Words like sex addict or porn addiction are hastily applied or adopted. But often we miss gaining a greater understanding of ourselves and the truth of our situation. Bill Herring, LCSW, CSAT joins Porn Free Radio to share his framework for assessing problematic sexuality. It can easily be used to assess problematic porn use. Bill's common sense framework looks at 5 categories and uses 5 questions to assess problematic sexual behaviors. Bill's Questions: Are you keeping your promises? (Responsibility) ---- 10 Traits of the Mature Celibate The former Catholic priest and psychotherapist A. W. Richard Sipe has spent the bulk of his career (approximately four decades) studying the practice of celibacy in Roman Catholic contexts, and he argues that genuine celibacy is indeed viable and healthy for those who attain it. But he believes it must be pursued. A large number of vowed clergy do live lives of disciplined sexual abstinence, according to Sipe's major work Celibacy in Crisis, but what he refers to (unhelpfully) as the “achievement” of celibacy—in which the major developmental crises have been weathered and the celibate state has been embraced and is, for all purposes, irreversible—is more rare, according to Sipe. He thinks this mature state of “attained” celibacy is virtually always characterized by at least ten traits: first, by work (the productive use of time and energy); second, by prayer (an active interior life lived in the presence of God); third, by community (“people to whom [the celibate is] committed and people on whom they can rely”); fourth, by service (some form of self-giving that takes one beyond one's own sphere); fifth, by an awareness of one's physical needs and a willingness to fulfill one's lawful hungers with gentleness and self-care; sixth, by balance in the rhythms of one's lifestyle; seventh, by security in one's relational and communal commitments (“all celibate achievers had someone to whom they felt that they had confided the essence of themselves”); eighth, by order in one's daily and seasonal life; ninth, by learning and ongoing curiosity about others and the world one inhabits; and tenth and finally, by an appreciation of beauty. The one who undertakes this kind of celibate life must become intimately familiar with his or her characteristic patterns of desire, temptation, longing, and weakness. 10 points from book: A. W. When a person wakes up in the morning, his hands are considered impure, due to the harmful spiritual forces that descend upon them during the night, and he must wash Netilat Yadayim – three times on each hand, in alternating fashion – to remove them. If somebody touches food or a beverage before washing Netilat Yadayim in the morning, does the impurity transfer to the food and beverage, such that it should not be consumed? Hacham Ovadia Yosef ruled that one should preferably ensure not to touch any food or beverages before washing Netilat Yadayim in the morning. If a food product was touched by somebody who had not washed Netilat Yadayim, then if it can be rinsed with water – such as in the case of an apple – then it should be passed under running water three times, and there is then no concern. If, however, this food cannot be washed – such as a piece of cake, or bread, or a beverage – then the product may nevertheless be eaten. Hacham Ovadia explains that there is room for leniency in this case because the food's status is subject to a debate among the Poskim. Maran (Rav Yosef Karo, author of the Shulhan Aruch), in Bet Yosef, understood that only beer becomes contaminated by being touched by someone who had not performed Netilat Yadayim, but all other foods do not. Accordingly, he writes in the Shulhan Aruch (Orah Haim 4:5) that one must ensure not to touch a keg of beer before washing Netilat Yadayim in the morning – clearly indicating that this does not apply to any other food or beverage. This is the position taken by several later Poskim, including the Hayeh Adam (Rav Avraham Danzig of Vilna, 1748-1820), Rav Yaakov Emden (Germany, 1697-1776), the Aruch Ha'shulhan Aruch (Rav Yechiel Michel Epstein, 1829-1908) and the Mishna Berura. Moreover, we must take into account the general position taken by the Rambam that harmful spiritual forces do not exist in modern times, in which case there is no concern whatsoever. By contrast, the Hida (Rav Haim Yosef David Azulai, 1724-1806) and the Gaon of Vilna (1720-1797) ruled stringently, that no food or beverage may be consumed if it was touched by somebody who had not yet washed Netilat Yadayim. In light of the different opinions, Hacham Ovadia concluded that there is room to allow eating foods or beverages which were touched by somebody before Netilat Yadayim, and cannot be washed, though those who act stringently in this regard are worthy of blessing. He added that there is even greater room for leniency if it was a child who touched the food before washing his hands, since some Poskim maintained that impurity descends upon the hands of only those who had already reached the age of Misva obligation, but not young children. Does this apply to food sold in stores – such as bakeries – or prepared in restaurants, by employees who likely did not wash Netilat Yadayim in the morning? Should a person preferably refrain from shopping in stores or eating in restaurants if there is reason to believe that the food was touched by Jewish employees – or, for that matter, by other customers – who are not halachically observant? Hacham Ovadia maintained that one needs not be stringent in this regard. In addition to the lenient position mentioned earlier, there are additional factors to consider when it comes to shops and eateries. