This week, we're diving into SVS's thrilling new production of The Tempest—a fantastical reimagining where Shakespeare meets Dungeons & Dragons. We share our thoughts on the show's creative world-building, standout performances, and how this magical island adventure gets a tabletop twist. Plus, we sit down with director Drew Benjamin Jones to talk about his bold DND-inspired vision, turning Prospero into a dungeon master, and how the cast embraced this imaginative approach to storytelling.
“Lewis was always engaging with some important piece of literature from the past,” says historian and classicist Emily Allen-Hornblower in this episode of The World in Time, edited from audio recorded at the memorial service held for Lewis H. Lapham in September 2024. “You can be chatting about the insanity of the current political landscape and quickly things would shift to how history repeats itself, how humanity simply does not learn. And Thucydides or Cicero would rear their heads. To quote Cicero, ‘To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child. For what is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the records of history?' Lewis understood that without the past, we lose the ability to think productively or even understand the present. He made himself a warrior for the humanities, putting up a splendid fight on behalf of the arts and letters. 'Til the end.” In this second of two episodes this week, we are joined once again by Lewis, first in the tributes and remembrances of his friends and colleagues and then in his own voice. Public Theater artistic director Oskar Eustis introduces the proceedings. Former Harper's Magazine literary editor Ben Metcalf recalls Lapham the mentor. Emily Allen-Hornblower reads from Homer and Baudelaire. Actor Alec Baldwin reads Mark Twain's essay “At the Funeral.” Actor Christopher Lloyd performs Prospero's epilogue from Shakespeare's The Tempest. Producer and director Sandy Gotham Meehan shares a letter by Flaubert. In audio from our archives, Lewis Lapham reads from “'Round Midnight,” his preamble to Music, the Fall 2017 issue of Lapham's Quarterly.

Olivier and Emmy-award-winning Dame Harriet Walter must have acting in her blood: her uncle is the legendary horror star Christopher Lee, she turned down a place at Oxford in favour of drama school, and began her career at the Royal Shakespeare Company. On screen you'll know her from Killing Eve, Ted Lasso, The Crown or as Lady Caroline in Succession - plus films including Sense and Sensibility, Atonement and The Last Duel. On stage she's embodied everyone from Prospero to Elizabeth I. Her failures include failing to master the piano or music theory, failing to get roles that she auditioned for, and finally failing to cook. I absolutely loved talking to this unbelievably smart and astute woman. Enjoy! She Speaks by Harriet Walter is out now. Have something to share of your own? I'd love to hear from you! With the advent of print in the fifteenth century, Europe's cultural elite assembled personal libraries as refuges from persecutions and pandemics. Andrew Hui tells the remarkable story of the Renaissance studiolo--a "little studio"--and reveals how these spaces dedicated to self-cultivation became both a remedy and a poison for the soul. Blending fresh, insightful readings of literary and visual works with engaging accounts of his life as an insatiable bookworm, Hui traces how humanists from Petrarch to Machiavelli to Montaigne created their own intimate studies. He looks at imaginary libraries in Rabelais, Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Marlowe, and discusses how Renaissance painters depicted the Virgin Mary and St. Jerome as saintly bibliophiles. Yet writers of the period also saw a dark side to solitary reading. It drove Don Quixote to madness, Prospero to exile, and Faustus to perdition. Hui draws parallels with our own age of information surplus and charts the studiolo's influence on bibliographic fabulists like Jorge Luis Borges and Umberto Eco. Beautifully illustrated, The Study: The Inner Life of Renaissance Libraries (Princeton UP, 2024) is at once a celebration of bibliophilia and a critique of bibliomania. Incorporating perspectives on Islamic, Mughal, and Chinese book cultures, it offers a timely and eloquent meditation on the ways we read and misread today. Learn more about your ad choices. This week I want to share a fabulous resource I recently discovered, a website full of short video models for acting games you can use in class. The first time I taught a play in class, I sure wished I had more theater background to help my students act out the scenes. Luckily, I was able to connect with a creative theater professional to come and visit my classes for a few days. Soon she had them playing acting games, creating scene sculptures, and generally having a great time while relaxing into the idea of playing new roles. After that week I always incorporated acting games into my theater units, and they never failed as a community-builder and theater-bolsterer. I bought two books to complement what I learned from my theater guest: Acting Games, by Viola Spolin, and Games for Actors and Non-Actors, by Augusto Boal. Which brings me to my recent discovery, a website showcasing many of Viola Spolin's acting games through video demonstrations. With a few minutes on this website, you can easily gather games to use in class and learn how to use them. Let me suggest a short routine similar to what I've used, and then I'll link the activities in the show notes so you can head straight over to the website for the details. OK, so before