"Soundscapes reveal a lot about how people think and behave." The field recordist and musician talks about listening culture, repatriating African sounds and his new album with The Bug. Today's conversation moves away from the dance floor, focusing instead on the soft, ambient soundscapes of the Berlin-based musician Joseph Kamaru—AKA KMRU—whose work has been featured at festivals like CTM, Mutek, Atonal, Horst Music and Arts, Dekmantel, and Unsound; concert halls like The Barbican; and major galleries and site-specific installations around the world. Kamaru moved to Europe from Nairobi, where he first became interested in music production, and field recordings specifically. As a graduate student in the sonic arts, he learned that the majority of the discourse around sound art practices is specific to Western Eurocentric or occidental ways of thinking. He's since embarked on a mission to use field recording as a means of repatriating African identities that are often left out of institutional archives and grapple with the legacy of colonialism. In this RA Exchange, Kamaru reflects on the sociopolitical angle of his work, and his observation that listening, by its very nature, is never neutral. He also talks about how civilisation and technology has changed our collective listening habits; how sound sources beyond the human hearing range make their way into his work with the use of electromagnetic microphones; and his new album, Disconnect, made with the musician Kevin Richard Martin (AKA The Bug). No 26. februāra līdz 3. martam norisināsies otrais Valmieras Starptautiskais multimediju festivāls, kura programmā šogad iekļauti mākslinieki no Latvijas, Igaunijas, Lietuvas, Kanādas un Norvēģijas.

Eliane Ellbogen is an intellectual property lawyer at Fasken law firm in Montreal, and has spoken at a number of conferences about the legal implications that accompany AI Music. She joined Music Ally's Editor Joe Sparrow, who lobbed some (depending on your point of view) tricky and/or stupid legal questions at Eliane – who answered them with patience and clarity. For instance: can an AI author music? Can humans claim ownership of AI-generated music? What happens if an AI-created piece of music sounds very similar to your own human music? What laws might be used to regulate it all? Eliane gamely got to grips with them all. "I always want to challenge myself as a musician." The DJ, producer and T4T LUV NRG cofounder talks about her new live set and overcoming hearing loss live from MUTEK. Eris Drew is something of a mentor to many, including people she's never met. Her words on psychedelics, the ritual of dancing and other topics have become near-gospel for many fans, and it's always a treat to hear her speak on practically any topic. While many of her discussions veer towards the esoteric or spiritual, when it came time for our live RA Exchange at MUTEK, she wanted to get down to brass tacks about making and playing music. Ahead of the first North American performance of her stunning live show, Drew sat down with RA's music editor, Andrew Ryce. She spoke at length about her live show and DJing—including her old-school style of mixing she calls "riding the pitch"—and the trials and tribulations of proofing stages and booths for turntable use, hearing protection and more. She spoke with all the authority and feeling she usually does, with a deep, technical knowledge that makes this talk almost as much a tutorial as it was a conversation. Robot Koch on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 8/31/22 About Robot Koch -   Robot Koch is an award winning artist/producer/composer from Berlin, living in Los Angeles. He has been steadily crafting a remarkably mature and original sound that expertly combines a deep and cinematic atmosphere, emotional reflection and forward thinking production. His visual music lends itself to picture and has been used on numerous TV Shows, Movie Trailers, Feature Films and Ad campaigns over the last few years. Robot Koch has been presenting his music live over the last decade, attracting a growing audience worldwide and appearing on the lineups of major festivals like Coachella, Sonar, Mutek and playing Boiler Room several times. Apart from pursuing his artist career, Robert Koch can be found working as a producer and writer for both indie and major artists worldwide, gaining gold and platinum records for his productions. For his album Sphere Koch expanded his musical horizon even more and created an immersive Full Dome Live Show with 3D surround sound and 360 visuals, which he developed in cooperation with visual artist Mickael Le Goff. Sphere sold out in Planetariums and Festivals worldwide, winning several awards for "Best Immersive Experience". Robert Koch, who also won the German Music Composers Award 2014 in the category 'Best Composer Electronic Music' runs his own label, Trees and Cyborgs, which he founded in 2016. Robot Koch's music is an intriguing dialogue between technology and nature that seems particularly relevant to the times we live in. It's a constantly evolving exploration of that what lies beyond. “It's like traveling through space, with all the beautiful and scary moments such a journey involves,” says Koch. It is this confluence of beauty and fear that likewise grants his music a shamanic motif, as the BBC's Bobby Friction noted on Koch's music; "It sounds like artificial intelligence discovering religion." Robot Koch has become well known for his cinematic compositions, which transcend music into real living experiences. For his album Sphere he took the exploration of space to new grounds that reached far beyond sound. Conceived as the soundtrack to an audiovisual live show with surround sound and 360 visuals, the project was not only a musical exploration of space, but also an observable voyage through outer and inner space. Made especially to be exhibited in planetariums and full-dome venues, Sphere sold out in venues from Berlin to San Francisco, Chicago to Moscow. The project which he created in collaboration with visual artist Mickael Le Goff has recently been shown at Sonar Barcelona and Mutek Montreal, and won “best immersive experience” at Macon Film Festival as well as "Best Dome Visuals" at the DTLA Film Festival. Koch and Le Goff continue to work on new immersive experiences, installations and films.       