https://teachhoops.com/ Why Should You Consider "Junk" Defenses to Disrupt Your Opponent's Rhythm and Force Turnovers? A "junk" defense—often called a combination defense—is the strategic equalizer for a team lacking the raw talent to match up man-for-man against a superior opponent or a dominant scorer. These defenses, such as the Box-and-1 or the Triangle-and-2, are designed to break the rhythm of the game and force the opposing team to play uncomfortable basketball. By dedicating one or two "chasers" to relentlessly deny the ball to the opponent's best player while the rest of the team plays a zone to protect the paint, you send a psychological message: "We are not going to let that kid beat us." This often frustrates the star player, causing them to force bad shots or check out mentally, while simultaneously pressuring the opponent's role players to make plays they aren't accustomed to making. The success of a junk defense relies less on perfect technique and more on confusion and disruption. When an offense faces a standard 2-3 zone or man-to-man, they have practiced sets and motions to counter it. When they face a Diamond-and-1 or a fluctuating matchup zone, those sets often break down because the passing angles and spacing are different. The goal is to turn the game into a scramble. Even if you only run it for a few minutes out of a timeout, a well-executed junk defense can stall a team's momentum, force a wasted timeout from the opposing coach, and create a chaotic tempo that favors the underdog. However, coaching a junk defense requires a "pick your poison" mindset. You are intentionally leaving certain areas of the floor open or certain players unguarded to suffocate the primary threat. The risk is that the opponent's secondary players might have a career night and hit open shots, or your team might struggle to rebound out of the unusual alignment. Therefore, these defenses are best used as a "changeup" pitch rather than a steady diet. They are tactical curveballs designed to steal possessions, hide your own defensive weaknesses, and force the opponent to beat you with their third or fourth-best option. Power Dynamics and Challenges: A star player can shift the team's power dynamics, requiring careful management to maintain harmony. Simplifying the Game: Coaches should avoid overcoaching and allow the star player to lead, especially in critical game moments. Adapting Coaching Strategies Coach Cannon shared his experiences with different star players, highlighting both the benefits and challenges they bring. Handling Key Moments and Responsibilities The conversation covered managing critical game moments and balancing coaching intervention with player autonomy. Key Points: Trusting the Star Player: In high-stakes situations, trusting the star player to make decisions is crucial. Supporting Cast Performance: Championships often hinge on the contributions of the supporting cast, making their readiness vital. System vs. Player: Coaches must balance structured plays with flexibility to maximize the star player's strengths. Coaching Philosophy and Best Practices To conclude, Coach Cannon shared his coaching philosophy and best practices for managing a team with a star player. Key Points: Overcoaching Pitfalls: Avoid overcoaching to allow the star player space to excel. Developing All Players: Focusing on the development of all team members ensures a balanced and resilient team. Conclusion Our discussion with Coach Cannon highlighted the need for balance, strategic insight, and flexibility when managing a team with a star player. Send us a textThe sacred bond between player and team is being tested like never before in today's professional sports landscape. What happens when a star athlete believes they've outperformed their contract? When does loyalty to an agreement give way to demands for market-based compensation? We dive deep into the Micah Parsons contract controversy with the Dallas Cowboys, examining both sides of this increasingly common dilemma. While Parsons has arguably played at an elite level that exceeds his rookie contract value, questions remain about whether public negotiation tactics help or harm both player and team interests. As one host points out, "This really hurts the team when your star player goes public instead of handling business behind closed doors."The conversation extends beyond football to explore the fascinating parallel in women's basketball between Angel Reese and Caitlyn Clark. Their collegiate rivalry has evolved into a professional feud, raising important questions about competition, respect, and how interpersonal conflicts impact the growth of emerging sports leagues. The stark contrast between their approaches to fame and public perception offers a fascinating window into athlete branding in the social media age.Throughout our discussion, we continually return to a central question facing modern athletes: Do you honor the contract you signed, or demand compensation that matches your current value? The traditional expectation that players should silently fulfill their agreements clashes with the reality that career windows are short and market values fluctuate rapidly.Whether you're a die-hard sports fan or simply interested in the business dynamics of professional athletics, this episode provides thoughtful perspectives on how the relationship between players, teams, and contracts continues to evolve in unexpected ways. Share your thoughts with us on social media about where your loyalty lies—with teams expecting contract fulfillment or players seeking fair market value.

After that, Rahimi and Harris previewed the Cubs-Cardinals game Thursday afternoon, when Chicago left-hander Shota Imanaga is set to return to the mound after being sidelined by weeks with a hamstring injury. Later, they held the Halftime segment.
