In a special conversation event, we chart hip hop's first five decades, from its birth in the block parties of the Bronx and origins in Jamaica, to commercial gangsta-rap and right up to today's artists. We discuss how this American revolution in music, dance, and art spread across the global cultural landscape. Hear four speakers passionately bring to life the culture and music – but also political theory, American history, and sociology. With our own sub-genres here in the UK, we'll look at the key moments that led to this country's enthusiastic embrace and interpretation of hip-hop, particularly by Afro-Caribbean communities. Part of Futures – a free festival of discovery that celebrates innovative and world-class research taking place at universities across the South West. It's funded by the UKRI. With an estimated 200,000 recordings over their career, it'd be an impossible task to encapsulate the decades-long career of Sly & Robbie and the impact they had not only on reggae but on music overall. Their drum & bass lines transformed, revolutionized, and influenced fans and musicians across the globe. Sly Dunbar (drummer) and Robbie Shakespeare (bass) — affectionately known as The Riddim Twins — are widely recognized as the most influential rhythm section and production duo in Jamaican music history. Their sound has powered countless hits from the golden age of roots reggae through to digital dancehall and international pop. Together, they helped modernize reggae, created one of Jamaica's most iconic record labels (Taxi Records), and redefined what it meant to be a producer and musician in a global music industry. This mix dives deep into the crucial transition period of Jamaican music during the early 1980s—those rich, rugged years when the roots reggae era evolved into the raw pulse of early dancehall, also known as rub-a-dub. The 17 tracks featured here capture the stripped-down riddims, streetwise vocals, and echo-laden dub textures that defined this moment in time. These were the years when roots consciousness met sound system swagger, and the groove got heavier, slower, and more bass-focused. As political tensions rose in Jamaica and the optimism of the ‘70s roots began to fade, artists and producers responded with music that reflected reality—gritty, direct, and dance-ready. About This Era (1979–1985): The Roots–Dancehall Crossover Why It Happened After nearly a decade of deeply spiritual and political roots reggae, a younger generation pushed for change. They craved music that could still carry a message but move the dancefloor and reflect everyday life. The result: rub-a-dub and early dancehall, a style with emphasis on drum and bass, minimal overdubs, and toasting (a rhythmic, talk-over vocal style) alongside melodic singing. Who Shaped the Sound Sly & Robbie (The Rhythm Twins): Their Taxi label and riddims drove innovation—combining militant basslines with minimal, hard-hitting drum grooves. Henry “Junjo” Lawes: A towering figure of this time, producing massive hits for artists like Yellowman, Don Carlos, Michael Prophet, and more—often backed by the mighty Roots Radics band. Roots Radics: The go-to session band for rub-a-dub—slow tempos, dubbed-out textures, and basslines that could anchor any vocal. Joe Gibbs, Channel One, Jammy's, Techniques, and Volcano were the key studios and labels shaping the sound. PLAYLIST Tony Tuff – Come Fe Mash It Little John – Smoke Ganja Hard Gregory Isaacs – Oh What a Feeling Barrington Levy – Trying to Rule My Life Half Pint – Sally Michael Prophet – Gunman The Meditations – Carpenter Rebuild Linval Thompson – Look How Me Sexy Don Carlos – Laser Beam Super Cat – Dance Inna New York Yellowman – Nobody Move Nobody Get Hurt Freddie McGregor – Roots Man Skanking Josey Wales – It A Fi Burn Wailing Souls – Inchpinchers Anthony Johnson, Jah Thomas, Toyan – Gunshot Cornell Campbell – Boxing Around Bunny Wailer – I'm The Toughest

Lovers Rock is a romantic subgenre of reggae that emerged in mid-1970s London, blending soulful melodies with reggae rhythms. It was pioneered by producers like Dennis Harris, Dennis Bovell, and John Kpiaye, who established the Lovers Rock label in 1977. The genre provided a softer, more melodic alternative to the politically charged roots reggae of the time, resonating deeply with the Black British community. Dennis Bovell played a pivotal role in shaping the Lovers Rock sound, producing hits like Janet Kay's "Silly Games," which reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart in 1979. The genre's emphasis on love and emotional expression provided a platform for female artists, with figures such as Carroll Thompson and Louisa Mark gaining prominence. Lovers Rock became a staple at house parties and sound system events, fostering a sense of community and cultural identity. The impact of Lovers Rock extended beyond music, influencing fashion, dance, and social dynamics within the Black British community. It provided a space for emotional expression and connection during a time of racial tension and social upheaval. The genre's legacy continues to inspire artists and audiences, underscoring its significance in the tapestry of British musical and cultural history. Here's an interview with Dennis Bovell on PeckhamSoul.com (includes his Top 10 List of Lovers Rock, many of which appear here) PLAYLIST J.C. The Life, Sound, and Legacy of Duke Reid and Treasure Isle Records Before Duke Reid was a king of Jamaican music, he was a decorated cop. Before Treasure Isle was one of the greatest labels in reggae history, it was a small liquor store on Bond Street in Kingston. And before the world ever heard of U-Roy or Phyllis Dillon, Duke was