Last year, Americans spent more than 300 billion minutes on navigation apps, like Waze or Google Maps. The GPS systems in our pockets have come a long way from the first known map, carved into a mammoth tusk 30,000 years ago.But even with satellites tracking us and the ever-changing Earth from the skies – digital maps aren't fact. Errors can show up and are sometimes as old as maps themselves. The phantom island of Sandy Island appeared on Google Maps until 2012, when Australian scientists sailed to its supposed location and found only open ocean.Mistakes on maps were sometimes intentional, sometimes not – but every single one tells a bigger story. How and why did it get there? What does it reveal about the creator of the map and the world around them?We sit down with Jay Foreman and Mark Cooper-Jones, better known as the Map Men on YouTube, to talk through these questions and more.Find more of our programs online. In this episode of "The Valley Today," host Janet Michael sat down with Guy Curtis, Director of Marketing at Laurel Ridge Community College, and Jay Foreman, Corporate Training Sales Manager at Laurel Ridge Workforce Solutions, to tackle one of the most pressing issues facing employers today: employee retention. The conversation quickly moved beyond the old assumptions about why people leave their jobs, revealing a landscape where purpose, engagement, and culture now outweigh traditional motivators like pay and benefits. Why Employees Really Leave Jay brought a fresh perspective, sharing the top seven reasons employees seek new opportunities. Surprisingly, compensation no longer tops the list. Instead, employees crave strong onboarding, clear communication, opportunities for growth, a positive work culture, and most importantly, a sense of purpose and engagement in their work. Jay explained, “People want to know they're making a difference. That's what keeps them invested.” Generational Shifts and Communication Gaps The trio explored how generational differences shape workplace expectations. Younger employees, less tied down by mortgages or long-term commitments, are more likely to switch jobs or even careers in search of fulfillment. Guy & Jay emphasized the importance of understanding these shifts, especially in communication styles. Today's workforce often prefers texting or emailing over face-to-face conversations, a reality that can frustrate managers from older generations. “Once we understand the ‘why' behind these behaviors, it's easier to adapt and lead effectively,” Jay noted. The Power of Tailored Training Laurel Ridge's approach to corporate training stands out for its customization. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all solutions, the team conducts thorough (free) needs assessments, working closely with company leaders to identify root causes of turnover. Training programs are then tailored to the unique culture and challenges of each organization, blending hands-on activities, group discussions, and real-world scenarios. “We're not just teaching skills—we're building relationships and fostering long-term growth,” Jay said. Investing in People Pays Off The conversation highlighted the ripple effect of investing in employees. When organizations show they value their staff—by offering training, supporting community involvement, and encouraging personal growth—employees respond with loyalty and engagement. Janet shared stories of companies like Navy Federal Credit Union, which pays employees to volunteer in the community, creating a sense of pride and connection that extends far beyond the workplace. A Call to Action for Employers As the conversation wrapped up, the message was clear: retaining top talent requires more than competitive salaries. It demands a holistic approach that prioritizes meaningful work, open communication, and ongoing development. Laurel Ridge Community College / Workforce Solutions stands ready to partner with organizations seeking to build stronger, more resilient teams. As Jay put it, “It's not rocket science—just reach out, and we'll help you get started.” For more information on upcoming webinars and job fairs, visit laurelridge.edu or laurelridgeworkforce.com.

In a recent episode of "The Valley Today," host Janet Michael talks with Guy Curtis, Director of Marketing at Laurel Ridge Community College, and Jay Foreman, the newly appointed Corporate Training Sales Manager for Laurel Ridge Workforce. Their lively conversation offered a deep dive into the evolving landscape of leadership and workforce development, highlighting the innovative programs designed to meet the needs of today's multi-generational and rapidly changing workplace. Jay Foreman, an accomplished author and seasoned public speaker, shared his unique journey from writing children's books and leadership guides to becoming a passionate advocate for corporate training. He emphasized the importance of recognizing leadership potential in everyone, not just those with managerial titles. He discussed how his own experiences—ranging from failing public speaking in college to leading training sessions—have shaped his approach to developing others. A focal point of the discussion was Leadership Basecamp, Laurel Ridge's flagship program for emerging leaders. Designed as a foundational course, Basecamp covers essential topics such as communication, time management, and creative problem-solving, while also addressing the challenges of bridging generational gaps in the workplace. This year, the program is breaking new ground by incorporating an AI-focused class, equipping participants with the tools to leverage technology in their leadership roles. The guests also explored the value of small, diverse cohorts, which foster networking and peer learning, and the importance of personalized training solutions. Laurel Ridge's commitment to workforce development extends beyond the classroom, offering free needs assessments to help organizations identify their unique challenges and tailor training accordingly. As the conversation wrapped up, Guy and Jay encouraged listeners to take advantage of the resources available at Laurel Ridge, whether they're first-time supervisors or seasoned professionals seeking to enhance their leadership skills. With continuous enrollment and a wide array of programs, Laurel Ridge is poised to help individuals and organizations thrive in an ever-evolving professional landscape.

