POPULARITY
Of the original crop of Detroit DJs, @delano_smith is one of the few still dedicated to the craft. At a time described as the Wild West by some, when party culture was taking its first tentative steps, Delano honed his skills under the guidance of the late, great Ken Collier. With initial sets fusing soul, disco and early electronic sounds, Delano planted seeds in the minds of Detroit's subsequent generations. Those dancing to his sets in the late 70s and early 80s would later become ambassadors of a scene with worldwide appeal. Now, Delano stands shoulder to shoulder with the figureheads he once educated, writing a brand new chapter for house and techno. Following a period out of the game, Delano returned with a new focus, forming the DJ collective BeatDownSounds with long-time peers Norm Talley and @mikeagentx. The trio offered a unique, slowed down and raw take on house, a sound picked up by London/Tokyo label, @third-ear-recordings, and presented on the double-length compilation ‘Detroit BeatDown Vol.1', the success of which enabled Delano and his partners to represent the Motor City on an international level. In 2002 his own Mixmode imprint. In 2009 Delano formed a pivotal relationship with the Berlin-based @sushitech, following a chance meeting with label head @yossi Amoyal, the setting Panorama Bar, a club that would later help define Delano's musical direction. After a string of successful Sushitech EPs, Delano dropped ‘Odyssey' onto the scene's collective consciousness, an album spawning enduring dancefloor favourites. Two years later his sophomore long player arrived, loaded with dark and dubby material ‘Twilight' was a curve ball to follow the hysteria that greeted his debut. 2017 saw Delano add yet another Sushitech LP to his discography, entitled ‘Detroit Lost Tapes' it offered archived material, dug out and recontextualised with a worldwide tour following in support. Detroit dance music thrives on intergenerational connections. In the late '70s and early '80s, the late Ken Collier mixed disco, soul and early electronic dance music in eye-opening DJ sets that left a mark on up-and-coming artists like Delano Smith. Once Smith established himself in the city's explosive techno community, he, in turn, influenced soon-to-be legends like Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, Jeff Mills, Norm Talley, Mike "Agent X" Clarke and others. Now an elder statesman, Smith is etched into our history books as a crucial contributor to Detroit dance music, both house and techno. He's known especially for the Detroit beatdown sound he pioneered alongside Talley and Clark—slower, sexier records than what Detroit techno is generally associated for. (The trio even put out an RA Podcast under the name in 2010.) It's more recently that Smith has become known as a producer. He started his own label, Mixmode Recordings, and became a regular on Berlin imprint Sushitech, where he released many of his albums, including the jazzy deep house masterclass An Odyssey. His style has evolved over the years to incorporate ambient, dub and more contemporary techno influences. More recently, Smith's career has been sidelined by an ongoing battle with a rare and untreatable form of cancer. He's hosted livestreams throughout his ordeal to keep in touch with his fans. His RA Podcast, which he calls his "Legacy Mix," is a celebration of his favourite sounds: euphoric chords, jacking drums and deep-space melodies, the elements that have and will continue to reverberate through Detroit and beyond. It also marks the beginning of a more hopeful period for Smith, as he gets ready to travel again, especially with his Legacy Detroit series, which celebrates the lineage he's an indelible part of, and always will be. @delano_smith Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/914
Our next premiere of the day features Irish DJ and producer BALMR with his track “Paths Unknown” featuring on Sofa Movements Records. The track is as introspectively deep-house as one can imagine. Drawing clear experience from Detroit which makes for top-tier listening. Get dug into this! Raised on the seemingly ingrained House sound of Cork and its heavy influence by renowned and revered House heads Fish Go Deep and their Sweat Nights at the legendary Sir Henry's Club it was an inevitable progression for BALMR to follow the path of producer and DJ. In his own words: ‘It was difficult to escape the sound of House Music growing up in Cork'. Over the past decade, BALMR's released material on Nordic Trax, Kolour Detroit, Expanded Records and more, while hosting his own Down Right Deep Show on Deep House Radio. Here, presenting his new latest collection of works, ‘Paths Unknown' sees BALMR captures moments in time and individual journeys to paths previously undiscovered. BALMR always had a personal love for the Detroit sound, particularly