Season 3, Episode 1. - If someone told me how powerful of a conversation I'd have been in store for prior to sitting down with Stan Mayer, I'm not sure I would've believed them, nor could I have prepared myself for the conversation we would have, and certainly not from a playwriting perspective. What proceeds is an in-depth and personal insight into war and how it translates to the stage where most would place it in a cinematic medium. However, Stan breaks it down beautifully and makes a strong case why war stories belong on the stage, and how not only the playwright, but the community can heal from wounds that can still be decades old. We speak about honoring truth and how trust is an important commodity when it comes to collaboration, and how letting go can lead to getting out of your own way when it comes to ego. We also touch on the flourishing of discovery when sussing out the story over a long period of time through workshop, rehearsal, and play as well as at the importance of not diluting your co-author's voice and trusting your work in someone else's hands. It's a truly lovely conversation, and I can't thank Stan enough for sharing such a personal story and process with the Playwright's Spotlight community. I hope you enjoy this first episode of the new season.Stan Mayer is an actor, playwright, and director. In a past life, he was a US Marine infantryman and Intelligence Officer in special operations, serving five tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. Plays include Odysseus at Temecula and the upcoming premiere Mama, Mama, Can't You See with co-writer Cecelia Fairchild produced by Coin & Ghost Theatre Company at Studio/Stage in Los Angeles. To view the video format of this episode, visit -https://youtu.be/ECmQGdWRpl0For tickets to Mama, Mama, Can't You See if you're in the Los Angeles area, visit -https://www.showclix.com/event/mama-mama-2023Links to sites mentioned in this episode - Arts in the Armed Forces -https://bobwoodrufffoundation.org/bwfgrants/arts-in-the-armed-forces/Coin & Ghost Theatre Company -https://coinandghost.orgstudio/stage -https://www.thestagecrafts.com/studio-stage/Contact info and socials for Stan Mayer -IG - @stoshactuallyWebsites and socials for James Elden, PMP, and Playwright's Spotlight -Punk Monkey Productions - www.punkmonkeyproductions.comPLAY Noir -www.playnoir.comPLAY Noir Anthology –www.punkmonkeyproductions.com/contact.htmlJames Elden -Twitter - @jameseldensauerIG - @alakardrakeFB - fb.com/jameseldensauerPunk Monkey Productions and PLAY Noir - Twitter - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoirla IG - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoir_la FB - fb.com/playnoir - fb.com/punkmonkeyproductionsPlaywright's Spotlight -Twitter - @wrightlightpod IG - @playwrights_spotlightPlaywriting services through Los Angeles Collegiate Playwrights Festivalwww.losangelescollegiateplaywrightsfestival.com/services.htmlSupport the show

If there's a Playwright's Spotlight episode that encompasses all aspects of theatre that not only playwrights could benefit from but also actors, directors, and producer, this interview with Gregory Crafts is it. The amount of information Gregory offers is abundant and inspirational. We discuss bringing "the" human to dialogue, recognizing one's weaknesses, the dangers of not acquiring the rights to plays, ego in theatre and entitlement in playwriting, festivals, finding a tribe, how to successfully stream theatre, and the conflicts of interest while producing and performing within the confines of Actors Equity. It's a well-rounded episode that anyone involved in theatre will benefit from, so be sure to share it with your favorite thespian, playwright, director, or producer.Gregory Crafts is a playwright, actor, producer, and director. He co-founded the non-profit Theatre-Unleashed and currently runs Studio/Stage in Koreatown in Los Angeles, California. In Episode 100 (!!!) we're continuing the important discussions of 2020 with returning guest from Season 2, Gregory Crafts. In Episode 76, Greg and his wife Jenn shared with us their journey into the LA Theatre scene and the hustle of not only creating and running your own theatre company but also managing theatre venues in Hollywood. Now in 2020, theatres like Studio-Stage have had to close indefinitely until the COVID-19 coronavirus is under control. Like many of you, Greg is an artist and an entrepreneur, but the events of this year have forced him to adapt. As he openly shares with us, it has been no easy task, and the toll it's taken on his mental health is one that I believe we can all relate to. But what’s more, is that Greg shares with us the power of sharing our experiences to uplift others and finding pleasure and joy in the simple pleasures of life to get us through this difficult time. In our previous episode we highlighted the “Election