Muley Hunting with Richie Wilhelm Show Notes: Richie Wilhelm joins me for a little storytelling session, and I pick his brain on a few things. Richie owns and operates a small residential construction company in the La Crosse area of Wisconsin. He began the business around 15 years ago, and although self-employment comes with challenges, it's allowed Richie to get the time off he needs around hunting season. We kick things off by talking about Arizona deer hunting and how the weather impacts herds. Richie had two mule deer tags this year in different states, and he killed two of his top three ever. He had two bad years of chasing whitetails, but his muley chase paid off. We talk about spotting and stalking whitetails and which states are best for sitting in a tree stand. Richie shares the story of the first muley buck he shot back in September. He had ten days on a solo trip and hunted an area that he had some intel on. He finally got him from around 59 yards away and hit the buck in the shoulder. Unfortunately, Richie lost him, but tried again and headed back out about a month later. After a bunch of trials and tribulations and a storm thrown in, he finally got him and felt like he was on cloud nine. (Lander, WY)- This is a special edition of the County 10 Podcast featuring myself, Charene Herrera, RadCast Outdoors Podcast hosts David Merrill and Patrick Edwards, Blake Fegler and Rowdy Anderson with Muley Fanatic Foundation. Plus our special guest who is first and foremost a father, and husband but also a world famous outdoor legend who has traveled the world hunting and learning other cultures. He has become an icon that has spanned multiple continents and he came to Wyoming for a very special visit, Jim Shockey! Blake Fegler, Rowdy Anderon, Jim Shockey, Patrick Edwards, Charene Herrera, David Merrill I believe if you have celebrity status you should use your voice for bettering the world and that is what Jim is doing. As we try to unite and understand, learn and grow, Jim has spent many decades traveling the world and really seeing different cultures, tribes, lands, lives, thoughts and ways of life. He is a great role model and leader in this field. He consistently brings back the message of us all being the same and on the same team. Check out this fun, laid back, informative and Wyoming style podcast with the legendary Jim Shockey. One of my favorite lines in this podcast is from Jim "hunting is only a tiny tiny bit about killing something, it's everything else and family is such a big part of that. Humor, adventure, culture. That's what makes up hunting.. the elements." He has such a calm charisma about him. As we approach 45 minutes into the podcast... I just had to get something off my chest. This man who is so iconic and cool, I wanted to know why he doesn't fly fish? Jim tells me exactly what he thinks of fly fishing and how he prefers to fish. I hope to see Jim with a fly rod in hand one day! I also highly encourage you if you are ever in British Columbia to go to his "Hands of Man Museum" which I will include a map link at the end of this story. A free, self guided tour with video descriptions around a 17,000 square foot museum. Some call him "the worlds most interesting man" and you get to see why in this museum. 'Call Me Hunter' is the title of Jim's novel which is out in October of this year but you can preorder now. Even though it is classified as a fiction book you can chalk it up to basically being an autobiography about Jim's life. 80 percent fact and the other 20 percent "had to be left out or he may get in trouble", he said while laughing. Pre Order 'Call Me Hunter' The Muley Fanatic Foundation is the reason Jim Shockey was in Lander to help promote the conservation of mule deer in Wyoming. They had their big banquet which boasted a lot of fun moments, and opportunities. One of the best moments of the night was when we were blessed with a video presentation on the " Putting the U in Hunt" program and graced with a beneficiary of the program in attendance for the banquet. The MFF uses their Wyoming complimentary Commissioner Licenses to take youth with life-threatening illnesses hunting. Adlyn Even is one of this year's hunters for the "Putting the U in Hunt" program. You may remember her when she had the opportunity to be a Junior Reporter for the Denver Broncos. The foundation is working to fund projects that help protect and preserve mule deer across their service area. The project that this chapter is raising money for is for a wildlife crossing near Dubois Wyoming. There are a lot of deer killed on that stretch of highway and the chapter is hoping to help raise money towards installing high fence to funnel the deer into a wildlife crossing to keep them off of the highways. Today I'm joined by Keith Ward from Alberta Canada. Keith is certainly an experienced hunter, but decided to try his hand at hunting mule deer for the first time last year. Radio: The radio program initially aired on the Blue Network (later known as ABC) from January 16, 1944, to July 8, 1945, it then moved to NBC, where it was broadcast from September 8, 1945, to June 29, 1951. Irving Brecher pitched the radio series for friend Groucho Marx under the title The Flotsam Family, but the sponsor balked at what would have been essentially a straight head-of-household role for Marx. (Marx would get his own series Blue Ribbon Town instead.) Brecher then saw William Bendix as taxicab company owner Tim McGuerin in Hal Roach's The McGuerins from Brooklyn (1942). Radio historian Gerald Nachman quotes Brecher as stating, "He was a Brooklyn guy and there was something about him. I thought this guy could play it. He'd made a few films, like Lifeboat, but he was not a name. So, I took The Flotsam Family script, revised it, made it a Brooklyn Family, took out the flip-flippancies and made more meat-and-potatoes, and thought of a new title, The Life of Riley. Bendix's delivery and the spin he put on his lines made it work." The reworked script cast Bendix as blundering Chester A. Riley, a wing riveter at the fictional Cunningham Aircraft plant in California. His frequent exclamation of indignation—"What a revoltin' development this is!"—became one of the most famous catchphrases of the 1940s. It was later reused by Benjamin J. Grimm of the Fantastic Four. The radio series also benefited from the immense popularity of a supporting character, Digby "Digger" O'Dell (John Brown), "the friendly undertaker." Brecher told Brown, "I want a very sepulchral voice, quavering, morbid," and he got it right away.

This conversation focuses on our last ditch effort to fill Zach's Montana Mule Deer tag. When you set big goals for yourself and have high expectations there is always a chance you might fall short. That said, it doesn't mean you lost. With the right mindset we discuss how you can take these setbacks and learn from them. We either WIN or we LEARN. We also answer some listener questions for the last 10 minutes of the episode!
