On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch catches up with Nate Thomas from the Missouri Woods and Water Podcast, also on Sportsmen's Empire. The two catch up over deer season, and Nate shares that 2023 deer season was a little tougher than years past. While he had success in many ways, from taking kids hunting and his brother-in-law harvesting one of the target bucks, things just did not align for Nate's tag to get filled. A change in scenery is just what the doctor ordered - coyote hunting! Nate, Micah, and Andy have really invested time and money into the tools of the trade to coyote hunt throughout the calendar year. The hunt dynamic compared to deer hunting is distinctly different in Nate's eyes, which is why he enjoys it so much. We discuss tools of the trade: what are essential pieces of equipment, and what are the things that after using for a season you learned were a waste of money? Nate shares a few exciting hunting experiences with us as well, which is a perfect way to begin the winter portion of predator hunting! On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by fellow Michigander and new Host on MichiganWild Podcast, Nate Rozeveld. Nate is a family man who lives and breathes the outdoors. Nate has conditioned his life around seasons, so he can maximize the right time. The guys talk about several topics, and eventually settle on the meat vs antler chat, where they are able to agree some very foundational terms. Nick of course dives into whether Nate processes his game or takes it in, and is quite impressed with how Nate handles his shoulders. So dive into the great chat about hunting in Michigan, on this episode of Huntavore. Nick is joined by Fellow Sportsmen's Empire Host, Nate Roseveld. He comes to us from the Michigan Wild Podcast and hopes to bring some excitement to feed. Nate has his fingers in many different things that keep busy outdoors. Having a passion for small game and running dogs, of course chasing mature whitetails, and is contemplating upping his angling, Nate has his hands full of topics to talk about. Nick was impressed that Nate, when given the chance, will process his own venison. Being a bit of a novice in the kitchen, Nate does enjoy making meat sticks and jerky. A meat treat guy at its finest. While he does skit the chance to make some hard earned wild game for his fellow hosts in the Emperor's Table Pot Luck with chicken wings, Nate delivers on his use of shoulders. Smoking first and wrapping at the end, Nate gives a taste of how we all could approach those whitetail front quarters. UNCENSORED by GoWild

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2023 47:11

In this week's [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we start off with some silliness and ask where our regional accents and drawls come from. How much does alcohol influence their appearances? What happens to your accent when you're born and raised somewhere and then visit or move to another area … do you fake it or have you made it? How does age affect how it happens?  Derek went up to central Ohio to turkey hunt with our good buddy Paul Campbell of the O2 Podcast and How to Hunt Turkey Podcast. They hunted both private and public land, saw some birds, hunted a few different ways, and got real close to some toms … find out how they did. They follow two key tactics for killing birds: with your feet or with your seat. They also remind us that even if you're calling and not hearing birds respond, they are still hearing you. How does vegetation affect hunting as the season progresses? We also discuss how public land parcels are neglected and trashed by people. This may not be hunters or anglers doing it and it's not the fault of the state wildlife agency; so who is creating these messes and what can we do about it? Arica took her kids pond fishing and they got into some panfish. They're planning a trip up to Michigan and are hoping to target pike, bass, and more. School gets out soon and they'll be camping hard until the end of summer. Dan Johnson from Sportsmen's Empire raises a great question about kids' age and camping: how young is too young to take a big trip to somewhere like Yellowstone? At a young age, are they able to get around and will they even remember it? Can you train and condition kids to prepare for a big trip and long hikes? Dan and Derek talk about the tags they've drawn already, are planning to draw, and hint at some of their fall hunting plans.  If you like what you're hearing, please leave us a rate and review!! [UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. [UNCENSORED] is a behind the scenes look at our adventures, failures, wins, embarrassing moments at trade shows, hilarious tales from the warehouse, and a good rant or three about the most recent tyranny from the Dark Lord of the Sith himself. The show launches every Monday morning. Subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts. Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant, outdoor content! You think you've found a good spot when you find an old natural blind. Have you ever thought of using trail cams for turkeys? Dan and Jacob discuss their plans for opening day. The entire crew will be mixed up on public and private land this season. We've also got some plans to access some areas via waterways. We have Dan Johnons from Sportsmen's Empire back on and he talks about a turkey hunt with his daughter.  We also talk guns. Shooting rifles and daily carries. We swap some tick stories and share our best practices for preventing and dealing with these little buggers. On this episode of Huntavore, Nick's sights turn southward as he is joined by John Hudspeth, Host of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast.  John may be the pickiest eater on the show, yet resides in a true sportsmen's cornucopia of species to chase.  One in particular is the feral hog, an animal that brought a lot of attention to itself in the past several years.  John paints a picture of what Nick is to expect when he travels down and faces off against these formidable beasts.  To top it all off, John lays out a couple dishes for the Emperor's Table that even picky eaters will enjoy.  Lots of great conversation on this episode of Huntavore.John Hudspeth, AKA “The Voice of Oklahoma” , coined by one of his listeners, invited Nick and the Sportsmen's Empire crew to a hog hunt.  Biting at the chance, Nick wanted to have John on the show to lay out what was to be expected when chasing hogs.  John gives some details on how to approach hog hunting, like feel free to take off in the morning, since the pigs in his area tend to be active evening and night.  Also, pigs are heavily motivated by food this time of year.  Put out the best grub, you'll find the pigs.  Speaking of grub, John lays out some great dishes to be presented at the Emperor's table.  John and the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast can be found on Mondays on Sportsmen's Empire Network.Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content!