Hustle” with the Executive Director of the LA Democratic Party, Drexel Heard, and Activist/Singer Malynda Hale, and since the release of that episode we experienced the longest Election Week ever but in the end it’s official that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be our next President and Vice President. We'll share our reactions about this incredible news in our 2020 Finale in a couple of episodes – but those of you who voted, who mobilized, who volunteered, who had the difficult conversations with your families, friends, and communities, who donated, who protested, who hustled and helped register others to make their voice heard – THANK YOU for participating in this election the secured the largest turnout in a US election ever! 8.7 out of 10 - A GREAT SHOW! www.latheatrebites.com I Decided I'm Fine: A Roach Play considers hoarding, an American phenomenon which is often stigmatized but rarely discussed. After the sudden death of the their infant child, Ellen and Stephen find themselves faced with the difficult task of moving on from the objects that remind them of the incident. For Ellen, this proves to be too overwhelming of a task, leading to years of compulsive accumulation. Juxtaposed with the play's realism is a second layer of the play which utilizes clowning, comedy, and a cockroach musical to steer the audience through the many different ways hoarding is perceived and portrayed in society.
For our final interview of Season 2, which is crazy to write, we are bringing you an interview two years in the scheduling. Over the last two seasons you’ve heard our Producer, Michael Lutheran, discuss his membership with the theater troupe, “Theatre Unleashed”, as well as his performances at the Studio/Stage in Los Angeles. Both of these theater establishments are owned and run by the Husband and Wife team of Greg and Jenn Crafts. Greg is an incredible writer and actor, as well as super handy behind the scenes, Jenn Crafts is an amazingly talented actress and producer. From their separate journeys from the east coast, their “meet-cute” in Los Angeles and their journey together through the LA Theater scene we get an inside look at how those close to us can make us stronger and how crazy running your own theater can be. This episode is also a preview of the changes coming to how we are structuring next season’s episodes. Our interviews will no longer be operated into Acts, they will be released as one full episode. Also, the origin sections of our interviews will now be shared through a narrative section in our Intros, so that when we enter the interview we are in the meat of the conversation, discussing our guests move to Los Angeles and their hustle. Do not miss this amazing love story and the knowledge of life living in the LA theater scene. Let the Hustle Begin!! Subscribe and Leave Us A Review! In this week's episode, I sit down with Shashona Brooks & Tommy Statler to talk about their upcoming ALL FEMALE production of Shakepeare's The Tempest at the Hollywood Fringe Festival! We talk about the inspiration behind the concept, female empowerment in the theatre and arts, the audition process and the craziness of putting this show up during the Hollywood Fringe Festival with only 9 rehearsals! Told through the eyes of eleven women, this magical story of the struggle for power and love features a script by William Shakespeare and is directed by Shashona Brooks and produced by Tommy Statler. Set in a women's prison, this all-female reimagining of The Tempest begins with the story of Prospero: part mother, sorceress, and rightful Duchess of Milan. Prospero and her daughter Miranda are sentenced away from their home, setting in motion a supernatural storm of intrigue, passion, and power. In a world where fate, dreams, and magic are intertwined, The Tempest tests the limits of our deepest dreams, our darkest fears, and how far we're wiling to go to change the course of our lives. Formed in 2015 with the mission of advancing new and fresh ideas, Say Yes! Collective represents a coalition of actors, playwrights, directors and theatre artists committed to creating art in a mutually respectful and safe space. When artists are willing to say yes to the unknown, an unlimited and boundless experience of creation can occur. We say yes to cross-pollinating different talents from different walks of life to create even more expansive and vibrant stories. They say yes to encouraging women to have a strong voice and to be seen. They say yes to enriching and giving back to our communities. In an artistic landscape where it is much easier to say no, Say Yes! Collective chooses to Say Yes! The Tempest will be presented at Studio / Stage, 520 N. Wester Avenue, in Los Angeles, for five performances only, June 4, 14, 18, 22, 24, 2017. General admission tickets are priced at $15, and are available online at hff17.com/4448.
