Detroit dance music thrives on intergenerational connections. In the late '70s and early '80s, the late Ken Collier mixed disco, soul and early electronic dance music in eye-opening DJ sets that left a mark on up-and-coming artists like Delano Smith. Once Smith established himself in the city's explosive techno community, he, in turn, influenced soon-to-be legends like Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, Jeff Mills, Norm Talley, Mike "Agent X" Clarke and others. Now an elder statesman, Smith is etched into our history books as a crucial contributor to Detroit dance music, both house and techno. He's known especially for the Detroit beatdown sound he pioneered alongside Talley and Clark—slower, sexier records than what Detroit techno is generally associated for. (The trio even put out an RA Podcast under the name in 2010.) It's more recently that Smith has become known as a producer. He started his own label, Mixmode Recordings, and became a regular on Berlin imprint Sushitech, where he released many of his albums, including the jazzy deep house masterclass An Odyssey. His style has evolved over the years to incorporate ambient, dub and more contemporary techno influences. More recently, Smith's career has been sidelined by an ongoing battle with a rare and untreatable form of cancer. He's hosted livestreams throughout his ordeal to keep in touch with his fans. His RA Podcast, which he calls his "Legacy Mix," is a celebration of his favourite sounds: euphoric chords, jacking drums and deep-space melodies, the elements that have and will continue to reverberate through Detroit and beyond. It also marks the beginning of a more hopeful period for Smith, as he gets ready to travel again, especially with his Legacy Detroit series, which celebrates the lineage he's an indelible part of, and always will be. @delano_smith Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/914
Peter Kersten, and his main production and DJing alias, Lawrence, have become very heavily associated with the deep, aquatic house since the turn of the millennium. But less widely known than his house and ambient work as Lawrence and as a co-founder of legendary German label Dial, is his production work as Sten. Having not been released as Sten since 2008, Kersten makes a powerful comeback with “Earthshine” - a 12-track LP on Sushitech. Most of the album is dance-floor oriented, with some more laid-back bits. One of the tracks that will surely make many club appearances over the next few months is 'Freewalk', a piece revolving around its trance-influenced stabs. It features Lawrence's signature percussive work and punchy kicks, and we are honored to premiere it today. Take a listen and try to resist the urge to nod your head along or fidget with your feet. Sten is back. Nature is healing. write up by: https://soundcloud.com/sabro96 https://soundcloud.com/lawrence_dial https://soundcloud.com/sushitech https://www.instagram.com/lawrence_dial https://www.instagram.com/sushitech_records www.itsdelayed.com www.instagram.com/_itsdelayed_ www.facebook.com/itsdelayed
We return with another episode of the Dj Frequencies Podcast. For this installment I've put together an all vinyl mix of deep techno: heavily weighted with tracks from labels such as Sushitech and sister label Pariter. We premiere Scottish electronic music royalty, Vince Watson. The now Netherlands based artist returns for his incredible 13th album, which is no mean feat for any musician. Vince has had a massive year with releases on Get Physical, Tronic, SushiTech, All Day I Dream, his own Everysoul Audio and a host of remixes. Vince ends 2021 by presenting his label's biggest and most adventurous release to date, ‘DnA [re]Sequenced'. This is also accompanied by the [re]Sequenced Sampler which features 3 brand new mixes from the DnA album by Vince himself. The album also features some of electronic music titans including Carl Craig, Claude Young, Jon Dixon, Steve Rachmad, John Beltran, Shawn Rudiman, Stephen Lopkina and Stephen Brown. After the massive response to Watson's ‘DnA' album in 2019, Vince had wanted to carve a different spin on the LP by having some of the tracks remixed by his favourite Detroit ‘flavoured' artists from the three places that have influenced his music: Scotland, Amsterdam, Detroit. We premiere his track ‘First Wave [808 Mix]'. The track is reminiscent of some classic Galaxy 2 Galaxy records from Underground Resistance. A punchy but still funky 808 drum workout locks in the groove while angelic style synth work transcends you to space. Warm and fluffy pads simmer through the track while a powerful baseline runs through your body, the heavenly lead bounces around the track with an entrancing melody. The track is powerful, euphoric and tranquil all at the one time. This is proper electronic music. For our thirteenth edition of the Equilibrisme Podcast Series, we proudly present you : Matt & Mark Thibideau (Live). Long-time contributors to the Canadian electronic music scene, Matt and Mark Thibideau have performed under a few different monikers (Repair, Altitude, Mark & Matt Thibideau) in the last 15 years. As a duo, or on their own, they’ve played some of the most influential clubs and festivals in the world, doing so without compromising their talent or commitment to producing artful music. They have joined forces to incorporate elements of both of their respective outputs fusing two separate bodies of work in one cohesive live performance. As much dance floor-ready as it is synapse stimulating, it’s music that resists easy classification. The fraternal twins perform hypnotic dub techno, slow-burning deep house to energetic machine-tech curiosities on hardware synthesizers and drum machines. Their performances both together and separate have included Mutek Buenos Aries, 02, 03, 2009, and 2012, 2014, Picnic Electronique, 2017 / Montreal, Studio 672/ Cologne, Observatori Festival / Spain, Ministerium / Lisbon, Corvin Club Budapest, Tresor, Heidegluhen, The Watergate & CDV / Berlin, The Bunker / NYC, Guesthouse & Eden / Bucharest and countless events in Toronto. Matt and Mark have record releases with a variety of labels including 7th City, Cynosure, Waehlscheibe, Assemble music, Joule Imprint, Helena, Vade Mecum, Irenic, Archipel, Klangsheiben, Berg Audio & Sushitech and Equilibrisme. In 2011 the pair launched the label Obsolete Components — a small label featuring artists who share their passions for analog synthesizers and recording equipment. The Thibideau’s have also been featured in the documentary “I Dream of Wires” talking about their love for modular synthesizers. We are very happy and honoured that our good friends and favorite brothers joined us once more for our podcast series - this time both together! This live set was recorded at their home studio in 2021 and includes several unreleased tracks. Enjoy this beautiful ride!