The boys went to the Bassmaster Classic in Tennessee, got to hang out with some vendors, met a few pros, and took a selfie with the Godfather of flop, Mr. Bill Dance. Dan Johnson shares a legendary Bill Dance story with the one time he got beat! We talk about the thrill of the big event and what the pros are doing to stay on fish. If you've ever wondered how one of these tournaments works, we've got your answers. Dan Johnson from Sportsmen's Empire is our featured guest once again, this time to talk about many of the new proposed rules and regulations around hunting. Dan talks through some of the issues and lets us know what's happening and why hunters should be concerned. He talks about companies hiring lobbyists to push new hunting laws for the companies to make money. He also poses some difficult questions, like should we have a firearm season on whitetails during the rut, what role do wildlife managers serve, and who is really making these laws. He mentions you should contact your local representatives to share your opinions whether you support or disapprove of any new bills. Another great resource for hunters to stay “in the know” is by joining and supporting Sportsman's Alliance. Hunters, anglers, trappers, and outdoorspeople should equally get involved with their state wildlife management agency to voice their concerns and express their wishes.  If you like what you're hearing, please leave us a rate and review!! We've been friends with Dan for a while now; we like what he is doing and he likes what we are doing, so we decided to join forces–see what that's going to look like moving forward. Is there another GoWild podcast in the works?Dan questions what it really means to be an “expert” at something. He asks Brayden about his journey into becoming a fly angler and Brayden mentions his easiest and hardest parts of transitioning from bass fishing to fly fishing. Dan also talks about the challenge of having interviewed over 1,000 podcast guests and shares his experience from the recent Iowa Deer Classic tradeshow and what makes it one of the best. He recounts his glory days as a whitetail antler shed hunter and drops a bombshell bone-finding tip. He also gives us his no-fail, dummy-proof longbeard-flopping guide to killing turkeys.Brayden set up his new rod and reel and is gearing up for a fly fishing trip with several GoWild members. He started with the Orvis Encounter rod/reel combo but is now scaling up to a DIY setup. Jacob paid off some of his marital debt to be able to join them on the trip! He also mentions his favorite flies to use this time of year.Brad celebrated his daughter's birthday and spent the weekend elbow deep in unicorns and rainbows. Dan mentioned how he got his young daughter a cell phone–and why he instantly regretted it! We've got several parents on the show today and get into the strangest, craziest, and wildest things our kids are saying and doing. Aside from these normal antics, what can we do as parents to help them with survival skills and other important life lessons?Don't forget about the UTV giveaway: Learn more and enter now and let us know how you like this new podcast format with Dan.[UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. On this episode of Huntavore, Nick launches a new ongoing series, the Emperor's Table.  A pseudo-ideal event where creators of the Sportsmen's Empire are invited to share their go-to sharable wild game meals.  First entry on the menu is given to us by Marcus Ewing, host of the Average Conservationist and Michigan Wild podcasts.  Conversation revolves around “average” moments in the field, taking advantage of the outdoors in the winter, and Marcus lays out his rendition of a classic party pleaser, and angler's go-to that will for sure go over well.  Pull up a seat to the Emperor's Table on this episode of Huntavore.Marcus is a Native to Michigan and has a heart for the outdoors.  Marcus tells us about his shortened deer season this year because of a job change, and some of his favorite “average” hunter experiences.  Some of which were captured on trail cameras.  A very cool snapshot of him at full draw on a buck, and then a series of photos we can all relate to; early triumph, sobering realization, and defeat.  Wildgame wise, Marcus finds himself in the basic, unadulterated camp.  Live fire from a grill or smoker, salt, pepper, garlic.  He lets the animal dictate the flavor, rather than try something to fancy that could overpower the taste.  His culinary practice is also in that basic category so keeping things simple and uncomplicated helps him create wonderful meals for his friends and family.Marcus' contribution to the Emperor's Table is Fried Walleye.  A midwest staple fish; white, flaky meat, mild flavor.  Heating oil in a cast iron skillet, going for the shallow fry, Marcus is a wet batter guy, cutting his whole fillets into thirds, coating in a batter that uses a citrus flavored light beer.  Nick adds a tip, by cutting your fillets on a bias, 45 degree angle, to get more surface area and get more crunch.  To take his humble offering to the next level, Marcus says to turn those fried pieces into amazing tacos.  Cabbage slaw, wetted down with crema, lime, and any seasoning that fits your fancy.  Make sure to stop by and grab a listen to Marcus on the Average Conservationist and Michigan Wild Podcasts, both on Sportsmen's Empire.Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content!Show Sponsors:Tappecue Meat ProbesInstagram: @tappecueWebsite: https://bit.ly/2NIr0XjCoupon Code 10% off: HUNT10Umai DryInstagram: @umaidryWebsite: bit.ly/3WhfnnXSign up for the newsletter for 10% off

