RUNDOWN Music history in honor of Tommy Mottola's July 14 birthday—Mitch details how Mottola signed Hall & Oates and running through each of their six No. 1 hits. The “audio clip of the week” spotlights former Cubs manager Lee Elia's legendary profanity-laden tirade at Wrigley Field after a 5–14 start in 1983. Mitch and Hotshot celebrate Seattle's sweep of first-place Detroit and reviewing the Mariners' 51–45 first-half record, good enough for a wild-card spot if the season ended today. Mitch explains why he's optimistic—his rotation is poised to string together quality starts, and an offense buoyed by hot streaks from Randy Arozarena, strong on-base work from JP Crawford, and newfound production from lower-order hitters means the club doesn't need Cal Raleigh to carry the load alone. Mariners bounce back from a blown five-run lead and near no-hitter loss in New York to sweep the AL's best Tigers, cementing a wild-card spot at the All-Star break. Mariners No-Table (Brady Farkas) unpack the unexpected selection of LSU lefty Cade Anderson (saved under slot, with a high floor) as a near-MLB-ready arm, dissect Julio Rodríguez's decision to skip the ASG before homering in each Detroit game, and express outrage that Gino Suárez (31 HRs) wasn't invited to the Home Run Derby. Mitch and Puck chat KJRn'ts Chapter 8 by commiserating over their sudden need for reading glasses and sharing a wild family dare in which Mitch finally ate an entire bowl of mushrooms after his son aced the SAT. They then catch up on life—Jason's youth baseball woes, Mitch's freshman at Arizona—and take playful shots at Jim Moore's “top sports radio hosts” rankings. In this throwback to Ep. 197 (July 5, 2022), Mitch sits down with Rhonda Smith Banchero to revisit her own collegiate battles—most memorably guarding Cheryl Swoopes—and to explore how her “tough-love” coaching shaped Paolo's rise to the No. 1 NBA draft pick. Rhonda shares the moment she bowed out of one-on-one after seventh grade, her deliberate accountability style at home, and the family's bittersweet pride as Paolo chose Duke over UW. Now that he's secured a record-setting $239 million extension, her insights on nurturing a champion feel more poignant than ever. From the news that Michael Jordan's Highland Park estate is now an Airbnb (no parties allowed) to celebrity-boxing matchups, LeBron's Beverly Hills compound, Wimbledon winners, and even the exit of Pearl Jam's longtime drummer Matt Cameron, Mitch and Hotshot pack a whirlwind of sports and pop-culture headlines into one rapid-fire segment. On today’s episode of The Rickey Smiley Morning Show Podcast, the crew discussed various topics. First, Coco Jones and NBA star Donovan Mitchell are engaged, unveiling a 5-carat cushion-cut ring after two years of quietly dating, with the proposal orchestrated during a tropical vacation. Next, actress Tisha Campbell opened up about hitting rock bottom post-divorce, sharing that she once had just $21 in her pocket and had to choose between essentials for her children—raw honesty that highlights her resilience. The conversation then turns to scandal as a Maryland woman resurfaces claiming to be Jay-Z’s secret daughter, though the claim still lacks confirmation and is being treated with skepticism. Rounding out the lineup, Drake fueled the ongoing feud with Kendrick Lamar during his UK Wireless Festival set, shouting out fans chanting “Fuck Kendrick” and raising eyebrows with a and asking his head of security to give him a shot and he will drink to that. "When you went through what I went through, there's nothing to celebrate about that…I look back at all of it, there's nothing cool about it, I'm hurt from all of it. I have real trauma and pain inside of me from all of that.” Dejounte Murray In this powerful episode of The Pivot Podcast, NBA guard Dejounte Murray sits down with Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder for a raw, emotional, and reflective conversation on how as a young man he defied odds making it off the Seattle streets to becoming a basketball star to choosing an unlikely life path that forever changed him. Dejounte reveals what it was like growing up in a tough environment, detailing experiences with violence, homelessness, and parental incarceration as he shared how these hardships fueled his determination to succeed and provided the foundation for his resilience on and off the court. With pain and hurt in his voice, Dejounte find the words to share with the guys on the healing process of what he did in his early life, what he witnessed and how survivor's remorse eats at him, saying how everyone he knew from home is either in jail or deceased, and he starts most of his mornings by emailing his friends and relatives who are in prison. Overcoming the unimaginable as he explains how he went from catching a criminal case at 11 years old, to juvenile detention to playing one year of college basketball before being drafted in the first round by the San Antonio Spurs. Discussing his NBA journey and reflecting on lessons learned, Dejounte shares how instrumental his time was with the Spurs, specifically Coach Popovich, who was more than a coach and served as his first real father-figure guiding him through the ups and downs of life. He talked about the pressure of being a young player in a storied franchise, the complexities of team dynamics, transitioning to the Atlanta Hawks, dealing with injuries, setbacks and now trying to navigate life and basketball playing with the