In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. After getting our hands on an early copy of Born of Bloodshed by A.D. Jones, we give our honest review of this fun, gory novella just in time for the spooky season. Born of Bloodshed: Nothing exciting ever happens in the border towns of Scotland, and the village of Newcastleton, with a population in the hundreds, is no exception to the rule. That is until kids start going missing and turning up dead, and violently mutilated, in the surrounding forests. A group of teens will be forced to put down their NES controllers, walk away from their VHS collections, and try to figure out what has descended upon their quaint, little village. Born of Bloodshed from A.D Jones, author of Sacrificial Waters, will transport you to 1990 Scotland for this terror-filled, coming of age story which promises nostalgia, stomach-churning violence, and a group of teens that you will fall in love with. Perhaps don't get too attached! You can pick up a copy of Born of Bloodshed on Amazon now.
In today's episode, we were originally scheduled to talk with Irish writer Frances Flannery about her debut novel, Writing Man. Unfortunately, the computer goblins have attacked us for a second week in a row and we couldn't do the interview. But we refused to let that stand! So, after calling an audible, we got horror author A.D. Jones to join us to discuss his new book, Sacrificial Waters. The conversation dips in and out of various topics such as indie publishing versus traditional, the difficulties of writing horror and adding twists on popular tropes, what really scares a horror author, and what kinds of things horror writers describe that even make them cringe. If you want to see what A.D. is up to, you can follow him on Instagram @the_evergrowing_library. You can order a copy of his new book at https://www.amazon.com/Sacrificial-Waters-D-Jones/dp/B0CY962F45 You can follow us on X, Instagram, and Facebook @dpwpodcast You can check out Caleb's work at www.calebjamesk.com.

What if prisoners were to write the history of their own prison? What might that tell them--and all of us--about the roots of the system that incarcerates so many millions of Americans? In Besides, Who Would Believe a Prisoner?: Indiana Women's Carceral Institutions, 1848-1920 (New Press, 2023), a group of incarcerated women at the Indiana Women's Prison have assembled a chronicle of what was originally known as the Indiana Reformatory Institute for Women and Girls, founded in 1873 as the first totally separate prison for women in the United States. In an effort that has already made the national news, and which was awarded the Indiana History Outstanding Project for 2016 by the Indiana Historical Society, the Indiana Women's Prison History Project worked under conditions of sometimes-extreme duress, excavating documents, navigating draconian limitations on what information incarcerated scholars could see or access, and grappling with the unprecedented challenges stemming from co-authors living on either side of the prison walls. With contributions from ten incarcerated or formerly incarcerated women, the result is like nothing ever produced in the historical literature: a document that is at once a shocking revelation of the roots of America's first prison for women, and also a meditation on incarceration itself. "Besides, Who Would Believe a Prisoner?" is a book that will be read and studied for years to come as the nation continues to grapple with the crisis of mass incarceration. Submission guidelines can be found at http://www.TallTaleTV.com ---- About Tall Tale TV ---- Hi there! My name is Chris Herron and I'm an audiobook narrator. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal. My goal was to help them promote their work by providing a promotional audio short story that showcases their writing skills to readers. They say the strongest form of advertising is word of mouth, so I offer a platform for readers to share these videos and help spread the word about these talented writers. Please consider sharing these stories with your friends and family to support these amazing authors.
