It's hard to reconcile that another year has flown by and we are in December already. This final edition of UP! for 2024 has a blend of house and club tracks to keep you dancing into the New Year. The set kicks off with Alok's new track "Body Talk" then moves into 7th Heaven's new remix of their classic track "This Is Your Life". Dirty Disco features four remixes here, the first being "Set Yourself Free" by Celeda. A smooth house mix that glides along. Mark also does remix duties on tracks for Lady Gaga, BB Hayes and Cher. I'm really looking forward to the release of the fourth installment of his Pop Classics Reworked early in 2025. Division 4 delivers a punchy mix of Tate McRae's "It's Ok I'm Ok" as does Robbie Rivera on "Your Kinda Love". Drew G (working here as Drew Gilbert) spins Katy Perry's track "Crush" into dance floor heaven and Robbie Carrigan delivers a power house new mix of "Live You All Over" by Deborah Cooper. The Edson Pride remix of Kylie's "Lights Camera Action" is an anthem and 7th Heaven once again bring their unique skills to a cover of Cher's "You Haven't Seen The Last Of Me". Cher herself teams up with Kelly Clarkson to close out the set with "DJ Play Me A Christmas Song". That's as festive as I get this time of the year :) I wish all my listeners and the crew at podomatic a safe and happy holiday season. See you in 2025. Captain Kronos – Vampire Hunter is a 1974 British swashbuckling action horror film, written and directed by Brian Clemens in his directorial debut. Clemens was celebrated for his work as a screenwriter, particularly for his contributions to British television series. Prior to Captain Kronos, he wrote and produced Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde for Hammer. Other films he wrote that fall into and circle around our areas of interest include And Soon the Darkness (which he wrote with Dalek creator Terry Nation), See No Evil (the 1971 Mia Farrow film,), The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, The Watcher in the Woods (one of Disney's forays into horror and one of Ross's all-time favorites), and one of the most bizarre sequels of all time—Highlander II: The Quickening. According to his son Samuel, Clemens' last words were, "I did quite a good job," spoken after watching an episode of The Avengers. In Captain Kronos, the titular character is played by Horst Janson, famous in Germany for his role in Salto Mortale, where he portrayed a trapeze artist. He later became familiar to younger audiences as "Horst" in Sesamstrasse, the German adaptation of Sesame Street, which he hosted from 1980 to 1983. The Captain's voice was dubbed in this film due to Janson's strong German accent, with Julian Holloway taking on the task. Holloway, who featured in eight Carry On films before moving into voice-over work, has recently voiced Prime Minister Almec and Admiral Kilian in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He also appeared in Doctor Who's last story of the classic era, Survival. In 1976, he had a brief relationship with Tessa Dahl, daughter of Patricia Neal and Roald Dahl, which produced one daughter, the author and former model Sophie Dahl, who was born the following year. The supporting cast includes John Carson as Dr. Marcus, a physician who enlists Kronos's help to investigate strange deaths in his village. Carson, often noted for his voice that bears a striking resemblance to James Mason's, was a Hammer regular with appearances in Taste the Blood of Dracula and The Plague of the Zombies. Caroline Munro appears as Carla, a Romanian girl who becomes Kronos's feisty sidekick. Known for her glamorous looks, Munro rose to fame as the "Lamb's Navy Rum" poster girl, a role she held for ten years. She initially caught Hammer's attention through her work on The Abominable Dr. Phibes, where she played Vincent Price's silent, deceased wife, and its sequel Dr. Phibes Rises Again (check out episode 10 for our review of the first of those two "classics"). As well as this film, she of course appeared in the subject of our very first podcast episode, Dracula A.D. 1972. Outside Hammer, Munro went on to play the slave girl Margiana in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, the princess in At the Earth's Core, and the deadly Bond girl Naomi in The Spy Who Loved Me, turning down the role of Ursa in Superman to accept it. The film's score was composed by Laurie Johnson, who, from the 1960s to the 1980s, composed over fifty themes and scores, including the theme used on This Is Your Life (entitled "Gala Performance"), The Avengers (from 1965), Animal Magic (entitled "Las Vegas"), Jason King, The New Avengers, and The Professionals. Though Captain Kronos was shot in 1972, it was delayed and eventually released in 1974. The film was intended to kick