A Prior “Independence Day Devotional” as We Prepare to Celebrate Again - We Must Have a Great Spiritual Awakening that Returns America to God MESSAGE SUMMARY: Will you "Stand in the Gap" and participate in a Great Awakening and Spiritual Renewal in America? The signers of the Declaration of Independence, in 1776, began a revolution which led to the formation of the United States of America. This Revolution was rooted in the belief that all people are subject to the rule of God, even the King; and leaders are not above man's law or God's Law. Also, everyone is endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. Many people have tried to deny that America's founders created a country which wove together the concept of self-governance with Christian principles. Now, it appears the focus, of many political and church leaders, is to eliminate ideas, laws, policies, and objects that relate America to Christianity, the Bible, or anything that smacks of God. Today, this focus away from God is succeeding. We all need to hear what our founders said regarding America's Christian base. Not long after the enactment of the Constitution in the late 1700s, morality and church attendance declined drastically into a Spiritual Depression. The answer to this 1700s turn away from God became the nationwide implementation of "Concerts of Prayer", across all Christian denominations, which led to an American Spiritual Awakening. Today, through our actions, laws, and cultural revisions of our founding Christian principles, we have told God that we do not want Him around. Therefore, we must consider what God said He would do and what He has done in the past when people have turned away from Him, as told in Psalms 2:1-2,5,10-12: “Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed . . . Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying . . .  Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.". In the past, as indicated in Psalms 2, God has withdrawn His presence, including His protection and divine wisdom, when people have turned away from Him. God's presence has guided America for so many years, and the withdrawal of God's presence in America would leave us to reap the consequences of our focus away from Him. Also, consider what the Lord said, in Ezekiel 22:30-31: "And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none. Therefore, I have poured out my indignation upon them. I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath. I have returned their way upon their heads, declares the Lord God.”. However, in Zechariah 1:3 and in many other promises throughout the Bible, God says to his people in the past and to us today: “Therefore say to them, Thus declares the LORD of hosts: ‘Return to me', says the LORD of hosts, ‘and I will return to you', says the LORD of hosts.". Will you "Stand in the Gap”, on behalf of your country, to participate in and lead a Great Awakening and Spiritual Renewal in America by returning America to God? Psalms 42:5 — This sermon is for the Christian who is unhappy, feels heavy burdens weighing them down, and cannot escape feelings of despair. In this sermon on Psalm 42:5 titled “General Consideration,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones shows how God's word addresses depression. A depressed Christian is not a contradiction of terms; it is a reality the church must learn to address with the hope-filled truth of Scripture. Dr. Lloyd-Jones addresses the extrovert and introvert, both with their tendency to overanalyze one's self which leads to weariness and dejection. His challenge is to “get to know yourself” and understand personal triggers. Physical conditions also play a part in spiritual depression, says Dr. Lloyd-Jones. The Christian must be aware of this so as to readily push back against the devil. The enemy cannot control the Christian, but he can and will use exaggerated circumstances to further discourage. Many of God's servants have experienced spiritual depression and/or spiritual exhaustion. Today we look at 1 Kings 19 and see that Elijah suffered deep spiritual depression right on the heels of spiritual victory. This will be a challenging study as we look at principles for how to deal with it. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1.    The opening verses of 1 Kings 19, what does Ahab tell Jezebel? If you were Jezebel and heard about all the Lord had done in 1 Kings 18, how would you have responded? 2.    Instead, what message does Jezebel send to Elijah in verse 2? Given what just happened in 1 Kings 18, how should Elijah have reacted to Jezebel's threats? How does he react in verse 3? Do you find this surprising? Why or why not? 3.    Verse 3 says that Elijah fled to Beersheba. If you can, go find Beersheba on a map of Israel and Judah from this time period. What does Beersheba's location tell you about the depth of Elijah's fear? 4.    Now look at verse 4. What does Elijah then do? What does his prayer consist of? Is this a prayer of faith or fear?  5.    How do we see God's grace in the help that the angel gives to Elijah in verses 5 to 8? 6.    After this, where does Elijah go in verse 8? Historically speaking, what major events have happened already in this place? Why do you think Elijah went there? 7.    In verse 9, why do you think the Lord asked him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 8.    What was the content and tone of Elijah's answer in verse 10? What does this reflect about his spiritual depression? Where do you think this spiritual depression came from?  9.    What was the Lord's answer to Him in verses 11 – 14? Why do you think He repeats this question? 10.    People sometimes refer to verse 12 as proof that we can hear a “still, small voice” from God. In reading this passage, is the Lord's voice merely quiet or is it completely silent and only something that Elijah can hear? In other words, was there an actual voice? Do you think that verse supports the idea that people can hear audible messages from God? 11.    Going back to 1 Kings 19, what was Elijah's answer in verse 14? Looking at his answer, what was Elijah really focused on? How was this leading to His spiritual depression? 12.    Do you ever experience spiritual depression after a spiritual victory? When we are feeling empty or spiritually depressed, or when circumstances make us aware of our weakness, that is a great opportunity to grow in God by turning to Him and asking Him to fill our void. We must be thirsty for God before we drink of His living water (Isa 55:1, John 7:37, Rev 21:6, 22:17). When our soul is full of worldly things we have no room for God, but “blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (God's Word and Spirit) Presence, for they shall be filled (with God's Presence)” (Matt 5:6). In Psalm 42 the psalmist is depressed and thirsty for the living God (v1-2), so He turns to God to fill him. Inspired by the local scenery, where the river Jordan flows out from Mount Hermon at Banias and tumbles down in waterfalls, he focuses on God, seeing these waters as a picture of God's river of life (v6), and then cries out from the depth of his heart (need) to the depths of God to fill him: “Deep calls unto deep at the noise (sound) of Your waterfalls (of grace)” (v7a). Through His Word, we hear the sound of His river of life flowing to us, and respond by calling out to Him to fill us. As a result: “all Your waves and billows (of love, peace and joy) have gone over me. The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime” (v7b-8). The Oil Miracle (2Kings 1-7), when God filled all the empty vessels that were presented to Him with His Oil (representing the Holy Spirit) reveals that He is willing to fill all the empty parts of our soul with His Spirit, if we turn to Him, present them to Him, and ask Him to fill us. The Oil only stopped flowing when there were no longer any empty vessels to fill. So our empty voids (our awareness of our weakness and need) are a great opportunity to turn to god and be filled.