About The DJ Sessions - “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience. Amon Tobin on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 12/14/21 About Amon Tobin - Amȯn Tȯbin was born in Brazil, but spent his formative years in the UK. He came up through the breakdancing and hip-hop scenes in the 1980s, and the jungle and drum and bass scenes of the 1990s, before establishing a sound and a style that was singularly his own. He first emerged with a string of 12" singles on the small London label 9Bar Records, and his breakthrough first album, Adventures in Foam, led to his signing to Ninja Tune in 1996. For the next several years, he pushed the boundaries of found sound to the limits in acclaimed albums such as Bricolage (1997), Permutation (1998), Supermodified (2000), and out from out Where (2002), and pushed other compositional tactics forward in albums like Foley Room (2007) and ISAM (2011). Foley Room explored the role of sound design and field recordings, culminating in an acclaimed performance at the birthplace of musique concrete, the GRM in Paris. He also produced several original scores, ranging from the cult film Taxidermia to the video game blockbuster Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, and created numerous dancefloor-oriented singles and albums under the alias Two Fingers. Tobin's 2011 album ISAM, an acronym for "Invented Sound Applied to Music," utilized advanced synthesis processing and production techniques traditionally reserved for sound design in film. It proved an influential contribution towards recent approaches to music production in electronic music. It also paved the way for a radically new kind of audiovisual performance. Hailed by major media outlets including Wired, Rolling Stone, NPR, and many others around the world, ISAM received global acclaim as a landmark in audiovisual performance. Projection mapping, which had been the domain of static and mostly corporate visual showcases, was configured for the first time to uniquely narrate the musical performance of an album. ISAM reshaped audience's expectations of electronic music concerts, and premiered at some of the world's most prestigious venues, from the Sydney opera House to the olympia in Paris to the London Hammersmith, and many international festivals including Sonar, MUTEK and Moogfest. The depth and scope of Amon Tobin's work have been a major inspiration to many. From the Kronos Quartet to Diplo, he achieved respect among artists within and outside electronic music. He established a reputation for musical ingenuity unconfined by genre, and over two decades remains one of the most visionary electronic artists of his generation. — Geeta Dayal About The DJ Sessions - With over 2,200 episodes produced over the last eleven years “The DJ Sessions”, a Twitch and Mixcloud “Featured Partner”, has featured international artists such as: BT, Robert Babicz, Camo & Krooked, Amon Tobin, SNBRN, Simon Patterson, Lindsey Stirling, Mako, Morgan Page, Jes, Cut Chemist, Yves Larock, Judge Jules, DubFX, DJs From Mars, Rudosa, Thievery Corporation, Sander Van Dorn, GAWP, Hollaphonic, Kissy Sell Out, Somna, David Morales, Roxanne, JB & Scooba, Massimo Vivona, Moulinx, Futuristic Polar Bears, Many Few, Joe Stone, Reboot, Truncate, Scotty Boy, Jody Wisternoff, Benny Bennasi, Dance Loud, Christopher Lawrence, Oliver Twizt, Ricardo Torres, Alex Harrington, 4 Strings, Sunshine Jones, Elite Force, Revolvr, Kenneth Thomas, Paul Oakenfold, George Acosta, Reid Speed, TyDi, Donald Glaude, Jimbo, Ricardo Torres, Hotel Garuda, Bryn Liedl, Rodg, Kems, Mr. Sam, Steve Aoki, Funtcase, Dirtyloud, Marco Bailey, Thousand Fingers, Dirtmonkey, Crystal Method, Beltek, Dyro, Andy Caldwell, Darin Epsilon, Kyau & Albert, Kutski, Vaski, Moguai, Blackliquid, Sunny Lax, Matt Darey, and many more. Berlin-bred, LA-based German Music Composers Award winner Robert Koch's music has been described as ''..artificial intelligence discovering religion.'' (Bobby Friction -BBC).   A signature deep, cinematic sound that entices crowds to dance at festivals and events like Coachella, Sonar, Mutek, and Boiler Room as effortlessly as it acts as a backdrop for multiple Television, Film, and Ad campaigns even as we speak, his music meets at the intriguing intersection of technology and nature in a manner increasingly relevant to the current zeitgeist.    Koch's collaborative and projects have sold out in planetariums hosting immersive art experiences even while gaining gold and platinum status as a producer for indie artists. A testimony to the seamless, unconventional, complex, and deep thinker who refers to his craft as a 'spiritual practice'. Even while his ever-growing relationship with Meditation and Yoga ground him to make more space for the same.   I catch up with my friend and ex-collaborator for the first time in 7 years after our workshop/festival tour in India in 2013.   This episode is brought to you by:  www.holisticpianoacademy.com  Music by: www.everynowheremusic.com Recorded on a Zoom L8 mixer kindly sponsored by: https://www.sound-service.eu        Connect with Robert: https://www.instagram.com/robotkoch