off a series featuring Kronos and his companions, but no sequels were made—although there have been a number of follow up comic book adventures. In this episode, I sat down with Jon Spira to dive deep into the making of his latest documentary, The Life and Deaths of Christopher Lee. If you're a regular listener, you know Jon's been on the podcast a couple of times before, and it's always a treat to hear him talk about his work. This time around, he takes us through the journey of bringing Christopher Lee's story to life—literally.Jon kicked things off by sharing what drew him to this project in the first place. Inspired by a mix of fascination and intrigue, he became captivated by Lee's enigmatic presence, especially after rewatching a rather unusual "This Is Your Life episode" featuring Lee. Jon's documentary doesn't just skim over Lee's storied career, from Hammer Horror to The Lord of the Rings, but it digs into the emotional layers of a man who, despite his towering on-screen persona, was often plagued by self-doubt and a desire to control how the world perceived him.We spent a good amount of time talking about the challenges Jon faced in portraying someone as multifaceted as Christopher Lee. It's no small feat to condense a career that spanned over six decades into a single film. Jon wanted to avoid the usual biographical pitfalls—just ticking off achievements and movie titles—and instead aimed for something more intimate and emotionally resonant. He wanted viewers to come away with a sense of who Christopher Lee really was, beyond just the roles he played. One of the more fascinating parts of our conversation was Jon's decision to use a marionette puppet to represent Lee. It was an unconventional choice, but as Jon explained, it made perfect sense for a subject who was so concerned with how his story was told. He originally toyed with the idea of CGI but felt that it lacked the emotional warmth he was looking for. So, he collaborated with Andy Gent, known for his work with Wes Anderson and Tim Burton, to create a beautifully crafted puppet of Lee. And who better to provide the voice than Peter Serafinowicz, whose deep, rich tones helped bring that puppet to life. Jon's approach allowed Lee to narrate his own story, with other voices occasionally chiming in to add a touch of warmth and gentle contradiction. It's this kind of creative storytelling that sets Jon's work apart—finding new ways to tell familiar stories.Jon and I also delved into some of the broader challenges facing filmmakers today. The industry is in a strange place right now, with budgets tightening, streamers changing their strategies, and the rise of new technologies like AI reshaping the landscape. We had a lively discussion about the role of AI in filmmaking. For one specific sequence in the film—recounting a moment when Christopher Lee witnessed the last public execution by guillotine in France—Jon's team used AI-assisted animation to breathe life into archival photos. It's a decision that has sparked some controversy, especially from certain corners of the American press, but Jon sees it as just another tool in the creative toolkit. He acknowledges the fears around AI and the impact it might have on jobs, but he also believes that, when used thoughtfully, it can elevate storytelling in new and exciting ways.Throughout our conversation, a recurring theme was empathy—something that Jon clearly values in his approach to documentary storytelling. He talked about how he always aims to create a sense of connection between the audience and his subjects, to show their humanity in all its complexity. For Jon, it's not just about documenting facts; it's about exploring how those facts feel, and how they shape the person behind the public image. In The Life and Deaths of Christopher Lee, this approach results in a film that isn't just a tribute to a cinematic legend but also a portrait of a man grappling with his own insecurities, just like the rest of us.We also touched on the state of cinema today—how trends are shifting, the uncertain future of theatrical releases, and what that means for filmmakers who, like Jon, are passionate about telling unique, challenging stories. It's clear that Jon sees the current moment as both a challenge and an opportunity—a chance to push boundaries and keep audiences engaged in new ways, even if it means embracing some unconventional methods along the way.All in all, our chat was a rich, multi-layered conversation, touching on everything from the intricacies of puppetry to the big questions about where the film industry is headed. It's a must-listen for anyone interested in the art of documentary filmmaking, the evolving landscape of cinema, and the enduring allure of a complex, larger-than-life figure like Christopher Lee.