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909), in Od Yosef Hai, brings the teaching of the Arizal that although water must be poured three times over the hands to eliminate the impurity, the impurity fades with each washing. Therefore, even if the employees did not properly wash Netilat Yadayim, they certainly washed their hands, which weakened the impure forces on their hands. It is thus quite likely that the impurity can then no longer be transferred onto food and cause harm to those who eat it. Additionally, it is possible that these workers do, in fact, wash Netilat Yadayim. We must also take into account the fact that in most establishments nowadays, the employees involved in food preparation and serving are required to wear gloves. In light of all these considerations, there is no reason to avoid buying food in shops and restaurants with Jewish employees who likely do not wash Netilat Yadayim in the morning. This entire discussion applies only to food that was touched by a Jew who had not washed Netilat Yadayim. The hands of a non-Jew do not become impure overnight, and thus there is no concern whatsoever when a gentile touches food or beverages. A number of Poskim noted that just as the remains of a non-Jew do not emit Tum'a as do the remains of a Jew, similarly, the hands of a gentile do not become impure overnight. Summary: One should avoid touching food and beverages in the morning before washing Netilat Yadayim. If a food was touched by a Jew who had not washed Netilat Yadayim, then it should be rinsed if possible. If this is not possible, then there is room to allow consuming the food or beverage, especially if it was touched by a child, though those who wish may be stringent and refrain from consuming the product. It is entirely permissible to buy food in a store, or eat in a restaurant, even though the food may have been handled by Jewish employees who likely did not wash Netilat Yadayim in the morning.

As discussed in a previous installment, the water with one washed Netilat Yadayim in the morning is considered impure, and could cause harm to those who step on in. Therefore, one must ensure not to wash his hands in a place where people walk, and to wash instead directly into a sink, or into a utensil and then pour the water down a drain. If one mistakenly washed Netilat Yadayim on the ground in a place where it could be stepped on, he must pour more water over it to wash it away, out of concern for the wellbeing of others. The Poskim address the question of how much water is needed to wash away the contaminated water. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) writes that one should pour "a lot of water," without specifying a particular quantity. The Yalkut Yosef writes that the Halacha in this case might resemble the Halacha requiring pouring a Rebi'it of water over urine to eliminate its status as urine so that one may read the Shema in its presence (Shulhan Aruch, Orah Haim 77:1). Perhaps the same small amount is required to eliminate the impurity of water that had been used for Netilat Yadayim. On the other hand, the Yalkut Yosef adds, one could argue that more water is needed in the case of water used for hand-washing. Hacham Ovadia Yosef, in Yabia Omer (vol. 3, 1:9), brings different views regarding this question. Hacham Avraham Hamwey (Aleppo, 1838-1886) shows that according to the Hida (Rav Haim Yosef David Azulai, 1724-1806), water used for hand-washing has a stricter status than that of urine, and thus a large amount of water is needed to eliminate this status. Many others, however, as Hacham Ovadia cites, ruled leniently, that it suffices to pour just a Rebi'it of water over the water used for washing. Hacham Ovadia appears to favor the lenient position. By contrast, Rav Ovadia Hedaya (1889-1969), in Yaskil Abdi, rules that one must use more water than the amount of contaminated water. It is preferable to follow this stringent opinion. The Yalkut Yosef writes that if the water used for Netilat Yadayim spilled over a tiled floor, it may be cleaned with a mop or rag. At first glance, one might question this ruling, in light of the fact that the water will contaminate the mop or rag which absorbs it. Rav Yisrael Bitan suggests explaining this ruling in light of a teaching of the Ben Ish Hai concerning the handles of the cup used for Netilat Yadayim. In his Od Yosef Hai, the Ben Ish Hai writes that one may hold the handles of the cup as he pours the water over his hands, even though there are contaminated droplets of water on the handles from when he first touched them. The reason, the Ben Ish Hai explains, is that the harmful spiritual forces are "arrogant" and only bother affecting significant water. The droplets on the handles, which are hardly visible, are regarded as "beneath their honor," and so they do not bother affecting it. It stands to reason that this applies also to water absorbed by rags or a mop, and so the water that had been used for washing may be cleaned with a rag or mop. Summary: If one mistakenly washed Netilat Yadayim in the morning in a place where people might step on them, or if the water spilled in such a place, he must pour water over them so they are not stepped on. Preferably, he should pour an amount of water exceeding the amount of contaminated water on the ground. If the water spilled on a tiled floor, it may be cleaned with a rag or mop.

