We're entering a busy half of the year for the label, and while we don't always use the isolatedmix series to help tee up what's in store, Alex Albrecht also happens to be a brilliant selector and curator of many great mixes over the years. Yes, you did read that right, Alex will soon be gracing ASIP with a new release, to be announced in full very shortly and available at the end of September. We had hoped to get this mix out a little earlier in the year but life got in the way for us both, and after a small trip to Japan recently, Alex was able to get some answers down to a few of my questions in anticipation for his awaited release here on ASIP. ~It's been interesting to see how you've created a very unique style and approach between your own project, with Sean as Albrecht La'Brooy and under the Melquíades guise. How would you describe the differences between them all?I originally created the Melquiades alias as a way to separate club/dancefloor music from more downtempo/ambient productions under my own name. The music I now produce under Alex Albrecht incorporates all sorts of sounds and influences and in my development, I don't now see a reason to differentiate. Campfire Stories by Alex Albrecht Campfire Stories was quite the debut album, and received such a great reception it seems. It combined lovely atmospheres and house elements, with downtempo and instrumental (even jazz). How are your albums born usually? My albums are usually created through my field recordings and recent experiences. I generally take recordings and loop/manipulate them to create a canvas and use that as the inspiration for each new track. When I see a larger album coming together I try to identify gaps in the concept and fill it with new productions. Your own label imprint, Analogue Attic was home to much of your early work and continues to host some of your music alongside others. How did the label aspect come about? The label was definitely created as a way to release our own music but very quickly became a medium to put out music from our friends and influences. The ambition has always been to showcase ambient music specifically made in Australia. We also hope to showcase music that does not generally conform to current trends in the global electronic scene. Healesville by Albrecht La'Brooy As mentioned already, your music is rich with field recordings and vivid instrumentation. What does your studio setup consist of usually? And what elements have remained a constant? My studio has been very consistent throughout the last 6 or 7 years. It has a Nord A1R, A Blofeld, a few Yamaha digital pianos, and some eventide effect pedals. Of course, there is also the Sony PCM A10 recorder which is really an incredible piece of tech. If your label (Analogue Attic) is any indication, the output and potential of producers in Australia seem very rich and fertile - is this true? How would you describe the "scene" for this type of music where you are? I'd have to agree – it is certainly a fertile scene in Aus with amazing music being produced around the country. There are many artists blending strong musical themes and elements with electronic elements and many gigs/shows aim to push boundaries and do something out of the ordinary. Your isolated mix captures your sound very well and includes a variety of styles and influences, what was your approach? I am often commuting to work by bike and love an interesting, hypnotic mix to push me along. I have been listening to ASIP mixes for years and was compelled to dive deep into my old libraries to capture some of the nostalgia that I feel with the earliest memories of ASIP. I brought a few of these into the picture with Dousk, John Beltran, BOC and Jesse Somfay (among others) and was also really happy with how well they've stood the test of time.Other than ahem, a pretty special record dropping here on ASIP soon, what can we expect from you for the remainder of 2023?It's unclear for now but I'm always making music and searching for inspiration. You get ‘End Of Sleep' by Baby Blue!Sophia Briggs is the mind behind an album that really peaked our interest earlier this year - a sort of mid-90's trance dream shot through the nightmare of the beginning of the start of the pandemic in 2020. After sharing some laughs over an Alanis Morisette comparison and having our interest peaked even further after discovering the album is constructed of no less than 500 samples, we new we had to invite Sophia on the show, which she kindly accepted!Over the course of this interview, we discuss Sofia's early years, getting into DJing, the Canadian music scene and her involvement in running the party s.M.i.L.e. We premiere Scottish electronic music royalty, Vince Watson. The now Netherlands