New Orleans Pelicans, his latest NBA home. Ryan gets into the growth and maturity sides of life, as Dejounte is unique in he doesn't drink, do drugs, party and very rarely seen outside in a public setting. Committed to his family, being a father and the game he loves so much, Dejounte isn't willing to risk any outside factor messing up this gift of life outside what he used to know and doesn't want anything to interfere with his healing. A heart-wrenching conversation at times, but one definitely worth listening to as Dejounte's courage to open up on overcoming life-changing obstacles, and the pivotal moments that shaped his path to success, will impact you in ways you never thought possible. “How you gonna ridicule me? I'm in the one percentile of my work and I've shown you I work hard, so why can't I have a life away from my job?” Paul George Philadelphia 76ers In a special crossover edition of The Pivot, we sit with NBA star, Paul George for the first part of our show and then Ryan, Chan and Fred do a second part with PG as the host that is streaming on his Podcast P channel…it's a layered conversation about basketball, football, teammates, legacy, expectations personally and professionally as well as the role of family and more as we kick off the first part of this show… This raw and insightful discussion goes far beyond the court as PG opens up about the highs and lows of his career—from the devastating leg injury that nearly ended it all, to becoming one of the league's most respected veterans as he's played for the NBA's most storied franchises and had teammates who've defined the game. In a moment of humility and honesty, PG talks about coming to the Philadelphia 76ers and how things ultimately didn't go as planned with championship expectations premature but hopes the adversity of a talented locker room will help the team rebound going forward. His admiration to play with Joel Embiid is what drew him to Philly, but injuries kept the duo from reaching full potential. He reflects on the mental and emotional toll of unmet goals, while staying focused on growth and what's next in his journey. PG shares his mindset shift over the years, lessons in leadership, and how he's learned to balance basketball, fatherhood, and business. “I was at the lowest point, I didn't know what I wanted. I didn't even know if I wanted to be alive at the time.” Michael Carter-Williams Former NBA star In this powerful episode of The Pivot Podcast, former NBA Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams sits down with Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder to share the untold story of his journey through the highs and lows of professional basketball, the quiet moments that almost broke him and uncovering resilience. From instant stardom to injury setbacks and battling to stay in the league, Micheal opens up on how he found the mental toughness needed to keep pushing when the world counted him out and shares how he found peace and joy again. From rock bottom back up to the fullest he's been in his life, Michael talks about the pressure of early success, the lessons learned from adversity, and how fatherhood and personal growth reshaped his mindset both on and off the court. This conversation is raw and honest about identity, perseverance, and finding purpose beyond the sport. He reflects on growing up in a wealthy town but not having wealth, navigating the feeling of being an outsider in both predominantly white and Black spaces, and how basketball became his outlet. Michael takes the guys through the surreal moment of winning Rookie of the Year with the 76ers, only to be traded the next season. He opens up about being coached by his childhood idol Jason Kidd, their fallout, the challenges of bouncing between five teams in five years, and the mental toll of trying to live up to high expectations. At one of the lowest moments in his life, Michael reveals how he lost both his NBA job and his fiancé in the same week, sending him into deep depression and self-doubt. He admits there was a time he didn't even know if he wanted to be alive. But through therapy, self-reflection, and rediscovering his purpose, he found his way back, eventually re-earning the trust of his now-wife and securing a two-year deal with the Orlando Magic. Transitioning into the next phase of his life, Michael talks about his role as an ESPN analyst, the importance of teaching athletes about business, and why mental health is still taboo in NBA locker rooms. He hopes to change that narrative by starting real conversations something he wishes had been available to him earlier in his career. This episode of the Pivot is about survival, self-worth, and embracing the journey, no matter how unpredictable it gets. Michael Carter-Williams' story proves that success isn't defined by awards or contracts, but by the ability to fight through adversity, rebuild, and come back stronger than before. In July of 2002, former NBA star Bison Dele (Daily), his girlfriend Serena Karlan, and a boat captain named Bertrand Saldo vanished while sailing the South Pacific Ocean. The only person to return from the trip was Bison's older brother, Miles. When Miles arrived alone in Tahiti, the boat had been repainted and renamed. Authorities suspected Miles had murdered the other three while at sea so that he could assume his brother's identity, but with no bodies ever found and with Miles' death in 2002, the fate of Bison and his companions remains a mystery to this day.