I ever asked students to act Prospero or Willy Loman, we'd spend five or ten minutes at the start of class with games that would help them loosen up and trust each other a little more. I suggest you start by making space in the center of the room by pushing desks and tables to the side. Then invite students to start walking around, trying to keep a bubble of space around them so they fill the room without ever touching each other. Start slow, then invite them to speed up a little, and a little more, then slow back down, then go into slow motion. Then, perhaps start a game of slow motion tag (linked) or start playing with an invisible ball (linked). After a couple of minutes, you might play a game of lemonade (linked) or invite partners to try mirroring each other (linked). As your students become more comfortable, you can move into more complex games, or you can just stick with this simple routine to break down everyone's “I'm too cool to pretend to be doing anything I'm not actually doing” facades. Remember, while acting comes naturally to a few students, many teenagers are just really nervous about embarrassing themselves around their peers. Acting games help everyone get more relaxed before diving into Shakespeare or O'Neill, and this lovely website will help YOU get more relaxed before diving into acting games! Pastor Marco García Deuteronomio 28:1-14
IQ is, to say the least, a fraught concept. Psychologists have studied IQ—or g for “general cognitive ability”—maybe more than any other psychological construct. And they've learned some interesting things about it. That it's remarkably stable over the lifespan. That it really is general: people who ace one test of intellectual ability tend to ace others. And that IQs have risen markedly over the last century. At the same time, IQ seems to be met with increasing squeamishness, if not outright disdain, in many circles. It's often seen as crude, misguided, reductive—maybe a whole lot worse. There's no question, after all, that IQ has been misused—that it still gets misused—for all kinds of racist, classist, colonialist purposes. As if this wasn't all thorny enough, the study of IQ is also intimately bound up with the study of genetics. It's right there in the roiling center of debates about how genes and environment make us who we are. So, yeah, what to make of all this? How should we be thinking about IQ? My guest today is Dr. Eric Turkheimer. Eric is Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia. He has studied intelligence and many other complex human traits for decades, and he's a major figure in the field of “behavior genetics.” Eric also has a new book out this fall—which I highly recommend—titled Understanding the Nature-Nurture Debate. In a field that has sometimes been accused of rampant optimism, Eric is—as you'll hear—a bit more measured. In this conversation, Eric and I focus on intelligence and its putatively genetic basis. We talk about why Eric doubts that we are anywhere close to an account of the biology of IQ. We discuss what makes intelligence such a formidable construct in psychology and why essentialist understandings of it are so intuitive. We talk about Francis Galton and the long shadow he's cast on the study of human behavior. We discuss the classic era of Twin Studies—an era in which researchers started to derive quantitative estimates of the heritability of complex traits. We talk about how the main takeaway from that era was that genes are quite important indeed, and about how more genetic techniques suggest that takeaway may have been a bit simplistic. Along the way, Eric and I touch on spelling ability, child prodigies, the chemical composition of money, the shared quirks of twins reared apart, the Flynn Effect, the Reverse Flynn Effect, birth order, the genetics of height, the problem of missing heritability, whether we should still be using IQ scores, and the role of behavior genetics in the broader social sciences. Alright folks, lots in here—let's just get to it. On to my conversation with Dr. Eric Turkheimer. Enjoy! A transcript of this episode will be available soon. Notes and links 3:30 – The 1994 book The Bell Curve, by Richard Herrnstein a Charles Murray, dealt largely with the putative social implications of IQ research. It was extremely controversial and widely discussed. For an overview of the book and controversy, see the Wikipedia article here. 6:00 – For discussion of the “all parents are environmentalists…” quip, see here. 12:00 – The notion of “multiple intelligences” was popularized by the psychologist Howard Gardner—see here for an overview. See here for an attempt to test the claims of the “multiple intelligences” framework using some of the methods of traditional IQ research. For work on EQ (or Emotional Intelligence) see here. 19:00 – Dr. Turkheimer has also laid out his spelling test analogy in a Substack post. 22:30 – Dr. Turkheimer's 1998 paper, “Heritability and Biological Explanation.” 24:30 – For an in-passing treatment of the processing efficiency idea, see p. 195 of Daniel Nettle's book Personality. See also Richard Haier's book, The Neuroscience of Intelligence. 26:00 – The original study on the relationship between pupil size and intelligence. A more recent study that fails to replicate those findings. 31:00 – For an argument that child prodigies constitute an argument for “nature,” see here. For a memorable narrative account of one child prodigy, see here. 32:00 – A meta-analysis of the Flynn effect. We have previously discussed the Flynn Effect in an episode with Michael Muthukrishna. 