Laurel Ridge Community College hosts Leadercast 2025 April 24, 2025 / 23:21 The Leadercast 2025 event, set to take place in June, promises an unprecedented opportunity for both current and aspiring leaders to enhance their leadership skills. Hosted by Laurel Ridge Community College, this event boasts a lineup of world-renowned speakers, all set to offer invaluable insights and inspiration. Host Janet Michael connects with Christine Kriz, the Director of Corporate Training at Laurel Ridge Community College to learn details. One of the unique aspects of Leadercast is its inclusiveness – it's open to individuals and teams alike, offering everyone a chance to learn and grow. Christine passionately expresses the perpetual value of leadership development, likening it to a lifelong journey. 'Just like communication, leadership is something you can always improve,' she says. Historically, Leadercast began in partnership with Chick-fil-A and grew to become its own entity due to its immense popularity. With leaders ranging from fighter pilots to Olympic gold medalists, the lineup is designed to inspire and captivate. Christine reassures even the skeptics, noting how engaging the speakers are, saying, 'They are so captivating and inspiring, the 20 minutes is done, and you're like, I want them to talk more.' The event also features the Winchester Book Gallery, where attendees can purchase books by the speakers. Janet highlights an essential element of Leadercast – relatability. Unlike some events where speakers come from privileged backgrounds, Leadercast speakers often have humble beginnings. This relatability factor makes the event even more impactful. Christine shares the story of Jesse Cole, co-founder of the Savannah Bananas baseball team, who risked everything to bring his vision to life. 'Now they're billionaires,' she says, emphasizing that anyone can achieve greatness with the right mindset. This year's theme, 'Human Intelligence,' will feature various speakers, each addressing different facets of leadership and communication. Christine recounts some of the key speakers, including Hal Elrod, an extraordinary survivor and motivational speaker, and Christian Boucousis, a fighter pilot who teaches the concept of 'thought loops.' The event isn't just about listening; it's interactive and engaging. Janet emphasizes this, reinforcing that attendees will not be bored, thanks in part to local leader Jay Foreman. With networking breaks, fun exercises, and numerous giveaways, the event offers a well-rounded experience. Good news for businesses and teams: there's a price incentive. For every six people registered, the seventh ticket is free. Christine also mentions how easy it is to register, making the process hassle-free and accessible. Leadercast is perfectly timed this year, with early bird registration closing on May 5th. Christine urges everyone to sign up before enjoying their Cinco de Mayo margaritas to avail of the discount. 'It's $149 if you register on or before May 5th. After that, it goes up to $189,' she adds. Finally, Christine emphasizes the value of leadership training, not just within the workplace but also in daily life. 'You could be leading your family, a committee, or a sports team. Leadership skills are universally applicable,' she says. Leadercast 2025 is more than just an event; it's a transformative experience that promises to be both educational and entertaining. Christine sums it up best: 'The reviews we get on the evaluations every year are life-changing. It's just life-changing because these are skills that anybody can use and will make your life so much easier.' So mark your calendars and prepare to be inspired, educated, and entertained at Leadercast 2025. To register or get more information, visit laurelridgeworkforce.com/leadercast. Don't miss this chance to learn from some of the world's most captivating leaders and take your leadership skills to the next level.

Today on Reading with Your Kids, we had the pleasure of chatting with not one, but two talented children's authors - Paolo Mazzucato and Jay Foreman. These guys really know how to spin a yarn that'll capture the hearts and imaginations of kids (and kids-at-heart) everywhere. First up, we welcomed back our old friend Paolo, who's celebrating the release of his middle-grade novel "AJ and the Incredible Fish." This heartwarming story follows a young boy named AJ who's not too thrilled about spending the weekend with his grandpa. But as you might expect, Grandpa's got some pretty wild fish tales up his sleeve, and before long, AJ finds himself on a fantastical adventure that teaches him the importance of taking risks and believing in the incredible. Paolo shared how he drew inspiration from his own life experiences and the influential people who encouraged him to chase his dreams, no matter how impossible they might seem. He really drove home the message that sometimes, the biggest danger we face isn't out there in the world - it's the fear that holds us back from venturing beyond the shore. Next up, we welcomed Jay Foreman, the author of the brand new young adult fantasy series "The Adventures of Mulberry Manor." Jay talked about how this story took on a life of its own as he was writing it, with the characters guiding the plot in unexpected directions. He emphasized the value of reading together as a family and sprinkling in those little "Easter eggs" for the adults to enjoy, too. Beyond his children's books, Jay also shared insights from his work in leadership training, where he helps bridge the communication gap between different generations in the workplace. It was a fascinating look at how we can learn from each other, even when our perspectives might differ. So, if you're looking to ignite your little one's sense of adventure or reconnect with your own inner child, be sure to check out the latest from Paolo and Jay. Their stories are sure to inspire you to dream big and embrace the incredible!
