In which Sarah and Alex try to get a better understanding of what is going on in 50 Shades of Grey, and Casey Calvert explains to Alex what it gets right and wrong about BDSM and kink. The first part of this conversation is a rerelease of a bonus episode we put out a few weeks back. A supporter suggested it would make a good main feed episode and so here we are. Our conversation with Casey Calvert took place earlier this month. This episode was made possible by your support! You wouldn't leave the shop without paying for your latte, right?Buy us a latte ;-) https://exhibitionistaspodcast.com/support-usArchitect and first-time guest on the podcast, Nick Taylor, and I, get lost, fall into the temporary exhibition through a faulty door, rush through the show to watch the timed film, return a second time because one of us went to Tate Modern first, discuss exhibition-visiting methods, critique wall texts, and reflect upon our own relation with time, narrative, devotion and death. If you enjoyed the episode, you may enjoy my essays on Substack: https://joanaprneves.substack.comAcross all technologies, we've asked the same questions: …are we spectators or actors? …contemplative or engaged? …are images and the people in them dead? …and if so, why are they moving (both as a verb and an adjective)?Hailed as a pioneer of digital technology, Ed Atkins' work found its groove in early experiments with video-editing. These quickly migrated into the world of gaming, with its motion capture and CGI animation, and their striking similarity with live performance through timed duration, but with a complicated relation with the physical world and real, fleshy bodies. RIP David Lynch, beloved director and otherworldly weirdo. The You Are Good feelings podcast about movies graciously invited me to talk about one of the most influential films and artists of my lifetime. Talking all things Lynchian with Sarah Marshall and Alex Steed, I tried to summarize this famously baffling plot of this film, mused about the concept of Duende, and cried on mic about the Unified Field. Whether you are a fan of David Lynch or not, I hope you enjoy this conversation that was very meaningful to me. Carolyn Kendrick's latest project explores complex themes of moral panic, tradition, and the figure of the devil (AKA Satan, AKA Lucifer). The LA-based songwriter opens up about the inspiration behind her album, 'Each Machine,' which is accompanied by a thought-provoking zine. In our Basic Folk conversation, she discusses the significance of the color red in her work, symbolizing themes of anger, danger, and familial ties, and how it contrasts with the black and white imagery used throughout the project.Carolyn also shares her unexpected journey into researching the devil, sparked by a podcast project that ended up overtaking her life, leading her to interview the leader of the Satanic Temple, among many others. This deep dive into the topic became a way for her to process the overwhelming political and cultural landscape. She candidly discusses the challenges of maintaining balance while being consumed by such a heavy subject matter (spoiler alert: she did not maintain balance AT ALL).We also touch on Carolyn's work in podcasting (You're Wrong About, You Are Good) and how it has influenced her approach to music. She reflects on the importance of integrating culture and music, creating a world-building experience that connects various aspects of her life. Carolyn's creation of the Gender Equity Audio Workshop, along with co-producer and 'Each Machine' collaborator Isa Burke, highlights the power of women supporting each other in the music industry, fostering an environment where questions can be asked without fear of judgment. She expands on her exploration of traditional songs through a devilish lens, which allowed her to examine how their meanings shift when viewed in this context. She also discusses her dual versions of the hymn "Are You Washed in the Blood," inspired by Naomi Klein's book 'Doppelganger,' and how they represent different facets of her musical identity.Throughout this episode of Basic Folk, Carolyn Kendrick offers insights into forgiveness and harm, emphasizing the need for solution-focused actions in today's society. Our chat concludes with a fun and quirky Satan-themed lightning round, where Carolyn shares her favorite pop culture depictions of Satan and imagines a music festival in hell. We had such a good chat with Carolyn about her new album “Each Machine” (released 12/6/24), all the researchthat went into the songs, the “satanic panic,” and the importance of rest. Carolyn Kendrick is a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, fiddler, guitarist, and producer. Aftergraduating from Berklee College of Music, Kendrick crisscrossed the country with her former duo project The Page Turners. In addition to her songwriting career, Kendrick is active in the Bluegrass and Old-Time fiddlescene and produced and written music for the award-winning podcasts "You're Wrong About"(Podcast of the Year, iHeart Radio) and "You Are Good". Her new album, "Each Machine", released December 6, 2024 is a collection of traditional andoriginal political folk songs inspired by her time researching The Satanic Panic for the history podcast "You're Wrong About". These songs are modern, electric re-imaginings of hymns, murder ballads, pagan chanting, and even songs of devil-worship. Do you believe it's possible to change your situation, no matter what is going on? In this episode of Choice, Change and Action Simone Milasas talks with Maya Dayan about her experiences growing up in a commune in Israel, where individual choice was basically taken away from her, where living through wars meant you were in a constant state of survival, and where serving her mandatory service in the Israeli army with an abusive sergeant was the last thing she ever wanted to do. It took a while, but Maya made the choice to really get out of those lenses of survival and thinking that everything has to be harsh, and took action to change her situation. The difference that choice made, and the action she still takes towards choosing something different, is resulting in more and more of what she actually desires showing up everyday. What would it take to actualise a world of benevolence, kindness, abundance and beauty? Keys Takeaways Living In A State Of Survival Choosing Change And Taking Action If You Feel Good, You Are Good.