37:00 – James Flynn's book, What is Intelligence? On the reversal of the Flynn Effect, see here. 40:00 – The phrase “nature-nurture” originally comes from Shakespeare and was picked up by Francis Galton. In The Tempest, Prospero describes Caliban as “a born devil on whose nature/ Nurture can never stick.” 41:00 – For a biography of Galton, see here. For an article-length account of Galton's role in the birth of eugenics, see here. 50:00 – For an account of R.A. Fisher's 1918 paper and its continuing influence, see here. 55:00 – See Dr. Turkheimer's paper on the “nonshared environment”—E in the ACE model. 57:00 – A study coming out of the Minnesota Study of Twins reared apart. A New York Times article recounting some of the interesting anecdata in the Minnesota Study. 1:00:00 – See Dr. Turkheimer's 2000 paper on the “three laws of behavior genetics.” Note that this is not, in fact, Dr. Turkheimer's most cited paper (though it is very well cited). 1:03:00 – For another view of the state of behavior genetics in the postgenomic era, see here. 1:11:00 – For Dr. Turkheimer's work on poverty, heritability, and IQ, see here. 1:13:00 – A recent large-scale analysis of birth order effects on personality. 1:16:00 – For Dr. Turkheimer's take on the missing heritability problem, see here and here. 1:19:00 – A recent study on the missing heritability problem in the case of height. 1:30:00 – On the dark side of IQ, see Chapter 9 of Dr. Turkheimer's book. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. A dramatized thought experiment like best episodes of Star Trek, Forbidden Planet (1956) is a wonderful reminder of how people in the past envisioned the future. Part prophecy—looking forward—and part analysis of the timeless human condition, the film wraps heavy ideas about the cost of knowledge and the ways we interact with our own creations into melodrama. Yes, it's a reimagining of The Tempest, but it's also Faust, Frankenstein, and “The Sorcerer's Apprentice” from Fantasia. https://www.patreon.com/isyanderandkoda You already know how to please the Machine Gods at this point so thank you so much. And make your voices heard for which faction you would like to see next! -Isyander Everything below is for the omnissiah. But like, you can read it if you want. Just a synopsis of the video you're watching. The history of the Thousand Sons, a legion deeply entwined with mysticism, treachery, and tragedy during the Warhammer 40K universe, is rich and complex. The Great Crusade saw the Thousand Sons spread across the galaxy, with Magnus the Red discovered by the Emperor on the planet of Prospero. The legion was known for their psychic prowess and their scholarly pursuit of forbidden knowledge, which set the stage for their future calamities. The discovery of Magnus was pivotal, as he embraced his role as Primarch with zeal, pushing the boundaries of the Warp despite the risks.During this period, the Flesh Change began to afflict the legion. This mutation threatened their survival, turning many into mindless, warped creatures. This genetic instability was a curse that Magnus sought to cure through sorcery and forbidden knowledge, leading to increased tensions with the Imperium. The Council of Nikaea, a pivotal event, was a response to growing concerns over the use of psychic powers. The council decreed a prohibition on the practice of sorcery, which directly impacted the Thousand Sons, who were among the most potent psykers. Magnus vowed to comply, but secretly continued his studies. This defiance led to the Burning of Prospero, an attack orchestrated by the Space Wolves under orders from the Emperor, who believed Magnus had betrayed Mankind. The planet Prospero was devastated, marking a turning point for the legion towards Chaos.During the Siege of Terra, Magnus and the Thousand Sons sided with Horus, seeking vengeance against the Emperor for the perceived betrayals and the destruction of their home.Post-Heresy, the Rubric of Ahriman was cast. Intended to save his brothers from the Flesh Change by removing their physical bodies and binding their souls into their armor, the spell instead resulted in the creation of the Rubric Marines, soul-bound automatons led by the few remaining sorcerers of the legion. The Second Rubric, attempted by Ahriman years later, aimed to restore his brothers but ended in failure and further complexities involving the shards of Magnus, aspects of the Primarch's soul scattered across realities and dimensions, each embodying different facets of his being. The Thousand Sons found refuge on the Planet of Sorcerers within the Eye of Terror, a realm gifted to them by Tzeentch, their patron Chaos God. Here, the legion thrives, devoted to their sorcerous ways and the plots of their Changer of Ways.Magnus himself, now a Daemon Prince, continues to play a significant role in the events of the galaxy, straddling the line between brilliant leader and pawn of his patron god, his every action a blend of his own tragic hubris and the intricate schemes of Tzeentch. These elements underscore a saga of betrayal, transformation, and eternal quest for knowledge, marking the Thousand Sons as one of the most dramatically rich legions in the Warhammer 40K lore.TIMESTAMPS —— 0:00:00 Intro0:02:40 A Preamble about the 1k Sons0:04:02 Magnus' Origins0:12:49 The Sons Origins0:20:28 Magnus is refound0:27:37 Hubris0:31:51 The Trial of Nikea0:42:10 The Burning of Prospero1:00:29 The Shards of Magnus1:14:42 The First Great Rubric1:17:14 Rubric by Ahriman1:26:57 A Petition to Change our Perception on the 1k Sons1:32:20 What're They Up To Today1:39:47 Closing Thoughts—————————— TAGSThousSupport the show