based artist returns for his incredible 13th album, which is no mean feat for any musician. Vince has had a massive year with releases on Get Physical, Tronic, SushiTech, All Day I Dream, his own Everysoul Audio and a host of remixes. Vince ends 2021 by presenting his label's biggest and most adventurous release to date, ‘DnA [re]Sequenced'. This is also accompanied by the [re]Sequenced Sampler which features 3 brand new mixes from the DnA album by Vince himself. The album also features some of electronic music titans including Carl Craig, Claude Young, Jon Dixon, Steve Rachmad, John Beltran, Shawn Rudiman, Stephen Lopkina and Stephen Brown. After the massive response to Watson's ‘DnA' album in 2019, Vince had wanted to carve a different spin on the LP by having some of the tracks remixed by his favourite Detroit ‘flavoured' artists from the three places that have influenced his music: Scotland, Amsterdam, Detroit. We premiere his track ‘First Wave [808 Mix]'. The track is reminiscent of some classic Galaxy 2 Galaxy records from Underground Resistance. A punchy but still funky 808 drum workout locks in the groove while angelic style synth work transcends you to space. Warm and fluffy pads simmer through the track while a powerful baseline runs through your body, the heavenly lead bounces around the track with an entrancing melody. The track is powerful, euphoric and tranquil all at the one time. This is proper electronic music. John Beltran, born 4 March 1969 in Lansing, Michigan, is one of those producers that always seems to elude being pinned to any one category. His early work on Carl Craig's seminal Retroactive imprint sculpted a Detroit classic with hints of Derrick May, world music, and Jazz vibrations. He followed up in 1996 on Peacefrog with arguably one of the most sought after techno classics "Ten Days of Blue," which is still John's most successfully licensed music with songs like "Collage of Dreams" being used in the Miramax film Human Traffic and the HBO hit Six Feet Under. His next project was entitled "The Cry" under the Placid Angles guise which MixMaster Morris charted as one of his favourite albums ever. This time Leah Floyeurs will be the fourth female artist on the show. I chatted with Leah Floyeurs over the weekend about what makes her tick. The London based musician which was raised and born in Australia was actually trying to start a career as a journalist In 1993 she moved from Australia to the UK and worked in a recordstore and as a pianist. But somehow in 1993 a party has changed the course of her plan and she never moved back to her hometown Brisbane / Australis. In 1996 / 97 she started playing records in London and after a short period of time , also in several countries far outside the UK. In 2011 she finally quit her full-time job and put her focus on the music.She’s been inspired by artists like Marc Forshaw, John Heckle ,Heiroglyphic Being,Shackleton,Eduardo de la Calle, Fred P, Franklin de Costa and Grimes In the same year she launched her own radioshow called “Leah with sound” at Timeline Music for the past 5 years. Leah is a very open minded artist with a wide range of genre. She is a resident on the well known Freerotation festival at Hay-on-Wyein in the UK. And also a resident at the club 50 arc in London. In cooperation with DJ Alison Marks, she had already released under the name “Wallflower! on the Italian label Rebirth Records and has already been remixed by Larry Heard. Favela Funk! pays homage to Brazilian Funk Carioca music from Rio De Janerio. It's roots are derived from Miami Bass. "Baile funk", in Rio, refers not to the music, but to the actual parties in which the music is played. Favela Funk! takes place on February 6th, 2010 from 8pm-2am at Lab 24/7 located at 247 Stuyvesant Avenue between Putnam & Madison Avenues. Ну вот наступил 2007 год, который меня очень изменил. Этот микс я писал почти 2 месяца, весь 2007 год. Год который уже принес не мало переживаний, с которыми мне помогала справиться - музыка. По-этому в миксе собрана именно та музыка, которая играла у меня с 22 до 7 утра и с 9 до 18 вечера на протяжении 2-х месяце, мой спаситель и мой кислород... Если описать подробно, то микс это некий симбиоз различных стилей, начиная от ambient, lounge, IDM и современная классика. Если озвучить исполнителей то это такие композиторы как Ryuichi Sakamoto, Craig Armstrong, John Beltran, Hans Zimmer, а также электронные колективы как Plaid, Jonson, Kuba, Nor Elle, Telefon Tel Aviv, а также Lounge коллективы как Baul Dimension, Gotan Project, Chambre Individuelle. Микс посвящается всем тем кто не любит праздник Святого Валентина, тем кто щас одинок или просто себя чувствует одиноким, тем у кого плохие воспоминания с этим праздником.