An Argentinian who's musical forte has been bred in Berlin, Alejandro Mosso has been at the forefront of developing innovative percussive, organic and delicate electronic music for more than 15 years. As a worldwide touring artist, he has performed his captivating live sets across South America, North America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The Berliner is also a dedicated and prolific producer, releasing forward thinking projects that span the genre spectrum since 2003. With his particular brand of uniquely musical club music, Alejandro challenges the understanding of what dance music could be. Throughout the years, he has developed a distinctive sound palette – a perfect balance between electronic and acoustic sounds, sitting at the intersection of deep house, minimal techno, tribal, and melodic dance music. Constantly defying the lethargic ‘dj tool' concept, Mosso strives to produce immersive musical experiences, unapologetically pouring emotions, melodies, and harmonies into the traditionally rhythm-dominated genre. Throughout the years, world renowned labels like Cocoon, Third Ear, !K7, Hivern Discs, Sushitech, Sol Selectas and more have welcomed the Mosso sound to their catalogues. In 2017, he released his album “Isolation Diaries”, a first class listen that presented remixes from two of the most interesting and influential electronic music producers of the last decades: Burnt Friedmann and Ricardo Villalobos. The Argentinian also runs his own label “mosso”, focused on releasing untarnished material with a sense of character and individualism present in each release. Mosso's live show is the quintessential presentation of his artistic career. Over the years, he has perfected the art of moving dancefloors with nightly innovation and a full command of intricate rhythms. Swaying between percussive tribal beats, 4×4 house grooves, and melodic emotional layers, Alejandro Mosso has performed at clubs such as Watergate, Rex Club, Fabric, Womb, Tresor, Amnesia, and Kater Blau. He has also headlined festivals such as the Spanish and Argentinian editions of the esteemed Mutek. 2020 finds Alejandro with a busy release schedule, contributing with original material and high profiles remixes to the catalogs of labels like Do Not Sit, Akbal Music, Sirin and When We Dip's XYZ. As a masters student of Sound Studies and Sonic Arts, Alejandro continues to expand his artistic practice into the worlds of sound installation art and 3D audio. We are very proud to present this timeless mix crafted by Roger Gerressen exclusively for our Sol Asylum mix Series. Roger, along with the Dilated Pupils, was one of the first artists we have been honored to have on our label. Since then, we have had the pleasure to hear him numerous times at our party in Club Der Visionaere and Hopetosse and we hope you enjoy this eclectically solid mix as much as we do. Roger Gerressen was born in Arnhem (the Netherlands), raised on early 90’s hiphop in Nijmegen. His passion for house music began when he got the chance to warm up crowds on a regular basis at the legendary Planet Rose clubnights, which made his hometown Nijmegen an excellent place to develop his skills as a warm up DJ and to obtain a broad taste in music. After his first solo releases on the local Wolfskuil Records he co-founded ESHU (and ESHU Records) in 2011. Recognition came after a string of well received solo releases on Fear Of Flying Records (and sub-label SuddenDrop), his many collaborations with Ivano Tetelepta and numerous other collabs (like Dilated Pupils, ARC# and Novio Dub Tribe). A few years down the line it was time for a new direction which resulted in parting ways with ESHU to start his own label OGUN Records and a few monikers (like the recent Monoaware and less recently Gasometric Run) to provide him with the creative freedom he was looking for. Since he joined Paris based Yoyaku (label/store/distribution) he had the chance to release music on a few of the recordstore’s in-house labels like Joule Imprint, Aku and Tartouffe and on the renowned label Sushitech. With their support, he set up two more labels to meet his output; Irenic Records and Autodidact Records. Keep and eye and an ear out for this outstandingly dedicated artist. web.facebook.com/RogerGerressenMusic/ www.residentadvisor.net/dj/rogergerressen

Apparel Music Radio show is happy to present a exclusive evergreen mix by Delano Smith. Delano's attention to programming sets that are kinetic, emotional and educational are met with a delivery of the highest class. Having been one of the original young guns personally mentored by Motown’s 1st DJ, Ken Collier, he displays skills entirely unique to this group. Having cut his teeth in a time when an aspiring DJ had to live off his wits to make the cut, his dynamic skill set has made him the real Detroit head's secret favorite. Smith's extended hiatus later in his DJ years was ended spectacularly when the Detroit Beatdown project again highlighted his talent. Teamed with Mike ‘Agent X' Clark and Norm Talley, the crew began to spread the word of Detroit to fresh audiences, in demand globally and touching down at renowned clubs such as London's Fabric en route. On the production front, Delano stands head and shoulders above the rest in crafting alluring, forward thinking and highly danceable grooves. His productions on Third Ear, Sushitech and Still Music have taken up crate spaces with jocks looking to add the perfect blend of soul and energy to their sets. With his own imprint Mixmode debuting in 2003, it continues to release selectively soulful dance floor gems. Both behind the decks and in the studio, Delano's genre boundary defying vision of working a floor is a direct link to the beginnings of the DJ in Detroit, maintaining his integrity today, his hunger shows little sign of abating. Quotes: "Delano - Watching you play brings back so many memories!. I used to go listen to you long before I ever wanted to become a DJ. At the YWCA, Downstairs Pub with Ken. I'm following you. Keep it comin'!." - Jeff Mills "Without Delano there would be no Derrick". - Derrick May "Delano is the first and last of Detroit." - Chez Damier link: https://soundcloud.com/mixmodedetroit https://soundcloud.com/apparelmusic