already shaping the streets with a sound system so heavy it moved people physically and spiritually. He didn't just play records—he ruled dances with a crown on his head, a revolver on his hip, and a shotgun slung across his back. Video Version: https://youtu.be/NjiLMXCm2wA Jordan Peak is held in high regard by his peers across house and techno music. He first made his mark backwhen Pete Tong and DJMag tipped him as ‘one to watch'. He then went from strength-to-strength, in the studio and DJ booth becoming renowned for his finely crafted productions blending classic house and techno sounds with his own modern and distinctive twist. This hasculminated in Jordan gracing the decks of the world's best venues and parties including fabric, Mint Leeds,Rex Club, Studio 80, Pacha, Space and Electric Pickle. This saw Jordan gain staunch support from the house and techno elite Carl Cox, Disclosure, Gerd Janson, Groove Armada, Jamie Jones, John Digweed, Kerri Chandler, Marco Carola, Maya Jane Coles, Patrick Topping and Seth Troxler. With releases on some of the world's most esteemed imprints Bass Culture, One Records, Morris Audio. Robsoul and Saved Records. All the while gaining attention from premier dance publication Mixmag with not one but two tune of the month titles. Just as things really began to lift off Jordan he was hit with complications from the lung disease cystic fibrosis which thankfully settled but during this period of his life it had a knock on effect impacting his mental health and eventually forcing him to put the brakes on his burgeoning artist career...During his enforced sabbatical, Jordan rediscovered his passion for martial arts, alongside starting therapy tohelp with his mental health battles. After a few years off from music to address his physical and mental health, Jordan decided to start making music again and it was like a tap had been turned on and the creativeideas came flowing out again. With Jordan's passion reignited he sent some music across to Timmy P and Devstar's label Make You Move and in the summer of 2022 he released his smash ‘Less Drama, More Party EP' receiving support for severalmonths from BBC Radio 1 heavyweights Pete Tong, Danny Howard and Sarah Story. Now after a prolonged hiatus Jordan Peak is back with a renewed strength and determination to bring his inspiring crossover house and techno sound to the masses. This includes launching his own imprint Peak Trax, a creative outlet for Jordan to showcase his own brand of house and techno. In this episode we welcome Lloyd Bradley into our Hammersmith lair and ask him about his career as a journalist and as the acclaimed author of Bass Culture and Sounds Like London — the latter book celebrating its 10th birthday at the time of recording. We learn what London sounded like to Lloyd as a boy growing up in '60s Hornsey, and how his love for music led to writing for Blues & Soul and then NME and Q. He talks us through some of the key themes of Sounds Like London — his history of "100 years of Black music in the capital" — and particularly the homegrown reggae sub-genre known as "lover's rock" and the rise of grime as a hybrid of UK garage, hip hop, jungle and dancehall. Discussion of lover's rock leads us to clips from a 1998 audio interview with Steve Barrow, founder of dub/roots-reggae reissue label Blood and Fire — and then to how Lloyd came to write 2000's mighty Bass Culture: When Reggae was King. After a short discussion of soul legend Bettye LaVette — and her journey from early '60s Atlantic Records to the Anti- label in the mid-noughties — we pay tribute to the late Tina Turner and her epic story of survival and self-reinvention Mark quotes from highlights of his additions to the RBP library, including Richard Harrington's Washington Post review of the last gig Lowell George ever played and Tony Scherman's exhaustive Musician interview with session drummer Earl Palmer. Finally, Jasper talks us out with his remarks on pieces about Labrinth and London's hyper-eclectic jazz scene. Many thanks to special guest Lloyd Bradley. For more on Bass Culture and Sounds Like London, visit his website at lloydbradley.net. Pieces discussed: George Clinton, Beggar & Co, The Growth of Grime, Blood & Fire's Steve Barrow audio, Bettye Lavette, Bettye Lavette vs. Susan Boyle, Thankful N' Thoughtful, Ike & Tina, Tina Turner, Soulful Queen of Rock'n'roll, Tina Turner roars into Rock Hall, Lowell George, Earl Palmer, Labrinth live and London jazz.
DJ, remixer, songwriter, producer... Peewee Ferris has done it all. Australia's original superstar DJ shares his story of how his love for music led him into a career behind the decks and in the studio — and how being one step ahead when it came to dance music meant he was the go-to guy to bring new sounds and trends to the mainstream. From remixing acts like Jenny Morris, Boom Crash Opera and Kate Ceberano for major labels to being hired to launch Australia's answer to Yazz, Collette, Peewee's skills developed with each new project. In the '90s, he worked with two local dance acts, Bass Culture and Culture Shock, with mixed success before creating DJ Beats: Beyond The Turntable, the project that spawned top 20 single "I Feel It" alongside DJ Darren Briais. His profile continued to rise with prominent remixes for big-name pop acts like Savage Garden, Tina Arena and Human Nature. Peewee discusses those and his recent return to releasing pop/dance music with Toni Pearen.Bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/aussieTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @TurnAroundOnJoyInstagram: @chartbeatsau, @joyturnbeataroundEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com