An Argentinian who's musical forte has been bred in Berlin, Alejandro Mosso has been at the forefront of developing innovative percussive, organic and delicate electronic music for more than 15 years. As a worldwide touring artist, he has performed his captivating live sets across South America, North America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The Berliner is also a dedicated and prolific producer, releasing forward thinking projects that span the genre spectrum since 2003. With his particular brand of uniquely musical club music, Alejandro challenges the understanding of what dance music could be. Throughout the years, he has developed a distinctive sound palette – a perfect balance between electronic and acoustic sounds, sitting at the intersection of deep house, minimal techno, tribal, and melodic dance music. Constantly defying the lethargic ‘dj tool' concept, Mosso strives to produce immersive musical experiences, unapologetically pouring emotions, melodies, and harmonies into the traditionally rhythm-dominated genre. Throughout the years, world renowned labels like Cocoon, Third Ear, !K7, Hivern Discs, Sushitech, Sol Selectas and more have welcomed the Mosso sound to their catalogues. In 2017, he released his album “Isolation Diaries”, a first class listen that presented remixes from two of the most interesting and influential electronic music producers of the last decades: Burnt Friedmann and Ricardo Villalobos. The Argentinian also runs his own label “mosso”, focused on releasing untarnished material with a sense of character and individualism present in each release. Mosso's live show is the quintessential presentation of his artistic career. Over the years, he has perfected the art of moving dancefloors with nightly innovation and a full command of intricate rhythms. Swaying between percussive tribal beats, 4×4 house grooves, and melodic emotional layers, Alejandro Mosso has performed at clubs such as Watergate, Rex Club, Fabric, Womb, Tresor, Amnesia, and Kater Blau. He has also headlined festivals such as the Spanish and Argentinian editions of the esteemed Mutek. 2020 finds Alejandro with a busy release schedule, contributing with original material and high profiles remixes to the catalogs of labels like Do Not Sit, Akbal Music, Sirin and When We Dip's XYZ. As a masters student of Sound Studies and Sonic Arts, Alejandro continues to expand his artistic practice into the worlds of sound installation art and 3D audio. Bside Incoming: The Mole This week's episode of Bside Incoming has been placed in the reliable hands of Canadian DJ and Producer, avid collector of records, label boss of Maybe Tomorrow, and man of musical passion: Colin de la Plante AKA The Mole. Often to be found digging blindly into uncharted subterranean regions on the impassioned pursuit of novel sounds, The Mole endeavours to return to the surface with buried treasures for the keen and willing ears of his audience. Beyond his reputation as a top class live act with an infectious enthusiasm behind the decks, there is much to be said for his prowess as a producer, notably his involvement with Units & Measurements, The Modern Deep Left Quartet, and most recently with his Deadbeat Meets the Mole release on BLKRTZ. Go check out his discogs/bandcamp pages for more: https://themole.bandcamp.com/ https://www.discogs.com/artist/111868-The-Mole With a career spanning 20 years: originating in Vancouver and currently based in Berlin; releases on such prestigious labels as Ostgut Ton, Perlon, Musique Risquée and Internasjonal; worldwide festival appearances at Mutek, Houghton, Sandbox and Outline; and an ever longer list of collaborative musical projects… we are certainly very excited for Colin to guide us through some of his most cherished Bsides. Starting out with a focus on slow burning percussion, and left field jazz, before picking up the pace with some smooth electronica, feel good funky beats and some powerful disco. A healthy dose of legendary artists: Patrick Adams, Billy Preston, Marvin Gaye and Hamilton Bohannon; lightly sprinkled with soulful global sounds throughout and an excellent history lesson for each record. Ever tasteful in his selection, and always keeping us on our toes… The Mole keeps on giving! Enjoy!

Live from MUTEK with Montreal's master of chill. Interview with @duste1: melbournedeepcast.net/portfolio/dust-e-1 About the mix.. "Ya! It was a blast to play at MUTEK this summer! I did so on Friday around 6 pm at the outdoor stage, sun was streaking out over the plaza (see picture) and people were filtering over from work, lying down on the floor and vibing, getting their evening going. The mood of my set catered well I think, very happy with how it all turned out! My setup was using one of my three laptops, midi controller and a recently acquired synthesizer. After thinking and working on the set for many months, it all came together the week before - finished up some old ideas and jammed out a bunch of new ones. That's how things tend to go for me, many months of thinking and not really doing much, then a week or so of frenzied activity, getting stuff done. One or two things will be out at some stage but the large majority probably won't? I'm not sure really… we'll see."