People hear about infant baptism, and they have immediate questions when they are not used to this practice. How can we baptize an infant who has not yet made a profession of faith? Does baptism mean that the child is necessarily regenerate? Does the water itself wash away sin?Baptism is not a magical act, nor is it a declaration that we know with certainty what God has done in the heart of an individual. Rather, baptism is a sign of God's covenant. It is God's testimony that his promises are true and that salvation is found in Christ.Baptism points us to the great reality of the gospel: Christ has passed through death in the place of his people. The waters of death have no ultimate claim upon those who are united to Christ. He entered into death, endured its judgment, and emerged victorious in his resurrection. Our cleansing is not ultimately found in the water of baptism. Our cleansing is found in Christ. Baptism simply testifies that the church is the place where we see the people who have passed through death. Set Apart in ChristIn 1 Corinthians 7:14, Paul says that the children of a household with even one believing parent are holy rather than unclean. That language is significant. Paul is not saying that every child of a believing parent is automatically regenerate or guaranteed salvation. He is saying that these children are set apart unto the Lord. They belong to the covenant community and are to be raised as covenant children.This is consistent with the way God has always dealt with his people. God works through families and households. Children were included in the covenant in the Old Testament, and Paul exhorts children as members of the covenant community in the New Testament.So when we baptize our children, we are not saying, "This child is definitely saved because he has received water." We are saying, "This child has been set apart unto the Lord. This child belongs to the covenant community. This child has been given the sign and pledge of God's promises." This is why we say that the child can pray to God. This child is in covenant with the Lord. We should not see the sign as a sign of our faith, but a sign of the Lord's covenant. Washed by ChristThere is a challenge that Paul is addressing. The challenge is: how do we view our children when only one parent is a professing believer? Do we see the children as unholy or holy? Paul literally tells us that based on the profession of one parent, we see the children as holy. Paul also says otherwise they would be unclean. This means that the children would be outside the covenant. “Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.”When we say that members of the covenant are washed by Christ, we should see that this does not mean that they are necessarily saved. It does not mean that they take hold of Christ by faith. This is like Israel passing through the sea. They were all vindicated in the sea in that they emerged triumphant. God delivered them, but it does not mean that all of them were in the right relationship with the Lord. Paul reminds us that God was not pleased with all of them. (1 Cor. 10:1-5)This means that we teach them to pray to their God. We don't treat them as outsiders who have no relationship to the covenant until they can somehow prove themselves worthy of entering it. We raise them as children who have been set apart unto the Lord, praying that the Holy Spirit will bring them to genuine faith in Christ. So they pray to our God. They are exhorted to live for our Lord's glory. The sacrament comes to the community with a warning. The sacrament doesn't permit us to presume upon God's grace. The sign points us to Christ and calls us to take hold of him by faith. The same waters that speak of salvation also remind us of judgment. Think about the flood. Think about Israel passing through the sea (1 Corinthians 10:1-5). Think about those who were outside the ark (1 Peter 3:21). The point is, there are a people set apart unto the Lord, and there are those who are washed away. So baptism gives us both comfort and warning. It comforts us by reminding us that Christ has really washed a people unto himself. He really has passed through death. It is the assurance that as we take hold of Christ by faith, we are washed. However, if we turn away, that washing is washing us away from the covenant family. When one walks away from the Lord's promises, then the washing is the drowning in the sea or being consumed by the water. This is the other side of good news. ConclusionDo we trust Christ, or do we trust ourselves? Do we rest in his righteousness, or do we think we can add our own works to what he has accomplished? Do we embrace the reality to which the sign points, or do we turn away from it?That is why baptism is such a beautiful sign of the gospel. It doesn't point us ultimately to ourselves. It points us to Christ.We are reminded that we have been set apart unto the Lord. We are reminded that his promises are real. We are reminded that Christ has died, Christ has risen, and Christ has conquered death for his people.So let us not put our confidence in the water. Let us put our confidence in Christ. Let us be refreshed by the promises of God, take hold of Christ by faith, and live as those who have been consecrated and set apart unto him.