Nellie Lutcher was a popular African-American jazz and R&B singer, pianist and songwriter, who is largely forgotten today. Born in Louisiana in 1912, she began playing piano at a young age and eventually formed her own band, The Nellie Lutcher Trio. She gained popularity in the 1940s with hits such as "Hurry On Down" and "Fine Brown Frame." Lutcher's unique style blended jazz, blues, and boogie-woogie. She was known for her distinctive vocal phrasing and playful lyrics. Lutcher continued to perform and record throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and her music influenced many artists who followed in her footsteps. In 1952, she was celebrated on the popular NBC-TV show "This Is Your Life". You're going to hear Nellie Lutcher at the height of her popularity in the 1940s, on the American Armed Forces Radio network show Command Performance, and then on the Spike Jones Spotlight Revue on CBS Radio. Sloping seems more gentle than stumbling. And graceful. But when it comes to growing older it can be inaccurate. We don't slope toward a face plant. We stumble. We fall. Face-first into the ground. "Everywhere I look I see opportunities," I said. The conversation was about how we see the world and our place. Me? I have lived life trying to take various hills. Then quickly seeking out a new hill to take. Sometimes the hill is simply making it better. Always making it better - or trying to - is the curse of my mind. As I approach the beginning of my 67th year on the earth I know the end began on day one. Growing up, children only think about the present or the future. Age urges us to focus on the future and we increasingly lose track of the present. Today wasn't great, but tomorrow will be better. Until we realize our past is larger than our prospective future, which prompts us to remember. Old people don't tend to talk about the future, but they rehearse - often with boring repetition - the past. In the future, I'm liable to be guilty of the same behavior even though I hate it. I hope to avoid doing it. The end has begun. The end of many things has begun, sparking the beginning of others. Experience, not age, has taught me how little I know. And how far I have to go to reach my ideal outcome. Mostly, that ideal outcome is me. Not in some self-centered way, but in the sense that all I will ever contribute to the world is myself. Being my best self. Nothing else matters. My impact - whatever it may be - is all any of us have to offer. It's not a minimal thing either. It's massive. More so for some than others because our talents, drives, ambitions, and opportunities aren't equal. There's also luck. Mark Cuban remarked that luck was the difference between him being a millionaire and a billionaire. So it goes. I feel like I've grown. Evidence shows it's somewhat true. Never mind that some likely view me in light of the worst chapters - or sentences - I've written. Everybody can make up their mind about me, or anybody else. And they do. My days are spent focused on other people's lives. Largely on their professional challenges and opportunities. Sometimes the focus is solely on their personal lives because what ails them is deeply personal. Challenges come from all angles. Oportunities, too. The drive to make a difference is always the hill I'm trying to take. The methodology is asking questions. I figure things out by asking questions. Asking questions provides answers. Questioning answers clarifies existing answers. The focus isn't on me, so the questions are aimed at helping others figure it out. After all, it's not mine to figure out. It's a deep version of the old TV show, "This Is Your Life." It's not my life. I have my stuff to figure out. It's only about me so I can better understand, ask better questions, and improve at helping others figure things out. Relationships. Careers. Faith. Financial circumstances. Habits. Beliefs. Choices. Behaviors. Skills. Abilities. Perspectives. Hobbies. Preferences. Everything is subject to change. Everything decays. Decay starts at the beginning and continues until the end. But Eternity changes everything because according to God's Word, Heaven has no decay. Hell doesn't either. Bliss or torture without interruption. That's not how life on earth works. Bliss, happiness, joy, peace - they're all interrupted by decay. Each has enemies that disturb or destroy. Our lives are subject to change because other people have choices that can interrupt our choices and preferences. Some years ago I had different goals and dreams than I had just a handful of years ago. The changes in my goals were driven by the choices others made, which compelled me to change my mind as I tried to figure out my best path forward. It happens. To all of us. Those folks who enjoy blaming God for all the mishaps or misfortune in the...