artists like Norm Talley, Mike Huckaby, Delano Smith, Moodymann and so on, which naturally lead him to his production journey. He has had numerous releases and remixes in his catalogue as well as working on mixing for other artists on labels like Yore. He is also one of half of the duo ‘Southbounds Sounds', having recently featured as a guest on Lars Behrenroths DSOH show. As well as this stunning release, BALMR has several other upcoming projects this year, including 2 vinyl-only releases with one on ‘Selections Label' out of Toronto featuring a remix from Glenn Davis, and another on Deeper Groove with his fellow collaboration partner Deep Excavations, featuring a remix from John Daly. Honing in on his latest bit of production material, ‘Paths Unknown' opens the flip side, as the composition dives deep and back into immersive and airy realms through subtly nuanced textures, resonant synth licks and snaking bass grooves. Dreamy atmospheres can be heard throughout this composition which is utterly filled with warmth and depth throughout. @xdb is Kosta Athanassiadis – German by birth and in residence, with Greek parentage. His roots are in the central German town of Göttingen. It was here that he began DJing in the early nineties; where he worked in a record shop; where he ran a radio show for five years; and the base from which he established the Metrolux record label in 2006. For many people, it was at this point that XDB appeared on their radar. His debut ‘Jackintosh EP' and the following ‘Descap EP' made a splash with heads, but whilst the shimmering dub techno moments were perhaps the most obvious hook, subsequent tracks defied easy categorisation – an early indication that the person behind the music took a broad view of electronic music, caring not for stylistic pigeonholes. Further releases mapped out more of a defined aesthetic for the label, with XDB's own work sitting alongside contributions from Atheus and Arne Weinberg. By 2007, Kosta's music had caught the ear of other outlets; including Francois Kevorkian's Deep Space Media (a sublabel of Wave Music) licensed ‘Descap' and ‘Descap live' for re-release. @brendonmoeller was the A&R at that time and a 4 track EP on Wave Music followed in 2009. The same year, @p-scott put out the first XDB release on his own @sistrum-recordings, which saw Kosta tailoring his output to a cleaner, more Detroit-inflected sound. In tandem with his production work, XDB the DJ was coming into his own. An avid collector of vinyl since his childhood (Kosta's collection presently numbers some 10,000 records); he had honed his craft in clubs and on the radio – mixing monthly on his own ‘Case Check' show. 2008 brought an early highlight – spinning at Japan's lauded Labyrinth festival alongside the cream of the international deep techno and house scene. Kosta's DJ sets draw upon his expansive record collection, playing right across the board of electronic music. He has no shortage of technical skill but it's his selection that truly shines – putting the music itself at the forefront, letting songs breathe when need be, and delivering plenty of head-scratching ‘what the hell is this track?' moments. It's on this that Kosta has built his reputation. Tastemakers such as the now-defunct mnml ssgs crew were quick to snap him up for a guest mix in 2009, and several of his online recordings have been picked up for @resident-advisor ‘Mix of the Day' spot. In 2010, XDB played at the UK's highly-regarded Freerotation festival – starting a love affair with the event that's seen him come back every year since. The festival secured Kosta's place within a fraternity of fellow musicians and DJs who also prefer to let their music do the talking – likeminds who recognise the purity in what they do, and are all the more respected because of it. That same year, he remixed Detroit heroes Norm Talley - @ormalley and Aaron Carl - @aaroncarl and in 2011 produced releases for the Dolly, Harbour City Sorrow and Echocord imprints. 2012's highlight was a split 12” with Kassem Mosse and in 2013 he was reunited with Sistrum Recordings for the ‘Frocks' record. 2013 also saw the rebirth of Metrolux after a 3 year hiatus, with ‘Edition 2', an excellent Various Artists release. When it comes to producing, Kosta favours a slow and steady work rate, opting to focus on quality control rather than record shop ubiquity. His DJing keeps him in the public eye, but one gets the sense that XDB prefers to operate in the shadows. There's a refreshing lack of gimmickry to his approach – keeping it low-key allows him to be judged solely on the basis of talent. Arguably, it's an innate quality – the way he wants to play it; the way that brings him most satisfaction, but it's helped establish his reputation as an artist of considerable merit, winning the approval his audience and peers, alike. Stay Rave with #R13!