Introduction: What Does Baptism Mean? A Reformed, Heidelberg Catechism ViewBaptism can be difficult to understand because we do not want to fall into either extreme. We do not want to say that baptism is merely sentimental. This would reduce baptism down to a sentimental reminder of Christ's work. The Lord gives us the sacraments to strengthen our faith. The Lord works to build us up through the sacraments. On the other hand, we do not want to say that everyone who receives the sign is necessarily regenerate. This would contradict John 3, where the Spirit is free like the wind. The Heidelberg Catechism helps us here. Baptism is a sacrament instituted by Christ. It symbolizes the washing away of sin, and it confirms God's covenant promise. Through this visible sign, the Lord calls our attention to what Christ has accomplished and assures his people that his promises are real and certain.Christ instituted baptism to call our identity in him to our attentionBaptism is a sacrament instituted by Christ. When Christ gave the Great Commission, he commanded his church to make disciples, preach the gospel, and administer baptism. Baptism identifies a people who have been set apart as the Lord's people. Christ has completed his work. This is a sign of people set apart as a community of disciples washed in Christ. This does not mean baptism is merely a sentimental reminder. The catechism uses stronger language. The catechism reminds us that Baptism assures us. It visibly presents God's promises to us. This is a sign that testifies to the certainty of Christ's work.When we take hold of Christ by faith, he is truly our redeemer. We believe because the Spirit works it in us by regeneration. Baptism calls our attention to these realities. It presents before our eyes the truth that we belong to a people who are set apart in Christ. It is a sacrament, so it nourishes and strengthens our faith. Life under the sun is plagued by uncertainty. We are called to walk by faith. We are called to look through the struggles of this age and see our Lord as our shield and defender. We can look at ourselves and wonder whether Christ truly is at work in us. Baptism directs our attention away from ourselves and back to Christ and his promises. The sacrament says, in effect: Christ's people are established in him. Christ has promised redemption. Christ is faithful. His Spirit is at work in the midst of his people and his community. Baptism calls us to look to our faithful redeemer. Baptism symbolizes the washing that Christ alone accomplishesAs water washes the body, baptism presents the deeper cleansing that is found in Christ's blood and Spirit. Baptism assures us that Christ's work is real. He takes away our sins, and his cleansing goes clear to the soul. It is true that we are sinners because Adam fell, but we commit actual sins. We sin against our God. We need to be assured that we can draw near in times of temptation. We are set apart to him. He is our priest, and we are his people. Baptism assures us that Christ, as our priest, cleanses us so we can draw near to God. Christ has removed and cleansed us from all our sin and Adam's sin. Baptism communicates that Christ continues to sanctify us.Titus 3 reminds us that we are saved not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to God's mercy. The washing associated with regeneration is not teaching us that water itself possesses some magical power that forces the Spirit to act. Paul's point is that baptism communicates and pictures the cleansing that Christ accomplishes through his Spirit.Paul reminds Titus about the church he serves. The church was comprised of foolish people, disobedient, led astray, enslaved to passions, and characterized by sinful desires.And Paul does say, “Remind them.” This means that it is their problem rather than our problem. However, Paul drives home that we are sinners. It is not just “they have a problem.” He says, "We ourselves." It is easy for us to see sins in other people, but not so much our own sins. The Gospel calls us to be humble. Baptism is showing us that Christ has set us apart. It teaches us that God knows the people he redeemed and consecrated. Our fundamental drive is not pointing out others' sins, but primarily being concerned for our own. We are all set apart in Christ. Titus 3:4 calls us to see that we are informed by the Lord's appearing. But then comes the appearance of Christ. Christ is our epiphany (translated as appearance). Christ enters history, secures