David Waldman, This Is Your Life! On today's KITM, David relates the true story of his rollercoaster-like ride to honchoing the KITM Worldwide Entertainment conglomerate, adding words of guidance for aspiring lawyers, politicians, ad men and women, while dishing on DC's movers and shakers. (We won't get into names though... except for Greg Dworkin, whose name we do like to drop at least three times a week.) Also, there's some news! Kevin McCarthy announced a formal impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. Yep, that's weaponization of government all right, an attack on democracy. The Freedom caucus can't decide whether to half-heartedly deny that or throw a party on live tv. Or... psychotically rant, or cynically lie… the usual. The press is happy to fall in line. Republicans will inevitably impeach Biden no matter what the facts show, or what the press says. Interim House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's got nothing, and no longer has any bargaining chips left. Donald Trump has about used up all of his pain in the ass trolls before he's caboose on a chain gang. The Gop behind the impeachment have had recent dinner meetings with Trump… and you know that they weren't there for the halibut. Not only is there no evidence against Joe Biden, but there's also of course a lot of evidence exonerating him. Therefore, the best move for Joe is to just quit... wait, that doesn't sound right. Anyhow, no one is jumping into anyone's primary now. Ron DeSantis knows how to handle a federal misdemeanor, with a bullet right between the eyes. The resilient spirit of young Americans will pull us through. We haven't heard from that dummy Lauren Boebert lately, but we will soon hear her explanation of why she was ejected from the Denver Buell Theatre after she was caught enthusiastically vaping during the Beetlejuice musical.
It was a huge privilege for my latest Nostalgia Interview to meet Anne Pőnisch and Vicky Tomlinson, daughters of John Roland Lloyd Thomas who was Principal of Saint David's (University) College for nearly a quarter of a century from 1953 until the mid-1970s. Anne and Vicky remember the days of living behind the College Chapel with its spiders, attics and cellars in an age when students wore academic gowns and had to be back home at around 10pm. They paint a fascinating picture of Lampeter from a different age. We talk about how SDC was not just a theological college, and they remember how students would line up to see their father after supper. Their father enjoyed rugby and cricket and the pastoral side of being Principal was important to him. He did all the admissions work during his time as Principal as well as taking disciplinary measures. They grew up knowing their father was a big fish in a small pond, and remember the diverse range of people they would encounter around the house. We find how things were for their mother whose first husband died in the War, and they talk about how she did all the dinner parties and cooking, in those days. We find out why she didn't let on that she was a Welsh speaker as well as why their father was keen to admit female students. This was an era when it wasn't obvious the College would survive. Vicky reminisces about once being kidnapped near Burgess Hall during Rag, and how there was once a This Is Your Life-type show arranged for their father in Lampeter's Victoria Hall. Anne and Vicky have many records from that era, including the letters that their father would write to them every weekend, and sermons and cine films. We also find out who they are in touch with from that era. Anne and Vicky reflect on how much smaller things seemed when they returned to West Wales as young adults, and we talk about returning to the place of origin. They remember when things changed in Lampeter, e.g. problems around drugs and the police having to be involved, and we learn how their father felt about retirement. Towards the end of the interview, we find out whether they have followed in their parents' footsteps at all and what their parents would have thought about the lives they have led. We learn that their father might not be happy about some developments in the Church, and what he might have thought of women priests, and they refer to the ‘lost souls' that their father was keen to take in to Lampeter who might not have secured a place elsewhere.

Back in the day, I'm allowed use that phrase as I'm of a certain age, ITV was the home of light entertainment. 7pm you could see Emmerdale Farm, not Emmerdale...this was in the days when it was about farming and not adultery or murder. This would have been followed by Coronation Street and then at 8pm was This Is Your Life hosted by wonderful Eamonn Andrews. This episode is only one of two where a stuntman is the unsuspecting guest. The sound is a little loose in places but its a wonderful moment in history and I hope you enjoy it. We are now operating almost exclusively in a red hot danger room where we discuss the lives and motivations of people we know directly. How long can we pull some low-rent This Is Your Life schtick before we finally go too far and a keyboard player we didn't notice in the credits decides the show is over? As a matter of fact, we didn't identify a single keyboardist on today's record from Cleveland's MAD MINDS so this might be the one.