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 159 of the Antler Up Podcast! On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Josh Raley from the How to Hunt Deer Podcast and the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast. Both of these podcasts air on the Sportsmen's Empire on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Josh was a great guest to have on our show and we really enjoyed this chat! We dove down some gear rabbit holes in this one. So, if you are into that type of stuff, I believe you will enjoy this one! Josh was able to attend his first ATA show this past January and he shared with us some of the items that he really liked from the show and then some gear that he really enjoyed using this past hunting season. We then discuss how things are really evolving when it comes to hunting gear. Really pushing the limits for maximizing how efficient our bows are, the mobile gear we use and everything else. This was a fun topic to chat about because everyone is going to use different gear for all aspects I just mentioned. So, it was great to hear what Josh's and Dimitri's take was on the trends of hunting gear and where it is heading. We wrap up the episode having Josh talk about his success during this past hunting season and what all went into that. From there we get into some postseason strategy as well. I hope you enjoyed this episode and if you are heading to the GAOS make sure to stop by the Tethrd booth on the weekend to say hi! Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up! Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content! Learn more about your ad choices. Do you ever feel like you do the same things each hunting season and never mix things up?  It can be extremely easy to stay in your comfort zone going to the same properties, hunting the same species, at the same times each year.  While there is nothing wrong with this, it does prevent you from experiencing new places and adventures.  On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with Dan Mathews.  Dan is the host of the Western Rookie and Nomadic Outdoorsman podcasts on Sportsmen's Empire network. The Nomadic Outdoorsman is exactly what you'd expect; a guy who travels around hunting anything and everything there is a season for.  If you could hunt shadows, that would be included too!  Dan first fills us in on the epic season he had punching multiple tags in multiple states.  We discuss elk camp in Colorado and how to plan and prepare mentally for a trip west of the Mississippi River.  Throughout the conversation weaves a buffet of other topics including hunting strategy and philosophy, getting out of your comfort zone, taking on new adventures, and time management as a father and husband.  Don't over indulge!Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content!

On this episode of The nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with fellow Sportsmen's Empire podcaster and host of Southern Ground Hunting Parker McDonald about using waterways to access unpressured public land. Parker grew up in the oil patch of West Texas, cutting his teeth on whitetail hunting the “Texas way”. After high school he moved to the deep south in Alabama, and never looked back. Hunting in the south can be challenging, but Parker has learned that with just a little bit of extra effort, you can see high volumes of success hunting southern whitetails on public land. Parker uses boats, kayaks and other means of water transportation to hunt areas of where he can get away from heavy hunting pressure. Dan and Parker discuss the benefits of hunting these areas as well as the tips, tricks and strategies for scouting and picking out the perfect spot. Parker started using these strategies 8 years ago and now takes the show on the road by putting it into practice on public land in multiple states.