redemption, passes through death, and emerges triumphant. And those who belong to him are called to understand themselves in light of what he has accomplished.We have passed from death to life in Christ. This is why baptism is connected to the exhortation to die more and more to sin and live a holy life. Not because we are trying to prove that we deserve Christ, but because Christ has already made his people his own.Sin is not where life is found. Sin destroys. It divides. It promises freedom while bringing bondage.God does not call us away from sin to deprive us. He calls us to himself because life, joy, peace, and fullness are found in him. We are created to enjoy God. Baptism exhorts us to continually be who we are: a people set apart unto Christ. Baptism confirms and assures us of God's covenant promiseThe sign itself does not save us. Christ saves us. The sign is pointing us to our savior, and away from ourselves. This is the point Paul makes so clearly in Titus 3. "He saved us." It is not baptism that saved us. We are not saved by our works. It is not our righteousness that saved us. Christ saved us according to his mercy. Baptism assures us that God's covenant promise is real. Christ truly has established a people for himself. He truly does wash away sin. He truly does give life by his Spirit. And he truly is faithful to accomplish what he has promised in Christ.This is important because covenant assurance is not the same thing as saying that everyone who receives the sign necessarily possesses everything signified by the sacrament. Baptism identifies and sets apart a people unto the Lord. It marks out the covenant community. It visibly declares, here is a people who belong to Christ and who are called to live in the reality of his promises.We want to avoid the extremes. On the one hand, we might say, "This is a nice reminder." We also want to avoid saying, "Because the water has been applied, regeneration has necessarily taken place."Rather, we say that the Lord is placing his covenant sign before his people. He is testifying to the certainty and faithfulness of his promise. He is calling his people to believe what he has said and to live consistently with the identity that he has given to his covenant community.In terms of the covenant of grace, we should be reminded of Christ's judgment. Sometimes people think that free grace means we can push the boundaries of grace. We can have our sin and Christ too. Baptism warns against such thinking. We can be assured that in Christ, we have passed through death. He has entered into death and judgment for his people. He has emerged victorious in his resurrection. And baptism presents this covenant reality before the church: Christ has passed through the waters of judgment, and all who are united to him by faith share in his victory. Those who walk away receive the baptism of death. Baptism, as a sacrament, pictures the twofold warning of the Gospel. Embrace Christ, and you have nothing to fear. Turn away from Christ, and you will be overwhelmed by the final judgment. Baptism calls us to look at Christ and ask: Who is he? What has he done? What has he promised? How has he preserved me? How has his mercy carried me? We are invited to think on the Lord's faithfulness. He has led us through the death waters. We need to offer ourselves as living sacrifices called to live in Christ. We die to self and live in him. Baptism communicates that we have passed through death in him. We are part of his community. ConclusionSo what is baptism communicating to us?The Lord builds up our faith through the sign. Baptism is not empty, but neither does the water itself force the Spirit to work. Rather, the Lord visibly testifies to his faithfulness and places his covenant promises before his people.We cannot answer exactly how much the sacrament builds up our faith. We cannot answer exactly when the sacrament builds up our faith. The Spirit blows and works as the Lord wishes. We cannot control the Spirit. However, the sign of Baptism assures us that the Spirit works in the life of the Lord's church. The Spirit works in the life of God's people. We are assured that the Lord has set apart a people unto himself. We are called and exhorted to live as living sacrifices before the Lord as we undergo his transforming metamorphosis (Romans 12:1). So let us look away from ourselves and back to our redeemer. Let us take hold of his promises by faith. And let us desire to bring glory to him as those who have been set apart unto him.