Within days the article was trending on social media with hundreds of comments and nearly a million page views. In this Taboo Tuesday, Sunil talks with Dr. Emily about the anxiety he experienced as a successful entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, and how he's learned to shift his relationship to it. Staying emotionally fit takes work and repetition. That's why the Emotionally Fit podcast with psychologist Dr. Emily Anhalt delivers short, actionable Emotional Push-Ups every Monday and Thursday to help you build a better practice of mental health, and surprising, funny, and shocking conversations on Taboo Tuesdays - because the things we're most hesitant to talk about are also the most normal. Join us to kickstart your emotional fitness. Let's flex those feels and do some reps together! Special thanks to the entire Coa crew! JUMP STRAIGHT INTO: (02:01) - How ‘This Is Your Life In Silicon Valley' changed Sunil's life and career - “I put up the piece and then 24 hours later it started to get traction. I had never experienced true virality before. This was nuts. This was like almost a million page views in days. It was crazy.” (05:26) - Cue the Anxiety Attacks - “There's a face that you put on for investors. There's a face that you put on for employees. Then there's the face that you try to put on at home. And then there's other parts of you that you just try to compartmentalize here and there. Eventually that can't hold.” (11:12) - Self-stigmatization and why we should be more open about struggling with mental health - “In the process of going through therapy, you say stuff out loud that sounds weird at first. And then you're like ‘Wait a second. This isn't weird. This is who you are. And it's totally okay'.” (15:54) - Addiction and substance abuse - “It's all a spectrum. Pretty much anything that can bring good into our lives, when used incorrectly or in the wrong amount, ends up hurting us.” (17:25) - How going to therapy has helped Sunil - “You do say things out loud about yourself that can kind of feel uncomfortable, but I can now say out loud, ‘I like writing and I like when people read my writing' and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.” (20:58) - The downsides to social media, FOMO and constant comparison - “The feeling of wanting more, rather than owning what you are and being happy with it. It's very different. I still struggle with it.”

On the eve of a certain very invasive medical procedure for Scott (see episode 54), the guys try to get a little invasive with Metro owner Joe Shanahan. A task that proves to be near impossible, as Joe —writhing and squirming like a goldfish— deflects questions at every turn and attempts to transform the interview into something resembling an episode of “This Is Your Life” for Scott. Crafty. But that's okay — the few times we were able to pin Mr. Shanahan down, we got him to talk about running the best music venue in the world, hanging out at the Hacienda, booking R.E.M., the days (or nights) when Smart Bar was on the 4th floor, helping Dave Grohl get a new drum set, pipelines to Minnesota, the best pizza in Chicago, smoking pot with the Clash, and why love means never having to say “I told you so”. This episode is sponsored by CLENPIQ.
As the United States entered April 1954 with the cold war at its height, Congress and The President authorized the founding of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. Walt Disney was signing a contract with ABC—TV for a Disneyland series, with plans to build a new theme park in Southern California. Legendary conductor Arturo Toscanini was retiring, as Elvis Presley was recording his debut single, “That's All Right.” The hydrogen bomb now existed. Brown vs. The Board of Education was being decided. A certain senator from Wisconsin was claiming the armed forces were rife with communist spies. And there was worry about involvement in present-day Vietnam. On April 4th, Dwight Eisenhower gave this speech on fear. Three days later, he unveiled his “Domino Theory,” portending that for every country who fell under Communism's grip, more were likely to follow. It was no secret that Eisenhower didn't see eye-to-eye with Senator McCarthy, and the former Supreme Commander of World War II's Allied Forces understood how internal division could make a country vulnerable. That was the same for the radio industry, where those who could find work in TV were doing so with rapidity. Of the top fifteen TV shows, at least nine had begun on radio in some form. This included Dragnet, Arthur Godfrey, The Life of Riley, Our Miss Brooks, This Is Your Life, and The Jack Benny Show. But, American forefather Alexander Hamilton once said that, “in times of great chaos, people can make their name.” That was never truer than in the spring of 1954. Of course, as Joseph McCarthy would find out, people who create great chaos, can at times, lose theirs. Tonight, we'll find out more. ________________________ In April 1954 Lum and Abner was airing as a weekday, fifteen minute serial. The show was syndicated out of KABC in Los Angeles. That year, The American Broadcasting Company's flagship L.A. station had changed its call letters from KECA. Chester Lauck was Lum Edwards. Norris Goff was Abner Peabody. Although the comedy was reaching the end of the line, it was still one of the most beloved, folksy radio shows of all-time. On this day, Lum found out he needed famous ancestors if he wanted to marry Miss Priddle, while Abner set up a prank. Lum and Abner would sign off the air for the final time on May 7th. However the duo would star in one more film: Lum and Abner Abroad, in 1956.