Norm Talley, AM, Scan7, Terrence Parker DEMF 20 Year Anniversary
Follow the artist: @grabacionestercermundo Artists with history or significant roots in their own community's musical history are the ones we are most passionate about. A few months have passed since our last posting, but we believe that this time will be rewarded by telling you about the DJ and musician of today's episode. Dee Jason, also known as Jason Carich, is a dj and pioneer of the electronic scene in Buenos Aires, with over 30 years of experience behind him. He has the esteem of artists like Norm Talley, Jorge Savoretti or Josh Milan, just to mention a few, and today Jason stands out with the sound we love the most, a style that is the outcome of tireless research in the maze of Chicago House and Detroit Techno, combined with flawless dynamic and surgical technique. All this ability is the result of a story that astonishes us. His past has seen him a member of the Urban Groove collective, a group that in the dawn of the '90s in Buenos Aires proposed cutting-edge music and techno shows that were not limited to single performances, but with consoles set up with SEVEN turntables, played simultaneously by all members and rearranged by Diego Cid on the main mixer. Long story short, a scenario like this recalls the similar ones gathered in Europe by the well-known personalities who had a sparkling career in electronic music worldwide. Dee Jason is a dj to follow that persuades us even more in considering the Latin American electronic scene as a panorama full of gems to be discovered. Almost forgot... Enjoy! Hello Everyone Its November 22, 2017, Thanks for being here and I hope that you will continue to return as we delight all you music lovers with another cool Decisive Podcast. My Special Guest XDB is a guy who I find to be a nice, funny, talented dj and independent artist more on, for many years he continues to be relevant to his fans. This vinyl junkie to this day still lugs to every gig a bag or two of records rather than the growing popularity of the usb stick. Germany's XDB has been DJing since the early 90s, and his creative growth enhances this decisions of what labels and musicians he chooses to collaborate with. After years of working in a record shop, he launched his Metrolux Music label in 2006. He sees his music heading in a direction that ranges from deep and soulful house to raw, analogue sounding dub techno. XDB is garnering the overdue attention of popular writers and fellow musicians with releases and remixes for Aaron Carl (rip), Norm Talley and Patrice Scott on quality labels like Francois K's Wave Music, Echochord, AIM, Dolly and Patrice Scott´s Sistrum to name a few. Infos: Facebook - www.facebook.com/xdbmetrolux Facebook - www.facebook.com/kosta.athanassiadis Discogs - www.discogs.com/search/?q=xdb+&type=all After numerous invitation requests, its my pleasure to welcome Germany`s very own XDB to the Decisive Podcast Series Family. Enjoy, and thanks for patronage, Roberto Ingram

Chubby! on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chubbyrecords Norm Talley on Facebook: www.facebook.com/norm.talleyii Born and raised on Detroit's westside in the late 60's Norm's addiction to music began at an early age.By the age of 13 years old Norm's diverse musical outlook consisted of Disco, Progressive, Jazz. Starting off Norm collected good music (45's-8-tracks-Vinyl) with proceeds earned from his paper route and eventually was introduced to Ken Collier who just happened to live 3 blocks over. Most of the Disco and Progressive Talley was introduced to during this time was through Ken. With one turntable, an eight-track player, a receiver and some speakers, Talley would listen to music with friends. One of these friends eventually needed a DJ for a backyard party, which Talley played with his one turntable without mixing. After earning money to buy a full set-up, he soon had many requests for gigs, and has launched an internationally successful career as a DJ, producer, and all around musician.

Apparel Music Radio show is happy to present a exclusive evergreen mix by Delano Smith. Delano's attention to programming sets that are kinetic, emotional and educational are met with a delivery of the highest class. Having been one of the original young guns personally mentored by Motown’s 1st DJ, Ken Collier, he displays skills entirely unique to this group. Having cut his teeth in a time when an aspiring DJ had to live off his wits to make the cut, his dynamic skill set has made him the real Detroit head's secret favorite. Smith's extended hiatus later in his DJ years was ended spectacularly when the Detroit Beatdown project again highlighted his talent. Teamed with Mike ‘Agent X' Clark and Norm Talley, the crew began to spread the word of Detroit to fresh audiences, in demand globally and touching down at renowned clubs such as London's Fabric en route. On the production front, Delano stands head and shoulders above the rest in crafting alluring, forward thinking and highly danceable grooves. His productions on Third Ear, Sushitech and Still Music have taken up crate spaces with jocks looking to add the perfect blend of soul and energy to their sets. With his own imprint Mixmode debuting in 2003, it continues to release selectively soulful dance floor gems. Both behind the decks and in the studio, Delano's genre boundary defying vision of working a floor is a direct link to the beginnings of the DJ in Detroit, maintaining his integrity today, his hunger shows little sign of abating. Quotes: "Delano - Watching you play brings back so many memories!. I used to go listen to you long before I ever wanted to become a DJ. At the YWCA, Downstairs Pub with Ken. I'm following you. Keep it comin'!." - Jeff Mills "Without Delano there would be no Derrick". - Derrick May "Delano is the first and last of Detroit." - Chez Damier link: https://soundcloud.com/mixmodedetroit https://soundcloud.com/apparelmusic
