire detection and forest health monitoring. Dryad's groundbreaking “Internet of Trees” uses AI-powered sensors, solar energy, and IoT networks to address the challenges of forest management on a global scale. Carsten shares the inspiration behind Dryad Networks, which stemmed from the catastrophic 2018 wildfires and his drive to tackle the staggering statistic that wildfires account for up to 20% of global CO2 emissions. We dive into the technology powering Dryad's solutions, including small, solar-powered gas sensors that act as "electronic noses," detecting wildfire indicators like hydrogen and carbon monoxide far earlier than traditional methods. These sensors, supported by AI and machine learning, operate on edge computing to provide ultra-early detection even in the most remote areas. Beyond wildfire prevention, Carsten explains how the technology is transforming forest management. From soil moisture monitoring and illegal logging prevention to tree growth tracking and CO2 sequestration measurement, the possibilities of Dryad's network extend far beyond fire detection. With their recent strategic partnership with Kinéis, Dryad is now integrating satellite connectivity to expand deployment into previously unreachable regions. As we discuss the future, Carsten outlines Dryad's ambitious goal to prevent 3.9 million hectares of forest from burning by 2030, saving an estimated 1.7 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions. This conversation underscores the power of AI and IoT in addressing pressing global issues and highlights the potential of technology to drive real-world impact. What role do you think technology like this will play in combating climate change? Can AI and IoT truly transform how we protect and manage our forests? Share your thoughts and join the conversation!

Dryad Networks, a pioneer in ultra-early wildfire detection technology, announced a major financial boost to advance its wildfire prevention solutions. The company has been awarded a €3.8 million grant from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), via Investitionsbank des Landes Brandenburg (ILB), to accelerate the development of its revolutionary wildfire suppression project, codenamed "Florian." This significant grant will drive the development of an autonomous drone-based system designed to combat wildfires at their inception. In addition to the ILB grant, Dryad Networks has secured €2.5 million in funding from First Imagine!, a leading climate-tech investor. This brings the total raised from its April convertible financing round to €8.9 million. The new capital injection positions Dryad to scale its Silvanet wildfire detection platform while driving forward the development of Florian, an innovative solution that combines AI-driven early detection with immediate suppression capabilities. "We are thrilled to receive this substantial funding from ILB, which will significantly advance our 'Florian' project," said Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO and co-founder of Dryad Networks. "Combining this with the new investment from First Imagine Ventures, we are well-positioned to revolutionize wildfire management. Our vision is not only to detect wildfires at their earliest stages but also to suppress them quickly, minimizing damage to communities, ecosystems and infrastructure." Boris Dorin, partner at First Imagine!, commented, "Dryad's groundbreaking approach to wildfire detection and suppression is exactly the type of transformative technology we seek to support. As wildfires grow in intensity and frequency due to climate change, the need for scalable, proactive solutions has never been more urgent. We are excited to partner with Dryad Networks in their mission to protect critical ecosystems and build a more resilient, sustainable future." Building upon the success of the Silvanet system, which uses solar-powered, AI-driven networks to detect the early signs of wildfires, Dryad Networks is now developing Florian to swiftly and effectively suppress these fires. Using an autonomous drone fleet equipped with innovative fire suppression technology, such as acoustic waves, Florian is designed to extinguish wildfires before they have a chance to spread. These drones will be permanently stationed in high-risk forests, ensuring a rapid response to potential threats. Dryad Networks' participation as a finalist in the XPRIZE Wildfire Competition with their Florian project underscores the urgent need for innovative solutions to address the escalating threat of wildfires worldwide. As extreme wildfires continue to cause billions of euros in damage and wreak havoc on fragile ecosystems, new technologies are becoming increasingly vital for early detection and suppression. The company remains committed to advancing its technology, expanding its network of deployed sensors, and forging strategic partnerships to enhance wildfire management and resilience efforts globally. Dryad's core product, Silvanet, is already deployed in over twenty countries across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australasia with 20,000 sensors shipped to date. Anne Shirley faces the heart-wrenching reality of parting ways with her cherished friend Diana Barry, due to a misunderstanding that Diana's mother refuses to overlook. The chapter intricately portrays Anne's deep emotional world, highlighting her innate capacity for melodrama and her intense loyalty to Diana. Their bittersweet farewell by the Dryad's Bubble, complete with a gift of a lock of Diana's hair, underlines the Victorian era's romanticized friendships and the deep bond the two girls share. Amidst this emotional upheaval, Anne finds a semblance of solace in returning to school, though under the shadow of this strained friendship. Here, L.M. Montgomery deftly navigates the transition from despair to a determined thrust towards education, which serves both as a distraction and a battlefield for Anne's vibrant spirit, especially in her rivalry with Gilbert Blythe. This chapter not only underscores themes of friendship and reconciliation but also cleverly uses Anne's school experiences as a device to explore her complex feelings and burgeoning identity, making it a turning point that adds new layers to Anne's journey through adolescence. As Anne forges ahead, her dramatic flair and the richness of her imaginative world do not diminish but rather evolve, shaping her into a character that continues to resonate with readers for her resilience and her impassioned embrace of life.

Ok, this may sound silly. This is something you don't know about me, but I love Narnia, C.S. Lewis' “the chronicles of Narnia”, while I will be the first to say there is some problematic language in some of the books, I love those books. The really do communicate something very deep, something bigger than a story of children stumbling into another world. I saw a quote earlier from Mahmoud Darwish that said “if the olive trees knew the hands that planted them their oil would become tears”. I thought about that…amidst so much human suffering, nature also suffers, all parts of nature. And then this passage from “the Last Battle”, the last book in the series came into my mind, so much so I actually got up and ran to find the book and when I opened the book, I came exactly to the page I was looking for. That's when I knew I needed talk about this! This is going to be a show of a lot of unexpected connections! cover image: The Last Battle (full-color collectors edition) by C.S Lewis --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/anani-kaike/message

The podcast discusses innovative solutions to combat wildfires, which are becoming increasingly common due to climate change. Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Dryad Networks talk about early detection technology and how it can be used to prevent the spread of wildfires. They also discuss the need for collaboration among inventors, visionaries, and founders to develop solutions to the problem. Carsten suggest combining ultra-early detection with an automated response system, such as a drone that can detect and put out a fire within 10 minutes. They also talk about the importance of battery life and payload capacity for drones to make them effective in preventing wildfires Show notes: One of the key advantages of Dryad's technology is its ability to detect fires during the smoldering phase, which can last for several hours before an open flame erupts. This phase is often difficult to detect with traditional methods, such as satellite images or cameras. Dryad's sensors can detect fires during this phase, preventing them from becoming large and dangerous. Carsten has a wealth of experience in the telecommunications industry, having worked on LTE, 4G networks, mobile email, and synchronization over the past 25 years. He has used this experience to create a technology that can make a real difference in preventing wildfires and protecting our forests. Thank you for joining us on the journey of fighting wildfires. We understand that we are in a constant battle with mother nature and things seem hopeless when we have to evacuate, leave our homes and not know what we will come back to. On our podcast, we bring experts to educate homeowners, communities, and businesses on what they can do against wildfires. Our team consists of wildfire prevention specialists, retired fire captains, and fire marshals. If you're trying to get educated, find a solution to the wildfires, and do everything you can for your property then you have arrived at the right place!