"Man I've made such a mess of my life. How could God still love me?" When it comes to a spiritual depression, there is a cure.

This Psalm is connected to Psalm 42. We all go through periods of spiritual depression. The Psalmist is calling out to God to help him; he had been treated in an unjust manner.

Ordained minister, Dr. Dennis Hall, uses memories of his father, a World War II veteran, to talk about the deep psychological scars that can result in what we know today as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Dr. Hall reviews the differences between a major depressive disorder, depression, and PTSD. Spiritual depression that impacts many devoted Christians and is no ordinary fit of depression. It is a crisis of faith when one senses the absence of God. Dr. Hall explains why a Christian can have joy in his heart and spiritual depression in his head. Some of the potential causes of spiritual depression are discussed. Dr. Hall concludes the podcast by pointing out that spiritual depression can become one of the greatest means for growing more Christlike. So many times, the evangelical church has been dismissive or insensitive to those battling with spiritual depression. Nevertheless, the psalmist vulnerably and truthfully recalled a personal battle with this issue. Ultimately, he found his hope in God. Join us as we discuss spiritual depression in Psalm 42.

In this episode, Jonny Ardavanis breaks down some of the themes from his forthcoming book, "Consider The Lilies: Finding Perfect Peace In The Character of God" (Zondervan) and examines some of the physical factors that contribute to our anxiety and despair. Martyn Lloyd-Jones once said in his book "Spiritual Depression" that we are "embodied beings" and "we cannot separate the physical from the spiritual because we are body, soul, and mind." It would be an extreme statement to say that the root cause of all anxiety is "always physical," but it would also be incorrect and unbiblical to not identify the reality that different factors such as loneliness, temperament, exhaustion, grief, trauma, and physical infirmity make us vulnerable and susceptible to anxiety. These different factors never excuse an ungodly worry or lack of joy, but Lloyd-Jones explained that one of the first thing the anxious and despairing is to "know themselves" and to realize that our minds are not separated from our bodies.In this episode, Jonny examines some Biblical characters, who although commended for their faithfulness, were vulnerable to anxiety because of various physical factors in their life. Many of God's servants have experienced spiritual depression and/or spiritual exhaustion. Today we look at 1 Kings 19 and see that Elijah suffered deep spiritual depression right on the heels of spiritual victory. This will be a challenging study as we look at principles for how to deal with it. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1.    The opening verses of 1 Kings 19, what does Ahab tell Jezebel? If you were Jezebel and heard about all the Lord had done in 1 Kings 18, how would you have responded? 2.    Instead, what message does Jezebel send to Elijah in verse 2? Given what just happened in 1 Kings 18, how should Elijah have reacted to Jezebel's threats? How does he react in verse 3? Do you find this surprising? Why or why not? 3.    Verse 3 says that Elijah fled to Beersheba. If you can, go find Beersheba on a map of Israel and Judah from this time period. What does Beersheba's location tell you about the depth of Elijah's fear? 4.    Now look at verse 4. What does Elijah then do? What does his prayer consist of? Is this a prayer of faith or fear?  5.    How do we see God's grace in the help that the angel gives to Elijah in verses 5 to 8? 6.    After this, where does Elijah go in verse 8? Historically speaking, what major events have happened already in this place? Why do you think Elijah went there? 7.    In verse 9, why do you think the Lord asked him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 8.    What was the content and tone of Elijah's answer in verse 10? What does this reflect about his spiritual depression? Where do you think this spiritual depression came from?  9.    What was the Lord's answer to Him in verses 11 – 14? Why do you think He repeats this question? 10.    People sometimes refer to verse 12 as proof that we can hear a “still, small voice” from God. In reading this passage, is the Lord's voice merely quiet or is it completely silent and only something that Elijah can hear? In other words, was there an actual voice? Do you think that verse supports the idea that people can hear audible messages from God? 11.    Going back to 1 Kings 19, what was Elijah's answer in verse 14? Looking at his answer, what was Elijah really focused on? How was this leading to His spiritual depression? 12.    Do you ever experience spiritual depression after a spiritual victory? Depression of spirit is a real struggle for many Christians. Psalm 143 may offer an excellent prayer for such times.
